‘regardless of who wins, (the tournament’s) success will depend on the legacy it creates ...’ Josh Easby, the secretary of Cambridge Football Club, looks forward to an opening ... WE’RE A week away from seeing the world’s second biggest football event take place on our doorstep. The FIFA U–20 World Cup launches next Saturday (May 30) with an opening ceremony, followed by New Zealand’s first group game against Ukraine. In the Waikato, we’ll get the chance to watch eight matches at the Waikato Stadium in Hamilton, and those of us who are really keen can easily get to Auckland and New Plymouth for more games. The track record of the tournament is that it helps launch the young players who

are ready to become the next generation of big stars. Examples are Argentinians Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero, France’s Thierry Henry and Paul Pogba, Brazil’s Ronaldinho, Holland’s Arjen Robben, Spain’s Andres Iniesta, Chile’s Alexis Sanchez, and Columbia’s James Rodriguez. Many Cambridge club members have bought tickets for every game in Hamilton, and I’m sure our club will be visible (and noisy if cheerleader Kim Brierley has anything to do with it). Some of our members are working as volunteers at the tournament, and we wish them well. The tournament finishes on June 20 and regardless of who wins, and how well New Zealand fares, its success will depend on the legacy it creates. Local organisers and the region’s councils have talked much of the importance that football is stronger after the event, because of the tournament, than before. Certainly, our club has seen the Waikato– based organising staff, Seamus Marten and James Bannatyne, working hard to ensure the tournament is successful in the Waikato. We wish them well for the month ahead.

PRINT HOUSE WAIKATO CUP
Five teams remain in cup CAMBRIDGE teams have their best chance in many years to make progress in this year’s Print House Waikato Cup, with five sides drawn in this weekend’s second round. Going into the last 32 round on Saturday, our club’s five remaining entries have all managed to avoid each other in the draw. The draw: 12.30pm: Cambridge C v Waikato Unicol A (John Kerkhof Park). 1.30pm: West Hamilton C v Cambridge B1 (away). 1.30pm: Cambridge D1 v Hamilton North Debacles D (John Kerkhof Park). 1.30pm: Claudelands Rovers C2 v Cambridge B2 (away) 2.30pm: Waikato Unicol C v Cambridge A (away).
The 16 winners from this round play in the third round draw on June 27, followed by quarter finals on July 11 and semi-finals on August 1. The cup and plate finals will be staged on Saturday August 22. Meanwhile, the only Cambridge side knocked out of the cup so far — the D2 team who lost to Waihi after a penalty shoot out — have a first round bye in the Print House Waikato Plate. Two years ago, Cambridge reached the final of both competitions with our Division A team losing to Wanderers while our Division C side won the plate 3–2 against Waihi.
Sides ride high on league tables CAMBRIDGE teams are flying high in their leagues after a weekend of top results. The men’s first team sits atop the WaiBOP Premiership with a lead of three points (and with a game in hand) over second–placed Papamoa, after returning from Rotorua United with a 2-0 victory. The club’s second side has moved into clear second spot on the WaiBOP Championship ladder with a 1-0 win at the home of table leaders Claudelands Rovers. In the men’s Waikato A division, the club secured a 2-0 win at Te Kuiti, cementing a mid-table position with an improving record. Meanwhile, the women’s first team drew 1–1 at Tokoroa in the Waikato A division and our Cambridge Red side won 4-0 to remain in contention for the Waikato B division title. In Rotorua, Cambridge went ahead through a well-taken Kieran Hill goal in the 48th minute. RED: The matchday magazine of Cambridge FC
Just after the hour, skipper Patrick Woodlock made sure of the points with a headed goal. The Carters Cambridge Player of the Day was Jason Szabo. Josh Clark, who has returned home from a spell playing college football in Oklahoma, scored the winner against Claudelands Rovers in the WaiBOP Championship clash. In the women’s Waikato A league, Cambridge took the lead at Tokoroa when Jo Chambers helped scramble home a Paige Pretswell corner in the 76th minute. However Cambridge then conceded from a corner in the 83rd minute to cough up a draw. The result means Cambridge has 10 points from a possible 15 and remains in touch with the league leaders, Wanderers, who visit John Kerkhof Park this Sunday.

