‘... frustrating as it is, coping with the elements is just one more challenge ... ’ Josh Easby, the secretary of Cambridge Football Club, reflects on a spell of wet weather ...  WHEN THE HEAVENS opened last week, the resulting rain caused more than its share of problems. On the Friday, three people worked for four hours, preparing our clubrooms and pitches for a weekend of games — two of which were transferred to the Athletics Ground and the others called off. Linemarker Graham Clark dodged rain all week, anxious to mark all the junior and senior pitches in time, and hoping the paint wouldn’t disappear in the wet. Outdoor facilities manager Greg Zeuren took time off work to visit John Kerkhof Park several times, checking on the state of

pitches and agonising over which games could be played on which fields, if at all. The grounds were closed for training during the week; teams re-arranged their training plans. Some of our teams weren’t sure whether their weekend games would go ahead — or even if they had matches scheduled. It’s the middle of winter, the time of the season when the going gets tough. But as frustrating as it was, we know that we will get through our season and coping with the elements is just one more challenge. Unless you’re a duck, of course. One family of ducks took advantage of the rain to settle in for a stay at our club (above) ...

First teamers head to US  CAMBRIDGE FC’s travelling footballers — first team players Josh Clark and Matthew Wheeler — have returned to the United States after a winter stint with their home club. The pair are spending most of their year playing college football in the United States after being awarded scholarships there. Clark was the first Cambridge player to head to the US after he landed a scholarship in 2014 with Murray State College, in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Last year, two more Cambridge players, Wheeler and Kyle Wisnewski, joined Clark at Murray State. When the US college season ended, Clark and Wheeler returned to New Zealand and have both been regulars for Cambridge in the Loaded WaiBOP Premiership. However they have now returned to the US, ready to

go into pre–season training. While central defender Wheeler will rejoin Murray State, Clark has taken up an offer of a scholarship with William Woods University, Missouri. The William Woods Owls play in the American Midwest Conference and have a roster of scholarship players that include international imports, including some last season who had been with English clubs such as Arsenal, Reading and Bristol City. Clark’s last game for Cambridge this season was the 6–1 home win against Katikati in which he scored and was the Carters Cambridge Player of the Day.

Club to get new strips thanks to racing body  OUR CLUB has been awarded a $3,700

grant from the New Zealand Racing Board to help buy four new sets of kit. The four strips will be alternatives to the ‘home’ kit of red and white stripes, for use when playing opponents whose colours present a clash of colours. This is of signficant benefit to our club, especially as our existing strips are more than three years old and are in need of replacement. The racing board allocates 20% of proceeds from gaming machines at its venues to sports-related activities. In Cambridge, the board has gaming machines at the TAB in Duke St.

Last year, the NZ Racing Board provided a grant to our club of $5,200 to help purchase linemarking paint used on our junior and senior fields. We are grateful for the board’s support.

Six games to go!  CAMBRIDGE HAS six rounds left of the Loaded WaiBOP Premiership in which to overhaul

runaway leaders Ngongotaha and retain the title won last season. That fixture was meant to be played last Unbeaten Ngongotaha have a nine point lead with 18 points still to play for, meaning weekend but the two clubs decided to Cambridge will need the Bay side to soon play their catch-up game at Ngongotaha’s Stembridge Road, with the home side start dropping points. That’s possible if the team loses form with scraping home 1-0. Upsets can still happen and regardless of four of their remaining games against teams what Ngongotaha does, Cambridge will be in the top four of the competition. Ngongotaha still have to visit John Kerkhof taking one game at a time, determined to Park to play second-placed Cambridge, and keep stacking up the league points. Last weekend’s 5-2 win against Tauranga have home and away games against thirdBoys’ College extended the team’s current placed Matamata Swifts. One of the trickier games might be the unbeaten run to seven games, with six of September 10 trip to Otumoetai whose main those comfortable wins. And the number of goals scored each pitch is exposed to the elements and the home side knows best how to deal with the week might prove crucial if Ngongotaha and Cambridge finish the season even on points. strong winds that trip up visiting sides.

5–a–side planning starts  CAMBRIDGE FC are looking for volunteers to help run this year’s senior and junior summer 5-a-side competitions. These midweek competitions have grown in popularity with more than 300 adults taking part in the summer league, while our first junior 5-a-sides launched last summer. The senior competition runs from early November — mid-February with a break for Christmas/New Year. After the success of last summer’s inaugural junior competition, we’re keen to run two sixweek blocks of games at the junior fields, one each side of Christmas. If you are willing to help run either of these events, please email club secretary Josh Easby at cambridgesoccer@gmail.com. We’re pleased to confirm that this year’s senior 5-a-side competition will be known as the Onyx Cafe & Bar Summer League, while the junior competition will become the Annette Breen Summer 5-a-Sides, thanks to the support of both club sponsors. Please keep watching our club website for more news about our summer competitions, when we’ll post details of how to register teams and players.  JAMIE MCKEAN was one of 10 football

volunteers recognised by WaiBOP Football’s Thank–a–Volunteer Promotion last month, earning him a $50 fuel voucher. Jamie was recognised for the work he does for our club coaching senior and junior players, and being part of our club committee.

