Now, be with us today and give us glad hearts that this time of worship be a joyful response of praise and thanksgiving for all of your mercy and love. Then send us out into the world as your faithful children, full of love for you and for others. G IVING AND S ERVING OFFERING OUR LENTEN CONFESSION

Gracious God, you came to us in your Child, Jesus. He shared our life and in every way loved us, even as we nailed him to the cross and watched him die. But then, because of your love for him and for us, you raised him from death to reign forever in mercy and in love.

But, while we know the story and believe it, too often it has made little difference in our lives. There have been times when we should have stood up for Jesus, when we should have told clearly and confidently what he means to us and to this world. But, instead, we were timid and silent. For those times have mercy on us.

Enable us to reflect more deeply on the sacred story and the one to whom it testifies, so that our love for him may increase, our hope in him be more sure, our service for him be more joyful, and our testimony of him more courageous.

Let us state together the truth God’s people have come to trust. Today’s witness is about the cross, adapted from the old German Heidelberg Confession.

We believe that in Christ’s death our old selves have been crucified, put to death and buried with him, so that sin and fear no longer have final victory over us, but that instead we might live lives of joy, gratitude and praise.

We believe that because of what Christ did for us all on the cross, God will never hold against us either our weaknesses or our sins. Though we will struggle with sin our whole lives long, by grace God grants us all peace and life, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Thanks be to God. Amen.
