Cambridge BMX rider wins fifth world title

Cambridge BMX rider local Leila Walker on her way to a fifth consecutive world title.

By Sophie Iremonger Cambridge local Leila Walker has continued her remarkable run of performances to win a fifth-straight UCI BMX World Championship title in the USA. The Cambridge Middle School student won the 12-year-old girls’ title on the first day of age group racing at the competition last week, held at the Rock Hill BMX Centre in South Carolina. “I think it’s great to be able to come to America and get the win knowing that the competition would be intense,” Leila said. “In America BMX is a very popular sport, there are a lot more riders, so to compete here against them and riders from the rest Photo – Nico van Dartel of the world was really cool.”

Leila’s five-time string of successes started when the championship was held in Auckland back in 2013, where she won the world title for eight-yearolds. Then the following year in the Netherlands Leila won the title for nineyear-olds, followed by the 10-yearold title in Belgium in 2015, and the 11-year-old title in Colombia last year. Leila said this stellar track record meant there was even more pressure to deliver once again this year, so she was rapt to have finished at the top. “I felt relieved after I crossed the line because the expectation for me having won the previous four years was quite high, and to win was the best feeling.” Walker cleared out from the get-go, Continued page 2

winning all three of her qualifying motos, the quarterfinal, semifinal and then dominated the final in a strong field against three American riders, two from Colombia and one each from Peru and the Netherlands. “I thought the final race went well,” said Leila. “Everything came together and overall I thought it was a good lap. Waiting through staging got me a bit nervous, however I got a good gate and the rest of the race felt great.” Now with her fifth title under her belt, it’s fair to say we haven’t seen the last of Leila Walker. Another Cambridge BMX superstar who bears no relation, Sarah Walker also came away from the competition with some remarkable results, and even survived a spectacular crash in a qualifying race. Despite an injury-plagued few years and no racing for two months, Sarah finished as the top Kiwi rider in her division, making her first final in three years at the championships. The 29-year-old had to be content with eighth in a talent-packed final, and believes her performances were such that instead of doubting her future in the sport, she can plot a course to a possible fourth Olympics in Tokyo 2020. Another Cambridge BMX rider, Lily Greenough, was also able to earn a finals trophy, as well as World Championship Plates when she competed in the 10-yearolds division, placing third in the semifinal to finish eighth in the final. Thumbs Up Thumbs Down Thumbs up to everyone who made the finals in the Waipa Business Awards! Thumbs down to the new “C” brand campaign. Whoever has funded it must have more money than sense! Thumbs down to Waipa District Council for contributing $9000 to the unpopular “branding” of Cambridge. Thumbs up to the lovely woman I saw picking up rubbish recently. Thumbs down to the trucks that park on Queen Street overnight, and the lack of parking for the public in town.

The new Cambridge brand created for our growing tourism industry has been quite the topic of the town lately. We asked locals this week what they think of it.

Margaret Gasquoine I thought it was a change, but a great change. “Town of Trees” has been popular and appropriate, so perhaps they should have put a tree in behind the C! But I myself think it has modernised the whole idea of Cambridge, we’ve got to live with the times don’t we!

Keith and Katrina Richards We’re not really keen on that for Cambridge, it deserves a lot more than that. It is very modern looking, but Cambridge isn’t modern, it’s beautifully traditional!

Belinda MacDonald It doesn’t represent our town I don’t think, I’m born-and-bred here so it’s a no from me. It’s a bit of a “last year” sort of approach. If anything it could at least be green or with trees incorporated into it, or something that represents Cambridge more.

Michael Costello It doesn’t really tell the story of Cambridge.

Lee Newlands I just can’t see the relevance of that for Cambridge, it’s not really “Cambridge”. I like the colours though!

FRIDAY AUGUST 4, 2017

A win this week could drive CCH expansion plans forward By Viv Posselt Cambridge Community House Trust (CCH) is waiting to hear if it has succeeded in winning a prize package that could help progress its planned building upgrade. The trust was named late last month as one of three finalists in what is called the Beca Corporate Prize – an arrangement that has partnered Beca Hamilton with Community Waikato to offer a prize package of professional

advisory assistance for a project outlined by the winning organisation. The other two finalists are Colville Community Health Trust and the National Wetland Trust. The winner, to be announced late this week at Community Waikato’s ‘Thriving in the 21st Century’ conference in Hamilton, will receive $3200 worth of advisory services towards their Waikato-based construction project. This

could include assistance from engineering, planning or advisory professionals. Planning for Cambridge Community House Trust’s application for the Beca prize has been ongoing for some time, said Cambridge Community House manager Joanne MacLennan. Thrilled to hear CCH was a finalist, she added: “We’re now waiting with bated breath to hear the outcome of our entry to win the Beca services.

