‘Our success depends on finding new volunteers to help or replace those already doing their bit ...’ Josh Easby, the secretary of Cambridge Football Club, looks at the role of our volunteers ...  OUR CLUB has become well–known for the achievements of its volunteers — the people who pitch in to keep us running (and growing) all year. The extent to which we rely on the goodwill of our volunteers is difficult to see. So much of their work is hidden from view. It happens without most of our members being aware until for some reason it doesn’t get done. A recent example has been the linemarking of senior and junior pitches which has escalated into a task that now takes an estimated 22 hours a week. But how many hours of volunteer labour

do you think it takes to operate our club? Our club is currently in the final stages of seeking accreditation for the first level of NZ Football’s Quality Club Mark scheme. As part of the assessment, we were required to provide an estimate of the total hours contributed by volunteers — everyone from coaches and team managers to those who work behind the scenes. The estimated total was more than 29,000 hours a year, split between the 100+ people who regularly give up their time for no monetary reward. That’s the equivalent of having 14 full-time employees. As a club, we try to regularly thank our volunteers and recognise the work they do. We also ask the 500+ members who do not currently volunteer to consider what contribution they could make, whether it’s a few hours here and there or undertaking some regular work that makes use of their skills. The success of our club depends on finding a steady stream of new volunteers to help or replace those who are already doing their bit. It’s never too late to put up your hand to help.

Rearguard action plays big part in title chase

Scoreboard operator Elliot Beeney was kept busy by our first team against Tauranga City United.

WHILE SUPPORTERS have been enjoying this season’s free–scoring by our WaiBOP Premiership team, don’t overlook the role played by the meanest defence in the competition. After 13 rounds of competition, the Cambridge rearguard has conceded a miserly seven goals. In fact, at the halfway stage of the winter season, Cambridge teams held the best defensive records in the WaiBOP Premiership, Championship and Waikao A divisions, indicating that solid defence is a hallmark of the club’s top level teams. While the defenders have been doing their job, Cambridge notched their biggest win in many years with an 8-0 victory over Tauranga City United at John Kerkhof Park. The result had long-time supporters struggling to recall when the club last registered such an emphatic win at the top level of regional football for the Waikato and Bay of Plenty. But this team has been threatening all season to cut loose and they crushed United with a first-half display that saw six goals and a series of near-misses. Goals from striker Shaun Kipara, Robbie Greenhalgh (2), Tom Woutersen (3) and Glen RED: The matchday magazine of Cambridge FC

Carmichael saw Cambridge stay top of the table. The defence was solid against Tauranga with Adrian Clark and Carters Cambridge Player of the Day Matthew Wheeler always in control. Last Saturday, Cambridge travelled to Tauranga’s Wharepai Domain to take on Old Blues, the only side to beat the Reds this season. Old Blues took the Federation Challenge Shield from Cambridge in April, a loss that triggered the club’s long unbeaten streak since. Glen Carmichael opened the scoring with a 28th minute penalty after Ben Latham was dragged down. In the 58th minute, Henry Stephen also scored from the spot after Tom Woutersen was fouled in the box. But the goal of the game came in the 81st minute when substitute Elton Leri, a May signing from Hastings Hibernian, smashed home a shot from outside the box. For the second week in succession, the Carters Cambridge Player of the Day was Matthew Wheeler after the side’s fifth clean sheet in its last eight games.

CLUB NEWS / www.cambridgesoccer.co.nz THIS YEAR’S end of season senior prizegiving will be held at the Cambridge Town Hall on Friday October 16. The success of last year’s function, at the same venue, was marked by a larger–than– usual attendance, encouraged by the switch to Friday night. AUGUST 1 is D-Day for two of our club’s “more social” teams. Five years ago, the rivalry between the club’s Waikato D1 and D2 teams was legendary and arguments have raged since as to which team had bragging rights. To settle the matter, players from the D1 and D2 sides from five seasons ago will face off in a “friendly” at John Kerkhof Park on Saturday August 1.

CELEBRATING OUR ACHIEVEMENTS

‘ ... a golden season for the Cambridge Football Club’ — Cambridge Edition

Our club’s most successful year CAMBRIDGE Football Club swept a number of prestigious awards in 2014 — a period called the club’s “golden season” by the Cambridge Edition. The club was named WaiBOP Football’s Club of the Year for 2014, chosen from the region’s 106 affiliated clubs. The honour reflected the work by Cambridge’s army of volunteers to not only provide football for its own members but also to stage regional and national events for the sport. These include hosting WaiBOP–run coaching courses and game days for youngsters, as well as being the home ground for ASB Premiership side WaiBOP United. Cambridge is one of six bases for national league football (the others are Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin). Cambridge was named the 2014 Waipa District Sports Club of the Year and was a finalist in the Waikato Sports Club of the Year. Its chairman, Greg Zeuren, was named Administrator of the Year for both Waipa District and for the Waikato, for his leadership of the club’s committee. The club was also awarded the Supreme

RED: The matchday magazine of Cambridge FC

Award (pictured) for the Waipa District’s Trustpower Community Awards, becoming only the second sports club to take the trophy which recognises services to the local community. Our club was a finalist at the national Trustpower Community Awards held in Wellington in late March. Cambridge also won two WaiBOP Football Best Practice awards. Success in 2014 also came on the pitch. Our senior men’s first team won the Federation Challenge Shield last year and went into 2015 as the holder. The team were runners–up in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Federation Division 1. Our women’s first team won the Waikato Women’s Cup, beating the previously unbeaten Claudelands Rovers 2–1 in the final. Our Under 15 boys’ youth team won the Waikato/Bay of Plenty Nike Cup tournament, a feat repeated this year. The side also won the WaiBOP Federation U–15 Youth League.

