Easter dummy leaves nurses stranded A tyre slasher targeted district nurses’ car in Cambridge – and left six vehicles out of action.

Tyre technician Matt Yelavich surveys the damage on one of six Waikato DHB cars that were slashed overnight on Sunday.

Police say they are checking on CCTV cameras in Shakespeare St in the hope they will identify the culprit. District nurse Denise Weatherby discovered the vandalism on Easter Monday. All the Waikato DHB staff cars at the Community Service centre had been slashed. The vandal is believed to have used a screwdriver, or even a dart, on a dozen tyres, the driver side of the vehicle in all cases. The fleet is used by Cambridge district nurses to visit patients. “You would think that people would see that they’re Waikato DHB cars,” Denise Weatherby said. “I was going out to see patients and didn’t have a car to go in.” After reporting the incident to Police, she resorted to using her private car to make it to critical appointments and rebooked all other appointments for later in the week. “It’s just really inconvenient, and annoying,” she said. “We’ve had to put patients off until tomorrow, we’ve had to prioritise patients, and try get cars for all our nurses.” Julie Bradbury, charge nurse manager for Waikato DHB community services, said Denise, who manages the Cambridge nurses, was “busy enough as it is” without having to deal with the fallout of the incident. “It’s very disappointing, our nurses are out there on public holidays trying to help patients. It’s very disruptive and stressful.” Cambridge District Nurses confirmed they did not have CCTV footage of the car park. Tyre Traders Cambridge were working to have the cars fixed by the end of Tuesday. “It’s pretty low to do it to the DHB cars, because we’re only helping people,” said Dawn Wirihana, a district nurse in Te Awamutu who used to be based out of the Cambridge office. She said a similar incident had happened at the Cambridge office around 10 years ago, where several DHB cars were slashed.

Now is the hour for Reg Reg Rye is back on track to embark on “the longest hour of my life” tomorrow. The 96-year-old is hoping to set a world record for his age group by riding uninterrupted and unaided for one hour on the track at the Cambridge Avantidrome. Reg is the men’s 95-plus track cycling record holder and medallist in the 2000 metre individual pursuit and 500m time trial, following his efforts at the same venue at the World Masters Games in 2017. He was planning to add to a prestigious UCI World Cycling Hour title to his list of achievements last July when he fell ill. Now back in good health, Reg has been rebuilding his stamina for the record attempt with the assistance of his coach Michael van Enter. He will attempt to cycle as far as he can, and his goal is to complete 100 laps in the hour – a distance of 25km. “At my age there’s is no time recorded

63 Grove Road, Te Pahu

which means whatever I do I will establish the hour record time. So, I guess in reality my goal is really just to keep riding, and keep upright for the hour,” he said. That’s no mean feat at 96 years young. An application has been made to the UCI for dispensation for Reg to use his road bike rather than the standard fixed wheel track cycling bike which would allow him to ride as high on the blue line at the bottom of the track as he can, for safety reasons. The date is set, the UCI officials are booked, and so are family and friends from across the county who will cheer him on from the stands. Avantidrome staff are encouraging residents to watch and cheer him on.

Reg Rye aims to secure a UCI World Cycling Hour title and complete 100 laps of the Avantidrome in an hour.

