‘... we truly operate as an all– year club these days, thanks to volunteers and key sponsors ... ’ Josh Easby, the secretary of Cambridge Football Club, reflects on a busy summer for our club ...  we may be into the second week of the season but for many of our club members, coaches and players, there hasn’t been much of a break since the end of the last season. No sooner had the 2015 winter season drawn to a close when we saw the start of the Jet Creative 5–a–side Summer League, a midweek competition that provided fun football for about 300 men and women, many of them playing for business house or social teams. Though we didn’t host any ASB Premiership games this past summer, we were still

involved in supporting WaiBOP United as a sponsor, and hosting a visit by the national champions Auckland City who put on an hour–long fun session for 40 of our juniors. Last month, we hosted our sixth annual Cambridge Sevens tournaments for men and women, and began our pre–season build–up. Our U–17 team worked hard over summer, raising the funds so they could take part for the first time in Auckland City’s national youth tournament. Off the pitch, we’ve been busy too. The new changing rooms block has been painted (about 400 hours of unpaid labour), and we’ve done some reconstruction and repainting inside both our senior and junior clubrooms to make them more pleasant to use. We also opted to hold our annual Quiz Night at the start of the season, instead of the traditional timing towards the end of winter, meaning our volunteers have been busy ensuring that event was a success. We truly operate an all–year club these days and it’s only possible through the work of our volunteers, and the support of key sponsors such as Barrott’s Plumbing, Calnar Business Systems and Cambridge Hire who help keep our wheels turning. Thanks to them all.

Senior teams struggle for points in opening games  cambridge’s new season got underway last weekend with only the women’s first team managing a first round victory. The Cambridge FC club’s men’s first team started the defence of their WaiBOP Premiership title with a 2-1 loss at Waikato Unicol who are being tipped to be one of the competition’s strongest sides this year. Cambridge opened the scoring through Jordan Silvester in the sixth minute and took their lead into the half-time break. But in the second spell, Unicol fought back strongly and levelled through Gareth Webb before striker Gavin Clark scored the winner against his former club, making it 2-1. Cambridge’s cause was made more difficult by the 80th minute sending off of defender Nathan Claridge. The Carters Cambridge Player of the Day was young goalkeeper Rex Fowler. In the Waikato Championship, Cambridge got off to a flying start when Callum MacLeod put his team ahead in the first minute of their fixture against Waikato Unicol’s reserves. MacLeod took the Golden Boot last season when playing for Cambridge’s U-17 side, winners of the WaiBOP Youth League, and he and other graduates from the youth team have made the transition to senior federation competition. But the championship side allowed Unicol to equalise through Taylor Bell-Booth, to make it 1-1 at half-time, before Hamish Utteridge scored the winner for Unicol. In the Waikato A division, Cambridge drew 3-3 at John Kerkhof Park after a match that went end-to-end.

The home side took a 2-0 lead through an Ollie Harris penalty and a Mauro Pereira goal before Melville clawed the game back to 2-2. The third Cambridge goal came from Aaron Huesser. The Cambridge C team lost 3-1 to Waikato Unicol while the club’s D1 lost 1-0 at Te Awamutu. The Cambridge women’s team opened their season with a 6-0 home win against Huntly Thistle. Scorers for Cambridge were Astrid Howarth (2), Kaylee Oosthuysen (2), Taylor Jones and Gemma Martin. The Cambridge Hire Player of the Day was Howarth, now into her third season of first team football.

Rule changes WAIKATO divisional games will feature an innovative interchange system for the first time this year. At the suggestion of local referees, WaiBOP clubs have adopted a system which allows teams to make a maximum of 10 substitutions during a competition match. Unlike rolling subs, where there is no limit to the number of changes made, the referees will take responsibility for monitoring the number of interchanges. The change is expected to minimise the risks of deliberate time–wasting and enable referees to enforce properly managed entries and exits to the field of play.

youth team reach knockout stage at prestigious tournament

U–17 coach Adrian Clark is interviewed by Sky Sports during the tournament at Seddon Fields, Auckland.

 ABOUT OUR UNDER 17 TEAM The squad won the WaiBOP Football U–17 Federation League last season, though most of the squad were eligible to play in that age group for at least another year. In 2014, most of the players were members of the club’s U–15 squad which took the WaiBOP Football U–15 Federation League title. Adrian Clark has coached the U–15 and U–17 teams to both championships.

 cambridge’s u–17 youth team have done the club proud in their debut performance at Auckland City FC’s annual tournament. After spending several years on the tournament’s waiting list for entries, Cambridge got an invitation to this year’s event, contested by many of the best youth teams in the country. Watched by scouts for national age group teams and professional clubs such as the Wellington Phoenix, the young players spent three days in group and knockout games. Cambridge reached the quarter–finals of the tournament, having finished runners– up in their group with wins against against Central Gold (2-0), Christchurch’s Coastal Spirit (3-0) and Auckland’s Glenfield Rovers (3-1). The team drew 0-0 with Oratia United and their only pool loss was to group winner Onehunga Sports. The side lost their quarter– final 2–0 to Western Springs.

CLUB NEWS / www.cambridgesoccer.co.nz

Five–a–side champions  after a summer of Wednesday night football, Cambridge found its latest champions of five–a–side football. Danny Doolans (pictured right) and the Knitting Club were the respective winners of Groups A and B on finals night of Cambridge FC’s Jet Creative 5-a-side Summer League. The runners-up in Group A were 2 Goals 1 Cup while Arrows came second in Group B. The Wednesday evening matches brought to a close two months of competition with more than 300 players enjoying the social and business house league.

