‘We look forward to soon celebrating the official opening of the (changing room) extensions ...’ Josh Easby, the secretary of Cambridge Football Club, looks forward to an opening ... IT’S THE second week of May and our club is hosting only its second WaiBOP Premiership fixture of the season. The reason we’ve been on the road for most of the season so far is that our club asked WaiBOP Football to minimise the number of games at John Kerkhof Park until our new extensions to our changing rooms were complete. And now we’re almost there — the roof has gone up, the walls are appearing and the internal fittings were about to start installation as this went to the printer. It’s been a long haul. Various plans for new

changing rooms have been considered over many years. The tough part was finding the money. Finally, after raising about $30,000 over three years, we secured a grant of almost $50,000 from the Lotteries Commission and $15,000 from Transpower. More fundraising, and a loan from Westpac at beneficial rates, has enabled the project to go ahead. The extensions will give the club six more changing rooms, all with showers and toilets, to go with the two we’ll retain in the main building. As the number of our senior teams has doubled in five years, the extensions are more than welcome — especially as the growth of our youth teams and three women’s teams has put more pressure on facilities on Sundays. We’re grateful to all those teams — especially those from visiting clubs — who have been patient while we found the best way to improve our facilities. And we look forward to soon celebrating the official opening of the extensions. * Sponsors can gain naming rights to any of the six changing rooms — for details, contact me at cambridgesoccer@gmail.com.

BEHIND THE TEAM

‘Football is all about passion ...’ — goalkeeper coach Kim Brierley

Profiling our goalkeeper coach STAND ANYWHERE near a Cambridge dugout and chances are you’ll hear one voice above all others. Goalkeeper coach Kim Brierley can’t suppress his involvement in the game — any game — and makes no apologies. “Football is all about passion,” he says. It’s a philosophy the English import takes into his coaching programmes, designed to help develop promising young goalkeepers. Brierley joined Cambridge at the start of 2014, relocating his Just 4 Keepers goalkeeping academy to John Kerkhof Park and taking a coaching role with our club’s top teams. Just 4 Keepers is an international chain of academies that specialises in the art of goalkeeping, and the group has a formidable record of producing ‘keepers who have gone onto professional careers. In New Zealand, Brierley has coached some of the country’s most promising women ‘keepers, having spent three seasons with the WaiBOP side in the ASB Women’s League. His work with teenager Emily Hanrahan saw her go to last year’s FIFA U–17 World Cup in Costa Rica with the New Zealand team. Brierley is putting together a coaching programme for goalkeepers of all ages for the RED: The matchday magazine of Cambridge FC

rest of 2015, and there’s still time to register. The registration fee is $50 and all participants receive a pair of J4K brand goalkeeping gloves. Once registered, each session is priced to encourage young ‘keepers: * Under 10s — $15 per session. * Ages 11–14 — $20 per session. * Ages 15+ — $25 per session. Sessions cover all aspects of goalkeeping, from positional play to shot–stopping. To find out more or to register, contact Kim on 021 02351323 (mobile) or email info@ just4keepers.co.nz.

Quiz Night CAMBRIDGE FC’s biggest annual Quiz Night is scheduled for Saturday June 13. Remember to put the date in your diary and start planning your quiz team’s entry. If you can help provide prizes for us to use in raffles and auctons, please get in touch with event organiser Jim Thomassen on 027 6811264 (mob) or email him at thomassen@ xtra.co.nz.

Great weekend for club SUPPORTERS of Cambridge Football Club are celebrating a memorable weekend with nine of their 11 senior men’s and women’s teams recording victories. Last weekend, the club’s men’s first team moved to the top of the WaiBOP Premiership with an impressive 4–1 win against Melville United at Hamilton’s Gower Park. Cambridge’s second team won 2–1 at Whakatane Town’s Rex Morpeth Park to remain unbeaten after five rounds of the WaiBOP Championship. Cambridge are second on the championship table and have a bye this weekend. The Cambridge A team beat Melville United 4–1 at John Kerkhof Park, thanks to a hat-trick from striker Gavin Clark, a recent signing from Waikato Unicol.

