Introduction Argentina has a longstanding, rich tradition as a ‘translating country’. While wars and dictatorships devastated Spain, Buenos Aires fostered the first-ever translation of authors as renowned as Faulkner, Camus, Hemingway, Malraux, Melville, among many others. The work was done by outstanding women and men of letters, including José Bianco, Juan Rodolfo Wilcock, Victoria Ocampo, Aurora Bernárdez and, last but not least, Jorge Luis Borges. Today, well into the XXI st. Century, there is strong evidence that this tradition has been kept alive. Translations published in Argentina are as varied and dynamic as the scene of independent publishing houses - the engines that have in fact driven this activity. The purpose of the catalogue is not to provide an exhaustive list; it only offers a sample of books translated between March 2009 and June 2010. But this sample leads to some clear conclusions: Argentine publishing houses translate new authors as well as classics; they are especially interested in high quality essays in all areas of Social Sciences. Novels, short stories and plays are also sought, and there is growing activity in children’s books and juvenile fiction. As it happens with any vibrant business, there is room for all specialties: selfhelp, how-to, religion, entertainment, etc. Consistent with global development, the prevalent source language is English, followed closely by French. Other mainstream European languages such as German, Italian and Portuguese are well represented, and there’s room even for minority languages like Danish. This year, as Argentine literature shows itself to the world as guest of honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair, we believe that the central role played by the world’s literature in shaping our national culture is also worthy of mention. That, in Argentina, this literature will find outstanding publishers, editors and translators, who will help irradiate the books to all Spanish-speaking countries through an efficient, competitive, global distribution network. Some publishers and literary agents abroad are not fully aware of the potential offered by our publishing houses when it comes to reaching the Spanish-speaking market. This catalogue is intended to encourage a review of the situation, for new routes to be set in the exchange of books and literature.

Fiction MY DOG TULIP / MI PERRA TULIP Ackerley, J. R.
ISBN 978-950-845-242-9 Translator: Adriana Astutti Beatriz Viterbo Editora Pages: 192 Format: 15 cm x 21 cm Original language: English CDD 823 Novel
The distinguished British man of letters J. R. Ackerley hardly thought of himself as a dog lover when, well into middle age, he came into possession of a German shepherd. To his surprise, she turned out to be the love of his life, the ‘ideal friend’ he had been searching for in vain for years. My dog Tulip (1956) is a bittersweet retrospective account of their sixteen-year companionship, as well as a profound and subtle meditation on the strangeness that lies at the heart of all relationships. In vivid and startling detail, Ackerley tells of Tulip’s often erratic behaviour and very canine tastes, and of his own fumbling but determined efforts to ensure an existence of perfect happiness for her.
KALTENBURG Beyer, Marcel
ISBN 978-987-628-072-3 Translator: Gabriela Adamo Edhasa Pages: 285 Format: 14 cm x 22.5 cm Original language: German CDD 833 Novel
“To live is to observe”, says the great Austrian zoologist Ludwig Kaltenburg, who lives with his animals in the famous Dresden Institute. After the building of the Berlin Wall in 1961, Kaltenburg suddenly disappears and returns to Vienna, taking with him the mysteries that have always surrounded his persona. Placed against the backdrop of East Germany’s history – marked by Communism, Stalin’s death, returning emigrants and a new kind of Anti-Semitism–, all the scientists at Dresden Institute know that they, too, are subject to constant observation. In this novel, Marcel Beyer shows that he himself is a masterful observer of human biographies, which he then skilfully uses to throw light on the complex German history.

FAHRENHEIT 451 Bradbury, Ray
ISBN 978-950-515-039-7 Translator: Nora Dotori Ediciones de la Flor Illustrator: Tim Hamilton Pages: 160 Format: 28 cm x 20 cm Original language: English CDD 813 Novel / Graphic Novel
This short novel, now a classic, draws the picture of an imagined American society in which the masses are guided by pure hedonism, critical thought has disappeared and reading has been outlawed. The central character, Guy Montag, works as a ‘fireman’ (which, in this society, means in fact a ‘bookburner’). The mission of the firemen is to burn any books they find, “for the good of humankind”. Written in the early years of the Cold War, the novel is a critique of the contemporary American society as Bradbury saw it. This adaptation as a graphic novel was authorized by the author himself, who wrote a special prologue.
BEAUTIFUL LOSERS / HERMOSOS PERDEDORES Cohen, Leonard
With the same poetic masterfulness that called the readers’ attention in his first novel– The favourite game–, Leonard Cohen narrates a haunting love story. Set in the Sixties, when rebellion and sexual liberation were the fixed routes for the younger generation, it became a cult book that sold more than 400,000 copies before going out of print. Now available in Spanish, this funny, brilliant, lyrical novel can be read as homage to those very special days.