Winning that prize, and with it the expert input from Beca, would be the next best opportunity CCH has towards increasing its capacity to cater for the health and wellbeing of our community.” A win this week will help progress the organisation’s plans to build an extension on the Shakespeare St property from which it operates. In May 2016, the trust purchased its building and additional space at the back of the building

Electric vehicle station opens By Sophie Iremonger A new electric car (EV) station was opened in Cambridge last week, at the corner of Queen and Victoria Streets. It is one of 105 charging stations set to be opened across the country by the end of next year, led by ChargeNet NZ – a goal which CEO Steve West said it was on track to complete.

“I have to say, the assistance of Waipa Networks and Waipa District Council has been second to none,” Mr West said at the opening on Thursday last week. “This has been the easiest installation we’ve ever done.” Waipa District mayor Jim Mylchreest spoke at the opening, before celebrity guest Chelsea Sexton officially cut

the ribbon. Sexton is a leading American EV advocate and star of the award winning documentary, “Who Killed the Electric Car?”. “In decades of working with EVs one of the things that we know has to happen in order to move forward is to give you the opportunity to see and experience them and to give owners and drivers the ability

and confidence to use them when they’re living, working and playing, and a huge part of that is installing infrastructure in those areas, and certainly for New Zealand” Sexton said at the opening. “So I congratulate all of you on the success of this latest charger, one of many that I’ve had the privilege to see.” Mr Mylchreest said he was fully onboard with the idea. “If we’re expecting people to move into electric vehicles without charge sites, that’s just not going to happen,” he said. Britain recently announced a ban on petrol and diesel cars by 2040, but New Zealand transport minister Simon Bridges has said that won’t be happening in New Zealand. The number of electric vehicles in New Zealand is expected to rise over the coming years,. Currently the country has more than 4000 of them. The EV stations have a charge time of about 20-30 minutes to achieve 80 per cent of charge capacity, which can provide a range of 160km.

from the Waipa District Council. It was a move which put the organisation in a better position from which to plan and build either an extension or another building to accommodate growing needs. Founded in New Zealand almost 100 years ago, Beca delivers a variety of consultancy services across a range of market segments, including engineering and planning services, project and cost management, software technology and valuation services. Those applying for the Beca Corporate Prize had to be a Waikato social service organisation with charitable

status, and had to have a project considered by the Beca team to be one with which they could assist. Geoff Gable, infrastructure manager at Beca Hamilton, said there had been some “amazing” entries, and the team found it difficult to choose. The ‘Thriving in the 21st Century’ conference is for social service organisations within the Waikato region, and for those who are involved with the sector. Community Waikato’s chief executive Holly Snape said the conference was “enriched” by opportunities such as the Beca Corporate Prize.

Letters to the editor The “White Cross”

I would like to respond to Nigel Christian’s letter and perhaps offer a more balanced view of Christianity. Ridiculing the Bible (twice in his letter) sets him apart from the mainstream view. A glance at the internet would have shown him that at the 2013 census 48.9 per cent of us declared we were Christian. Christians believe in soul freedom and the right of everyone to believe what they will and as a nation we have embraced all faiths from every nation. To deny our history as a country based on Christian morals, ethics and common law is to be divorced from reality. Cambridge boasts more than 10 churches of various persuasions most of which are charitable trusts working to aid poverty, provide support for the sick and distressed with hundreds of people volunteering to improve social wellbeing. These are core Christian values and principles and should be encouraged not denigrated. The cross is a Christian symbol but consider what it truly stands for: the “fruit” of its spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and self control. The Bible: Galations 5:22. I think the cross demonstrates what our Cambridge is really like. Barrie Hanson * * * *

