Souvenir Programme: Soccer Shop Waikato Cup & Plate Finals 2016

‘... enjoy your day as we celebrate the sport we love, and thank those who make it possible ... ’ Steve Thomas, the chairman of Cambridge Football Club, welcomes our finals day visitors ...  BEHIND EVERY game of football is a vast amount of effort — work that often goes unnoticed. Whether the game is a cup final, such as today’s game at John Kerkhof Park, or a pre– season friendly, it takes an army of people to make it happen. As the 2017 winter season nears its end, we should reflect on the people who make our weekly football possible. Our regional federation has scheduled thousands of fixtures, juggling kick off times, ground availability and competition requirements, trying to keep one step ahead of nature and the inevitability of

postponements. Every week, referees travel to and from matches in every part of our region. And at club level, volunteers ensure pitches are mown and line–marked, and that facilities are provided for players to change, shower and enjoy post-match food and drink. This weekend, our club has taken time out to remind ourselves that we shouldn’t take for granted the work that so many put in, week in and week out. We’re proud to host the Soccer Shop Waikato Cup and Plate finals again, and we see them as a celebration for everyone involved in our game, not just those whose teams will take the field. Our guests today include many who help make the sport possible in our region — administrators, sponsors, WaiBOP Football staff and board members, council representatives and many volunteers. To everyone visiting John Kerkhof Park, welcome ... please enjoy your day as we celebrate the sport we love and thank those who make it possible.

Waikato Plate WAIHI STRIKER Richard James goes into this year’s Soccer Shop Waikato Plate final with a chance to create a rare achievement. So far, James has scored in all four rounds of the Plate, racking up an impressive 12 goals including six in Waihi’s 7–3 win in their semi–final against Northern United C The last time a player scored in all the rounds leading to the final was a year ago when Huntly Thistle’s Robert Wills found the net in every round. But he was kept goalless in the final as Melville United retained the Plate with an efficient 3–0 win at John Kerkhof Park. Waihi’s opponents in this year’s Plate, Waikato Unicol, have shared the goals around in their run to the final, with six individual players finding the net. Henry Leech scored a hat–trick in Unicol’s second round win against Melville United Knights. He’s scored four goals overall in the Plate, the same as team mate Bryn Davies who scored in three of Unicol’s ties.

Waikato Cup DAVID BAILEY, of Otorohanga FC, recalls his club’s past cup and league highlights ... OTOROHANGA’S B Team, who were playing in the Waikato D League, last won through to the Waikato Cup Final in 2010. They beat Melville A in a penalty shoot out in the semi final and played Wanderers A in the final. The game was drawn at full time and Wanderers won in extra time. This was a great result for the B Team. Otorohanga Club have always maintained at least one team, and in most occasions two teams, though their football standards have ebbed and flowed over the years like most country towns. In the 1960’s the club had a very strong team and in 1966 and 1967 won the Waikato First Division, which is now Waikato Bay of Plenty Premier League. They were runners-up in 1968 and won again in 1970, on this occasion winning the right to play in the Northern League. However, because of a players travelling overseas they did not take up the opportunity. In the 90’s they had a very strong Chatham Cup run, getting through to the finals of the Waikato area, eventually getting beaten by a very strong Melville team, which included Alan Lamb and Mark Cossey.

Shortly after that, they entered the Waikato BOP Premier League and for seven years Otorohanga and Taupo were the only teams that competed in the competition throughout that period. Otorohanga and Cambridge have a long association and competed against each other in Waikato Senior Leagues. The Kerkhof and Bailey families were well represented in many of these games and a number of Otorohanga and Cambridge players, played together in Waikato representative junior ranks and senior ranks. One of Otorohanga Club’s other great achievements is running for 35 years, an 18team 7-a-side summer tournament, which was one of the first started in New Zealand. This is competed for on Thursday nights over 20 weeks, with play offs and finals. They receive good sponsorship and team support for this event. It is pleasing to see over the years the Soccer Shop Waikato Cup has grown in status, and we are very grateful for Cambridge putting a big effort in to the day. We look forward to sharing the occasion and wish both teams, management and supporters an enjoyable time.