HEART OF DARKNESS / EL CORAZÓN DE LAS TINIEBLAS Conrad, Joseph
ISBN 978-950-515-587-3 Translator: Eduardo Stilman Ediciones de la Flor Illustrator: Crist Pages: 128 Format: 30 cm x 22 cm Original language: English CDD 823 Novel / Graphic Novel
This brief novel is widely regarded as one of the most significant works of modern English literature. It follows its main character, Marlow, while he slowly narrates his Congolese adventures to a group of men aboard a ship anchored in the Thames Estuary. It takes him from dusk to late night to finish, and the darkening sky that accompanies his gestures masterfully parallels the atmosphere of his story. This new translation into Spanish, by well-known specialist Eduardo Stilman, is fully illustrated with dramatic drawings by Argentine artist Crist (Cristóbal Reinoso).

ISBN 978-987-599-126-2 Translator: Laura Fólica Libros del Zorzal Pages: 192 Format: 13.5 cm x 20 cm Original language: French CDD 867 Short Stories
Best known as the scriptwriter of Asterix –probably one of the most famous comics ever–, René Goscinny finally published a series of chronicles he had been writing as a hobby. They depict the small defects of man, like useless evil, destructive rumours, secret gluttony. Sixteen stories translated into Spanish for the first time, illustrated by the crème de la crème of European illustrators: Cabu, Zep, Druillet, Lauzier, Mezières, Juilliard, Tibet, Margerin, Barral, Mourier, Cestac, Tebo, Bertrand, Achdé and Boucq. Enchanting photographs that belonged to his family album close this very funny and mischievous book.

AN ISOLATED SCREAM / UN GRITO AISLADO / UM GRITO ISOLADO Kavalli, Luiz Antonio
A lighthouse in an isolated place in the world; the story of its keeper, his responsibility and, at the same time, his inability to intervene in a situation that will radically change his life, as well as that of others who are related to his past. The reader, left alone on the island together with the main character, lives this drama as if it were his own. Los Angeles Times’ ‘Book of the year’, Antarctica amazed its readers on both sides of the Atlantic. Its short stories, set in Ireland and the south of the USA, dive into relationships signed by obsession and betrayal. From a lady who stops her life and shuts herself away waiting for a reunion with her lover on the last night of the century, to a mother who prepares a soup for her husband with pictures of their disappeared daughter in order to keep alive the memory of an endless guilt, Keegan’s characters live in a world where dreams, thoughts and opportunities can have atrocious consequences. A sharp and disturbing book by one of the most talented contemporary Irish authors.

THE HOUR OF THE STAR / LA HORA DE LA ESTRELLA / A HORA DA ESTRELA Lispector, Clarice
This book tells us about a girl from the Brazilian Northeast named Macabea, the desperate writer Rodrigo S.M., a fortune teller who was a prostitute, a doctor who hates his job, an impatient boyfriend and a rooster who unexpectedly sings at the port of Rio de Janeiro. Lispector’s unique voice –regarded by the critics as one of the most important in modern Latin America– manages to include silence as well as screams, harmony as well as desperation, into a wonderful and witty novel. SHOPPING AND FUCKING / SHOPPING AND FUCKING Y OTRAS PIEZAS TEATRALES Ravenhill, Mark
ISBN 978-950-563-571-9 Translator: Gastón Sironi Ediciones Colihue Pages: 304 Format: 14 cm x 22 cm Original language: English CDD 822 Performing Arts / Theatre
A collection of four of the main works by the renowned British playwright Mark Ravenhill, outstanding member of the newer generation of European theatre: Shopping and fucking, Faust is dead, Handbag and Some explicit polaroids. Together with Sarah Kane, Anthony Neilson and Patrick Marber, Ravenhill was part of the In yer Face Group. The technological boom, the discredit of progress and the loss of values that reigned in the consumerist, neoliberal society of the 90’s are the main subjects of these plays. Junkies, gays, punks and young people are the protagonists. Ravenhill’s plays constantly break with the canon, while reinterpreting, at the same time, the English dramatic tradition from Shakespeare to Pinter.
COCO DIAS OR THE GOLDEN DOOR / COCO DIAS O LA PUERTA DORADA / COCO DIAS OU LA PORTE DORÉE Svit, Brina

