‘... the spirit shown in the Chatham Cup tie gave us all something to cherish ... ’ Josh Easby, the secretary of Cambridge Football Club, reflects on two losses ...  LEGENDARY American football coach Vince Lombardi used to say: “Winning isn’t everything — it’s the only thing.” While our competitive nature, and desire to succeed at top level as a club, might support that notion, we’re occasionally reminded that there’s another important element to consider — how we go about losing. Queen’s Birthday Weekend was a case in point. On Saturday, our men’s first team travelled to Ngongotaha for a top–of–the– table clash that will play a significant part in deciding this year’s WaiBOP Premiership. We lost 2–0.

Two days later, the boys backed up for a Chatham Cup tie against Central United, a star–studded side that plays three divisions higher than Cambridge. We were expected by many to be easy meat, especially coming off the back of the disappointing result at Ngongotaha. Instead, Cambridge lifted themselves and but for an eight–minute spell in which we conceded three goals, they matched the Aucklanders for workrate, tenacity and enterprise. Splendid goals from Glen Carmichael and Callum MacLeod lifted the spirits of the team and their supporters, helping erase the pain of the premiership loss. By Monday night, despite two losses, Cambridge’s players, coaches and supporters were heading home with smiles on their faces. While the records will show losses, the quality of the performance, and the spirit shown in the Chatham Cup tie, gave all of us something to cherish. And if the team can continue in that vein, they’ll find another gear for the rest of the season.

Much merit in cup defeat  WHILE CAMBRIDGE have been knocked out from football’s Chatham Cup, their performance against five–time winners Central United earned them much respect. Cambridge were expected by many to struggle against the Auckland club who play three divisions higher and are the winter feeder club to national champions Auckland City FC. Instead, Cambridge matched their opponents for much of the game before bowing out of football’s oldest club competition with a respectable 4–2 loss. Cambridge showed no signs of nerves when the game started at Central’s Kiwitea Street ground – recently rated in a national poll as the 7th best sports ground in New Zealand. Queen’s Birthday Monday sunshine and cup football ensured strong support for both clubs with many Cambridge supporters travelling north. The visitors took a shock lead in the 16th minute when Glen Carmichael beat two

defenders and then floated a perfectlyplaced shot from 25 metres over the head of goalkeeper Danyon Drake. Cambridge’s lead lasted only two minutes before Argentinian striker Emiliano Tade — the only player to have played in five consecutive FIFA World Club Cup tournaments for Auckland City — found the equaliser. Central then showed their class, scoring twice more in the 20th and 24th minutes through Frenchman Vincent Pineau and Tade again. Trailing 3-1, Cambridge could have folded but instead the side regrouped and for the remaining hour of the cup tie, held their own. Youngsters Callum MacLeod, Logan Wisnewski and Quest Tipping – all playing their first season of senior football – showed

confidence as they took on players with national league and international experience. At the back, veteran Jason Chewins, Kieran Hill and American college players Matt Wheeler and Josh Clark defended tirelessly, repelling Central attacks. But in the 78th minute, striker Nicholas Zambrano found a way through the Cambridge defence to make it 4-1. Two minutes later, Chewins expertly played a ball wide to Cambridge’s leading goalscorer this season, MacLeod, and he kept calm to shoot past Drake from an acute angle. After the match, Central coach José Figueira praised the Cambridge performance, acknowledging that Carmichael’s opening goal was outstanding. The goal helped earn Carmichael the Carters Cambridge Player of the Day. Cambridge coach Brett Clark said while his team lost, sometimes they could accept results as “a good loss” and he was proud of the way the players had competed right to the final whistle.

The cup tie capped a hectic weekend for Cambridge with the side travelling to Rotorua on Queen’s Birthday Saturday for a crucial WaiBOP Premiership clash against leaders Ngongotaha. Cambridge lost the match 2-0, ending a streak of eight successive wins and ensuring the WaiBOP Challenge Shield stays in the Bay of Plenty. Ngongotaha scored in the 13th and 40th minutes through Mitch Miller and Luke Barker, and remain unbeaten at the top of the competition table. For Cambridge to retain their regional title, they will need another long winning streak and for Ngongotaha to slip up against other teams. The Carters Cambridge Player of the Day was Josh Clark. Meanwhile, Cambridge’s second team registered another good win , beating Ngongotaha Reserves 2-0 to move into midtable on the WaiBOP Championship table. Teenagers Jack O’Leary and Levi Clark scored for Cambridge. In the Waikato Division A, Cambridge beat Melville United 2-1 with goals from Mauro Pereira and Richard Armstrong, playing his last game for Cambridge before heading overseas.

NICE TOUCH: At full–time, the Kiwitea Street scoreboard tips its hat to a brave Cambridge performance.

