Tutors who are experts in their field encourage each student to maximise their potential during academic sessions. Academic sessions at Immerse Education are collaborative, thought-provoking and dynamic. Participants explore theory within practical contexts and discuss the ideas behind the theory whilst debates challenge each participant to embrace new perspectives.

QUEENS’ COLLEGE

CHRIST’S COLLEGE

Queens’ College is one of the oldest and largest colleges of the university, founded in 1448 by Margaret of Anjou, and has some of the most recognisable buildings in Cambridge. The college spans both sides of the river Cam, with the world famous Mathematical Bridge connecting the two sides.

The College is described as an oasis of calm in the heart of Cambridge city, including beautiful herbaceous borders and tranquil gardens laid out over four

The college is noted for producing a plethora of notable personalities, including heads of government and politicians from various countries, religious leaders, astronauts and Oscar nominees. Among its distinguished alumni are Erasmus, Stephen Fry, Abba Eban and T.H. White.

courts.

The college is noted for producing two of Cambridge’s most famous alumni: John Milton, one of the greats of ‘English’ literature, and Charles Darwin, the renowned scientist who published ‘On the Origin of Species’ some thirty years later.

SIDNEY SUSSEX COLLEGE

S T C AT H A R I N E ’ S C O L L E G E

Sidney Sussex is located in the very heart of Cambridge. Founded in 1596 Sidney Sussex is a very wellkept secret – whether its Elizabethan brickwork, charming Cloister Court, the haunting Chapel, exquisite Rococo Hall, medieval cellars or beautiful ancient gardens – they all lie behind a rather self-effacing wall of Roman cement.

St Catharine’s College was founded in 1473 by Robert Woodlark. On 16 August 1475, the hall was incorporated by charter of King Edward IV: “a perpetual college … forever to remain”. The college, nicknamed “Catz”, is located in the historic city-centre of Cambridge, and is notable for its open court (rather than closed quadrangle).

In terms of alumni, Sidney Sussex has educated the likes of Oliver Cromwell, Lord Bilimoria and Carol Vordeman.

Notable alumni from “Catz” include John Addenbrooke, who famously left £4,500 in his will to open up Addenbrookes Hospital (which our medicine participants have backroom guided access to!)

Unique Academic Enrichment Programmes

Cambridge University is internationally renowned for its academic excellence, its beautiful college architecture and its prestigious and rich history. By staying in the inspirational surroundings of the University of Cambridge, participants learn university-level topics whilst experiencing student life.

29

All of our participants are accommodated in their own individual bedrooms on the central University of Cambridge college sites. All rooms are clean and comfortable with high speed wi-fi internet access.

30

Corridors or staircases separate male and female students, and bathrooms are either en-suite or shared between just a few participants of the same gender.

We want participants to feel as comfortable as possible and are more than happy to try to accommodate participants as neighbours if they are attending with friends or family.

GONVILLE & CAIUS COLLEGE

JESUS COLLEGE

Gonville and Caius college was originally founded as Gonville Hall in 1348, before being refounded as Gonville and Caius in 1557. From then on the college continued to grow with new buildings added across the centuries so that it is now the fourth largest college in Cambridge. Women were admitted to the college from 1979. The main college buildings are located in the heart of the city though its buildings can be found on both sides of the river.

Jesus College was founded 1496 by John Alcock, and the cockerel college emblem represents the name of John Alcock himself. The Chapel is the oldest university building in Cambridge still in use, and predates the foundation of the College by 350 years!

Among its most notable alumni are Stephen Hawking, James Chadwick and Francis Crick.

Notable alumni include Thomas Cranmer who was Archbishop of Canterbury during Henry VIII reign.

Frequently Asked Questions

WHO ARE THE ACADEMIC TUTORS? All our tutors are experts in their field and are experienced in teaching undergraduate students. They are current or previous teaching members of top UK universities, predominantly Cambridge and Oxford, and have been carefully selected for their ability to convey their passion and enthusiasm for the complexities of their discipline, in a style that is accessible to all. CAN I STUDY MORE THAN ONE SUBJECT AT ONCE? The purpose of Immerse is to provide in-depth exploration of one discipline through a variety of topics so that participants can get a real sense of what it would be like to study their subject at a more advanced level, we therefore do not offer combined subjects. Participants are able to schedule formal meetings with any of the mentors on their programme, who represent a diverse range of disciplines from Cambridge and Oxford universities, where they can gain insight into a different subject. WILL I BE SHARING A BEDROOM? All participants are accommodated in a single occupancy room within one of the central colleges at Cambridge University. IS IMMERSE EDUCATION PART OF CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY? Immerse Education is not affiliated with Cambridge University. WHAT WILL I DO OUTSIDE OF ACADEMIC SESSIONS? Our academically rigorous summer programmes are carefully balanced with a range of social and cultural opportunities for participants to meet other students from all over the world and form new friendships to last a lifetime. Our ‘Immersed’ alumni list punting and the weekend excursion to Oxford as two of their favourite activities.

34

As well as these scheduled events, participants have free time in which to explore the city of Cambridge, relax with fellow participants, or take some time for private study or to work on their personal project.

IS CAMBRIDGE SAFE? Cambridge is a very safe city with a strong sense of community and low crime rates. The city centre is easy to navigate and all our central colleges are within walking distance of each other. Members of Immerse staff and college personnel are available on site 24/7 and all staff are UK Government Enhanced DBS checked. CCTV is in operation in public areas and participants receive keys to secure their rooms for the duration of the programme. CAN YOU CATER FOR DIETARY REQUIREMENTS? Yes, the on-site catering teams can cater for most medical and religious dietary requirements. Please inform us of any dietary or medical conditions well in advance of the programme so that we can ensure that all relevant staff members are aware. CAN YOU HELP ME GET FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE COLLEGE? We offer a shared airport transfer service for participants travelling from London Heathrow Airport to Cambridge, and back again at the end of the programme. This is a chaperoned service by Immerse Education which will be available to request after enrolment. There are direct trains to Cambridge from London Gatwick and London Stansted airports and we are very happy to provide further advice regarding arrivals and departures from the summer programmes. WHEN IS THE ENROLMENT DEADLINE? Places on our programmes are awarded on a first come, first served basis with class sizes capped at a maximum of 12 participants. We therefore strongly recommend enrolling early in the academic year to avoid disappointment. HOW DO I ENROL?