In 2012, Cambridge FC announced that John Kerkhof Park would also become the home base for Cambridge Baseball Club.  2013: Cambridge FC and the neighbouring Cambridge Harriers and Athletics Club began a partnership, enabling the football club to play some games at the adjacent athletics track while it developed John Kerkhof Park. In 2013, the club won the Soccer Shop Waikato Plate and hosted premium events such as the Soccer Shop Waikato Cup Final, the Waikato v Bay of Plenty All Stars game, and the WaiBOP Women's All Stars v WaiBOP National League side. In late 2013, the club was appointed as the home ground for five ASB Premiership matches for new franchise WaiBOP United. This meant Cambridge became one of six bases for national league football in New Zealand (the others are Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin).

The appointment led to the club becoming an all-year operation, with investment in better facilities including upgraded playing surfaces, new changing rooms (scheduled for mid–2014) and a new irrigation system.  2014: The club's first team finished runners–up in the 2014 WaiBOP Federation Division 1, while the U-15 team won the Federation Youth League. Our women won the Waikato Women's Cup. The Cambidge Lacrosse Club moved its playing base to John Kerkhof Park in 2014. In 2014, the club won a series of high profile awards for its work in football and in the wider community. WaiBOP Football named the club its 2014 Club of the Year for its successful efforts to host ASP Premiership fixtures and other premium matches. Cambridge also won two WaiBOP Best Practice awards in 2014 (for building partnerships with sponsors, and for the participation of women at our club). The club was named Waipa District’s 2014 Supreme winner for the Truspower Community Awards, becoming only the second sports club to take this award. This

also led to the club’s nomination for the national Trustpower Community Awards to be held in Wellington in March 2015. Cambridge completed its hat-trick of major awards in 2014, being named Waipa District’s Sports Club of the Year. We were finalists in the Waikato Sports Club of the Year while chairman Greg Zeuren was named Sports Administrator of the Year for both Waipa and the Waikato in 2014.  2015: As the club entered its 68th season, it did so as an all–year operation, providing winter football for 600+ players, spring/early summer 5-a-side football for social players and acting as a base for national league summer football. It continued to make history — on February 6, 2015, it staged the first game of beach football by women played to FIFA rules and pitch standards in New Zealand, at the Karapiro Sandcourts. In March 2015, construction began of the club’s $200,000 extension to its changing rooms, providing six more sets of showers/ changing rooms for local and visiting players.

On 25 May 2015, the club staged its first ever international match when Fiji and Hungary came to Cambridge for an U–20 international as preparation for the FIFA U–20 World Cup tournament.  Our players Probably the club's best known past player is New Zealand international striker Chris Wood who joined English Championship club Leicester City in January 2012 from West Bromwich Albion. Wood made his senior debut at Cambridge as a 14–year–old, having previously played for our juniors. Another former New Zealand international is Maria Anderton, who played for the Football Ferns in 1987, and captained the Cambridge women’s A team for 12 seasons until her retirement as a player in 2014.  Life Members Elected life members: Vic Butler, W.J.Sugden, Bert van Doorne, Eric Sugden, John Kerkhof, Alan Busst, Harry Bekkers, Hans Rakely, Rod Larnach, Kerry Dauphin, Bill Brown, Robert Bradley, Peter Martens.

CLUB NEWS

Changing rooms nearly ready OUR LONG–AWAITED extensions to the changing rooms at John Kerkhof Park are almost ready. Three weekends of working bees have seen concrete pads laid around the outside of the $200,000 building, while new drains have been laid and interior walls and showers painted. Builder Ben Latham and plumber Steve Barrot have been working for several months on the extensions that will lead to six new changing rooms and the addition of storage space for equipment. Project manager Geoff Wheeler has been co–ordinating volunteer work on the site, while Brett Halliday and his digger have laid new drains and a soak pit, helping resolve a long–standing drainage issue in the corner of the car park.

The new changing rooms have resulted from five years of fundraising and they present an opportunity for sponsors looking for ways to promote their businesses. The club is offering naming rights to each of the six changing rooms, providing sponsors with exposure to thousands of players each year. The naming rights are available for periods of three to six years. Anyone interested in taking up this opportunity can contact Geoff Wheeler (geoff@jetcreative.co.nz) or club secretary Josh Easby (cambridgesoccer@gmail.com). The club will host an official opening of the new building after it is completed.