New “brand” for Cambridge

I have read the ongoing and somewhat heated debate that is going on in social media regarding the new “brand” for Cambridge. At the last count there were almost 400 adverse comments on the Cambridge neighbourhood Facebook website. In summary these are critical of the cost, the non-use of local agencies (or even involving schools in the

 things to do this weekend

project), the real need for rebranding when we already have two strong identifiers and the ambiguous meaning of “let go”. It seems to reflect the feelings of many Cambridge residents. Richard Vaughan Cambridge has always been the town of trees, champions and horses and always will be. The new branding has absolutely no relevance whatsoever to our community. To use a company outside of the Waikato who has no idea of what we are was provocative. So we have a “C” and a “Let Go” banner…which means what? I am the chairperson of the Cambridge Arthritis Support Group and we have committed to try and raise $17,000 to buy a hoist for the new hydrotherapy pool to help arthritis sufferers and those with disabilities get into the pool. The $11,000 that has been spent on the new branding could have more beneficially spent on the new hoist winch, will be of use to our community. To be honest the new branding leaves me speechless! Passive vs Active Investing One of the biggest debates in the investment world is whether ‘active’ investing is better than ‘passive’ investing. The easiest way to think about the difference, is that with active investing, someone is using their brain to make decisions about where to invest your money, whereas with passive investing a computer is making the decisions. A passive investment fund will follow an index (an artificially constructed group of shares or bonds). There are around 7000 different passive investments available globally now. There are two main arguments for passive investments instead of active investments 1. The level of fees charged and 2. Various research projects showing that the average active fund manager does not outperform the index. There are however some issues with these assertions as follows: 1. A pure passive fund will generally underperform the index, as they have brokerage costs and fees and can’t ever match the index. 2. A passive funds fees are not always particularly low. 3. A passive fund will, by design have to buy well performing stocks as their price is rising and sell poor performing stocks, as their price falls. 4. A good active fund manager will regularly and can continuously outperform the benchmark of the index. At Moneyworks, we monitor the performance of a wide range of funds including those that we do recommend to clients, those we don’t recommend, passive, active and those funds that we are looking at for future recommendations. This shows us that the fund managers that we use do continuously consistently out perform over the long term, even though they may not in different short term time periods. From time to time in the short to medium term, different funds may out-perform our recommended funds, but we don’t recommend chopping and changing your fund managers. When you do that you are incurring transactions costs. The best approach is to choose your fund manager based on key attributes and good reasons, and then stick with them.

C for Cambridge – no official changes, says mayor By Sophie Iremonger Waipa District mayor Jim Mylchreest is assuring locals that nothing is changing in terms of the identity and official branding of Cambridge, following a recent announcement from the Cambridge i-SITE (Destination

Cambridge) and Cambridge Chamber of Commerce of a new brand and imagery for Cambridge’s growing tourism industry. The “C – Cambridge” logo was revealed by the two organisations last month as part of the official launch of

The new Cambridge brand common Q&A’s from council Will Council be rebranding Cambridge? No. Will Council be dropping the Home of Champions brand or the Towns of Trees brand? No. Will this new brand replace those brands? No, the Town of Trees is trademarked and will continue to be owned by Waipa District Council. Who ‘owns’ the new brand? The i-SITE and the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce own the brand. It is for them and others to use as they see fit. Why did Council give money to develop the brand? In 2015, Council was approached by the Chamber of Commerce to support the development of imagery and signage which could promote the town on the new expressway. The new signage was just one of many initiatives put in place to help mitigate concerns that the Waikato Expressway would see motorists bypassing the town. Council supports a number of community groups and initiatives, including things like the Waipa Business Awards and Sport Waikato etc. Why was an ‘outside’ company used? The new brand is centred around attracting visitors to Cambridge. Those involved thought using an external agency would provide a fresh perspective on Cambridge from a visitor’s perspective. Who decided on the brand? Cambridge Chamber of Commerce and Cambridge i-SITE decided on the final brand as they are the owners of the brand. It was not a Council decision. Did Council run the community consultation process? No. The Cambridge Chamber of Commerce and i-SITE ran a series of workshops with key stakeholders.

Waipa District Mayor Jim Mylchreest

“Council does not intend to change the Cambridge identity as a ‘Town of Trees’ or the district’s brand ‘Home of Champions’. That would need a major consultation from the community, as it would for Te Awamutu as the ‘Town of Roses’. “I think some of the concern from the public was that Council was changing that, but we’re not. If people want to come up with new ideas that’s great, we don’t want to stifle enthusiasm, but that doesn’t change our existing identity. Nothing has changed here for us.”