ISBN 978-950-05-1858-1 Translator: Ariel Dilon Ediciones Corregidor Pages: 192 Format: 14 cm x 20 cm Original language: French CDD 891843 Novel
This is a real novel. A year ago I met Coco Dias, a tango dancer. And he made a proposal: you write about me, I teach you how to dance. Although I was writing something else, I accepted; I knew I’d never again receive such an offer. So here it is, a story that takes place in La porte dorée, Paris, and in Buenos Aires. Or I could say: here is the story of a tango dancer which gets confused with the history of tango. Or: here is the story of a woman who finally understands what it is to have a man in her arms. B.S.
Essay PASSAGE. TIME, MODERNITY AND DISTANCE / EL PASAJE. TIEMPO, MODERNIDAD Y DISTANCIA / LE PASSEUR DE TEMPS. MODERNITÉ ET NOSTALGIE Agacinski, Sylviane
The experience of time has changed: the being is not permanent but the pure event of passage. The passenger of time is our contemporary: cured of nostalgia for the eternal and the promises of history, he checks the ‘passing’ of being.

THE SACRAMENT OF LANGUAGE. ARCHEOLOGY OF THE OATH / EL SACRAMENTO DEL LENGUAJE. ARQUEOLOGÍA DEL JURAMENTO / IL SACRAMENTO DEL LINGUAGGIO. ARCHEOLOGIA DEL GIURAMENTO Agamben, Giorgio
ISBN 978-987-1556-30-4 Translator: Mercedes Ruvituso Adriana Hidalgo Editora Pages: 118 Original language: Italian CDD 190 Philosophy
Oaths have played a decisive role in the political history of the Western world. The current decadence of the oath can only be the sign of a crisis that concerns the existence of men and women as political animals. We are the first generations who live their collective lives without sworn word as an absolute and solemn union; this means that we are on the verge of new ways of political association, with realities and meanings we still have to explore. Giorgio Agamben’s book is not so much a search for the origin but a philosophical archaeology of the oath.