Fire fighter clocks up 25 years

Twenty-five years as a volunteer firefighter have given Cambridge brigade member Bruce Willis a lot of interesting stories to tell. He’s saved a cat stuck up a tree – and has been likened to a hire-a-hubby. “I still get the feeling that you’re making a bit of a difference, and I still enjoy the comradery of the brigade, that’s probably the best thing about it,” said Bruce, whose 25-year milestone as a volunteer firefighter was celebrated on March 22. “And I guess it’s the feeling that you’re part of something that’s bigger than yourself, you’re making a difference, and you’re helping someone out." He’s seen just about everything, but only recently had his “classic” firefighting experience – rescuing a cat out of a tree. “I just stuck him in my bunker coat and zipped it up, he popped his head out the top, and down we went,” he explained. “We tend to get more call outs these days that some people perhaps would have done themselves back in the day.” As a member of the Cambridge Volunteer Fire Brigade since he moved to the town in 2002, Bruce has seen a lot of change and growth. The number of calls has boomed – up from 206 in 2002 to 345 in 2018. “Everyday something goes on,” he said. “Some days you’ll get nothing, and others it goes off four times.” “It has certainly changed. The boss says sometimes we’re like hire a hubby. Bruce started out joining his hometown fire force in Waihi in 1993, spending four years with the brigade there. It was somewhat of a “deep end” situation, heading off on his first fire call to a petrol tanker on fire. “That was pretty interesting, it was certainly a good introduction to the fire service,” Bruce said. “I’ve been to a few fairly significant call outs that’s for sure.” Bruce moved to Rotorua in 1997, and after a six-month hiatus from the job he joined the Ngongotaha fire brigade. Another five years later he moved to Cambridge and has been with the brigade ever since. He chuckles, recalling how some of the other Cambridge brigade members refer to him as a “social member” for “only” making about 60 per cent of all call outs, as some of the firefighters somehow making 80 or 90 percent of the call outs. “And I’ll say to them, ‘hey, I’m here for the big ones!’ And it does turn out that way, the big ones I manage to get to. And there’s been some fairly significant ones. The ones that stand out are unfortunately either really big or really bad, but we’ve had the odd funny, hard-case sort of a call where we’ve used some unorthodox ways to get a result. “Probably the thing that stands out to me the most over my time (as a firefighter) is the three brigades I’ve been involved with, that’s the best part, the three groups of likeminded people that I’ve been a part of.” But on top of that, Bruce said he was most fortunate for his supportive family –wife, Nikki, who helps get him out the door on a cold morning call out, and his two boys, Ben, 14, and Lochlan, 10, who are both keen to follow in their dad’s footsteps and join the fire force one day. “They deal with that more than I do,” he said, referring to the responsibility of rushing out the door at a moment’s

notice. “You do miss out on a few family dinners, there are a lot of times where I’ve just sat down to dinner and off it goes. It’s funny, it never rings at a good time, like in the middle of an argument!” he laughed.

the force 25 years ago, the 47-year-old sales representative said: “stay as keen as you can, get involved in everything, and make sure you’ve got someone pushing you out the door on a cold and frosty morning when you don’t want to go.”

Asked advice he would give himself starting out infor 25 years. Bruce Williswhat has now been with the Cambridge Volunteer Fire Brigade

Anzac memories run deep for local

By Viv Posselt

As the country marks Anzac Day this week, Cambridge man John Andersen knows that such commemorations will always have a special significance for him. Among the many photographs that breathe life into his quiet Leamington lounge room are two very old images. One is of his father and his two uncles – three handsome young men pictured in the sandy coloured uniform of the 4th Waikato Mounted Rifles during their WW1 service in Egypt. Another less distinct photograph shows John’s father, George, seated on his horse outside the ‘barracks’ – or stables – during those years of service. Fate decreed that all three Andersen brothers would come home, but none of them spoke of their experiences. They kept it all inside them,” John said. It was through the stories of his aunt’s husband that John learned of the atrocities inflicted upon soldiers captured during The Great War. They are stories that still bring him close to tears. “The prisoners of war were deliberately starved to death,” he said. “The enemy didn’t shoot them. Rather than get it over with quick, they made them die a slow death through starvation. It was inhumane. My aunt’s husband was skeletal, just skin and bone when he was rescued, he was too weak to walk. He had been among the kindest of men, but he was changed after that … they all were.” John is an ardent lover of horses, and the fate of the animals sent with the soldiers to far-flung theatres of war also brings an emotional response.

“At the end of it, the soldiers who came home had to leave their horses behind. They had to either release them or dispatch them themselves. It must have been horrible. They had been through so much together … they had developed such a deep bond with those animals. It would have been devastating to know they couldn’t bring them home with them due to the risk of importing disease into New Zealand. Those poor horses.” The lives of the Andersen family intersected with war on other occasions too, and they have marked Anzac Day for years. George went on to serve in World War Two as a cook instructor, while some of John’s brothers also did their time, two of them with J Force. John would have joined them, but a degree of deafness in one ear meant he failed the medical. In peacetime, the family went on to make a name for itself in horseracing, boxing and league, while John went on to marry Elaine, a girl he met at school and subsequently sang with. The couple settled first in Hamilton, then built their own home in Cambridge’s Leamington. Elaine passed on a while ago, leaving John with warm memories of a beautiful and kind girl with “the voice of an angel”. John also became known to Cambridge readers late last year for his extraordinary collection of “old things” which includes a cross section of wartime memorabilia. The eclectic mix of old tools, bottles and a myriad of other items fills one room of his home, part of his garage and a pile of boxes still to be sorted. “I’ve been collecting for over 60 years,” he said, “really just because I like old things John Andersen’s father George (left) and his two uncles, Arthur and Ted, served in Egypt with the 4th Waikato and the stories they tell.” Mounted Rifles during World War One.