Truck tip causes road closure

By Sophie Iremonger A section of State Highway 1 south of Cambridge was closed for several hours on Monday after a truck tipped, causing several volatile chemicals to spill onto the road. Detours were put in place as teams worked to clean up the spill, which came from both the truck’s hydraulic fluid as well as chemicals carried by the truck – a variety of hazardous acids. Six fire crews attended the scene, as well as a Hazmat unit which used a digger and forklift to slowly lift the containers from the truck, which withstood the crash “quite well”. Sand was placed around the crash scene to soak up the fluids. No acid was believed to have made it into any waterways. The truck driver suffered minor injuries.

However, this doesn’t work if your fund manager is consistently under-performing, you need to regularly monitor their progress by comparing them with the whole universe of other like funds.

a new tourism website for Cambridge. The new branding was met with mixed reviews from the town. Some said they liked it, some said they “don’t really care” and others expressed their discontent. The cost of the design process and the selection of an out-of-town company to carry out the work was a disgruntling factor for some, though the main cause for concern was the notion that the new brand didn’t reflect the characteristics for which Cambridge has become known, namely as the “Town of Trees” and “Town of Champions”. Mayor Mylchreest said those sentiments are still very much part of Cambridge’s pride and joy, and the new branding wasn’t an official concept that council would be adopting. “The i-SITE and the Chamber of Commerce own the brand and it’s for them to use as they wish to. It wasn’t a Council decision,” he said. “We won’t be changing the signs into Cambridge or anything like that,” Mylchreest told Cambridge News.

Church teens back after rewarding trip to Thailand A group of teenagers from local churches are back in Cambridge after their successful trip to Thailand. The ‘Teens 4 Thailand Team’ was made up of young people from Cambridge Baptist, Cambridge Elim and Cambridge’s Bridges churches. They spent a fortnight in Thailand last month to participate in programmes that saw them working alongside young Thais in different parts of the country. Cambridge Baptist Church member Delia Edmeades said one of the words most frequently used by team members on their return was ‘bonded’. “It was amazing that in just two weeks of joint activities - visits to the local school, and a twoday visit to the hill-tribe village where several displaced Thai children come from – that there was a strong sense of bonding between team members and the hill-tribe children. “The whole team was able to form lasting friendships with the nine children being raised by a New Zealand couple at Baan Itsara (Freedom Family Home). They were also able to form amazing connections with school kids and

village kids alike, despite language and cultural barriers.” Delia said members of the group had enjoyed participating in English language classes at the school and teaching Thai children how to swim, and described eating, sleeping and worshipping in the village as an “experience not to be forgotten”. “A traditional kiwi-style lolly scramble in both the village with about 75 kids participating, and at the school in Chiang Mai with over 300 kids participating was riotous,” she said. “Everyone felt good about being able to bring a smile to The Cambridge ‘Teens 4 Thailand Team’ with their village hosts. people’s faces, being able to express their love through the giving of simple gifts, and in the provision of an evening meal to a group of semiabandoned children in the city.” Delia said that uppermost in many minds as they left Thailand was the thought “we’ll be back”, and said all those who had gone to Thailand were thankful to local churches and the community for their support.

Submitted by the Cambridge Camera Club The Cambridge Camera Club celebrated its 60th anniversary on Saturday with early club members, Colin Monks, Ron Chamberlain, Davina McDonald and Joan McCathie.

Twelve-year-old Lucy Kibby baked a cake replicating the club’s logo especially for the day. Waipa district mayor Jim Mylchreest attended the event and helped to cut the cake along with our early members.

Lyceum host former Senior Sergeant Submitted by Lyceum House Retired Cambridge Police Officer, Gordon Grantham, was the guest speaker at a recent Lyceum House coffee morning, where he gave a most interesting talk to a good turnout of members. Originally from Gisborne, Gordon graduated in 1970 and served in Wellington for 21 years. In the late 1980s he was a crime prevention officer for Wellington. Preferring

front line duty, he moved to Cambridge in 1990 and has called it home for 27 years. During his time here he has helped to set up several community groups to address youth crime and family violence and in 2016, he received an award for long standing service to the national agricultural Fieldays at Mystery Creek. Fishing, golf and spending more time with his family are on the agenda these days. Lyceum House coffee

mornings are held on the first and third Friday of each month. If you are new to Cambridge and wish to meet other ladies, we would be delighted to welcome you to our clubrooms at 20 Dick St. We also run several “Circles” within the club. These include mahjong, 500 cards, discussion, literary, gardening, croquet, choir and strength and balance exercises. For more information, please phone Christine on 827 6297 or Colleen on 823 4225.

