Souvenir Programme: Soccer Shop Waikato Cup & Plate Finals 2016

‘... enjoy your day as we celebrate the sport we love, and thank those who make it possible ... ’ Steve Thomas, the chairman of Cambridge Football Club, welcomes our finals day visitors ...  BEHIND EVERY game of football is a vast amount of effort — work that often goes unnoticed. Whether the game is a cup final, such as today’s game at John Kerkhof Park, or a pre– season friendly, it takes an army of people to make it happen. As the 2016 winter season nears its end, we should reflect on the people who make our weekly football possible. Our regional federation has scheduled thousands of fixtures, juggling kick off times, ground availability and competition requirements, trying to keep one step ahead of nature and the inevitability of

postponements. Every week, referees travel to and from matches in every part of our region. And at club level, volunteers ensure pitches are mown and line–marked, and that facilities are provided for players to change, shower and enjoy post-match food and drink. This weekend, our club has taken time out to remind ourselves that we shouldn’t take for granted the work that so many put in, week in and week out. We’re proud to host the Soccer Shop Waikato Cup and Plate finals and we see them as a celebration for everyone involved in our game, not just those whose teams will take the field. Our guests today include many who help make the sport possible in our region — administrators, sponsors, federation staff, council representatives and many volunteers. We’re also taking this opportunity to formally open our new $200,000 changing facilities, and have invited the many people whose efforts have made them possible. To everyone visiting John Kerkhof Park, welcome ... please enjoy your day as we celebrate the sport we love and thank those who make it possible.

Waikato Cup Preview DON’T BE SURPRISED if the Soccer Shop Waikato Cup Final becomes a goalfest as both finalists have rattled up their scoring tallies on the way to the final. Northern United Clube A and Te Awamutu B have found the net 33 times between them on their way to Saturday’s final. United, coached by former All White Mike Groom, have been increasing their firepower as the competition progressed. Having accounted for Claudelands Rovers C1 by 3-2 in the opening round, they then knocked out Rovers’ A1 side by 2-0. In the quarter final, United beat Melville United A 4-2 and then they overcame Cambridge A in the semi-final by the same score. Their opponents, Te Awamutu B, coached by Chris Petropolous, have shown excellent cup form and have had to overcome three sides all playing a division higher. In their first round game, Peter Buesnell scored both goals in Te Awamutu’s 2-1 win against Matamata Swifts A. A Kieran Ashburner hat-trick helped the Waipa side dismiss West Hamilton D by 6-0 in the next round. Buesnel netted twice in the side’s 6-2 quarter-final victory against cup holders Eastern City, with other goals from Ross Donaldson, Jamie Bowen, Ashburner and Kai Fennell. In the semi-final, Bowen got a hat-trick and Buesnel snared his third brace in the cup run as Te Awamutu beat Hamilton Wanderers 6-2. One of the features of this cup final is the coming together of one of our region’s oldest clubs and one of its newest. Te Awamutu was formed in 1913 while Northern United is in its first year of its formation following the merger of the Hukunui–Rototuna and Hamilton North football clubs.

Waikato Plate Preview HUNTLY THISTLE’S Robert Wills will be looking to clinch a rare achievement with a goal in the Soccer Shop Waikato Plate final against holders Melville United Old Boys. Wills has scored in all four rounds of the plate, including two hat-tricks, and his goalscoring record will give Thistle every chance against a Melville side that has kept clean sheets in the competition’s quarterfinal and semi-final stage. The two teams meet at Cambridge’s John Kerkhof Park, kicking off at noon, before Northern United Clube A play Te Awamutu B in the final of the Soccer Shop Waikato Cup (2.45pm). The unlucky player in the Huntly squad is former Northern League striker Dean Delaney who scored five times in Thistle’s 8-0 win against Eastern City in the first round of the plate. A broken leg last month finished his season and he’ll miss the final. A hat-trick from Wills saw off Te Awamutu A in the second round, with Huntly winning 3-2. In the quarter-final, Huntly beat Melville United D 5-3 before another Wills hat-trick helped the side to a 5-2 semi-final victory against Northern United Debacles D. Melville’s Old Boys, who play in the Waikato C division, will benefit from the experience of last year’s plate win. This year’s run began with a 9-1 walkover against Cambridge’s D1 side. They struggled in the next round, beating Tokoroa D by 3-2. Since then, solid defence has ensured another finals appearance with a 1-0 win against Claudelands Rovers C1 in the quarters, and a 4-0 win against the Matamata Swifts A team in the semi-final.

New changing rooms at last!

 OUR LONG–AWAITED extensions to the changing rooms at John Kerkhof Park have finally become a reality. After years of fundraising, the six new rooms with showers, toilets and a utilities room were built. Project manager Geoff Wheeler co– ordinated the work of contractors and volunteer work on the site. Builder Ben Latham and his crew laid foundations and built the framework while plumber Steve Barrott volunteered many hours of labour to instal showers, sinks and toilets. Brett Halliday and his digger laid new drains and a soak pit, helping resolve a long– standing drainage issue in the corner of the car park. Left: Concrete pads are laid around the base of the new building.

our new facilities

Work in progress ... our facilities were built in stages but are finally complete.

Put your name on our door  HERE’S AN opportunity to promote your business while helping our club.

The foundations are laid (top) before framework helps the changing rooms take shape (above).

The club is offering naming rights for three to five year terms for the six changing rooms in our new block. This means each changing room will be allocated a sponsor’s name for the duration of the agreement. With the many thousands of visitors to our grounds each year, this presents an excellent opportunity to put your business’ name in front of them. For more details, contact club secretary Josh Easby at cambridgesoccer@gmail.com.

Our club gratefully acknowledges the assistance of grants from the Lottery Grants Board ($47,000) and Transpower’s community grants scheme ($15,000) towards the cost of construction of our changing rooms project.