No ordinary book giveaway

Nicky Webber was amongst the many Cambridge residents paying their respects during the Anzac remembrance service at the Cambridge Town Hall this week. The Tamahere resident is now a published author, with her latest book No Ordinary Man out in January. Cambridge News has two signed copies of the book to give away. It details the life of no ordinary man in the Anzac core, one which lived a secret double life both during World War 2 and afterwards. “It’s an intriguing, fascinating, interesting story,” said Nicky, who spent two years writing the book. “The story is really about acceptance of people that are different. “I want the reader when they start reading it to see that he’s a great guy,

he’s a hero, and then very slowly, you see hints as the story develops, that he’s living this secret life. “Some people think it’s just another Anzac story, but then when they read it they can’t put it down.” Having grown up with parents who survived World War 2 as children in Europe, as well as having veterans in the family, Nicky grew up hearing quite a few war stories. But in this war story, she had to change the main character’s name, and a few crucial details to keep his identity a secret. His own daughter doesn’t know his true “self”, Nicky learned the story from his niece, as well as his own scribbled notes, to piece together what she calls a wellresearched “creative non-fiction” piece.

“It’s a fascinating story,” said Nicky, adding that she felt the pressure to get it right. “I think now is the best time to share his story, no publisher would have touched it decades ago,” she said. “It probably would have been banned!” • To win a signed copy of No Ordinary Man, send your full name and contact number to: sophie@cambridgenews.nz no later than 9am, Tuesday April 30. • Congratulations to Laurie Gatfield and Dylan Woodhouse who each won a copy of our recent giveaway – James Caffin’s book Partisan – the incredible true story of a New Zealand soldier behind enemy lines.

National date in Timaru for cyclists

Five of the six Cambridge cyclists who won their divisions at the Waikato Bay of Plenty Road Cycling Champs held in Tokoroa earlier this month will be in action again at the nationals this weekend. Georgia Perry won the Elite Women’s category, Alex Heaney won the Elite Men, Jack Edwards finished first in the under 19 division and Blair Taylor won the Masters’ 1 category. Jim McMurray also won the Masters’ 55–59 category, and Eltje Malzbender won her division for tricycle paracycling. It’s a promising start for the Georgia, Jack, Jim and Eltje, who will all be competing at

the Age Group Road and Time Trial National Championships in Timaru this weekend. Josh Lane, who finished second behind Jack Edwards in the under 19 regional race last weekend, will also be competing. Eltje, who has overcome all odds in the last three years recovering from a serious head injury, said she was really looking forward to the national champs thanks to a lighter rear axle which she hopes should improve her performance. Artists band together Dancers encouraging for exhibition locals to join It has been practiced in Cambridge for the last sixty years. Carol Lennon, now a member of the club committee, said friendship, encouragement and enthusiasm were dished out in spades when she joined the club. “I came to Cambridge five years ago to start a new direction in my life and, after a chance conversation; I went along to an evening of Scottish country dancing at the local club. Little did I know where this would lead me. “A state of confusion would aptly describe my beginning weeks as I came to grips with the dance patterns and dance techniques and a whole range

of dance formations. But friendship, encouragement and enthusiasm were dished out in bucket loads by all the club members. While I will never be perfect, no one seems to mind. Dancing is certainly an unexpected and great physical therapy for the mind and wellbeing. “As my experience and confidence gained I headed out to ceilidhs, socials and balls. I love that both young and old come together to dance.” The group meets every Wednesday at 7.30pm in the St Andrews Church Hall. To find out more, phone Carol on 827 8260 or email CambridgeSCD@yahoo.co.nz.

Cambridge’s Scottish country dancers were on display during the Cambridge Autumn Festival last month.