Potluck dinners for July Submitted by the Cambridge Women’s Club Food certainly brings people together. It’s both nourishing for the soul and body. That is one of the reasons that Cambridge Women’s Club gets together over a meal. Just for a change from our regular Clubhouse venue, our July event saw six wonderful members host a small group of ladies, each at their own homes for potluck. Home visits were spread

from as close as Princes St to as far out as Arapuni. How each hostess decided to structure their night, was up to them. We saw some initiate a midwinter theme, with a turkey, trimmings and secret Santa. Whilst others shared their meal over a mix of international dishes with UK, Swedish and Kiwi flavours. This cozy group setting enabled everyone to really get to know each other, as well as share in many a giggle. Sound like your cup of tea

fishing village and harbour in Cornwall. This and other pictures will be hanging at the Painting Place for the Month of August and you are welcome to c0 me and view them. I started enjoying art as a young teenager. With my mother a pianist and music teacher, my father a woodturner, and an aunty an oil painter, the arts were all around me as I grew up. So always in the back of my mind was the idea to find time to get back into painting, at the same time bringing up four children and being a farmer’s wife. I found the Art School Artisan in Matamata. Then moving into counselling work meant I had far less time to paint, but since moving close to Cambridge about 15 years ago I finally made time at the Painting Place. The Painting Place has a good number of very friendly people ready to help with any painting dilemma, and an extensive library. I mainly paint from my own photos taken around New Zealand and beyond. I would love to develop more topics to paint, like birds and portraits. If I could paint a picture like ‘the girl with the pearl earring’ I would be delighted. I have a long way to go for that, but that’s the fun of painting.

Back to back championship win for Hautapu development XV Submitted by Hautapu Sports Club Hautapu Development team vs Otorohanga, semifinal July 22 After a rubbish week weather wise, it was a soggy field to welcome Otorohanga for our semifinal last Saturday. The game started with Hautapu holding a slight territorial advantage, the development lads missed an opportunity to score with a dropped pass but were up 6-0 with two penalties to Ben Engels. Just before the stroke of half time a charge down clearing kick saw Otorohanga close the score up to 6-5 at the break. This was old school rugby at the best, with the forwards battling it out to gain ground control. Otorohanga scored again to take the lead at 10-6. From midway through to the second half the reserves’ presence was immediately felt, with

Andrew Wheelhouse scoring from a forward drive. This was followed shortly after by a great try down the right wing to Christian Rosewarne. Hautapu were out to a 16-10 lead which they held to the final whistle. Player of the day went to Nico Aandewiel at prop, who was inspirational in defence. From there it was off to Marist for the final. Hautapu Development team vs Marist, season final July 29 Marist, with only one loss this season, were going to be a tough opposition on their home turf on Saturday. The Development lads trained exceptionally well and at pregame warm up they were totally focused. This saw them take the game to Marist from the whistle. Our mid field defence was more than solid and our forward exchanges kept Marist behind the advantage line. Every time we

got into Marist’s 22 they gave away a penalty for Ben Engels to kick us into a 9-0 lead at half time. Further domination around the breakdown allowed Hautapu take field position into the wind. Again under a penalty advantage, the forwards drove up to the goal line with Nic Lyall scoring between the posts, converted by Ben Engels. The score was out to 16-0 and another infringement by Marist saw the penalty converted to 19-0. Towards the end of the game we let in two tries to Marist but took out the final 19-12. This was an enormous team effort that saw us dominate most of the play in a very energy sapping final. Thanks to our supporters who turn up every week and our sponsors APL. Well done Hautapu, this is a back to back championship win for us, we look forward to next season. See you there.

Steph Bell-Jenkins was at St Peter’s School on Saturday to watch the local 1st XV take on Napier’s Te Aute College for the first time in its history. St Peter’s won the match by a huge margin as they continue their campaign to win the Central North Island high school rugby competition.

