Exodus 3: 1-15 Edgar Palacios Apacentando Moisés las ovejas de su suegro Jetro, sacerdote de Madián, llevó las ovejas a través del desierto y llegó hasta Horeb, monte de Dios. Allí se le apareció el ángel de Jehová en una llama de fuego, en medio de una zarza. Al fijarse, vio que la zarza ardía en fuego, pero la zarza no se consumía. Encontes Moisés se dijo: “Iré ahora para contemplar esta gran visión, por qué causa la zarza no se quema”. Cuando Jehová vio que él iba a mirar, lo llamó de en medio de la zarza: -¡Moisés, Moisés! –Aquí estoy –respondió él. Dios le dijo: -No te acerques, quita el calzado de tus pies, porque el lugar en que tú estás, tierra santa es. Y añadió: -Yo soy el Dios de tu padre, el Dios de Abraham, el Dios de Isaac y el Dios de Jacob. Entonces Moisés cubrió su rostro, porque tuvo miedo de mirar a Dios. As our community experiences a time of change, we’ve been looking at stories of the fathers and mothers of the Hebrew people and their journey through change to the fulfillment of God’s promises to them. How can we build and strengthen our community through change? We’ll find out together. Thanks for your help. SERVICE OF MOURNING This ecumenical service will be held Wednesday, September 3, 6:00 p.m. in the Calvary Sanctuary. Weeks of overwhelming destruction have resulted in suffering, the loss of life, devastated land, homes, and infrastructure. The siege of Gaza and the military occupation of Palestinian territory cripple normal life. As the people of the region cry, “How long, O Lord?”, we join our prayers with theirs in a service of worship. In the midst of sorrow and grief, please join us in a witness to faith, hope and love. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 6: MARKING 150 YEARS ON THIS CORNER. According to Chronicles of Calvary Baptist Church in the City of Washington (Wilbur, 1914): “A lot was selected at the southeast corner of H and Eighth Streets, and September 6, 1864, the corner-stone of the first meeting-house of Calvary Church was laid.” (Two years later, that original building was destroyed by fire, on December 15, 1867). Congratulations, Calvary, on another 150th milestone!

CALVARY CONVERSATIONS Join us the second Sunday of each month in the Chapel following worship and coffee hour as we talk about the transitions and changes occurring at Calvary and share our thoughts, suggestions and questions. UPDATES FROM THE CHURCH BOARD. At their monthly meeting, Thursday, August 14, the Personnel Chair presented candidates for the Intentional Interim, for the Board's consideration.  The board will conduct Skype interviews with candidates during the first week of September.  At the regularly scheduled meeting, September 11, the Board will discuss candidates and select one to bring to Washington for an in-person discussion with the Board during the week of September 22 (depending on schedules).  The Board hopes to present the selected candidate to the congregation at a called meeting for a vote on September 28 (if possible, based on timing of other steps in process) or on October 19.