Cambridge artists Henriette Mathiesen, Terry White, Susan Rickard (standing), Cara Fotofili (sitting) and John White will collectively display around 80 of their paintings at the upcoming exhibition running May 3 -5.

Members of Cambridge’s Scottish Country Dance club are encouraging locals to get involved in the group, which meets every Wednesday evening inside the St Andrews Church Hall. “If you’d enjoy some stimulation, skill development and friendship, why not take up the challenge,” said Carol Lennon, who joined the club in 2014. Cambridge’s Scottish Country Dancing holds two workshops each year for new dancers, with the next one coming up on Wednesday, May 8. “Comfortable clothing and flat shoes are all that is required to get started,” Carol said. Some locals will have seen the dance in action during the Cambridge Autumn Festival last month, when Scottish country dancers of all ages, including Carol herself, joined the street carnival celebrations and twirling their tartans. History and tradition of Scottish country dance dates back through the centuries, practiced in Scottish palaces and village halls to the music of fiddles and accordions.

A team of Cambridge artists are banding together to form their own exhibition. Henriette Mathiesen, a hairdresser in Cambridge, started out painting as a hobby. The paintings sparked conversation after hanging a few up in her salon, and eventually the idea formed to share the work of Cambridge’s budding artists. “We were all a bit shy and anxious about doing much with our art so I suggested we all pool together our work and have our own exhibition,” said Henriette. “We have been talking about it for over a year!” The exhibition is set for May 3-5, with a special opening night on Friday, May 3.

Instant fine for rubbish dumper A Cambridge resident who dumped his trash – including dozens of empty beer bottles and a plastic Christmas tree has been handed an instant $400 fine by the Waipā District Council. Fly dumping is common in the district – the Council has received 93 illegal dumping complaints this financial year and there were 120 in 2017–2018. Waipā District Council’s contractor Fibre Networks found a large pile of trash, including beer and wine bottles, plastic and a fake Christmas tree, dropped down the side of the road on Parallel Road, Monavale last week. Contracting staff who reported the issue also cleaned up the mess. An investigation led Council staff to identifying middleaged Cambridge man.

Mr Danby said Council received many of its tip offs from members of the public eager to help tackle the issue. “We are heavily reliant on the public being vigilant. We need suspicious behaviour reported quickly and need key information like car registrations and descriptions supplied.” He encouraged people to report the matter to the council. “Please don’t go on social media and accuse people. Come to us and let us deal with it.” Fly tipping is a nation-wide problem.

Complaints about illegal dumping has jumped nearly 50 per cent in the Whanganui District over the last 18 months in the wake of dump fees increasing, the Whanganui District Council was told earlier this month. There were 314 complaints about fly tipping in 2018, up from 221 the previous year in Whanganui. If you want spot fly tipping, or find dumped rubbish, you can call 0800 WAIPĀDC (0800 924 723) to speak to the Council’s customer support team.

‘People are sick of this problem’ – Enforcement officer Ken Danby. When confronted by an enforcement officer, the man admitted responsibility and said he had been under stress, a statement released by the Council said. Enforcement officer Ken Danby said illegal rubbish dumping caused major problems. “It is unsightly and it also attracts rats and is a health and safety risk because of what is dumped; food waste, sharp objects, dirty nappies – which is a favourite one. It’s also time consuming for Council staff and costly to clear and it’s ratepayers who bear the cost.” The enforcement comes as part of a Council crack down on illegal dumping. “This has been an ongoing problem for a long time and Council is determined to find and fine offenders. If we have sufficient evidence, we won’t hesitate to take action. People are sick of this problem.”

This man who left this mess for others to clean up was fined $400.

FRIDAY APRIL 26, 2019

Lincoln Falls set for Te Rapa A comfortable victory at the Waverley trials earlier this month has confirmed a start in Saturday’s Gr.3 Inglis Sales Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) for promising threeyear-old Lincoln Falls. The Lisa Latta-trained galloper had a short break after finishing unplaced in the Gr.1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) at Ellerslie last month. The Dundeel gelding pleased Latta with his trial performance where he sat comfortably outside the speed throughout over 1000m in open company before doing just enough to head off stablemate Almo Street at the finish. “He trialled up nicely at Waverley and has done well since then,” Latta said. “We tipped him out for a few days