St Peter’s 1st XV crush Te Aute

By Steph Bell-Jenkins St Peter’s School continued their drive to claim the Taine Randell Cup in the Central North Island (CNI) 1st XV rugby competition with a comprehensive victory over Napier’s Te Aute College on Saturday. The home side, playing Te Aute for the first time in the school’s history, crushed the visitors 77-5 with five tries in the first half and eight in the second. St Peter’s team manager Mitch Maclarn said the local side had produced a “pretty clinical” display, with “hard running and some good team tries”. “Kaea Hongara controlled the backline well and Peni Finau was dynamic with the ball,” he said. Maclarn gave credit to Te Aute for “playing the full 75 minutes and making St Peter’s work”. Hongara, who is currently ninth equal in the competition’s most valuable player standings along with teammate Andrew Viane and Te Aute College’s Joshua Onekawa, claimed player of the day. The CNI competition was set up in 2012 to provide a consistently high standard of

rugby for high school players. It started with seven sides and has since grown to include 10 schools, with St Peter’s joining in 2013. The competition provides a launching platform into regional Super Rugby development squads and New Zealand secondary schools and U20 teams. Maclarn said St Peter’s had a great shot at making this year’s final. “The top five teams are pretty close, so if we win next week’s away game against Rathkeale College in Masterton we’ll

definitely make the semifinals.” With just one round left to play, competition for finals spots is fierce. Just three points separate the top five teams, which all have six wins from eight matches. Wesley College leads the table with 31 points, followed by Francis Douglas Memorial College and St Paul’s Collegiate School, both on 30. Feilding High School sits fourth on 29 points and St Peter’s is fifth with 28. Meanwhile, St Peter’s was set to play Te Awamutu College in its first co-educational qualifying match on Tuesday afternoon. CHS junior girls footballers at the top By Bianca Kerkhof, Year 10, Cambridge High School The CHS junior girls’ football team are doing extremely well this year. The Year 9 and 10 girls came together at the start of the season to meet some new people and to play some football, but now they are at the top of their division following their recent 4-1 win against Hamilton Girls High School. The girls haven’t lost any of their games this season, allowing them to move into the top position in no time. Some of the girls have played together before high school and also in their first year at high school, but there are also some girls that haven’t played soccer before but are doing awesome. The more experienced girls have welcomed them with open arms, and have been happy to help them out. The coach, Debbie Goonan, has been a big help and inspiration towards the girls and their playing. The girls really enjoy having Debbie as

their coach and alongside their practices they also have lots of laughs together. The girls love playing together and work really well as a team, though next year some will have to move up to 1st XI or 2nd XI due to their ages. One thing is for sure, all CHS girls’ football teams are sure to be fantastic. Watch out

Captain’s hat-trick inspires big win FIGURE 3.2.1

Cambridge's Patrick Woodlock and Tom Woutersen get the ball in the net but on this occasion, the referee disallows the goal.

By Josh Easby, Cambridge Football Club A hat-trick from skipper Patrick Woodlock inspired Cambridge to an emphatic 8-1 win against Melville United to retain leadership of football’s Loaded WaiBOP Premiership. Cambridge’s ninth win in a row ensured the Reds stayed two points ahead of title chasers Waikato Unicol who scraped home 1-0 against bottomplaced Papamoa. Now the team will get the chance to lift the WaiBOP Federation Challenge Shield this coming weekend when the Reds travel to West Hamilton United on Saturday for a fixture in the Loaded WaiBOP Premiership. The competition works on similar rules to rugby’s Ranfurly Shield, with the holders required to defend the shield when playing at home. It is contestable by all clubs in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty region. Cambridge last held the shield two years ago and the club will be keen to see it back in the trophy cabinet at John Kerkhof Park. The team has already demonstrated a good chance of winning following their 8-1 win against Melville United on Saturday. Playing in bright sunshine at John Kerkhof Park, Cambridge took the lead in the 10th minute when Woodlock scored from the penalty spot. After 35 minutes, Cambridge were awarded a second penalty but Woodlock’s shot was saved. After conferring with his assistant, the referee ruled the goalkeeper had moved off his line and ordered the spot kick to be retaken. Woodlock made no mistake with the second effort. In the dying minutes of the first half, Josh Clarkin put Cambridge 3-0 up, and Woodlock was unlucky not to add his third goal when a shot was well saved, and then scrambled clear. In the second half, Melville’s resistance gradually crumbled, especially when a red card saw the

