Football for a new generation

Giving kids a great start in football

New Zealand Football has developed guidelines and supporting material to help clubs deliver junior football programmes that are matched to the needs of young players. This set of guidelines is called Junior Framework and is the first stage of New Zealand’s Whole of Football Plan. The Junior Framework ensures every child entering the game will take part in training and games that are tailored to his or her stage of football development — physical, mental, emotional/social and technical/tactical. Drawing on proven football development programmes from around the world, the Junior Framework provides children with a fun and rewarding experience at every stage, while developing their skills as football players. This is a nationwide initiative, so kids who move around New Zealand will be able to drop straight into the same setup at any club. Cambridge Football Club was chosen to be one of the few clubs to pilot the scheme in 2011, and we had a very positive response from both players and parents. 4

For more information, pick up a brochure at the Junior Clubrooms, or visit the New Zealand Football website www.nzfootball.co.nz. More about the Junior Framework on pages 12–13.

Grading

How players are chosen for teams Grading for the 2015 season (8th— Open Grade) will be held on Sunday March 8 and Sunday March 15. Players wishing to trial for the top two teams in a grade, will need to attend both trials. All players will need to attend the second trials on the 15th March to ensure they are accurately assessed and placed in the correct teams. Sunday 8th March 8th Grade, 10th Grade and Open Grade Trials only 9am - 10am — 10th Grade 1pm - 2pm — 8th Grade 2pm - 3pm — Open Grade These trials are for players wishing to trial for the top two teams only. Sunday 15th March - All Grades 12pm - 1pm — Girls Only Mini Festival 1pm - 2pm — 8th Grade 2pm - 3pm — 9th Grade 3pm - 4pm — 10th Grade 4pm - 5pm — 11th Grade 5pm - 6pm — Open Grade (12th/13th Grade) Please ensure your child arrives 15 minutes early as they will need to check in and receive a numbered bib. Grading The aim of Cambridge Football Club is to provide quality football opportunities for players of ALL levels and grading is the best way for us to ensure players are in teams with others of a similar ability; this process helps to ensure your child gets the best from their season. 8

Top Teams We are committed to having high level competition teams in every grade. Places in these teams are allocated strictly on ability and also, importantly, attitude. If having been placed in one of these teams we feel that a player is struggling or not showing the correct attitude it may, on occasion, be necessary to move them down; equally players may also be moved into a higher level if it is felt that they show the required skill level. This is done for the benefit of both the individual player and their team, by trialling for one of the top teams you are agreeing to this policy and accept that any decision made by the club is final.

Girls–only leagues This season WaiBOP Football will be running Girls Only Leagues in the following age groups: 7th Grade, 8th/9th Grade; 10th/11th Grade and Open Grade. Our club is a strong supporter of women’s football (we have three senior teams) and we would like to enter at least one team in all of these grades — so tell your friends — and let’s get more girls playing football! We will be holding a Girls Only Mini Festival for all interested girls on Sunday March 15, from 12pm–1pm, at the junior club grounds. * Girls–only leagues are part of the NZ Football pathway for girls and we encourage all girls to participate in these leagues.

Ways you can help the children The junior section of our club is run entirely by volunteers. If you are able to help, please indicate the areas in which you are able to assist the club when you fill out your child's online registration form. Junior Kickers We require the following assistance to run our Junior Kickers programme:

 Help with Saturday set up, and timing of games/announcing  Co–ordinators for each age group from 4th — 7th grade. Coaches/Game Leaders in each age group. If you are able to help or want to find out more, please contact us either by:  Email cfcjuniors@gmail.com Call Catherine on 021 950263.

How we stay in touch with members The club maintains a website to help members keep informed about vital information such as the season fixtures, results, photos and match reports. Catherine Clark keeps the website updated and invites coaches and parents to send her their news, reports and any photographs suitable for the club’s junior image gallery.

You can contact Catherine at cfcjuniors@gmail.com. Another great way for our players and parents to stay in touch is through our Facebook group, called Cambridge Football Club — Juniors. Search for it online and please join. This is kept updated with ground closures, cancellations, junior player news and events.

Support our shop Our junior shop plays an important part in the club’s activities. Visit our shop to buy pre–loved boots and gear, or order club jackets. The shop supplies hot chips and a selection of chocolate bars and drinks. Profits from the shop help buy essential equipment and kit to ensure we can cater as many children as possible, and you can help by supporting the shop. If you are willing to volunteer your time to help run the shop, please contact the club by emailing cfcjuniors@gmail.com. Cambridge Football Club — Junior Directory

Junior football framework

The principles of football’s Junior Framework are: Accumulation of hours and number of touches. To build fundamental skills, the Framework gives guidelines on the number of hours players should be training and playing each week. Small sided games ensure players touch the ball as much as possible to build technical ability. 12

Early Engagement. Focus on getting players involved and enthused as early as possible, to develop intrinsic motivation and love of the game before specialising. Recognising development age. Different players in the same age group will often be at different development Cambridge Football Club — Junior Directory

stages. The Junior Framework encourages a flexible approach to help players reach their true potential. Training emphasis periods. The Framework aims to promote the awareness of training emphasis periods, particularly for skill and physical development. It does this by providing clear recommendations for training to allow coaches to mximise the optimal windows of development. Four corners approach. At all stages we take account of

the four corners of a young player’s development: ● Physical ● Social/Emotional ● Mental ● Technical/Tactical. Age–appropriate games. Gradual progression from 3 to 9 a-side games ensures players are able and ready to move to the adult version of the game. It is a staggered progression that will ultimately leave the junior player more competent when playing the full-sized game at 11 a-side.

More opportunities for children WaiBOP Football provides extra opportunities for children to enjoy football through its ASB Fun Football Centres, Skill Development Clinics and Holiday Programmes. These clinics give children, no matter what their ability, the chance to have fun and begin a sporting habit that lasts for life. Organised and delivered by WaiBOP Football, the programmes give boys and girls the chance to learn skills, play games and have a great time under professional supervision. And if they have the passion and commitment, we offer the opportunity for young players to go further in the sport and be the best they can be. The programmes run for eight weeks in Term 1 and 4 and in the school holidays. Sessions run on weekdays after school, and are usually held at our junior club grounds in Vogel Street. Cambridge Football Club — Junior Directory

Coaches currently running clinics include WaiBOP United players Alexis Varela (pictured with Cambridge fan Keziah Clark) and Federico Marquez. For more information, watch for dates and details at either the WaiBOP Football website (www.waibopfootball.co.nz) or contact WaiBOP Football Development Officer Alec Wilson by emailing alec.w@ waibop.co.nz. 13
