Welcome to Cambridge WE’RE ONLY a few days from seeing the world’s second biggest football event take place on our doorstep. The FIFA U–20 World Cup launches next Saturday (May 30) with an opening ceremony, followed by New Zealand’s first group game against Ukraine. In the Waikato, we’ll get the chance to watch eight matches at the Waikato Stadium in Hamilton, and those of us who are really keen can easily get to Auckland and New Plymouth for more games. The track record of the tournament is that it helps launch the young players who are ready to become the next generation of big stars. Examples are Argentinians Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero, France’s Thierry Henry and Paul Pogba, Brazil’s Ronaldinho, Holland’s Arjen Robben, Spain’s Andres Iniesta, Chile’s Alexis Sanchez, and Columbia’s James Rodriguez. Today, at Cambridge’s John Kerkhof Park, we’ll have a preview of what’s to come when the teams of Fiji and Hungary play a warm– up match as part of their preparation for the tournament. Fiji travel from their northern base (they’ll be playing group games in Whangarei and Christchurch), while Hungary come to Cambridge from New Plymouth. We appreciate the efforts they have made to bring top class football to our town, and give our children, in particular, the opportunity to see them in action. For Cambridge FC, today’s game marks another milestone in our development as a club and as a venue for regional, national
and, now, international football. Only three years ago, we were a winter– only club, focussing almost entirely on local competition. Our decision to become an all–year operation two years is paying dividends. We now cater for more than 650 men, women and children who play winter football (March–September), more than 350 who play spring/summer five–a-side games and we host ASB Premiership games over summer. John Kerkhof Park has quickly become a popular home for WaiBOP United, and one of six bases for national league football (others being Auckland, Wellington, Napier, Christchurch and Dunedin). We’re proud that today, for the first time, we can host international footballers. Our progress has been made possible by a huge group of enthusiastic club volunteers, and we also need to thank others who have given us their support — WaiBOP Football, the Waipa District Council and our sponsors. Fiji THIS WILL be F Fiji’s first participation at the FIFA U–20 World Cup and the squad will be looking to benefit from playing close to home, and with the support of an estimated 60,000 New Zealand–based Fijian supporters. While most of the squad play for Fijian clubs, central defender Mohammed Khan has played ASB Premiership football for Waitakere United and is looking forward to the tournament.
“It will be a special atmosphere,” he said. “I will have a lot of my family coming from overseas just to watch me play, and make them proud.” Fiji’s group matches are against Germany (June 1), Honduras (June 4) and Uzbekistan (June 7). Fiji’s coach is Frank Farina, who played 67 internationals for Australia and was the Socceroos national coach for or eight eig ght yyears.
Hungary HUNGARY’S best performance in five appearances at the FIFA U-20 World Cup was the last time they participated, in Egypt in 2009, when they finished third. Their hopes in 2015 will be boosted by the form of their midfielder Zsolt Kolmar who is already a full international, having made his senior debut against Denmark in May 2014. “I ran out for the first time for Hungary in front of 20,000 spectators,” he said. “Those moments will stay with me forever.” Kalmar plays his club football for Bundesliga 2 club RB Leipzig with whom he’s signed a five-year contract. Meanwhile, Adam Nagy and Nagy Dominik joined the Hungarian squad in New Zealand at the weekend, having had their departure delayed by the appearance of their Ferencvaros Budapest club in the Hungarian Cup finals last Wednesday. Ferencvaros beat Videoton FC 4-0. Hungary’s coach is German Bernd Storck who was a German U–21 international who RED: The matchday magazine of Cambridge FC
played 147 games for Borussia Dortmund and 24 times for VfL Bochum in the German Bundesliga. After retiring as a player, he has held various coaching roles with German clubs and for two years, he was the national coach for Kazakhstan.
