The History of Cambridge Football Club Cambridge FC was established in 1948, based in the heart of the town. In 1967, Cambridge moved from the city to our new home on Vogel Street known as John Kerkhof Park - named after one of our great former club presidents. In 1974 Cambridge competed for the first time in the Northern League and played in the competition in various tiers of the league till the present day with only a few years playing in WaiBOP Premiership. In 2013 Cambridge was appointed as the home ground for WaiBOP United in the National League. In 2015, CFC hosted its first international match between Fiji and Hungary, as the teams preparation for the Under 20 FIFA World Cup. Cambridge has had its share of professional and internationally capped players coming through the ranks of the club. Notably players like Chris Wood, Che Bunce, Katie Duncan and Andrea Rogers have all worn the red and white stripes. In recent years Cambridge has had 4 players represent New Zealand at age group world cups as well as a handful of players playing for the national futsal team as well.

Coaches Corner - Our View! On behalf of Cambridge Football Club we would like to welcome Oratia United FC to John Kerkhof park for round 6 of the 2022 NRFL Division 2 campaign. We would like to say a big thank you to all of our sponsors, volunteers and committee members for the ongoing work they put in behind the scenes to make sure everything is in place for game days like today. Last weekend we welcomed Waikato rivals Ngaruawahia to John Kerkhof park where we saw both teams go head to head in a very intense derby match. With A goal in the first few minutes for the reds only to be called offside the red men took the front foot in the game leading to a Patrick Woodlock finish from just inside the 18 yard box. Not long after a well taken penalty by the new Ngaruawahia signing made the game 1.1 just before half time a well taken finish from again new signing mark withers with a diving header at the front post making it 2.1. Our boys thought extremely hard and left everything out on the pitch and we take all the positives and we move forward into this weeks game. This weekend we expect a very tough game from Auckland side Oratia as they come to Cambridge in search of getting their first points on the board. The boys are in good spirits although not getting the result we hoped for / may have deserved last weekend we come away taking many positives and after a big week of training the boys are raring to go for this weeks match. Once again I would like to thank our sponsors, volunteers and committee members for all of their hard work and lastly a big thank you to all the supports who have turned up week in, week out to support the boys. We look forward to seeing you all down at John Kerkhof park for another big game.

The Captains View... Afternoon everyone and another home game for the reds. Losing a derby always hurts, and last Saturday was hard to swallow. The boys put in such hard work and for majority of the game matched an experienced Ngaruawahia. Although the result didn’t go our way we can be very proud of the performance against the league leaders, a game we deserved more from. Today we welcome Oratia United to John Kerkhof park. The past few years we have had really good battles with Oratia who have played a similar style of football to us. We are both looking to show the league that our current standings are not reflective of ability and so todays contest will be a real arm wrestle, something we are not shy of. Im excited for todays match and for some of the young players to really show what they’ve got. Once again, we look forward to your support.

UP THE REDS!!!

Paddy Woodlock

Captain of the NRFL Mens Division 2 Reds.

Our Women - Waikato Division 1 This week our Women’s first team welcome top of the table Taupo to John Kerkhof. And welcome back to our legendary supporters. Last week we had a fast paced and exciting game against Matamata where we unfortunately lost 3-0 - A score we don’t feel reflected how close the game felt for our ladies. We played some lovely football and we’re looking forward to building on our momentum in the coming weeks. We are anticipating a tough game this weekend but looking forward to the challenge Taupo will bring. We’re also very excited to be playing alongside our extended family, with the Development Div2 ladies team also at home this weekend. An exciting weekend for Cambridge Football Club Women’s Football so make sure you all come down and make some noise for us! All our ladies are doing an incredible job especially considering the impact of covid and some early season injuries. Our team is shaping up to have a solid season and play some beautiful football.

Our Women - Waikato Division 2 Last week we had a hard game against a great team who had a core of players who have been at their club for a great many years and it showed; inspiring our team for future games as we have much to work on and hope to bring this to our game vs Te Awamutu. Elliot made a tremendous effort in goal to fend off the many potential goals, we hope to work on our attack this Sunday. The team we are coming up against is an unknown new team so we cannot anticipate how it will play out, we hope to use our combinations from practice on the field, With covid out of the way this week and those coming back from injury we should be a great force! The team have worked incredibly well together and have been participating and working as a team since day one and we are so proud of them! We can’t wait to continue tackling on the season with some awesome people by our side! Our squad will continue to work on different ways of attack and defensive skills to further our skills which we will utilise on the Sunday shift! Our team is kicking it, so proud of them all already

Our Champs - Waikato Championship An injury and illness depleted Cambridge Champs travelled to Links Ave to play Tauranga City this weekend. Player coach Josh Dagnall was needed in nets for the second time this season as regular stopper – Rex Fowler, was in isolation. Champs old boy - Sam Reidy was also called up from the ressies to help cover a depleted backline with El capitano, Sam Garmonsway away with illness. The game was played out in gale force winds which made for a scrappy encounter. This was never more evident than when a Cambridge corner played from the right flew up in to the air before flying back towards Mason Woodall on the corner flag, ultimately flying out for a throw-in from the side it came from (yes, it was that bad). Chances were few and far between in the first half with both teams mainly battling the elements to string together some sort of football before the Tauranga striker was put through on goal slotting the ball past the outrushing Dagnall only for Aaron Jenkins to race back and clear off the line. Tauranga started to gain control of the midfield battle and threatened from the edge of the box more frequently as the half wore on and eventually the pressure paid off. A curling effort from the edge of the box was tipped on to the bar by Dagnall only for the ball to fall to the Tauranga winger who came in unmarked to head the ball back towards a despairing Dagnall who could only deflect the ball in to the roof of the net as he rushed to get back to his feet from the initial stop. Cambridge stepped up the tempo a bit in response with a good long-range effort from Dylan Blair being tipped over the Tauranga bar and a flurry of Cambridge corners all building up to a rare bit of good football. Woodall advanced towards the City backline before playing a brilliant reverse pass through to Blair who expertly dispatched to make it 1-1 right before the break. Reidy came on at half time replacing the injured Tom Woutersen and Cambridge faced a bit of an uphill battle against the wind, being pegged back in to their own box for large spells. Tauranga were mainly restricted to half chances and long efforts however, as the champ’s backline held firm. We did have two good opportunities on the break through Aaron Huesser and substitute Peter Buesnel, both matched by some alert goalkeeping but in the end a draw was probably a fair result. A depleted Cambridge continuing their unbeaten run, in tough conditions against a very strong opposition is a draw the lads are pretty happy with. Man of the match went to big Aaron Jenkins at the back. Next week the champs make the long journey across the highway to local rivals Unicol for what should be a feisty encounter.

Josh Dagnall

Champs Player Coach