SECOND MANIFESTO FOR PHILOSOPHY / SEGUNDO MANIFIESTO POR LA FILOSOFÍA / SECOND MANIFESTE POUR LA PHILOSOPHIE Badiou, Alain
ISBN 978-987-500-141-1 Translator: María del Carmen Rodríguez Manantial Pages: 160 Format: 17 cm x 12 cm Original language: French CDD 190 Philosophy
Twenty years ago, Alain Badiou’s first Manifesto for Philosophy stood up against the all-pervasive proclamation of the ‘end’ of philosophy. Instead of this problematic of the end, he put forward the watchwords: ‘one more step’. The situation has considerably changed since then. Therefore, Badiou’s second manifesto seeks to separate philosophy from morality and from all those ‘philosophies’ that are as servile as they are ubiquitous. It demonstrates the power of certain eternal truths to illuminate action and, as such, to transport philosophy far beyond the figure of ‘the human’ and its ‘rights’. There, well beyond all moralism, in the clear expanse of the idea, life becomes something radically other than mere survival.
THE PRODUCTION OF DOMINANT IDEOLOGY / LA PRODUCCION DE LA IDEOLOGÍA DOMINANTE / LA PRODUCTION DE L’IDÉOLOGIE DOMINANTE Bourdieu, Pierre; Boltanski, Luc
14
ISBN 978-950-602-601-1 Translator: Heber Cardoso Ediciones Nueva Visión Pages: 160 Format: 13.50 cm x 18.50 cm Original language: French CDD 320.5 Political Science
The ideology of those who dominate imposes itself on society, using as a legitimating evidence for its existence classifications like property, competition, merit. According to an implacable circular logic, it contributes to reproducing the social order by turning the properties of those who dominate into the legitimate foundations for domination. This text, both political and scientific, provides the tools to dismantle the dominant social philosophy in the field of power and counter its arguments on behalf of the end of ideologies and the disappearance of classes and class interests.
CINEMA AND PHILOSOPHY / CINE Y FILOSOFÍA / CINEMA ET PHILOSOPHIE Chateau, Dominique
ISBN 978-950-563-732-4 Translator: Silvia Nora Labado Ediciones Colihue Pages: 208 Format: 15 cm x 22 cm Original language: French CDD 701 Film, Philosophy
Both historically and critically, Dominique Chateau analyzes the mutual influence of cinema and philosophy. Phenomenology, deconstructivist theories and analytic philosophy, among other schools, considerably enriched cinema by providing new concepts to be used by filmmakers. Cinema and philosophy traces a map of the relationship between the world of ideas and the world of realization: from Bergson, Benjamin, Eisenstein and Merleau-Ponty to Deleuze, Rancière and Nancy, it looks at authors who were seriously concerned with the way cinema could contribute to thought or philosophy could be turned into a cinematographical experience.
SOCIOLOGICAL INSIGHT. AN INTRODUCTION TO NON-OBVIOUS SOCIOLOGY / PERSPECTIVA SOCIOLÓGICA. UNA INTRODUCCIÓN A LA SOCIOLOGÍA NO OBVIA Collins, Randall
ISBN 978-987-558-177-7 Translator: Leila Gándara Universidad Nacional de Quilmes Pages: 240 Format: 20 cm x 14 cm Original language: English CDD 301 Sociology
This classic text offers a comprehensive introduction to many of sociology’s most interesting and elegant ideas. Beginning with a central problem –the distinction of sociology from other ways of looking at the world–, Randall Collins examines the limits of human rationality and sociological theories of religion, showing how they open up to a general theory of social rituals that holds the key to much of the rest of the field. With these conceptual tools in hand, he invites students to ponder how sociological analysis can illuminate a variety of urgent topics –power, crime, sex, love, the position of women in society– as it reveals both their visible social symbols and their paradoxical deeper structures.

SEMINAR: THE BEAST AND THE SOVEREIGN / SEMINARIO: LA BESTIA Y EL SOBERANO / SÉMINAIRE: LA BÊTE ET LE SOUVERAIN Derrida, Jacques
ISBN 978-987-500-142-8 Translator: Cristina de Peretti Manantial Pages: 464 Format: 23 cm x 16 cm Original language: English CDD 190 Philosophy
When Jacques Derrida died in 2004, he left behind a vast legacy of unpublished material, much of it in the form of written lectures. This book is the first part of the seminar, which took place in the years 2001-2003, under the title The beast and the sovereign. Both, the beast and the sovereign, are connected because neither animals nor kings are subject to the law—the sovereign stands above it, while the beast falls outside the law, below. Derrida traces this association through an astonishing array of texts, including La Fontaine, Hobbes, D. H. Lawrence, and Rousseau. Deleuze, Lacan, and Agamben also fall under critical examination, as Derrida focuses on the problems of force, right, justice, and the philosophical interpretations of the limits between man and animal.
THE GOVERNMENT OF ONESELF AND OF OTHERS / EL GOBIERNO DE SÍ Y DE LOS OTROS / LE GOUVERNEMENT DE SOI ET DES AUTRES Foucault, Michel
The lectures given by Michel Foucault in 1983/4 at the Collège de France launch an inquiry into the notion of parresia and continue his rereading of ancient philosophy. Through the study of this notion of truth-telling, of speaking out freely, Foucault re-examines Greek citizenship, showing how the courage of truth forms the forgotten ethical basis of Athenian democracy.