Youngsters excel at tournament CAMBRIDGE JUNIOR teams had an outstanding day at the Hukunui Rototuna FC tournament in Hamilton. The tournament was staged for 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th grade teams from throughout the Waikato. • A local derby in the 8th grade cup final saw our Clarets win against our Avengers. • Our Comets side won the Plate final in the 10th grade section. • Our 10th grade Hatrix won the cup final in their division. • Our 11th grade Tornadoes won their grade’s cup final. CAMBRIDGE players and supporters can download a mobile application that tells them which teams are playing when and where. And for many teams, it will show you squad lists and who has scored in each game. The app is called Fox Sports Pulse and it's been developed by the company that provides the fixture scheduling software used by WaiBOP Football. You can download the app to a smart phone or a tablet. Then click on 'football' and search for WaiBOP. You should find a menu of different WaiBOP competitions, enabling you to access fixture lists and lots more. The app is available free from the iTunes store.

Adrian Clark (defender) Experienced and reads the game well, played for top Wellington clubs Lower Hutt and Stop Out before joining Cambridge. Henry Stephen (defender) Talented left–sided wide player with pace and an excellent cross, Stephen joins the Cambridge club for the 2015 season. Kieran Hill (defender) A first team regular at Ngaruawahia United until his transfer to John Kerkhof Park last year, he brings considerable Northern League experience to Cambridge. Nathan Claridge (defender or midfield) Made his Northern League debut at 16. Won the club’s Young Player of the Year Award in 2011 when he captained the club’s U19s at the national youth championships.

Adam Brady (forward) Joins the club as a new arrival from the United Kingdom, where he played for Melbourne Inn in the Plymouth and West Devon Combination Football League.
Jason Szabo (forward or midfield) Experienced attacking midfielder who has emigrated from the UK. Gets amongst the goals and was 2013 top scorer and ‘Player of the Year’ for our Waikato A team.
Kyle Wisnewski (winger) This 17-year-old member of the WaiBOP futsal team has transferred to Cambridge from Melville United for the 2015 season.
Josh Clark (defender or midfield) Made his Northern League debut at 15 and expected to return to Cambridge in mid– 2015 after playing for Murray State College, in Oklahoma, United States. Ben Latham (defender or midfield) Played Northern League for Ngaruawahia United, joining them in 2011 as a 20–year– old before transferring to Cambridge in 2015. Played ASB Premiership with WaiBOP United in 2013–14 season. Glen Carmichael (defender or midfield) Joined Cambridge for the 2013 season after playing for Matamata Swifts in Northern League Divisions 1 and 2. Selected for last season’s Waikato All Stars team. Robbie Greenhalgh (midfield/player coach) Signed for Cambridge in 2013 after an illustrious career as skipper of Northern League winners Bay Olympic, and a member of the Waikato FC national league squad. Previously at Central United and a former NZ U–17 international. Voted the Supporters’ Player of the Year for WaiBOP United after the 2014–15 ASB Premiership season. Tom Woutersen (forward) Learned his football with Cambridge, helping win the U–19 Satellite Youth Tournament in Napier, before spending three seasons with Palmerston North Marist. Returned to Cambridge for 2013. Won the team’s Golden Boot in 2013.

Sam Garmonsway (defender or winger) Former Cambridge High School player who joined the club in 2014 after playing for Universities AFC while studying at Canterbury University. Richard Armstrong (defender) Joined Cambridge for the start of the 2014 season from Ngaruawahia United where he was a regular in the Northern League Reserves Division. Jordan Sylvester (defender or winger) Joined Cambridge for the 2014 season from Universities AFC, Christchurch. Brett Clark (forward) Veteran player with the club and former first team player who has taken the reins in 2015, leading a newly–formed coaching group. Mike Woodlock (assistant coach) Coached Cambridge between 2008 and 2010 in Northern League Division 2 and brings vast experience to the 2015 coaching team. Kim Brierley (goalkeeper coach) Runs the Just4Keepers goalkeeping academy, coaches WaiBOP Federation goalkeepers and has been the WaiBOP women’s ASB League goalkeeper coach for the past two seasons. Katikati are newcomers to the WaiBOP Premiership, having won promotion last season when taking the Federation 2 title. With the Stollery brothers, Dane and Troy, leading the goalscoring charge, Katikati looked likely to go unbeaten through 2014 with 14 consecutive wins. Despite losing their last two games, Katikati’s performance was enough to ensure promotion. The last time Cambridge met Katikati was on July 28, 2012, when a long–range goal by Jamie Coomber earned a 1–1 draw at Moore Park and clinched our own promotion to the top tier of federation football. The last time Katikati played our first team at John Kerkhof Park was on May 26, 2012, when Cambridge won their Federation 2 fixture 1–0 with a goal from Jack Taylor.