visitors reduced to 10 men for the last 40 minutes. With 20 minutes to go, Woodlock completed his hat-trick and the floodgates opened. Callum MacLeod scored two almost-identical goals, calmly beating the keeper when cleverly running into space with only the keeper to beat. In the 85th minute, Josh Clarkin made it 7-0. A defensive misunderstanding presented Melville with a consolation goal by Alex Walters. As the game entered added time, Cambridge’s leading goalscorer, Donovan Latham, finally joined the scoresheet with a well-deserved and welltaken goal. In the early game, Cambridge strengthened their claims to the WaiBOP Championship title with a 3-1 win against fifth-placed Tokoroa at John Kerkhof Park. The win gives Cambridge a five-point buffer from the chasing pack led by Waikato Unicol who lost 4-3 at Hamilton Wanderers. Cambridge got off to a poor start, allowing Tokoroa to take an early lead. But striker Adam Brady levelled the scores in the 23rd minute and the sides turned round at 1-1. Cambridge eventually asserted themselves with a 10-minute burst when Blerin Budla (71st minute) and James Cakebread (80th minute) found the net. Cakebread and a Tokoroa player were sent off in the 82nd minute, and the teams played out a tense finish to the match before Cambridge sealed the league points. In the Waikato men’s A division, Cambridge lost 2-1 at Eastern City despite a second half fightback. The Hamilton side went 2-0 up before the break but Cambridge held their own in the second spell and Kurt von Keisenberg grabbed a goal for the visitors as the match went into added time. Cambridge’s division B team lost 1-0 to league leaders Claudelands Rovers in a tight match at John Kerkhof Park.

The result leaves the promoted Cambridge side in fourth place but no longer in the title chase. Instead, the team can still win silverware as they are in the semifinals of the Soccer Shop Waikato Cup on August 12. The Waikato D2 team played out a five-goal thriller at John Kerkhof Park but lost 3-2 to a late goal from Te Aroha Cobras. The match was made notable by Te Aroha goal which must rank as one of the longest strikes seen in Cambridge – a 55m belter from a defender that flew high and into the Cambridge goal on the full. The D1s had a bye. Meanwhile, Cambridge lost their 100% winning record in the WaiBOP Women’s Premier League with a 5-0 loss at Whakatane Town. The result means Cambridge’s title hopes depend on a win against leaders Tauranga City United who won their fourth game in a row. Coach Andrew Taylor said Whakatane took all their chances while Cambridge had

an off-day, being outplayed FIGURE 3.2.3 by the Bay team. One positive was the performance of Hill Homes Player of the Day Irish Harterink. The women’s Division B team lost 8-0 at Mangokino. The U-12 boys WaiBOP Federation team lost 8-2 at Papamoa, after FIGURE 3.3.1 trailing 4-0 at half-time.

Back to grassroots for Magic netballer Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic netball player Alex MacLeod-Smith had a great morning “getting back to grassroots netball” at the Leamington courts from 9.30am-11.30am on Saturday. The 28-year-old was in Cambridge to mix and mingle with local players and spark enthusiasm for the game and the Magic franchise. “We do what we call cluster programmes, so Magic players go out to local netball centres and just hang out, see the young netball talent coming through, sign posters and promote the game,” said MacLeod-Smith, who made her debut for the Magic in the ANZ Premiership this year. “I love coming down and working with the younger girls, doing a few ball drills with them and working with the up-and-comers, it’s really nice.” Cambridge High School students Zoe

Botha and Isobel Taylor were two players who benefitted from the Magic star’s visit, with MacLeod-Smith taking their team through warm up drills, offering tips and advice, and giving feedback on their performance. “She spoke to us on how we can improve our game play and that we should talk more,” Zoe said. “It’s cool having someone like that giving you different perspectives – what they know compared to what we know.” Isobel said the best tips were to get the timing right in defence and to use more verbal communication instead of relying on body Hautapu Hawks goal shoot and Leamington School teacher Ayla Sutherland battles for language. There were auctions of goods donated by local businesses. The bachelors had to promote an allocated lot to the audience after which auctioneer Steve Emile encouraged bidding. FRIDAY AUGUST 4, 2017

Grey goes from strength to strength

Cambridge rider Ashton Grey (Yamaha YZ250FX), picking up the pace.

