CAMBRIDGE FOOTBALL CLUB Cambridge FC was established in 1948, based in the heart of the town. In 1967, Cambridge moved from the city to our new home on Vogel Street known as John Kerkhof Park - named after one of our great former club presidents. In 1974 Cambridge competed for the first time in the Northern League and played in the competition in various tiers of the league till the present day with only a few years playing in WaiBOP Premiership. In 2013 Cambridge was appointed as the home ground for WaiBOP United in the National League. In 2015, CFC hosted its first international match between Fiji and Hungary, as the teams preparation for the Under 20 FIFA World Cup. Cambridge has had its share of professional and internationally capped players coming through the ranks of the club. Notably players like Chris Wood, Che Bunce, Katie Duncan and Andrea Rogers have all worn the red and white stripes. In recent years Cambridge has had 4 players represent New Zealand at age group world cups as well as a handful of players playing for the national futsal team as well.

OUR MENS FIRST XI Welcome back to John Kerkhof Park for round 12 of the NRFL competition. This week we welcome our first round opponents Oratia United back on home soil. Having been somewhat unfortunate in that opening turf based fixture with a big decision not going our way late on, and building on the back of a great fighting performance last week at home versus Beachlands Maraetai; we look forward to an opportunity to improve on that early season result and continue to work our way into the top 6 for the final 10 games of the season with some increased consistency. I am certain Steve Cain and his side will be of a very similar mindset which should make for another entertaining encounter today

A warm welcome to Oratia United’s players, management and any travelling fans who have made the journey to John Kerkhof Park home of Cambridge Football Club. As the first half of the season comes to an end, we’ve had a couple of standout moments such as, Winning the derby against Claudelands Rovers early in the season. Playing Auckland United in the Chatham Cup, despite the score line not reflecting the game, our first half defensively was superb against a quality northern league prem team, who had a number of national league players. Recovering from losing 2 – 0 at halftime to beat Beachlands Maraetai 5 – 2. I am very proud of the team & how we have shown character at hard times which promotes growth and a healthy environment. Having Josh Clarkin and Jack Portegys returning to Cambridge from NRFL Premier teams Wanderers & Melville, has definitely added depth and quality to our squad. As well as having old heads such as Patrick Woodlock, Kieran Hill, Fraser Nicholls & Daniel Clarkin who have all played for Cambridge for a number of seasons now. A big Thank You to all the volunteers at the club, managers and sponsors who have helped us out so far this season, without you none of this would be possible.

OUR UNDER 23'S SQUAD Another weekend done and dusted. Unfortunate 3-1 lose is always hard to take but the main focus is development. They scored some very well worked goals on a bobbly pitch. The possession stats would be incredibly even on paper but we did struggle in the final third. All credit to Beachlands though, great game played in great spirits.

We had a fantastic performance from Ben Dixon to come on from the bench, give the team a lift and even bag himself a fantastic goal. We look forward to this week against Oratia. Fingers crossed for 3 points.

Colin

OUR CHAMPS TEAM

The win keeps Cambridge in a three-way battle for the title, with Otumoetai and Tauranga Old Blues. Playing in tricky windy conditions, Cambridge went behind after 15 minutes when their defence failed to deal with an Otumoetai corner and Caelan Fraher scored. Forward Tom Woutersen found the equaliser in the 27th minute, scoring from the edge of the penalty area. The sides turned around 1-1 with Cambridge playing into a strong wind for the second half. Midfielder Haydn Roil put Cambridge ahead with a solo effort on the hour but scrappy play allowed Otumoetai to find a leveller through substitute Caleb Gilchrist in the 73rd minute. The introduction of substitutes Willem Dikmans and Sam Reidy lifted the tempo and as time wound down, Cambridge found the winner.

OUR WOMENS FIRST XI

The Cambridge Womens Senior team travelled to Claudlands FC, at Galloway Park, for a top versus bottom of the table clash. The game was played in really good spirits from both teams, and I’d asked the girls to play in a certain way in the first half, to practice what we’d been working on in training. A few of the team were put in different positions too, with a couple of examples being our developing left back challenged with the striker role for the first part of the game, and our normal striker holding court as right back. The game finished 9-0 to Cambridge, and we finish the first half of the season unbeaten, and top of the table. And as an extra note - whilst the team continue to build, week on week, a special mention needs to go to the defensive line and our keeper - combined have conceded the smallest number of goals in our league!

OUR YOUTH TEAMS Due to the unfortunate turn in weather over the past week, we saw our youth federation u13s and u15s both without a game. Our federation U12s displayed some great football skills in the conditions they had to play in. Cambridge u19s had a meet and greet on Sunday where parents and players came together to organise fundraisers for their trip down to Napier in October keep an eye out for what’s to come. This Sunday our u15s take a road trip to play Rotorua whilst both our U12s & u13s set up to play Hamilton Wanderers. With the influence of the Ricki Herbert football academy we strive to play positive football and create a pathway for all youth players at the club.

OUR JUNIOR REDS Its been an amazing start to the football season for the Junior part of the Cambridge Football Club. We have had a large increase in the number of kids joining our ranks with having close to 550 boys and girls enjoying the beautiful game. This is an increase of 25% from 2020 and is encouraging for the future.

As an organisation we would like to thank the awesome group of coaches that tirelessly give up their time for mid-week training and Saturday game time, without this dedicated group of people our 54 teams would not be able to play on a Saturday morning. Looking forward to seeing how the rest of the season progresses, and a lot more happy/tired/muddy faces leaving the grounds after a solid game of football!
