‘... their collective enthusiasm is what sets their club apart from others ... ’ Josh Easby, the secretary of Cambridge Football Club, sees the chance to learn ... A FEW WEEKS ago, many of our club volunteers travelled to Auckland to support our team in the Chatham Cup against Central United. Central are the winter feeder club for national champions Auckland City FC, a club that’s won millions of dollars of prizemoney in recent years through their exploits at the FIFA Club World Cup. But visit Kiwitea St, their football ground in residential Sandringham, and you realise the success of the club has not been built on those millions of dollars. In the words of club chairman Ivan Vuksich,

the club’s success has been built through the work of “people who care”. He’s talking of the 50 or so hardcore volunteers who work together for the overall success of their club. They work in the bar, the kitchen and on the pitches. Someone scrubs out the dressing rooms (and in our case, leaves a message of welcome pinned to the wall of the visitors’ dressing room). When the nets go up, the volunteers also clean the posts with soapy water. Everyone seems to pitch in. One guy’s contribution is to buy more than a hundred balloons for each game, blowing them up and attaching them to lamp posts in the street around the ground. Their collective enthusiasm is what sets their club apart from others. The success on the pitch (and its prizemoney) is the end result from all that passion. Our club is lucky to have a growing friendship with Auckland City who visited our club last December so their players could hold a fun coaching session with our juniors. Our U-17s benefitted from attending their tournament early this year. We value that friendship, and we have much we can learn from them.

CAMBRIDGE FC are hosting a two–day holiday programme for boys and girls aged 6–12 who want to improve their footballing skills — and have some fun. The programme will be run by Cambridge first team player Adrian Clark whose coaching credits include leading teams to title wins in the WaiBOP Federation U-15 and U-17 competitions. He will be helped by members of the Cambridge U-19 squad who he will coach at this year’s national youth tournament in Napier. Learn new skills, and play fun games including a mini World Cup tournament in the afternoon. To register, please go to the News Section of our website. Funder helps club replace old and rusty goalposts OUR CLUB’S ageing goalposts are about
to be significantly upgraded, thanks to community funder Pub Charity. Pub Charity have provided Cambridge FC with a grant for $9,840 to buy 9 sets of 3.5m goalposts to replace our rusty posts, and to provide more for our growing numbers of junior players. Till now, the club has been forced to move around its stock of goalposts, switching them between senior training pitches, junior playing fields and then for use as 5-a-side goals over the summer. The grant from Pub Charity will enable our players, young and old, to benefit from having the right equipment, at last.
Our club is grateful for the support of Pub Charity. Pub Charity venues in Waipa District include Cambridge’s Masonic Hotel, in Duke St, and the Alexandra Tavern at Pirongia. * The new goalposts have been delivered to our club and will be assembled and ready for use by mid–July.
Tough weekend at the top TWO DRAWS and a narrow loss marked Cambridge FC’s last weekend in regional and
provincial competitions. Cambridge clawed their way to third spot in football’s Loaded WaiBOP Premiership after three of the four leading clubs all failed to win their weekend fixtures. Cambridge returned from Papamoa with a 1-1 draw while rivals Matamata Swifts and Melville United both lost. Papamoa went into the break 1-0 ahead through Rikki Ringrose before Jason Chewins rescued a point for Cambridge with his eighth goal of the season. Next weekend, Cambridge host Tauranga’s Old Blues at John Kerkhof Park (2.45pm kick off ) with the visitors claiming a useful 3-2 win against Matamata in their last game. In the WaiBOP Championship, Cambridge’s
improved recent form kept them in the game till the end but the side lost 2-1 to league leaders West Hamilton. Rob Cassidy gave West Ham a first-half lead and the teams then battled out an even second spell with Jarred Tooley scoring the home side’s winner. Jack O’Leary scored for Cambridge, his fourth league goal of the season. In the Waikato A division, Cambridge took a 2-1 first-half lead against Matamata Swifts with goals from Mauro Periera and Harry Turpitt. However Cambridge could not hold onto their lead and shared the points with a 2-2 draw.