after the Derby and had him gelded while he was out. He could be a little wayward in his races and I think the gelding will help with that. “He will go up to Te Rapa for the Breeders’ Stakes for his first run back.” Latta will also head north with consistent mare China Star who will tackle the Gr.2 Travis Stakes (2000m), a race that saw her finish runner-up to Our Abbadean last year. Latta also reported that a number of her stable stars were enjoying time off before commencing preparations for spring racing, however she has lost the services of consistent open class performer, Five To Midnight. “Sentimental Miss, Secret Allure and Sir Nate are all in the paddock now and won’t come back in for

another month or so,” she said. “They all did a really good job this season and I think there is more in store for them in their next campaigns. “Five To Midnight won’t be there as he has left my stable and will do his future racing with Patrick Payne in Melbourne.” Raced by Kamada Racing principal, Kevin Pratt, Five To Midnight finished runner-up in the Gr.1 Auckland Cup (3200m) in his last run for Latta, a position he had filled in the 2018 edition of the event. The six-year-old won 9 races from 43 starts in New Zealand including the Gr.3 Waikato Gold Cup (2400m), the Listed Hawke’s Bay Gold Cup (2200m) and Listed Feilding Gold Cup (2100m). – NZ Racing Desk

Lincoln Falls will race as a gelding for the first time tomorrow.

Easter double for Cambridge trainer Bell Cambridge trainer John Bell enjoyed a top Easter Monday at Rotorua where he produced a winning double. Bell took out the feature on the programme with under-rated galloper Yorkshire Dales who triumphed over 1215m in open company. The seven-year-old gelding was having his first run since closing up his last campaign with a tidy effort for fifth in the Gr.2 Rich Hill Mile (1600m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. Allowed to find his feet during the early stages by rider Craig Grylls, Yorkshire Dales travelled up strongly approaching the home bend before dashing to the front shortly after

straightening. Grylls kept his charge up to the mark as they lasted to score by a neck from Woodville visitor Casaquinman with race favourite Te Toro Pearl in third. “He’s a happy horse who is going very very well and you will see a lot more of him,” Bell said. “We’re going to look after him and pick our races one at a time. He looks like he has come through it quite well and is very fit.” Yorkshire Dales did his early racing in England where he was successful in two of his five starts before being sold to Hong Kong where he failed to fire in his only run before being transferred to Bell’s stable where he has now won four of his 10 New

Zealand starts. One race earlier the Bell-trained Helena Baby indicated he could be in for a profitable winter when he cleared maiden ranks in effortless fashion over 1400m. Runner-up in his first two starts, the Guillotine four-year-old never gave his race rivals a look-in as he led all the way in the hands of rider Donavan Mansour. Allowed his head with 500m to run, Helena Baby shot clear with Mansour easing him down over the final 100m to score by a conservative five lengths at the line. Bell had earlier expressed some concerns about the Heavy10 track for his charge, but those fears proved unfounded as Helena

Baby relished the underfoot conditions. “He’s a nice horse who is going to go right through the grades,” Bell said. Mansour echoed those sentiments as he made his way back to winner’s enclosure. “He’s a nice horse who I think 1400m-1600m is his game,” he said. “It’s always good when they travel like that. I galloped him on a wet track before and he loved it so I knew he would like it today.” Bred by Windsor Park Stud, Helena Baby is a half-brother to useful performer Hover and dual Singapore winner, Muscular Captain. – NZ Racing Desk

Cambridge BMX riders Rico D’Anvers and Bennett Greenough contested a tight men’s Superclass final at the BMX NZ National Championships in Auckland over Easter weekend. D’Anvers poured on the power on the last straight to come from behind to win. Greenough blasted out of the start gate and led to the last corner, only to be run down by D’Anvers and fellow Waikato rider Cooper Merito in second, to finish third. The woman’s Superclass final was won by Zoe Fleming, another Cambridge rider who had just returned from an injury-enforced break from the

sport. Meanwhile six-time world champion Leila Walker, and Bennet’s brother Jack Greenough, both also from the Cambridge BMX Club, took out the 12-14 years girls and boys superclasses respectively. Both one their age group titles as well. More than 850 riders from throughout the country from under-5 years to over 60 years took part in the three-day championships. Young Cambridge riders Meg Cannon and Oscar Newnham won the nine-year-old girls and boys titles respectively, whist Logan Hall won the 15-year-old boys and world champion

Tim Ferguson took out the men’s 35 to 39 years class, and won the BMX NZ Top Sportsman Award. Leila Walker won the BMX NZ Top Female Achiever Award, and the Cambridge BMX Club won the BMX NZ Pocock Trophy, and the Masters Cycle Award for the most top-eight riders at the competition. Lilly Greenough from the Cambridge club was the top qualifier in the Mighty 11s selection trial, being made captain of the four-person team of 11-year-old girls which will compete in Australia in June.

