LEGENDARY CRIMINALS: FROM THE PAGES OF HISTORY TO THE SILVER SCREEN
Brian Bixby | Ph.D. in History, UMass Amherst They’re “larger than life” figures . . . because we’ve let the story overtake the truth of their lives. But why do we turn killers, robbers, and gangsters into heroes, or at least anti-heroes? And which ones get that treatment? This course matches up the real-life stories of several of these figures with the legends they’ve become, as told by the movies. Each class begins with a discussion of a movie about one of these figures, then goes on to compare it to the real life of these criminals, and looks at how the person became the legend. We start with some English examples, then move on to the gunslingers of the Wild West and the gangsters of the 1920s and 1930s here in the U.S. Movie list and bibliography provided.