THE THREAD AND THE TRACES. TRUTH, FALSENESS, FICTION / EL HILO Y LAS HUELLAS. LO VERDADERO, LO FALSO, LO FICTICIO / IL FILO E LE TRACCE. VERO, FALSO, FINTO Ginzburg, Carlo
ISBN 978-950-557-837-5 Translator: Luciano Padilla Fondo de Cultura Económica Pages: 492 Format: 13.5 cm x 21 cm Original language: Italian History
Jews of Minorca and Brazilian cannibals, shamans and medieval romances, the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, photography and death, Voltaire, Stendhal, Flaubert, Auerbach, Kracauer, Montaigne: Carlo Ginzburg analyzes all this and much more in order to explore the multiple relationships between historical truth, fiction and falseness. What weaves together the essays in this book is, precisely, a thread –the thread of the story which, like Theseus, is there to help us find a way out of the labyrinth of reality and traces.
PATHOLOGIES OF REASON. PAST AND PRESENT OF CRITICAL THEORY / PATOLOGÍAS DE LA RAZÓN. HISTORIA Y ACTUALIDAD DE LA TEORÍA CRÍTICA / PATHOLOGIEN DER VERNUNFT. GESCHICHTE UND GEGENWART DER KRITISCHEN THEORIE Honneth, Axel
ISBN 978-987-1283-89-7 Translator: Griselda Mársico Katz Editores Pages: 213 Format: 15 cm x 23 cm Original language: German CDD 190 Philosophy
Axel Honneth has been instrumental in advancing the work of the Frankfurt School of critical theorists, rebuilding their effort to combine radical social and political analysis with rigorous philosophical inquiry. The eleven essays that make up this book, published over the past five years, reclaim the relevant themes of the Frankfurt School and follow the unifying themes and theses of critical social theory. Moreover, they address the possibilities of continuing this tradition amidst radically changed theoretical and social conditions.

MIRRORING PEOPLE. THE NEW SCIENCE OF HOW WE CONNECT WITH OTHERS / LAS NEURONAS ESPEJO. EMPATÍA, NEUROPOLÍTICA, AUTISMO, IMITACIÓN O DE CÓMO ENTENDEMOS A LOS OTROS / I NEURONI SPECCHIO. COME CAPIAMO CIÒ FANNO GLI ALTRI Iacoboni, Marco
ISBN 978-987-1283-98-9 Translator: Isolda Rodríguez Villegas Katz Editores Pages: 270 Format: 13 cm x 20 cm Original language: English Neurosciences
How do we know what others are thinking and feeling? Marco Iacoboni introduces readers to the world of mirror neurons and what they imply about human empathy, which, the author says, underlies morality. Mirror neurons allow us to interpret facial expressions of pain or joy and respond appropriately, and also help us learn by imitating, from newborns who instinctively copy facial gestures to adults learning a new skill. The author cites studies suggesting that, when mirror neurons don’t work properly, as in autism, encouraging imitative behaviour, or social mirroring, can help. Iacoboni’s expansive style and clear descriptions make for a solid introduction to cutting-edge neurobiology. REFLECTIONS ON LYING / REFLEXIONES SOBRE LA MENTIRA / REFLEXIONS SUR LE MENSONGE Koyré, Alexandre
In a text which is a remarkable exercise of philosophical logic, Koyré –a French scientist of Russian origin– examines the mechanisms of totalitarian lies. His reflections are an indispensable tool to understand political societies, from the worst dictatorships of history up to current democracies. “All technical progress is in the service of lies”, Koyré concludes after analyzing the discourse of nazi totalitarianism. Translator of the Bible, this French poet and philologist speaks of rhythm as the soul of language and of identity not as the opposite of alterity, but as of something that happens through alterity. He analyses different translations of the Bible, starting with Saint Jerome’s, and reflects about questions like the political ability inherent to any translation or the effectiveness of rhythm. May ’68: the Gap appeared in French for the first time in 1968. Twenty years later, their authors established a first balance of events. The present book faithfully reproduces both texts. Edgar Morin, Cornelius Castoriadis and Claude Lefort’s ‘hot’ analysis of the events as soon as they happened, plus the commentaries of those same philosophers twenty years later, enable the readers of today to catch a glimpse of May’ 68. Thus they can revisit, with ever renewed eyes, a key moment of the XXth. Century that was so important for our society, our culture and our future.