FRIDAY APRIL 26, 2019

Yearbury second, fair-weather friend stars

Cambridge rider Dylan Yearbury finished fourth in the third round of the New Zealand Enduro Championships near Tokoroa over Easter. It meant he remained second overall in the standings. Bay of Plenty's Ben Townley is no regular on the championship scene, but he certainly made an Easter impact in the seven round Yamahasponsored series. New Zealand's best dirt bike riders were enticed to South Waikato forestry land on Saturday, and the 34-year-old former motocross world champion from Tauranga was among those keen

to hit the steep and rocky, tree root-littered trails at as close to fullthrottle as they dared. Sent on his way at minute 15, the last rider away on the premier AA course, Townley soon had his Yamaha WR450F up to pace and carving a path towards the front. In the end, after five hours of brutal off-road racing, Townley had clawed his way up the leader board to finish the day a remarkable third overall, the event won overall by Thames-based enduro specialist and fellow Kiwi international Chris Birch, with Helensville's young riding star Tom Buxton claiming the runner-up spot.

Ben Townley enjoyed a his rare enduro outing on Saturday. Photo by Andy McGechan, BikesportNZ.com

Cambridge's Yearbury and Tokoroa's Jake Wightman rounded out the top five riders on the AA course on Saturday. "I like race enduros every now and again. This is probably my one for the year. I just don't come out and ride these if it's muddy," Townley laughed. "The bike was awesome, a real weapon. I just put some Pirelli tyres on it, some hand guards from Yamaha and off I went. I absolutely loved it. "I mucked up a couple of special tests, and I wrecked my gear peg too, but no real moments other than that. "Next thing for me is to do the last round of the cross-country nationals near Taupo, but I'm not a fan of racing in the winter now. I'm a fair-weather rider." In terms of the championship, Buxton leads by just four points from Yearbury, with Whanganui's Seth Reardon – who finished sixth on Saturday – third overall for the series to date, 18 points behind Yearbury. However, with Buxton and Yearbury both now heading away to events in Romania and Austria, it puts Yamaha hero Reardon in a good position to take over the series lead if he performs well again at round four, near Martinborough on June 9. Reardon (Yamaha YZ250FX) has been performing well in two separate motorcycling codes this season.

Reardon and Raglan's Brandon Given currently share second spot overall in the parallel-but-separate New Zealand Cross-country Championships after three of four round and that battle will go down to the wire at the final round near

Taupo on May 25. Meanwhile, round three of the Yamaha New Zealand Enduro Championships is set for Martinborough on June 9. By Andy McGechan (abridged), BikesportNZ.com.

Flat-out attack on TT champs

Cambridge’s multi-time former national motocross champion Mike Cotter will be a rider to watch out for at the upcoming 2019 New Zealand Miniature TT Championships at Taupiri, May 4 – 5. He’ll be racing in the event alongside former Kiwi motocross Grand Prix campaigner Damien King, also from Cambridge, and Cambridge’s Jared Hannon, amongst the country’s stars of motocross, cross-country, enduro and road racing, hitting eyewatering speeds at full throttle as they chase national glory. TT racing is like superbike racing on soil instead of tarmac – the racing is off-road and competitors use dirt bikes or quad bikes, but, unlike motocross, there are no steep hills or skyward launch ramps to slow things down. The champs will take place at 456 Rutherfurd Road, Taupiri, a farm made available by land

Water skier a national champion

Luke Runciman has returned from the New Zealand Water Ski Nationals as the sub junior slalom champion. It follows his brilliant efforts in the Wakeboarding Nationals earlier this month, where he won the under ten-year-old division. It means he’s won both a national water-skiing title and national wakeboarding title in a single year – in fact in a single month. Luke also placed second in the tricks division and overall for his age group at the competition held in Auckland over Easter weekend. His brother Josh also placed fourth in the sub junior division for trick skiing, in what was his first ever national competition. Their older brother Joel competed in the older junior boys division, placing seventh overall.