Matamata Swifts AFC formed in 1930 and like many clubs from rural New Zealand have enjoyed the highs and lows of competition. After 16 continuous seasons in the lower divisions of the Northern Regional League, Matamata were relegated to the Waikato competition at the start of 1999. The club then battled to rebuild its top– tier team, finally winning the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Federation 1 League title in 2009. That enabled the club to re-enter the Northern League where it played mainly in the second division, but with a brief spell in the first division during the 2010 ‘restructure’ season. The Swifts opted to drop from the Northern League in 2013 as part of a long–term plan to rebuild while playing in the WaiBOP Federation League.

In 2012, Cambridge FC announced that John Kerkhof Park would also become the home base for Cambridge Baseball Club.   2013: Cambridge FC and the neighbouring Cambridge Harriers and Athletics Club began a partnership, enabling the football club to play some games at the adjacent athletics track while it developed John Kerkhof Park. In 2013, the club won the Soccer Shop Waikato Plate and hosted premium events such as the Soccer Shop Waikato Cup Final, the Waikato v Bay of Plenty All Stars game, and the WaiBOP Women's All Stars v WaiBOP National League side. In late 2013, the club was appointed as the home ground for five ASB Premiership matches for new franchise WaiBOP United. This meant Cambridge became one of six bases for national league football in New Zealand (the others are Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin).

The appointment led to the club becoming an all-year operation, with investment in better facilities including upgraded playing surfaces, new changing rooms (scheduled for mid–2014) and a new irrigation system.   2014: The club's first team finished runners–up in the 2014 WaiBOP Federation Division 1, while the U-15 team won the Federation Youth League. Our women won the Waikato Women's Cup. The Cambidge Lacrosse Club moved its playing base to John Kerkhof Park in 2014. In 2014, the club won a series of high profile awards for its work in football and in the wider community. WaiBOP Football named the club its 2014 Club of the Year for its successful efforts to host ASP Premiership fixtures and other premium matches. Cambridge also won two WaiBOP Best Practice awards in 2014 (for building partnerships with sponsors, and for the participation of women at our club). The club was named Waipa District’s 2014 Supreme winner for the Truspower Community Awards, becoming only the second sports club to take this award. This

also led to the club’s nomination for the national Trustpower Community Awards to be held in Wellington in March 2015. Cambridge completed its hat-trick of major awards in 2014, being named Waipa District’s Sports Club of the Year. We were finalists in the Waikato Sports Club of the Year while chairman Greg Zeuren was named Sports Administrator of the Year for both Waipa and the Waikato in 2014.   2015: As the club entered its 68th season, it did so as an all–year operation, providing winter football for 600+ players, spring/early summer 5-a-side football for social players and acting as a base for national league summer football. It continued to make history — on February 6, 2015, it staged the first game of beach football by women played to FIFA rules and pitch standards in New Zealand, at the Karapiro Sandcourts. In March 2015, construction began of the club’s $200,000 extension to its changing rooms, providing six more sets of showers/ changing rooms for local and visiting players. On 25 May 2015, the club staged its first ever international match when Fiji and Hungary came to Cambridge for an U–20

international as preparation for the FIFA U–20 World Cup tournament. In July 2015, our club was awarded the Quality Club Mark by New Zealand Football, becoming only the fourth club in our region to achieve the 1 Star status, and becoming one of fewer than 30 clubs throughout the contry to earn the QCM.   Our players Probably the club's best known past player is New Zealand international striker Chris Wood who joined English Championship club Leeds United for $4.6 million from Leicester City in July 2015. Wood made his senior debut at Cambridge as a 14–year–old, having previously played for our juniors. Another former New Zealand international is Maria Anderton, who played for the Football Ferns in 1987, and captained the Cambridge women’s A team for 12 seasons until her retirement as a player in 2014.   Life Members Elected life members: Vic Butler, W.J.Sugden, Bert van Doorne, Eric Sugden, John Kerkhof, Alan Busst, Harry Bekkers, Hans Rakely, Rod Larnach, Kerry Dauphin, Bill Brown, Robert Bradley, Peter Martens.

CLUB NEWS

Programme cuts injury risk  CAMBRIDGE FC are getting behind a warm–up programme that has been proven to reduce the risk of injuries by 30%. It’s the FIFA 11+ Complete Warm-Up Programme for youth and senior players and Senior Men’s Club Captain Lee Turpett and U–13 youth coach Steve Thomas recently attended a NZ Football–WaiBOP Football workshop to learn how it works. The programme has direct performance benefits for footballers — making fitter, faster and more agile players as well as reducing the risk of all injuries by 30%. It is designed to be delivered by coaches, is easy to learn and implement into existing training sessions and completion of the course results in FIFA 11+ certification in as

little as two hours. The All Whites and Football Ferns have been using FIFA 11+ for some time and all the ASB Premiership teams undertook to use it last summer season. WaiBOP Football plans to encourage all 106 affiliated clubs and schools to adopt the programme, and is running workshops to team club representatives how to use it. So what is FIFA 11+? “The programme takes 15–20 minutes to do and is designed to replace a standard warm–up,” explains NZ Football’s doctor, Mark Fulcher. “If it is done twice a week, it reduces the risk of injury by 30% and the risk of severe injury by 50%. These are things like an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) injury in the knee.”
