‘... the rivalry between Ngongotaha and Cambridge has helped raise the overall standard in the Premiership ... ’ Josh Easby, the secretary of Cambridge Football Club, looks forward to a crucial match ...  THIS WEEKEND, our club will host a double header of games against Ngongotaha, with the results having significant impact on the final placings in the Loaded WaiBOP Premiership and WaiBOP Championship. Unbeaten in the Premiership, coach Shane Davis and the Ngongy boys have set a hot pace this season, and flagged how much they had improved on last season as early as March when they raced through our club’s pre–season Cambridge Sevens with impressive levels of fitness. They’ve been the standout team in this

season’s competition and now it comes down to four remaining matches for them and the knowledge that a single point against Cambridge will send the title south. Cambridge will give their all, no doubt, and the fixture at Matamata Swifts a week later could at least decide which club will take the runners–up spot. The rivalry between Ngongotaha and Cambridge over the past two seasons has clearly helped raise the overall standard of football in the Premiership, a competition that has benefitted from its makeover from the old “Fed 1” days. Spectators will also get another chance to watch Cambridge’s Championship side in the early game at John Kerkhof Park. We shouldn’t underestimate the importance of their improving form this season, with 11 wins under their belt. They’ve been a young side with many players making their senior season debuts. Their attitude, in supporting the first team and the Waikato A side when needed, says much for their commitment, and there’s every reason to look for further improvement next year.

Women’s run continues

 CAMBRIDGE men returned from Otumoetai with a win and a draw last weekend after playing a double header in the Loaded WaiBOP Premiership and WaiBOP Championship. The 0-0 result in the Loaded WaiBOP Premiership means Cambridge sit in second place on the table but 11 points behind unbeaten leaders Ngongotaha who ran out easy 6-1 winners over third-placed Matamata Swifts. The results mean Cambridge can, theoretically, overhaul Ngongotaha but only if the Bay side loses all their remaining fixtures and Cambridge win all their games. The Carters Cambridge Player of the Day against Otumoetai was captain Patrick Woodlock. In the WaiBOP Championship, Cambridge returned from Otumoetai with a 1-0 victory with the winner scored by James Young. In the Waikato A Division, Cambridge and local rivals Matamata Swifts could not be separated, fighting out a 2-2 draw with all the goals scored in the second half. Cambridge’s goals came from Mauro Pereira and co-coach

Jamie McKean. The draw was a satisfying turnaround for Cambridge, with the team having lost to the same opponents by 5-2 on the same ground under floodlights in midweek. The Cambridge D2s lost at home to Te Aroha Cobras 4-1 with Cambridge’s goal scored by Ben Carter. Meanwhile, Cambridge are closing in on an exciting finish to the Waikato Women’s League after an important win against Northern United. Cambridge beat the Hamilton side 2-1, with a goal in each half from top scorer Astrid Howarth who now takes her season’s tally to 25. The win keeps Cambridge in second place behind Tokoroa with those two teams set to play on September 4 in a game that could decide the Waikato title. Tokoroa beat third-placed Melville United 5-0 to stay in top spot. The win was Cambridge’s ninth in a row.

REGIONAL NEWS / www.waibopfootball.co.nz

Futsal coach appointed  WAIBOP FOOTBALL have appointed New Zealand international Futsal player Brayden

Lissington as head coach for this year’s National League. Lissington (right) is well–known to Cambridge, having played for Waikato Unicol teams against our Premiership side and for being an assessor during our club’s attainment of the QCM (Quality Club Mark). He has played in the WaiBOP Futsal National League side since its introduction in 2012, including captaining the team, and represented New Zealand playing for the Futsal Whites. Following his experience of the last twelve months, Brayden feels it is now time to share his knowledge through this role and get the best out of the young but now experienced WaiBOP side. Brayden has been involved in the Oceania Futsal World Cup qualifiers and build–up, recently played in the World University Championships in Brazil. More recently, he has been playing in the United States, playing the showcase game for the professional Futsal League, which

involves some of the best players in the world. Along with Brayden’s strong playing background, he has been heavily involved in coaching in the region with all age groups, including assisting with the Men’s Futsal National League side in previous seasons. He is currently undertaking his NZF Futsal Level 2 qualification. Trials for the WaiBOP Futsal team began last week.

Women’s squad underway  BARRY GARDINER has been appointed

head coach for WaiBOP Football’s National Women’s League team for the 2016 season. He has a wealth of coaching experience both internationally and within New Zealand and has recently completed the NZ Football Senior Level 3 course. In 2014 he took the WaiBOP u16 Girls squad to first place at the National Age group Tournament in Wellington and was also Assistant Coach for WaiBOP United in the 2015-16 ASB Premiership. Barry says: “I’m very excited about the

potential within the female game here and really looking forward to working closely with our talented senior players to achieve the best results for them and the Federation.” Gardiner was selected from a number of experienced and qualified candidates for the position. This is an indication of the strong interest in the female game. 5–a–side planning starts  CAMBRIDGE FC are looking for volunteers to help run this year’s senior and junior summer 5-a-side competitions. These midweek competitions have grown in popularity with more than 300 adults taking part in the summer league, while our first junior 5-a-sides launched last summer. The senior competition runs from early November — mid-February with a break for Christmas/New Year. After the success of last summer’s inaugural junior competition, we’re keen to run two sixweek blocks of games at the junior fields, one each side of Christmas. If you are willing to help run either of these events, please email club secretary Josh Easby at cambridgesoccer@gmail.com. We’re pleased to confirm that this year’s senior 5-a-side competition will be known as the Onyx Cafe & Bar Summer League, while the junior competition will become the Annette Breen Summer 5-a-Sides, thanks to the support of both club sponsors. Please keep watching our club website for more news about our summer competitions, when we’ll post details of how to register teams and players.  DATE for your diary — our annual Junior