THE VALUE OF NOTHING. HOW TO RESHAPE MARKET SOCIETY AND REDEFINE DEMOCRACY / CUANDO NADA VALE NADA. CÓMO REFORMAR LA SOCIEDAD DE MERCADO Y REDEFINIR LA DEMOCRACIA Patel, Raj
ISBN 978-987-1307-29-6 Translator: Agustín Cosovschi Marea Editorial Pages: 224 Format: 16 cm x 24 cm Original language: English CDD 330 International Business & Economics
This short, timely and inspiring book reveals that our current crisis is not simply the result of too much of the wrong kind of economics. While we need to rethink our economic model, Patel argues that the larger failure beneath the food, climate and economic crises is a political one. If economics is about choices, Patel writes, it isn’t often said who gets to make them. The Value of Nothing offers a fresh and accessible way to think about economics and the choices that we will all need to make in order to create a sustainable economy and society.

Capitalism experiences a severe crisis every ten years, but only once in a century it faces an economic earthquake as intense as the so-called 2008 ‘black autumn’. The entire financial system sunk and a doctrine cracked: that of neo-liberalism, responsible for market deregulation and uncontrolled speculation for the last thirty years. Ramonet describes the precise working of the mechanisms that produced the crack and analyzes the eventual consequences –social and geopolitical– that could come attached. He also proposes a eries of concrete measures to be taken in order to re-found economy on the basis of equality and democracy.
THE MUTE WORD / LA PALABRA MUDA / LA PAROLE MUETTE Rancière, Jacques
ISBN 978-987-251406-8 Translator: Cecilia González Eterna Cadencia Editora Pages: 240 Format: 14 cm x 22 cm Original language: French CDD 801.95 Philosphy
Jacques Rancière, one of the most important living philosophers, performs an exquisite tour through the works of Victor Hugo, Balzac, Flaubert, Proust, Mallarmé and Artaud, in which he inquires about the nature and modality of the change of paradigm that destroyed the normative system of ‘Belles Lettres’. As it wonders about the contradictions and tensions in literature nowadays, The mute word develops a programmatic presentation of Rancière’s ideas on literature. The book offers a philosophical and historical analysis that will become an unavoidable reference for contemporary literary criticism.
HOW THE COLD WAR TRANSFORMED PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE. TO THE ICY SLOPES OF LOGIC / CÓMO LA GUERRA FRÍA TRANSFORMÓ LA FILOSOFÍA DE LA CIENCIA. HACIA LAS HELADAS LADERAS DE LA LÓGICA Reisch, George A.
ISBN 978-987-558-178-4 Translator: Daniel Blanco Universidad Nacional de Quilmes Pages: 480 Format: 15 cm x 23 cm Original language: English CDD 501 Science Philosophy
This book is the first in-depth study of the development of philosophy of science in the United States during the Cold War. It documents the political vitality of logical empiricism and Otto Neurath´s Unity of Science movement, when these projects emigrated to the United States in the Thirties, and follows their depolitization by a convergence of intellectual, cultural and political forces in the Fifties. Students of logical empiricism and the Vienna Circle often treat these as strictly intellectual, non-political projects. Yet the refugee philosophers of science were highly active politically; their debates about values inside and outside science were scrutinized politically, both from within and from outside the profession, by such institutions as the FBI. 23

Conrad Russell’s book on academic freedom sees the problem in simple terms: the state versus universities, specifically the British state, which wants to expand access, cut costs and control academic life, versus British universities, which want to pursue knowledge for its own sake. He argues for academic freedom on the grounds that academics know best how to do certain things, such as decide how long a degree should take, whether students should be allowed to take outside work while doing a degree, what research should be funded, what appointments should be made, and how many students should be admitted. The book is well argued and well written. It is just the thing for traditionalists who want a defence of universities in the face of a British state intent on expanding access while cutting costs.