 The Entertainment Book is now available

through Cambridge Football Club. It’s full of coupons giving you access to some great deals when you eat out. Use it for two meals and you are effectively in profit! Of every dollar spent buying the book, 20% will go to our club. Details at our website (www. cambridgesoccer.co.nz).  FORMER Cambridge coach and long-

time referee Mark Ball wants to help club members who are looking to buy or sell a property — or know someone who needs help. Mark is a residential sales consultant with Lugton’s and since last year, he’s been offering his services to club members. In return for their leads, he’s willing to donate a $1,000 to our club for any house listings that lead to a successful sale, and he’ll donate $500 to the club if any member refers a buyer to him and it leads to a successful transaction. If you want to take up Mark on his offer, email him at mark.ball@lugtons.co.nz or phone him on 021 286 7115.

Today’s visitors, Rotorua United, are a relatively new club, having been founded in 2007 after the merger of Rotorua Suburbs and Rotorua City. Under the banner of One City, One Club, One Vision, the reformed club has been successful at every level — men, women and youth teams — and were the Waikato & Bay of Plenty Federation League One runners–up in 2010. That success had followed Bay of Plenty Championships in 2009 (Division 1) and 2008 (Division 2), while United’s women’s team became Bay 1 champions and Pullar Cup victors in their 2010 debut season. The club attributes its revival to its young players. The club has built its recent success around the development of youth, and introduced women’s football only six seasons ago.

Senior clubrooms at John Kerkhof Park : Home since 1967 with major extensions added to the original building in 1974 and 2015. divisions into the Waikato Bay of Plenty Football Federation Division Two to rebuild under coach Karl Dagnall and won promotion in 2012 to Waikato Bay of Plenty Football Federation Division One. In 2012, Cambridge FC announced that John Kerkhof Park would also become the home base for Cambridge Baseball Club.   2013: Cambridge FC and the neighbouring Cambridge Harriers and Athletics Club began a partnership, enabling the football club to play some games at the adjacent athletics track while it developed John Kerkhof Park. In 2013, the club won the Soccer Shop Waikato Plate and hosted premium events such as the Soccer Shop Waikato Cup Final, the Waikato v Bay of Plenty All Stars game, and the WaiBOP Women's All Stars v WaiBOP National League side. In late 2013, the club was appointed as the home ground for five ASB Premiership matches for new franchise WaiBOP United. This meant Cambridge became one of six bases for national league football in New Zealand (the others are Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin).

The appointment led to the club becoming an all-year operation, with investment in better facilities including upgraded playing surfaces, new changing rooms (scheduled for mid–2014) and a new irrigation system.   2014: The club's first team finished runners–up in the 2014 WaiBOP Federation Division 1, while the U-15 team won the Federation Youth League. Our women won the Waikato Women's Cup. The Cambidge Lacrosse Club moved its playing base to John Kerkhof Park in 2014. In 2014, the club won a series of high profile awards for its work in football and in the wider community. WaiBOP Football named the club its 2014 Club of the Year for its successful efforts to host ASP Premiership fixtures and other premium matches. Cambridge also won two WaiBOP Best Practice awards in 2014 (for building partnerships with sponsors, and for the participation of women at our club). The club was named Waipa District’s 2014 Supreme winner for the Truspower Community Awards, becoming only the second sports club to take this award. This

also led to the club’s nomination for the national Trustpower Community Awards to be held in Wellington in March 2015. Cambridge completed its hat-trick of major awards in 2014, being named Waipa District’s Sports Club of the Year. We were finalists in the Waikato Sports Club of the Year while chairman Greg Zeuren was named Sports Administrator of the Year for both Waipa and the Waikato in 2014.   2015: As the club entered its 68th season, it did so as an all–year operation, providing winter football for 600+ players, spring/early summer 5-a-side football for social players and acting as a base for national league summer football. It continued to make history — on February 6, 2015, it staged the first game of beach football by women played to FIFA rules and pitch standards in New Zealand, at the Karapiro Sandcourts. In March 2015, construction began of the club’s $200,000 extension to its changing rooms, providing six more sets of showers/ changing rooms for local and visiting players. On 25 May 2015, the club staged its first ever international match when Fiji and Hungary came to Cambridge for an U–20

international as preparation for the FIFA U–20 World Cup tournament. In July 2015, our club was awarded the Quality Club Mark by New Zealand Football, becoming only the fourth club in our region to achieve the 1 Star status, and becoming one of fewer than 30 clubs throughout the contry to earn the QCM.   Our players Probably the club's best known past player is New Zealand international striker Chris Wood who joined English Championship club Leeds United for $4.6 million from Leicester City in July 2015. Wood made his senior debut at Cambridge as a 14–year–old, having previously played for our juniors. Another former New Zealand international is Maria Anderton, who played for the Football Ferns in 1987, and captained the Cambridge women’s A team for 12 seasons until her retirement as a player in 2014.   Life Members Elected life members: Vic Butler, W.J.Sugden, Bert van Doorne, Eric Sugden, John Kerkhof, Alan Busst, Harry Bekkers, Hans Rakely, Rod Larnach, Kerry Dauphin, Bill Brown, Robert Bradley, Peter Martens.
