‘Let’s get behind the referees’ efforts and show them our respect and support ...’ Josh Easby, the secretary of Cambridge Football Club, explains why the refs need our help ... THIS YEAR, WaiBOP Football introduced new regulations which effectively force clubs to provide Club–Based Referees (CBRs) for all competition games. To many, it seemed a radical move with teams risking the loss of points if they couldn’t provide a CBR for games — home or away — when a WaiBOP referee could not be provided. But for WaiBOP the rule change seemed to be the best way to provide some help for the region’s referees who are struggling to recruit and keep up their numbers, particular in the Waikato.

My understanding is that the Waikato is still short by at least 25 qualified referees. The shortage is not just a matter of being unable to keep up with the growth of the game. Sadly, many referees drop out of the game, tired of the sniping from the sidelines and the lack of respect from some players and coaches. Our club has got behind the CBR initiative with 22 men and women members qualifying this year to join the ranks of those entitled to wear the yellow CBR shirt. We already had a few CBRs willing to help when needed but this year’s programme has boosted the numbers. Interestingly, a few of the new CBRs have found refereeing has given them a fresh perspective on what the ref has to face on the pitch. We often hear coaches say at after match speeches that without the ref, we wouldn’t have a game. The current shortage of referees has emphasised that point and it’s up to all of us — the players, the coaches and the supporters on the sideline — to get behind the referees’ efforts to boost their numbers. Let’s show them the respect and support they deserve.

CAMBRIDGE INCREASE LEAD IN WAIBOP PREMIERSHIP
Cambridge equalise in the Premiership through a Robbie Greenhalgh penalty.
Derby day goal feast Cambridge football fans were treated to a feast of goals in a double header derby day at John Kerkhof Park last Saturday. Playing WaiBOP Premiership and WaiBOP Championship matches against local rivals Matamata Swifts, Cambridge took both results in convincing fashion. In the main game, Matamata took an early lead when striker Andrew Clothier hit a sweet strike from outside the box. Cambridge, looking out of sorts after a two week break, found an equaliser just before half-time when Robbie Greenhalgh was dragged down and he scored from the penalty spot. In the second half, Cambridge applied the pressure and Carters Cambridge Player of the Day Shaun Kipara found the net in the 70th minute, only to have it ruled offside. Three minutes later, Cambridge were awarded a second penalty but Greenhalgh’s spot kick was well saved. Cambridge eventually took a deserved lead in the 78th minute when Glen Carmichael latched onto a neat Jason Szabo pass to smash it home. Szabo then finished the game with a last-minute effort accurately drilled home from the edge of the box. RED: The matchday magazine of Cambridge FC
The win increased Cambridge’s lead in the Premiership to eight points, though other teams have games in hand. In the early game, two goals in each half ensured Cambridge took the points in the WaiBOP Championship derby. Going into the match, Cambridge were keen to shake any after effects from last weekend’s first loss of the season, at Te Puke, and looked for a strong start. It paid off when Sam Garmonsway put Cambridge ahead in the 19th minute. Leading goalscorer Adam Brady added a second goal after 29 minutes, which saw the teams reach halftime with a 2-0 scoreline. Two minutes after the restart, Brady added his second, putting the result out of touch for a young and hardworking Matamata side. Jordan Silvester added his team’s fourth on 73 minutes. The Cambridge Player of the Day was Henry Stephen who played well in a wide role before moving into a central role. The win keeps Cambridge in second place on the table.

Grassroots Trust helps juniors ď Ž OUR JUNIOR players have received a helping hand through a donation from the Grassroots Trust. The popularity of football has seen our junior ranks swell to more than 400 this year, putting pressure on our efforts to keep all the youngsters kitted up for action. But a $3,000 grant from Grassroots will enable the club to purchase about 80 club shirts that will be used to replace ageing kit.
8
The club is progressively replacing kit and a grant such as this is most helpful in making this possible. The grant comes from the proceeds of gaming machines located at the Five Stags, Leamington. In 2013, Grassroots Trust awarded our club a grant of $2,898 to buy 130 balls and two sets of goal nets.