Prizegiving is scheduled for Monday September 19 at the Raleigh Christian Centre, Leamington. Our Senior Prizegiving will be in late September (date to be confirmed) at the Cambridge Town Hall.

 The Entertainment Book is now available

through Cambridge Football Club. It’s full of coupons giving you access to some great deals when you eat out. Use it for two meals and you are effectively in profit! Of every dollar spent buying the book, 20% will go to our club. Details at our website (www. cambridgesoccer.co.nz).  FORMER Cambridge coach and long-

time referee Mark Ball wants to help club members who are looking to buy or sell a property — or know someone who needs help. Mark is a residential sales consultant with Lugton’s and since last year, he’s been offering his services to club members. In return for their leads, he’s willing to donate a $1,000 to our club for any house listings that lead to a successful sale, and he’ll donate $500 to the club if any member refers a buyer to him and it leads to a successful transaction. If you want to take up Mark on his offer, email him at mark.ball@lugtons.co.nz or phone him on 021 286 7115.

In 2012, Cambridge FC announced that John Kerkhof Park would also become the home base for Cambridge Baseball Club.   2013: Cambridge FC and the neighbouring Cambridge Harriers and Athletics Club began a partnership, enabling the football club to play some games at the adjacent athletics track while it developed John Kerkhof Park. In 2013, the club won the Soccer Shop Waikato Plate and hosted premium events such as the Soccer Shop Waikato Cup Final, the Waikato v Bay of Plenty All Stars game, and the WaiBOP Women's All Stars v WaiBOP National League side. In late 2013, the club was appointed as the home ground for five ASB Premiership matches for new franchise WaiBOP United. This meant Cambridge became one of six bases for national league football in New Zealand (the others are Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin).

The appointment led to the club becoming an all-year operation, with investment in better facilities including upgraded playing surfaces, new changing rooms (scheduled for mid–2014) and a new irrigation system.   2014: The club's first team finished runners–up in the 2014 WaiBOP Federation Division 1, while the U-15 team won the Federation Youth League. Our women won the Waikato Women's Cup. The Cambidge Lacrosse Club moved its playing base to John Kerkhof Park in 2014. In 2014, the club won a series of high profile awards for its work in football and in the wider community. WaiBOP Football named the club its 2014 Club of the Year for its successful efforts to host ASP Premiership fixtures and other premium matches. Cambridge also won two WaiBOP Best Practice awards in 2014 (for building partnerships with sponsors, and for the participation of women at our club). The club was named Waipa District’s 2014 Supreme winner for the Truspower Community Awards, becoming only the second sports club to take this award. This

also led to the club’s nomination for the national Trustpower Community Awards to be held in Wellington in March 2015. Cambridge completed its hat-trick of major awards in 2014, being named Waipa District’s Sports Club of the Year. We were finalists in the Waikato Sports Club of the Year while chairman Greg Zeuren was named Sports Administrator of the Year for both Waipa and the Waikato in 2014.   2015: As the club entered its 68th season, it did so as an all–year operation, providing winter football for 600+ players, spring/early summer 5-a-side football for social players and acting as a base for national league summer football. It continued to make history — on February 6, 2015, it staged the first game of beach football by women played to FIFA rules and pitch standards in New Zealand, at the Karapiro Sandcourts. In March 2015, construction began of the club’s $200,000 extension to its changing rooms, providing six more sets of showers/ changing rooms for local and visiting players. On 25 May 2015, the club staged its first ever international match when Fiji and Hungary came to Cambridge for an U–20

international as preparation for the FIFA U–20 World Cup tournament. In July 2015, our club was awarded the Quality Club Mark by New Zealand Football, becoming only the fourth club in our region to achieve the 1 Star status, and becoming one of fewer than 30 clubs throughout the contry to earn the QCM.   Our players Probably the club's best known past player is New Zealand international striker Chris Wood who joined English Championship club Leeds United for $4.6 million from Leicester City in July 2015. Wood made his senior debut at Cambridge as a 14–year–old, having previously played for our juniors. Another former New Zealand international is Maria Anderton, who played for the Football Ferns in 1987, and captained the Cambridge women’s A team for 12 seasons until her retirement as a player in 2014.   Life Members Elected life members: Vic Butler, W.J.Sugden, Bert van Doorne, Eric Sugden, John Kerkhof, Alan Busst, Harry Bekkers, Hans Rakely, Rod Larnach, Kerry Dauphin, Bill Brown, Robert Bradley, Peter Martens.