By Andy McGechan, www. BikesportNZ.com It seems that Waikato's Ashton Grey goes faster and faster every time he throws his leg over a bike. The 17-year-old Yamaha rider from Cambridge finished runner-up to Kiwi crosscountry legend Paul Whibley in the three-hour race in the sandy Woodhill Forest on Sunday – the second round of four in the popular Woodhill Two-man Cross-country Series – making it a Yamaha 1-2 finish to the event. And, despite Manawatu's Whibley (Yamaha YZ450FX) finishing a lap ahead of Grey, after Whibley had arrived at the timing zone just before the clock had ticked onto the three-hour mark, there

really wasn't a lot of distance between the two riders for much of the race. Both men rode the event solo, enduring every minute of the three-hour marathon, leaving the two-rider Waikato pairing of Andrew Charleston and Phillip Goodwright to settle for third overall, crossing the line six minutes behind Grey (Yamaha YZ250FX). "I seem to be getting better each time I ride," said Grey, who also finished equal runner-up to Whibley at the Dirt Guide Cross-country Series, which wrapped up near Tokoroa in July. Grey shared the second overall spot with fellow Yamaha rider Callan May in that series. "I think the main reason for the improvements in

my riding has been that I'm now out in the workforce (employed by one of his sponsors, at Blackwood Yamaha in Cambridge) and I'm not sitting all day in a class room. "It means I'm a lot fitter now and I've lost a lot of weight. I just move around more in my job at Blackwoods, plus I'm watching what I eat," he smiled. "I kept up with Whibley for about half the race on Sunday. Once I pitted for fuel I lost sight of him and my pace dropped off because I couldn't see anyone ahead to chase." Grey's next big assignment is to tackle the annual Tarawera 100 cross-country marathon – a gruelling 100mile (160-kilometre) race –

near Whakatane on Saturday. Grey made his debut at the Tarawera 100 last season,

Support builds for Cambridge Community Gardens By Aaron Ure, Cambridge Community Gardens The gardens have been moving through winter with a great deal of enthusiasm as local Cambridge individuals and groups come on board with varied ways of supporting the vision. None more so than the Cambridge Christmas Festival Society Incorporated. This amazing group of individuals spend their year creating and decorating gifts, novelty goods and decorations to sell at the town hall prior to Christmas. All the profit they make goes back into supplies and donations to the local community for projects of personal and group

importance. This year we were one of the lucky recipients. Through their efforts we were gifted enough to buy a proper variety of replacement and new tools for the garden as well as the provision of materials for finishing the community room project. Our pride and joy being the beautiful lockup shed and an industrial selfpropelled lawn mower. We are so thankful to live in a community where generosity can come in so many forms, and its people are not afraid of a bit of hard work or getting their hands dirty. Thank you Cambridge Christmas Festival Society Incorporated for your yearly efforts and gifts.

Great movie with sensational music. Nun and music teacher extraordinaire Sister Augustine (Céline Bonnier) is a woman with no desire to grovel to any institution, particularly the tottering patriarchy of the Roman Catholic church. Augustine sees in Alice a jagged reflection of her own muted anger, and The Passion of Augustine becomes a story of the two women's parallel rebellions. Veteran Swiss/Canadian director Léa Pool lays out a tale that resists – nearly – every gimmick and cliché that a less-mature filmmaker or funder might have approved and instead presents a polished, thoughtful and boldly intelligent film. This is a warm, witty and genuine story, near-perfectly told.

ATOMIC BLONDE

Based on the book ‘The Coldest City’. November 1989. Communism is collapsing and soon the Berlin Wall will come down with it. But before that happens there is one last bit of cloak & dagger to attend to. Two weeks ago, an undercover MI6 officer was killed in Berlin. He was carrying information from a source in the East, a list that allegedly contains the name of every espionage agent working in Berlin, on all sides. No list was found on his body. Now Lorraine Broughton, an experienced spy with no pre-existing ties to Berlin, has been sent into this powder keg of social unrest, counter-espionage, defections gone bad and secret assassinations to bring back the list and save the lives of the British agents whose identities are on it. One of the most stylish action films to date.