The club thanks all those who made it possible, especially Greg and Tania Zeuren who organised entries, weekly draws and ensured everything was in place for the games to be played. Our thanks too to sponsors Jet Creative who support our club in many ways, including being suppliers of signage and apparel for some of our senior teams.

Successful fundraiser  cambridge FC’S annual Quiz Night was successful in raising more than $3,000 towards the club’s fundraising campaign to level and improve playing surfaces at its junior fields. Fifteen quiz teams gathered at Cambridge East School to battle through eight rounds of trivia and to be entertained by co-hosts Peter Martens (club president and quizmaster) and The Breeze’s breakfast host Camille Guzzwell. The quiz was won by Orange14 – a team whose name reflected the Dutch heritage of some team members – and dozens of raffle and auction prizes went to enthusiastic attendees. The club acknowledges the efforts of organisers Jamie McKean and Alistair McQuarters, and others who made the night possible including Tania Zeuren, Peter Martens, Camille Guzzwell and all the

sponsors who donated prizes. The event was staged in association with club sponsor Barrott’s Plumbing whose owner Steve Barrott was given a special round of applause as members took the opportunity to thank him for his countless hours of work at the club.

In 2012, Cambridge FC announced that John Kerkhof Park would also become the home base for Cambridge Baseball Club.  2013: Cambridge FC and the neighbouring Cambridge Harriers and Athletics Club began a partnership, enabling the football club to play some games at the adjacent athletics track while it developed John Kerkhof Park. In 2013, the club won the Soccer Shop Waikato Plate and hosted premium events such as the Soccer Shop Waikato Cup Final, the Waikato v Bay of Plenty All Stars game, and the WaiBOP Women's All Stars v WaiBOP National League side. In late 2013, the club was appointed as the home ground for five ASB Premiership matches for new franchise WaiBOP United. This meant Cambridge became one of six bases for national league football in New Zealand (the others are Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin).

The appointment led to the club becoming an all-year operation, with investment in better facilities including upgraded playing surfaces, new changing rooms (scheduled for mid–2014) and a new irrigation system.   2014: The club's first team finished runners–up in the 2014 WaiBOP Federation Division 1, while the U-15 team won the Federation Youth League. Our women won the Waikato Women's Cup. The Cambidge Lacrosse Club moved its playing base to John Kerkhof Park in 2014. In 2014, the club won a series of high profile awards for its work in football and in the wider community. WaiBOP Football named the club its 2014 Club of the Year for its successful efforts to host ASP Premiership fixtures and other premium matches. Cambridge also won two WaiBOP Best Practice awards in 2014 (for building partnerships with sponsors, and for the participation of women at our club). The club was named Waipa District’s 2014 Supreme winner for the Truspower Community Awards, becoming only the second sports club to take this award. This

also led to the club’s nomination for the national Trustpower Community Awards to be held in Wellington in March 2015. Cambridge completed its hat-trick of major awards in 2014, being named Waipa District’s Sports Club of the Year. We were finalists in the Waikato Sports Club of the Year while chairman Greg Zeuren was named Sports Administrator of the Year for both Waipa and the Waikato in 2014.  2015: As the club entered its 68th season, it did so as an all–year operation, providing winter football for 600+ players, spring/early summer 5-a-side football for social players and acting as a base for national league summer football. It continued to make history — on February 6, 2015, it staged the first game of beach football by women played to FIFA rules and pitch standards in New Zealand, at the Karapiro Sandcourts. In March 2015, construction began of the club’s $200,000 extension to its changing rooms, providing six more sets of showers/ changing rooms for local and visiting players. On 25 May 2015, the club staged its first ever international match when Fiji and Hungary came to Cambridge for an U–20

international as preparation for the FIFA U–20 World Cup tournament. In July 2015, our club was awarded the Quality Club Mark by New Zealand Football, becoming only the fourth club in our region to achieve the 1 Star status, and becoming one of fewer than 30 clubs throughout the contry to earn the QCM.  Our players Probably the club's best known past player is New Zealand international striker Chris Wood who joined English Championship club Leeds United for $4.6 million from Leicester City in July 2015. Wood made his senior debut at Cambridge as a 14–year–old, having previously played for our juniors. Another former New Zealand international is Maria Anderton, who played for the Football Ferns in 1987, and captained the Cambridge women’s A team for 12 seasons until her retirement as a player in 2014.  Life Members Elected life members: Vic Butler, W.J.Sugden, Bert van Doorne, Eric Sugden, John Kerkhof, Alan Busst, Harry Bekkers, Hans Rakely, Rod Larnach, Kerry Dauphin, Bill Brown, Robert Bradley, Peter Martens.

Programme cuts injury risk  CAMBRIDGE FC are getting behind a warm–up programme that has been proven to reduce the risk of injuries by 30%. It’s the FIFA 11+ Complete Warm-Up Programme for youth and senior players and Senior Men’s Club Captain Lee Turpett and U–13 youth coach Steve Thomas recently attended a NZ Football–WaiBOP Football workshop to learn how it works. The programme has direct performance benefits for footballers — making fitter, faster and more agile players as well as reducing the risk of all injuries by 30%. It is designed to be delivered by coaches, is easy to learn and implement into existing training sessions and completion of the course results in FIFA 11+ certification in as

little as two hours. The All Whites and Football Ferns have been using FIFA 11+ for some time and all the ASB Premiership teams undertook to use it last summer season. WaiBOP Football plans to encourage all 106 affiliated clubs and schools to adopt the programme, and is running workshops to team club representatives how to use it. So what is FIFA 11+? “The programme takes 15–20 minutes to do and is designed to replace a standard warm–up,” explains NZ Football’s doctor, Mark Fulcher. “If it is done twice a week, it reduces the risk of injury by 30% and the risk of severe injury by 50%. These are things like an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury in the knee.”