POLITICS IN THE CAVERN / LA POLITICA EN LA CAVERNA / LA POLITIQUE DANS LA CAVERNE Terray, Emmanuel
ISBN 978-987-632-900-2 Translator: Carina Battaglia Ediciones Del Sol Pages: 440 Format: 12 cm x 20 cm CDD 128 Social Science / Anthropology
Emmanuel Terray questions the apparent serenity with which the academic establishment has accepted the existence of a ‘political anthropology of Ancient Greece’ as a ‘discipline’. Politics in the Cavern aims to break with this conformist serenity: the ideas we have received from the Ancient Greeks must necessarily be revised, even if this weakens solid philosophical systems. Ancient Greek Politics –sophistics, tragedy and even Hippocratic medicine included– have a lot to say about our own political poverty, twenty-five hundred years later. We are still living under democracies in times of tragedy. Only we have lost the sense of our tragedy.

In France, Victor Cousin made philosophy into an affair of state. He dissociated it from religion and separated it from the revolutions. This book leads back to those origins but also displays a paradox: he and his successors were participants in the formation of a modern nation which found itself embracing the philosophy in which it was ultimately established. In the true politics of philosophy, the state is literally impossible.

These studies on the imaginary include thoughts on the production of images as well as on their properties and social impact. The imaginary is an asystematic set of images which have different nature and origins, which may collide both in an individual and within social life, resisting any systematization. The book works along the line founded by Gilbert Durand in France during the sixties; besides the main essay of the book, Emmanuel Terray includes three other works about the structuring function of myths, an aesthetical and epistemological analysis of the crowd and an anthropological analysis of space.

When the world (and especially the United States) read about the My Lay Massacre in the newspapers, there was a turning point in the Vietnam War. The journalist Seymour Hersh discovered one of the bloodiest operations that his country’s army had carried out in the Far East. A hundred years earlier, William Howard Russell had become the first war correspondent to cover, from the very Crimean front, the legendary Charge of the Light Brigade. The Great Newspaper Articles proposes a historical journey through stories written by journalists who have based –and still base– their undisputed prestige not only on the facts they reveal, but on the literary skills they put to work: genuine masterpieces. Passion, honesty, in-depth investigation and literary flight, are the keys to a better journalism that we gather together here. FOUR JEWS ON PARNASSUS. Theodor Adorno was the archetypal nonJewish German Jew. Walter Benjamin swayed between the German Jew and the German of Jewish origin. Gershom Scholem was a committed Zionist and Arnold Schönberg converted to Protestantism for professional reasons but later returned to Judaism. The creator of the contraceptive pill, Carl Djerassi, a refugee from Hitler’s Austria himself, creates a dialogue between these four great intellectuals, about fraternity, religious identity and heritage; he also reveals some aspects of their lives –especially the relationship with their wives– which have frequently been ignored, misunderstood or considered in frivolous ways. 29

The present biography has been written with the strong conviction that a detailed observation of Duchamp’s life will allow for a privileged access to his work. ISBN 978-950-845-244-3 Translator: Florencia Garramuño Beatriz Viterbo Editora Pages: 256 Format: 15 cm x 21 cm Original language: Portuguese CDD BR869 Memoir 30
In Childhood, published in 1945 and based on Graciliano Ramos’ own memories, each sentence says a lot with minimum resources. With unadorned prose and accurate dryness, the author describes the rough environment of the north-eastern region of Brazil at the beginning of the XXth. Century. In his Jornal de Crítica, Álvaro Lins states: “An unbearable world of punishments, privations and shames”. Both as a portrait of a region and a series of social structures (authoritarian political organizations), this masterpiece opens up a new discursive space among Brazilian letters. Childhood is important not only for its literary value and its violent beauty but also for the clues it contains to Ramos’ personality as well as to his work.

Elite Squad is the semi-fictional account of the authors’ experience in BOPE and describes, with gruesome details and shocking prose, life inside this select cadre of highly skilled men. The book was produced into a controversial and award-winning film.

In Eastern spiritual traditions, the mandala is a form of sacred art that describes the completeness of Being. In its simplest forms, mandalas are circles with four primary directions oriented around a strong central focus. Working with The Mandala of Being will let us direct our mind towards the Now, better communicate our authentic inner nature, and begin to understand the relationship between thought and emotion. This is how the present moment turns into our territory, because it is here that we find the essence of life and the truth of who we are and why we are here.