‘ ... a golden season for the Cambridge Football Club’ — Cambridge Edition
Our club’s most successful year CAMBRIDGE Football Club swept a number of prestigious awards in 2014 — a period called the club’s “golden season” by the Cambridge Edition. The club was named WaiBOP Football’s Club of the Year for 2014, chosen from the region’s 106 affiliated clubs. The honour reflected the work by Cambridge’s army of volunteers to not only provide football for its own members but also to stage regional and national events for the sport. These include hosting WaiBOP–run coaching courses and game days for youngsters, as well as being the home ground for ASB Premiership side WaiBOP United. Cambridge is one of six bases for national league football (the others are Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin). Cambridge was named the 2014 Waipa District Sports Club of the Year and was a finalist in the Waikato Sports Club of the Year. Its chairman, Greg Zeuren, was named Administrator of the Year for both Waipa District and for the Waikato, for his leadership of the club’s committee. The club was also awarded the Supreme

Award (pictured) for the Waipa District’s Trustpower Community Awards, becoming only the second sports club to take the trophy which recognises services to the local community. Our club was a finalist at the national Trustpower Community Awards held in Wellington in late March. Cambridge also won two WaiBOP Football Best Practice awards. Success in 2014 also came on the pitch. Our senior men’s first team won the Federation Challenge Shield last year and went into 2015 as the holder. The team were runners–up in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Federation Division 1. Our women’s first team won the Waikato Women’s Cup, beating the previously unbeaten Claudelands Rovers 2–1 in the final. Our Under 15 boys’ youth team won the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Nike Cup tournament, a feat repeated this year. The side also won the WaiBOP Federation U–15 Youth League.

In 2012, Cambridge FC announced that John Kerkhof Park would also become the home base for Cambridge Baseball Club. 2013: Cambridge FC and the neighbouring Cambridge Harriers and Athletics Club began a partnership, enabling the football club to play some games at the adjacent athletics track while it developed John Kerkhof Park. In 2013, the club won the Soccer Shop Waikato Plate and hosted premium events such as the Soccer Shop Waikato Cup Final, the Waikato v Bay of Plenty All Stars game, and the WaiBOP Women's All Stars v WaiBOP National League side. In late 2013, the club was appointed as the home ground for five ASB Premiership matches for new franchise WaiBOP United. This meant Cambridge became one of six bases for national league football in New Zealand (the others are Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin).

The appointment led to the club becoming an all-year operation, with investment in better facilities including upgraded playing surfaces, new changing rooms (scheduled for mid–2014) and a new irrigation system. 2014: The club's first team finished runners–up in the 2014 WaiBOP Federation Division 1, while the U-15 team won the Federation Youth League. Our women won the Waikato Women's Cup. The Cambidge Lacrosse Club moved its playing base to John Kerkhof Park in 2014. In 2014, the club won a series of high profile awards for its work in football and in the wider community. WaiBOP Football named the club its 2014 Club of the Year for its successful efforts to host ASP Premiership fixtures and other premium matches. Cambridge also won two WaiBOP Best Practice awards in 2014 (for building partnerships with sponsors, and for the participation of women at our club). The club was named Waipa District’s 2014 Supreme winner for the Truspower Community Awards, becoming only the second sports club to take this award. This

also led to the club’s nomination for the national Trustpower Community Awards to be held in Wellington in March 2015. Cambridge completed its hat-trick of major awards in 2014, being named Waipa District’s Sports Club of the Year. We were finalists in the Waikato Sports Club of the Year while chairman Greg Zeuren was named Sports Administrator of the Year for both Waipa and the Waikato in 2014. 2015: As the club entered its 68th season, it did so as an all–year operation, providing winter football for 600+ players, spring/early summer 5-a-side football for social players and acting as a base for national league summer football. It continued to make history — on February 6, 2015, it staged the first game of beach football by women played to FIFA rules and pitch standards in New Zealand, at the Karapiro Sandcourts. In March 2015, construction began of the club’s $200,000 extension to its changing rooms, providing six more sets of showers/
changing rooms for local and visiting players. Our players Probably the club's best known past player is New Zealand international striker Chris Wood who joined English Championship club Leicester City in January 2012 from West Bromwich Albion. Wood made his senior debut at Cambridge as a 14–year–old, having previously played for our juniors. Another former New Zealand international is Maria Anderton, who played for the Football Ferns in 1987, and captained the Cambridge women’s A team for 12 seasons until her retirement as a player in 2014.
