MAKING SENSE OF MASS EDUCATION Gordon Tait presents a fresh assessment of traditional issues associated with education – class, race, gender, discrimination and equity – to dispel myths and assumptions about the classroom. Written for students, practising teachers and academics alike, Making Sense of Mass Education presents an engaging summary of the current educational landscape in Australia and looks at fundamental issues in society as they relate to education.

Myth #2 Schooling success is only about individual ability ‘Given we all sit the same exams, it seems perfectly appropriate to claim that education is a fair race, and that hence the winners deserve their victory.’ Research into schooling success presents a more complex picture. The dominant model – that of critical theory – points to the vital role that schooling plays in the processes of social reproduction. According to this reasoning, wealth buys educational success, that success guarantees more wealth, which then buys the next generation’s educational success. Individual ability is only one small part of this cycle.

The book challenges preconceptions about social class, gender and ethnicity discrimination; highlights the interplay between technology, media, popular culture and schooling; and inspects the relevance of ethics and philosophy in the modern classroom.

Updated to meet the changing educational landscape, this new edition includes: Current information regarding literature, statistics and legal policies A significant expansion on the previous edition’s structure of derailing traditional myths about education as a point of discussion Two new chapters: Big Data – Addresses the advent of giant data sets, and the consequences of this for governance. The chapter looks in particular at standardised testing such as NAPLAN and its implications for education. Globalisation – Addresses the global economy and cultures and their influence on the Australian education system. Examines global

Each chapter addresses the central myths that surround the institutions of mass education. The myths present common sense assumptions that surround each of the central issues relating to mass education. These myths are unpacked by assessing the degree to which these explanations still hold water in light of more recent theoretical approaches. Example:

Making Sense of Mass Education, 2nd edition is an entertaining and accessible analysis of traditional issues associated with mass education.