Bar manager opportunity CAMBRIDGE Football Club is looking for someone who wants to develop skills and qualifications that will help them in the hospitality industry. The club is seeking a bar manager for 2017 who has either already got an approved bar licence or is willing to undergo the training necessary to achieve the qualification. The club will sponsor the costs required for the right candidate to seek their bar manager’s licence. The club’s current bar manager, Tania Zeuren, is planning to step down next year for a well-earned break so the club is keen to identify potential replacements as soon as possible. Patrick Woodlock (midfield/captain) In his second spell at Cambridge, with Northern League experience here and with Wanderers and Ngaruawahia Utd. Waikato FC Youth player and Waikato age group rep. Has won Cambridge’s Player of Year award four times. Danny Styles (midfield) A hard–working midfielder, Styles joined Cambridge in 2013 and was a first–team regular in 2014. In 2015, work commitments limited his appearances but the club hopes to see more of him on the pitch this season.
Adrian Clark (defender) Experienced and reads the game well, played for top Wellington clubs Lower Hutt and Stop Out before joining Cambridge.
Jason Szabo (forward or midfield) Experienced attacking midfielder who hails from the UK. Gets amongst the goals and was 2013 top scorer and ‘Player of the Year’ for our Waikato A team, and runner–up for the Premiership team’s 2015 Golden Boot.
Kieran Hill (defender) A first team regular at Ngaruawahia United until his transfer to John Kerkhof Park last year, he brings considerable Northern League experience to Cambridge.
Tom Woutersen (forward) Learned his football with Cambridge, helping win the U–19 Satellite Youth Tournament in Napier, before spending three seasons with Palmerston North Marist. Returned to Cambridge for 2013.

Won the team’s Golden Boot in 2013 and again in 2015 with 14 goals in the WaiBOP Premiership. Adam Brady (forward) Joined the club as a new arrival from the United Kingdom in 2015, where he played for Melbourne Inn in the Plymouth and West Devon Combination Football League. Was a regular goalscorer for the WaiBOP Championship side and scored a memorable goal in the end–of– season promotion play–off against Waitemata. Sam Garmonsway (defender or winger) Former Cambridge High School player who joined the club in 2014 after playing for Universities AFC while studying at Canterbury University. Dan Podjursky (forward) A speedy forward with good ball control, Podjursky made his first team debut as a 17– year–old in the Northern League, and played a season for Hawkes Bay in the national youth league. Josh Dagnall (winger) Made his first team debut as a schoolboy, helping the side win promotion from the ‘old’ Federation 2 League to what is now the WaiBOP Premiership. Returned to the pitch last season after leaving Cambridge for a stint in the army. Callum MacLeod (forward) The leading goalscorer for the 2015 Cambridge U–17 team, MacLeod also won the Golden Boot for leading all scoring in the WaiBOP U–17 Federation League. Promising youngster who marked his senior club debut with a goal in the opening game of the 2016 WaiBOP Championship. Jack Taylor (forward) In his second spell at Cambridge, having returned to the club for the 2016 season. In 2014, he was the club’s top goalscorer in the ‘old’ Federation 1, and he led the forward line to help the side win promotion from Federation 2 the year before.
Jason Chewins (defender or midfield) Rejoineds Cambridge for 2015 after a spell with Northern League club Melville United, having won their Player of the Year title in 2011 and played national league football for Waikato FC. Before emigrating, Chewins set an all–time club record with 489 appearances for professional club Aldershot Town. Glen Carmichael (forward or midfield) In his second spell with Cambridge after a short stint with Northern League club Ngaruawahia United. Previously played Northern League for Matamata Swifts. Andrew Taylor (utility) First joined Cambridge in 2011 to play Northern League and returned after a spell at Matamata to play at the club where he also coaches the women’s first team. Versatile and able to play in most positions. Brett Clark (co–coach) Veteran player with the club and former first team player who took the reins in 2015, leading a newly–formed coaching group. Mike Woodlock (co– coach) Coached Cambridge between 2008 and 2010 in Northern League Division 2 and brings vast experience to the coaching team. Kim Brierley (goalkeeper coach) Runs the Just4Keepers goalkeeping academy, coaches WaiBOP Federation goalkeepers and has been the WaiBOP women’s ASB League goalkeeper coach for the past two seasons. Chrissy Goodin (team manager) The first woman to manage a Cambridge men’s first team, Goodin is an established member of the women’s first team and has served on the club’s committee in various roles.

