‘... we believe we’re ready to return to the Northern League ... ’ Josh Easby, the acting secretary of Cambridge Football Club, looks ahead to a new season ...  AS OUR NEW SEASON gets underway, our club can be confident that we’re in a strong position on and off the pitch. Opening day results for senior football indicated all our teams are going to be competitive in their divisions. After near–misses the past two seasons, our first team will be challenging hard for another WaiBOP Premiership title and the chance to win promotion to the Northern League. Over summer, Ngaruawahia United chose to relinquish its berth in the Northern League and the club now has to play through the

Waikato grades to try to compete at WaiBOP Championship and then Premiership level. It’s quite a tumble for a club that was performing well in the Northern League’s Division 1 only a few seasons ago. More disturbing is the fact that Ngaruawahia joins Matamata Swifts and AFC Fury as WaiBOP region clubs to opt to resign from the Northern League. All cited as reasons the difficulties in finding suitable players willing to travel at weekends, and the extra demands of having to field a team in the Northern League’s reserves division. When Cambridge were relegated from the league in 2011 (we didn’t resign - we lost our place by losing a play-off series), our club restructured the way it manages its top three men’s teams, and how it develops teenage players. We’ve also got new facilities and diverse income streams with sponsorships, hireage of our facilities and fundraising events such as our Cambridge Sevens. We believe we’re ready to return to the Northern League but we’ll be mindful of the challenges that got the better of other clubs.

REGIONAL NEWS / www.waibopfootball.co.nz

Opening day wrap–up  THE OPENING DAY of the 2017 Loaded WaiBOP Premiership, the Waikato Bay of Plenty

region’s top regional football league, saw 29 goals fly into the back of the net across six contrasting games. Cambridge, slight title favourites heading into the season, bagged a point at Taupo, while Otumoetai FC and Matamata Swifts were both big winners. The match at Taupo’s Crown Park began superbly for the locals as Finlay Smith gave his side a second minute lead. Taupo maintained a good chunk of the possession through the first half but the match changed when they were reduced to ten men as half time loomed. Donovan Latham, on his Cambridge debut, grabbed the equaliser for the visitors in the second half as they eventually wore Taupo down to secure a point. Both sides would have been relatively happy with the draw but Cambridge may be ruing their inability to make the most of the extra man for more than half of the match. Otumoetai FC registered the most healthy win of the day after beating SGS Papamoa 4-0 at Gordon Spratt Park. Jay Silcock scored a first half brace to give Otumoetai a comfortable half time lead, before two further strikes, from veteran Russell Wakeley and Ben Jackson, completed the rout after the break. Nearly a third of the Saturday’s goals came at the Matamata Domain where the Swifts defeated Tauranga Boys’ College 6-4 in the most open encounter of the weekend. Goals from Chris Walker, Bjorn Vossen and Dayne Willemsen saw Matamata into a 3-1 half time lead, before Walker and Willemsen struck again, either side of a Brad West goal to stretch the margin to 6-2. The students, however, looked sharp on the break and a couple of goals in the final quarter gave the final scoreline a quite remarkable look.

Danny Styles wins an aerial challenge at Taupo.

Alexander Elliott, with a brace of his own, Adam Davidson and Scott Walpole hit Boys’ College’s goals. Swifts coach, Paul Richardson, focused on the positive elements of his team’s performance. “Our attacking play looked great at times, and we probably should have had a few more goals. Obviously we’re not pleased to have let in four, though, so we have a bit of work to do on our defensive transitions.” West Hamilton United was the only one of the three promoted sides to pick up three