CELEBRATING OUR ACHIEVEMENTS
‘ ... a golden season for the Cambridge Football Club’ — Cambridge Edition
Our club’s most successful year CAMBRIDGE Football Club swept a number of prestigious awards in 2014 — a period called the club’s “golden season” by the Cambridge Edition. The club was named WaiBOP Football’s Club of the Year for 2014, chosen from the region’s 106 affiliated clubs. The honour reflected the work by Cambridge’s army of volunteers to not only provide football for its own members but also to stage regional and national events for the sport. These include hosting WaiBOP–run coaching courses and game days for youngsters, as well as being the home ground for ASB Premiership side WaiBOP United. Cambridge is one of six bases for national league football (the others are Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin). Cambridge was named the 2014 Waipa District Sports Club of the Year and was a finalist in the Waikato Sports Club of the Year. Its chairman, Greg Zeuren, was named Administrator of the Year for both Waipa District and for the Waikato, for his leadership of the club’s committee. The club was also awarded the Supreme
RED: The matchday magazine of Cambridge FC
Award (pictured) for the Waipa District’s Trustpower Community Awards, becoming only the second sports club to take the trophy which recognises services to the local community. Our club was a finalist at the national Trustpower Community Awards held in Wellington in late March. Cambridge also won two WaiBOP Football Best Practice awards. Success in 2014 also came on the pitch. Our senior men’s first team won the Federation Challenge Shield last year and went into 2015 as the holder. The team were runners–up in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Federation Division 1. Our women’s first team won the Waikato Women’s Cup, beating the previously unbeaten Claudelands Rovers 2–1 in the final. Our Under 15 boys’ youth team won the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Nike Cup tournament, a feat repeated this year. The side also won the WaiBOP Federation U–15 Youth League.

In 2012, Cambridge FC announced that John Kerkhof Park would also become the home base for Cambridge Baseball Club. 2013: Cambridge FC and the neighbouring Cambridge Harriers and Athletics Club began a partnership, enabling the football club to play some games at the adjacent athletics track while it developed John Kerkhof Park. In 2013, the club won the Soccer Shop Waikato Plate and hosted premium events such as the Soccer Shop Waikato Cup Final, the Waikato v Bay of Plenty All Stars game, and the WaiBOP Women's All Stars v WaiBOP National League side. In late 2013, the club was appointed as the home ground for five ASB Premiership matches for new franchise WaiBOP United. This meant Cambridge became one of six bases for national league football in New Zealand (the others are Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin).

The appointment led to the club becoming an all-year operation, with investment in better facilities including upgraded playing surfaces, new changing rooms (scheduled for mid–2014) and a new irrigation system. 2014: The club's first team finished runners–up in the 2014 WaiBOP Federation Division 1, while the U-15 team won the Federation Youth League. Our women won the Waikato Women's Cup. The Cambidge Lacrosse Club moved its playing base to John Kerkhof Park in 2014. In 2014, the club won a series of high profile awards for its work in football and in the wider community. WaiBOP Football named the club its 2014 Club of the Year for its successful efforts to host ASP Premiership fixtures and other premium matches. Cambridge also won two WaiBOP Best Practice awards in 2014 (for building partnerships with sponsors, and for the participation of women at our club). Cambridge completed its hat-trick of major awards in 2014, being named Waipa District’s Sports Club of the Year. It continued to make history — on February 6, 2015, it staged the first game of beach football by women played to FIFA rules and pitch standards in New Zealand, at the Karapiro Sandcourts. In March 2015, construction began of the club’s $200,000 extension to its changing rooms, providing six more sets of showers/ changing rooms for local and visiting players.

CLUB NEWS
Changing rooms nearly ready OUR LONG–AWAITED extensions to the changing rooms at John Kerkhof Park are almost ready. Three weekends of working bees have seen concrete pads laid around the outside of the $200,000 building, while new drains have been laid and interior walls and showers painted. Builder Ben Latham and plumber Steve Barrot have been working for several months on the extensions that will lead to six new changing rooms and the addition of storage space for equipment. Project manager Geoff Wheeler has been co–ordinating volunteer work on the site, while Brett Halliday and his digger have laid new drains and a soak pit, helping resolve a long–standing drainage issue in the corner of the car park.
The new changing rooms have resulted from five years of fundraising and they present an opportunity for sponsors looking for ways to promote their businesses. The club is offering naming rights to each of the six changing rooms, providing sponsors with exposure to thousands of players each year. The naming rights are available for periods of three to six years. Anyone interested in taking up this opportunity can contact Geoff Wheeler (geoff@jetcreative.co.nz) or club secretary Josh Easby (cambridgesoccer@gmail.com). The club will host an official opening of the new building after it is completed.