Old Blues FC was founded 13 years ago, the brain child of Steve Worlsey and John Cooper who were discussing the possibility of entering a team of mates into the local leagues. From those beginnings the club has slowly grown until the point it now has five teams covering all skill levels and genders The club achieved its biggest success when winning the 2011 Waikato/Bay of Plenty Federation Division 1. The side challenged for a place in the Northern League but was beaten in the play– offs by Manukau City who then replaced Cambridge in the competition. Old Blues finished 6th on the 2014 table, and then improved to fourth position last season. We welcome their players and supporters to John Kerkhof Park.

OUR CLUB’S HISTORY
From humble beginnings ... CAMBRIDGE Football Club has been serving its community since its formation in 1948 when football enthusiasts began organising games for two junior teams. Senior clubrooms at John Kerkhof Park : Home since 1967 with major extensions added to the original building in 1974 and 2015. divisions into the Waikato Bay of Plenty Football Federation Division Two to rebuild under coach Karl Dagnall and won promotion in 2012 to Waikato Bay of Plenty Football Federation Division One. In 2012, Cambridge FC announced that John Kerkhof Park would also become the home base for Cambridge Baseball Club. 2013: Cambridge FC and the neighbouring Cambridge Harriers and Athletics Club began a partnership, enabling the football club to play some games at the adjacent athletics track while it developed John Kerkhof Park. In 2013, the club won the Soccer Shop Waikato Plate and hosted premium events such as the Soccer Shop Waikato Cup Final, the Waikato v Bay of Plenty All Stars game, and the WaiBOP Women's All Stars v WaiBOP National League side. In late 2013, the club was appointed as the home ground for five ASB Premiership matches for new franchise WaiBOP United. This meant Cambridge became one of six bases for national league football in New Zealand (the others are Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin).
The appointment led to the club becoming an all-year operation, with investment in better facilities including upgraded playing surfaces, new changing rooms (scheduled for mid–2014) and a new irrigation system. 2014: The club's first team finished runners–up in the 2014 WaiBOP Federation Division 1, while the U-15 team won the Federation Youth League. Our women won the Waikato Women's Cup. The Cambidge Lacrosse Club moved its playing base to John Kerkhof Park in 2014. In 2014, the club won a series of high profile awards for its work in football and in the wider community. WaiBOP Football named the club its 2014 Club of the Year for its successful efforts to host ASP Premiership fixtures and other premium matches. Cambridge also won two WaiBOP Best Practice awards in 2014 (for building partnerships with sponsors, and for the participation of women at our club). The club was named Waipa District’s 2014 Supreme winner for the Truspower Community Awards, becoming only the second sports club to take this award. This

also led to the club’s nomination for the national Trustpower Community Awards to be held in Wellington in March 2015. Cambridge completed its hat-trick of major awards in 2014, being named Waipa District’s Sports Club of the Year. We were finalists in the Waikato Sports Club of the Year while chairman Greg Zeuren was named Sports Administrator of the Year for both Waipa and the Waikato in 2014. 2015: As the club entered its 68th season, it did so as an all–year operation, providing winter football for 600+ players, spring/early summer 5-a-side football for social players and acting as a base for national league summer football. It continued to make history — on February 6, 2015, it staged the first game of beach football by women played to FIFA rules and pitch standards in New Zealand, at the Karapiro Sandcourts. In March 2015, construction began of the club’s $200,000 extension to its changing rooms, providing six more sets of showers/ changing rooms for local and visiting players. On 25 May 2015, the club staged its first ever international match when Fiji and Hungary came to Cambridge for an U–20
international as preparation for the FIFA U–20 World Cup tournament. In July 2015, our club was awarded the Quality Club Mark by New Zealand Football, becoming only the fourth club in our region to achieve the 1 Star status, and becoming one of fewer than 30 clubs throughout the contry to earn the QCM. Our players Probably the club's best known past player is New Zealand international striker Chris Wood who joined English Championship club Leeds United for $4.6 million from Leicester City in July 2015. Wood made his senior debut at Cambridge as a 14–year–old, having previously played for our juniors. Another former New Zealand international is Maria Anderton, who played for the Football Ferns in 1987, and captained the Cambridge women’s A team for 12 seasons until her retirement as a player in 2014.