points, winning by the odd goal in seven at Rotorua United. As a bonus, they also lifted the Federation Challenge Shield after Rotorua began the season with it following Ngongotaha’s promotion to the Northern Region Football League. A Reuben Henderson hat trick was the standout individual showing for the visitors who led 2-0 at the break before fending off a second half comeback from their hosts. It was something of a self-inflicted decline, however. Leading by three goals and cruising, West Hamilton then lost two players to dissent-related red cards as Rotorua pulled the scores back level, before Henderson’s penalty four minutes from the end settled the match. Rotorua had a player red carded after the final whistle. West Hamilton coach, Shane Ridgway, said it was a crazy afternoon for his side. “At 3-0 and with the game under control it’s then about game management,” said Ridgway. “The match could have gone one of two ways and unfortunately we chose to take the more difficult path. I don’t have any complaints about the two red cards. We talked about being disciplined before the match, so that was disappointing. But we went to Rotorua looking for the three points, so in that sense it was job done.” Tauranga’s Old Blues won 3-1 at Edmonds Judd Te Awamutu thanks to goals from Andy Cooper, Jarrad Bailey and Karl Bryant, while first half strikes from Nick Brooke and Gavin Clark saw Waikato Unicol ease to a 2-0 home victory over Melville United.

In late 2013, the club was appointed as the home ground for five ASB Premiership matches for new franchise WaiBOP United. This meant Cambridge became one of six bases for national league football in New Zealand (the others are Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin).

The appointment led to the club becoming an all-year operation, with investment in better facilities including upgraded playing surfaces, new changing rooms (scheduled for mid–2014) and a new irrigation system.   2014: The club's first team finished runners–up in the 2014 WaiBOP Federation Division 1, while the U-15 team won the Federation Youth League. In 2014, the club won a series of high profile awards for its work in football and in the wider community. WaiBOP Football named the club its 2014 Club of the Year for its successful efforts to host ASP Premiership fixtures and other premium matches. Cambridge also won two WaiBOP Best Practice awards in 2014 (for building partnerships with sponsors, and for the participation of women at our club). The club was named Waipa District’s 2014 Supreme winner for the Truspower Community Awards, becoming only the second sports club to take this award. This

also led to the club’s nomination for the national Trustpower Community Awards to be held in Wellington in March 2015. Cambridge completed its hat-trick of major awards in 2014, being named Waipa District’s Sports Club of the Year. We were finalists in the Waikato Sports Club of the Year while chairman Greg Zeuren was named Sports Administrator of the Year for both Waipa and the Waikato in 2014.   2015: As the club entered its 68th season, it did so as an all–year operation, providing winter football for 600+ players, spring/early summer 5-a-side football for social players and acting as a base for national league summer football. It continued to make history — on February 6, 2015, it staged the first game of beach football by women played to FIFA rules and pitch standards in New Zealand, at the Karapiro Sandcourts. In March 2015, construction began of the club’s $200,000 extension to its changing rooms, providing six more sets of showers/ changing rooms for local and visiting players. On 25 May 2015, the club staged its first ever international match when Fiji and Hungary came to Cambridge for an U–20 international as preparation for the FIFA U–20 World Cup tournament. In July 2015, our club was awarded the Quality Club Mark by New Zealand Football, becoming only the fourth club in our region to achieve the 1 Star status, and becoming

one of fewer than 30 clubs throughout the country to earn the QCM. In 2016, the club was acknowledged with a Community Services award from Corrections NZ for its work over three years, helping to provide work opportunities for those sentenced by courts to perform work in the community.   Our players Probably the club's best known past player is New Zealand international striker Chris Wood who joined English Championship club Leeds United for $4.6 million from Leicester City in July 2015. Wood made his senior debut at Cambridge as a 14–year–old, having previously played for our juniors. Another former New Zealand international is Maria Anderton, who played for the Football Ferns in 1987, and captained the Cambridge women’s A team for 12 seasons until her retirement as a player in 2014. Cambridge juniors to earn international honours include Tayla Christensen and Katie Hoye (Football Ferns), Jamie Woodlock (NZ U–17s and Papua New Guinea national squad), and Che Bunce (All Whites).   Life Members Elected life members: Vic Butler, W.J.Sugden, Bert van Doorne, Eric Sugden, John Kerkhof, Alan Busst, Harry Bekkers, Hans Rakely, Rod Larnach, Kerry Dauphin, Bill Brown, Robert Bradley, Peter Martens.
