THE WORSHIP OF GOD August 4, 2013

Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost

11:00 a.m.

We are an ecumenical, multi-racial, multi-ethnic Christian body that reaches out to the world with the Good News of Jesus Christ. WELCOME GATHERING SONG

Susan Sevier GATHER US IN

Here we receive new life in the waters; here we receive the bread of new birth; here you shall call your sons and your daughters, call us anew to be salt for the earth. Give us to drink the wine of compassion, give us to eat the bread that is you; nourish us well, and teach us to fashion lives that are holy and hearts that are true.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Amy Butler

We believe in the gospel of Jesus Christ, who came to free the captives, heal the sick, and proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God. We believe in the story of God’s love, which is told to us by our ever creating God. We believe in a continually caring Christ, whose example encourages us to risk ourselves for the sake of the gospel. We believe in a continually healing Holy Spirit, whose power enables us to share the story of God’s love. We believe in a continually caring community called the Church, which physically lives out the story of God’s love. We believe in participating in the great calling we have—to live out the gospel in the world. Let us worship God! Congregation standing. La congregación se pone de pie. Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. SHARING THE MEAL COMMUNION MEDITATION

TÚ HAS VENIDO A LA ORILLA / LORD, YOU HAVE COME TO THE LAKESHORE Unplugged Music Team and Congregation

Tú has venido a la orilla, no has buscado ni a sabios ni a ricos, tan sólo quieres que yo te siga.

Lord, you have come to the lakeshore, looking neither for wealthy nor wise ones; you only asked me to follow humbly.

Señor, me has mirado a los ojos y sonriendo has dicho mi nombre; en la arena he dejado mi barca; junto a ti buscaré otro mar.

O Lord, with your eyes you have searched me, and while smiling have spoken my name; now my boat’s left on the shoreline behind me; by your side I will seek other seas.

GIVING AND SERVING INVITATION MUSICAL OFFERING

Lu Shan YO CELEBRARÉ / I WILL CELEBRATE Unplugged Music Team and Congregation

Yo celebraré, cantaré a él, cantaré un nuevo canto. Alabaré, a Jehovah porque él ha vencido con poder. Yo celebraré, cantaré a él, cantaré un nuevo canto.

I will celebrate, sing unto the Lord, I will sing to God a new song. I will praise, I will praise, I will sing to God a new song. I will celebrate, sing unto the Lord, I will sing to God a new song.

DEDICATING OUR GIFTS

TAKE MY GIFTS

Take the fruit that I have gathered from the tree your Spirit sowed, harvest of your own compassion, juice that makes the wine of God. Now because your love has touched me, I have love to give away, now the bread of love is rising, loaves of love to multiply!

PRAYER

BECOMING DISCIPLES INVITATION

Amy Butler

During the singing, we invite you to come forward if you wish to make a public commitment to Christ or to join our community of faith. If you are interested in membership or have questions about Calvary, please contact the Church Office.

SONG OF INVITATION Eres mi protector.

ERES MI PROTECTOR / YOU ARE MY HIDING PLACE You are my hiding place. You always fill my heart with songs of deliverance. Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You. I will trust in You. Let the weak say, “I am strong in the strength of my Lord.” You are my hiding place. You always fill my heart with songs of deliverance. Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You.

WELCOMING NEW MEMBERS

Jason Smith

We give thanks that you have been guided by the hand of God to this community of faith. We pledge to love each other and to work to grow into the fullness of Christ together. Amen.

BENEDICTION AND CLOSING SONG

Amy Butler / MAKE US ONE

WORSHIP

CALVARY UNPLUGGED: THE MEN OF JUDGES. For six weeks this summer we’ll gather in Woodward Hall for worship, to participate in a less formal holy time together. Our theme this year is the book of Judges—more specifically, the men of Judges! Six storytellers from our congregation will guide us. The book of Judges introduces us to some very interesting men, to say the least. And Calvary has many gifted and theologically trained members. So Unplugged is a perfect opportunity to hear from them in worship. Join us for riveting Biblical texts and talented storytellers, all summer long!

TODAY COMBINED ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL. This summer we’re studying Christian terms that have lost their meaning and power, and how they can be restored. Join us Sundays at 9:45 a.m. in the Chapel. Contact Daniel Alcazar, daniel.alcazar@gmail.com. Topics and teachers include: August 4: Born Again, Amy Butler, August 11: Heaven, Raimundo Barreto, August 18: The Lord’s Supper, Jason Smith. THANKS TO TODAY’S MUSIC TEAM. Ridgeway Addison, Ashley Dalton, Eugenia Reyes and Susan Sevier—we appreciate your leadership today! Interested in participating in music this summer? Contact Cheryl Branham. CALVARY YARD SALE COLLECTION. Support Calvary’s fourth annual yard sale, October 16 - 18. Bring your items to Kendall Room 5. No clothing, shoes, large appliances, computers, but other items are welcome including clean boxes, bags, tissue paper. Benefitting Shalom Scholarship; contact Gretchen White, 202.462.5595.

COMING UP ALL-COME CHOIR. Many thanks to last Sunday’s fantastic choir! Join us again for All-Come Choir on Sunday, August 25. We rehearse at 10:00 a.m. in Music Suite, and we sing in worship at 11:00 a.m. in Woodward Hall. All are welcome! Contact Cheryl Branham. CALVARY DINNER GROUPS. Summers are crazy in DC, with people traveling for vacation and work. Over the course of the summer, our deacons are hosting informal potluck dinner groups all around our area. Join the Maryland group, August 25, hosted by Daniel and Lu Alcazar. Contact Rachel Johnson, Chair of Deacons, rnoelj@gmail.com. FINANCIAL HEALTH SUNDAY. Join the Stewardship Team on Sunday, September 8, for breakfast and an interactive seminar on personal finance during the Sunday School hour. To find out ways to volunteer, contact Corina Lopez or Bob Wood, clopez_260@hotmail.com or bob.wood@gmail.com. KINGMAN ISLAND DAY RETREAT. Bryan Moyer Suderman leads us in a day-long retreat at Kingman Island Park, Saturday, October 19. Enjoy food, music and fun at this relaxed fall gathering for the whole family. D.C. BAPTIST CONVENTION ANNUAL MEETING will be held October 28-29, at University Baptist Church, College Park, MD. All are invited to join the DCBC in celebrating the Year of Jubilee and solidifying the future story of the Convention. If you wish to be an elected delegate from Calvary please see Soren Dayton, Claudia Moore, or Amy Butler.