Grant Cawley

Grant Cawley joined Cooney Law earlier this year to help meet the needs of the growing law practice. Cooney Law appealed due to its solid reputation. The town of Cambridge was also a drawcard. “It’s a nice place to live,” says the former Hamiltonian who graduated from the University of Waikato with first class honours and was admitted to the bar in 2015. Grant’s specialty areas are commercial and property law. He is especially drawn towards conveyancing due to its overall positivity. “Clients are either buying or selling, and are generally quite excited about the process.” He enjoys Cooney Law’s team culture and the firm’s client-focused approach. “Providing the best

service to clients is important to us,” Grant says. Established in 1986, the firm is well-known in Cambridge. This year partner, Jocelyn Cooney QSM, an honorary solicitor of a number of community and charitable organisations, marks her 45th year in practice. 22 Dick Street, Cambridge 3434 Phone: (07) 823 1555 Fax: (07) 823 2442 Email: admin@cooneylaw.co.nz

Ivan McIntosh

Vosper Law has pleasure in introducing Ivan McIntosh, who joined the firm last October as a consultant specialising in complex subdivision & other land issues, trust, estate, company and business matters. Ivan brings 25 years of experience in law, working for a major firm in Auckland before establishing and operating a two partner legal practice for the last twelve years. Prior to that Ivan was in-house counsel working on major Auckland property developments for a listed property trust. But, having received his schooling at Whangarei Boys High, Ivan was never keen on living in Auckland for good and last year looked for an opportunity to get back to a country town. Cambridge beckoned, especially considering that Ivan’s wife Joanna (nee Hicks) was born and bred on the slopes of Maungatautari. Add the desire to give a more town and country lifestyle to their 18 month old son Harry, and the decision was obvious. Together with senior associate Vernon Woodhams, our well known principal Amanda Vosper, and our team of legal executives and support staff, Ivan forms part of a formidable legal partnership that can take care of all your legal needs. FRIDAY APRIL 26, 2019

Victory for Hautapu at Melville Premier Good Friday saw a very closely fought match between two evenly matched Hautapu and Melville premier teams at Melville Park, where Hautapu emerged as victor 29 - 24. Having led from very early in the match Hautapu found themselves down 24 to 22 with 10 minutes remaining, but showed some excellent control and determination to get back on attack and score the winning try, also earning themselves a bonus point. Back in front Hautapu was too solid in defence to relinquish this lead and held on well for the win. This maintains the team’s undefeated season and place at the top of the points table. While this was an excellent team effort

from all 22 on the day, there were some great individual touches by Bradley Slater, Mike Tomsett and Mitch Jacobsen in the forwards, and Keaton Nells and Kurt Heatherley in the backs. Development Hautapu were hosted by Melville with a positive start by Hautapu, the forwards and backs combining well to keep the home side camped in their half. Opportunities were there to put points on the board, but they were missed through errors and judgement. Melville hit back with a penalty and try after 30 minutes. Hautapu came back at Melville but the hosts ran in two converted tries, with the halftime score 24-0.

Second half, Hautapu regathered with strong runs up the middle. As the game progressed Melville could not be contained and ran in more tries. This young Hautapu team played with a

FRIDAY APRIL 26, 2019

Reds among early title pacemakers Earlier, it was Blair who gave Cambridge a 1-0 lead when he nodded home a classic poacher’s goal from close in after 13 minutes of the game, played in warm sunshine. The lead didn’t last long as Matias Miranda weaved through the Cambridge midfield and shot the equaliser after 15 minutes. For the rest of the first half, the sides traded attacks and both sides were guilty of niggly fouls. Catimba found themselves reduced to 10 players in the 42nd minute when referee Ashley Wilson red-carded Catimba’s Jorge Saint-Germes for a crude challenge on Cambridge goalkeeper Patrick Steele. Despite their numerical advantage, Cambridge found it difficult to break down a well-organised Catimba in the second half and the visitors took the lead in the 64th minute through Clement Chesse. For the remaining half-hour, Catimba defended gamely, repelling repeated Cambridge attacks and frustrating the home side and their supporters. But it was Blair who had the final say in the result, his hat-trick providing Cambridge with a win that keeps the side in touch with the divisional leaders, and maintains the Reds’ unbeaten start to the season In the curtain-raiser game, a youthful Cambridge reserves side comfortably beat Catimba’s second string 3-0. Cambridge always looked the fitter and better-drilled side as they methodically earned their win in sunny conditions. Alex Mukaka, playing a midfield role for this game, put the home side ahead after 15 minutes with his third goal of the season. Cambridge had the majority of play for the rest of the half and deservedly doubled