Cambridge’s other goal was scored by Florian Rigagneau. Cambridge’s women’s first team kept their 100% record after three rounds with a 3–2 win against reigning Waikato champions Claudelands Rovers. After trailing 2-0 in the opening 20 minutes, Cambridge fought back with goals from Rachel Westend (2) and Paige Pretswell. The side hosts Melville United at John Kerkhof Park this Sunday (kick off 11am). The Cambridge Red side remain unbeaten in division B after a 5-0 win at Te Awamutu. In the Print House Waikato Cup first round, four Cambridge men’s teams progressed to the second round. Cambridge B1 team beat Te Aroha Cobras 7-1, the B2 side beat Melville D 4-3, the C

CLUB NEWS / www.cambridgesoccer.co.nz team beat Claudelands Rovers 7-4 and the D1 side overcame Putaruru Rangers 4-3. The only Cambridge men’s team to lose were the D2 side who went out of the cup after a penalty shoot out to Waihi when the teams were tied 2-2 after extra time. The club’s Under 17 boys drew 0-0 at home against Tauranga City United in the federation youth league. Meanwhile, more than 400 youngsters also started their season with the opening day of junior football. The Cambridge club, already the largest for juniors in the Waikato, has experienced more growth with the number of teams for 8-13 year olds increasing from 20 to 28 this season. This includes four girls-only teams, the first year that WaiBOP Football has run junior competitions for girls-only sides.

CAMBRIDGE players and supporters can download a mobile application that tells them which teams are playing when and where. And for many teams, it will show you squad lists and who has scored in each game. The app is called Fox Sports Pulse and it's been developed by the company that provides the fixture scheduling software used by WaiBOP Football. You can download the app to a smart phone or a tablet. Then click on 'football' and search for WaiBOP. You should find a menu of different WaiBOP competitions, enabling you to access fixture lists and lots more. The app is available free from the iTunes store.

CELEBRATING OUR ACHIEVEMENTS

‘ ... a golden season for the Cambridge Football Club’ — Cambridge Edition

Our club’s most successful year CAMBRIDGE Football Club swept a number of prestigious awards in 2014 — a period called the club’s “golden season” by the Cambridge Edition. The club was named WaiBOP Football’s Club of the Year for 2014, chosen from the region’s 106 affiliated clubs. The honour reflected the work by Cambridge’s army of volunteers to not only provide football for its own members but also to stage regional and national events for the sport. These include hosting WaiBOP–run coaching courses and game days for youngsters, as well as being the home ground for ASB Premiership side WaiBOP United. Cambridge is one of six bases for national league football (the others are Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin). Cambridge was named the 2014 Waipa District Sports Club of the Year and was a finalist in the Waikato Sports Club of the Year. Its chairman, Greg Zeuren, was named Administrator of the Year for both Waipa District and for the Waikato, for his leadership of the club’s committee. The club was also awarded the Supreme

RED: The matchday magazine of Cambridge FC

Award (pictured) for the Waipa District’s Trustpower Community Awards, becoming only the second sports club to take the trophy which recognises services to the local community. Our club was a finalist at the national Trustpower Community Awards held in Wellington in late March. Cambridge also won two WaiBOP Football Best Practice awards. Success in 2014 also came on the pitch. Our senior men’s first team won the Federation Challenge Shield last year and went into 2015 as the holder. The team were runners–up in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Federation Division 1. Our women’s first team won the Waikato Women’s Cup, beating the previously unbeaten Claudelands Rovers 2–1 in the final. Our Under 15 boys’ youth team won the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Nike Cup tournament, a feat repeated this year. The side also won the WaiBOP Federation U–15 Youth League.

In 2012, Cambridge FC announced that John Kerkhof Park would also become the home base for Cambridge Baseball Club.  2013: Cambridge FC and the neighbouring Cambridge Harriers and Athletics Club began a partnership, enabling the football club to play some games at the adjacent athletics track while it developed John Kerkhof Park. In 2013, the club won the Soccer Shop Waikato Plate and hosted premium events such as the Soccer Shop Waikato Cup Final, the Waikato v Bay of Plenty All Stars game, and the WaiBOP Women's All Stars v WaiBOP National League side. In late 2013, the club was appointed as the home ground for five ASB Premiership matches for new franchise WaiBOP United. This meant Cambridge became one of six bases for national league football in New Zealand (the others are Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin).

The appointment led to the club becoming an all-year operation, with investment in better facilities including upgraded playing surfaces, new changing rooms (scheduled for mid–2014) and a new irrigation system.  2014: The club's first team finished runners–up in the 2014 WaiBOP Federation Division 1, while the U-15 team won the Federation Youth League. Our women won the Waikato Women's Cup. The Cambidge Lacrosse Club moved its playing base to John Kerkhof Park in 2014. In 2014, the club won a series of high profile awards for its work in football and in the wider community. WaiBOP Football named the club its 2014 Club of the Year for its successful efforts to host ASP Premiership fixtures and other premium matches. Cambridge also won two WaiBOP Best Practice awards in 2014 (for building partnerships with sponsors, and for the participation of women at our club). The club was named Waipa District’s 2014 Supreme winner for the Truspower Community Awards, becoming only the second sports club to take this award. This

It continued to make history — on February 6, 2015, it staged the first game of beach football by women played to FIFA rules and pitch standards in New Zealand, at the Karapiro Sandcourts. In March 2015, construction began of the club’s $200,000 extension to its changing rooms, providing six more sets of showers/