By Josh Easby, Cambridge Football Club

Cambridge are among the early pacesetters to challenge for football’s Northern League second division title. With a quarter of their programme completed, the Reds are showing they have the talent – and a new-found resilience – that suggests they can be title contenders when the competition finishes in September. This week sees the Reds complete a string of three matches in eight days. On Good Friday, the team rescued an amazing win by scoring twice deep in added time to overcome league newcomers Greenhithe Catimba 3-2. The Reds travelled to Ngongotaha for an ANZAC Day fixture and will host Auckland club Unimount Bohemian Celtic at John Kerkhof Park this Saturday. In the game against Catimba, Cambridge were trailing 2-1 when the 90 minutes was up. Desperate, the Reds threw everyone forward in a last-ditch effort at John Kerkhof Park. With five minutes of added time played, striker Dylan Blair looped a header over Catimba’s goalkeeper Camilo Cabezas and the Auckland side’s defenders could not stop the ball from trickling across the goal-line. Tied 2-2, the Reds put together another attack. Winger Callum MacLeod – who had tormented Catimba all game – drove hard to the byline and crossed for Blair to smash home the ball for the winner. The goal completed a hat-trick for 21-year-old Blair and clinched a win for Cambridge that moments earlier had seemed unlikely, if not impossible.

their lead in the 45th minute when striker Andrew Taylor headed home from five metres out. The highlight of the second spell was a spectacular goal, struck from 25 metres by Johnny Sanchez, that gave Cambridge an unassailable 3-0 lead in the 53rd minute. Cambridge were content to see out the match, controlling most of the possession, and were delighted with their clean sheet after conceding six goals in each of their past two outings. Cambridge’s third team lost 2-0 in the WaiBOP Championship to a youthful

Hamilton Wanderers at John Kerkhof Park on Saturday. The home side applied early pressure and could have gone ahead when Jason Szabo found the net only to have his effort ruled offside. Wanderers scored late in the half and then added another after the interval to take the league points Cambridge D2s beat Northern United’s Seniles 4-1 in Waikato Division 4. Cambridge scorers were Chris Hill (2), Andy Thomas and Mariano Castellon. The club’s women’s and youth teams had breaks over Easter.

Young athlete amongst NZ’s best A Cambridge student has smashed the North Island Secondary School athletics record for the under 16 400m sprint, running it in 54.69 seconds – a rare achievement for high school runners. Her outstanding time now ranks higher than some of New Zealand’s best female runners, including Olympic and Commonwealth Games athletes. Annalies Kalma pulled off the recordsetting time during the North Island Secondary Schools Championships in

Tauranga earlier this month, competing with the Waikato Bay of Plenty team. She also won intermediate girls 200m sprint. She was one of four Cambridge students to earn six North Island titles at the event. Charli Miller won the 800m and 1500m senior girls finals, and Abbey Glover-Esplin won the senior girls 100m hurdles. Liz McLean was also part of the team that won the 4 x 100m intermediate girls relay.

Age is no barrier for bridge players

One of the oldest members of the Cambridge Bridge Club, Saty Satyanand, along with his partner Math Verhaegh, competed at a local tournament in Hamilton last weekend. Up against players from across the Waikato - Bays region, they came first in the morning session achieving 67%. At the end of the tournament they came in second overall, just being pipped by the Hamilton winners. This was a special restricted event where top class players play with lower grade members encouraging them and giving advice. It was a well organised tournament directed by Dallas Dagg from Hamilton, and Michael Neels from Cambridge scoring. The Hamilton club provided delicious all-day refreshments and a delightful lunch. Saty’s four score and ten years proves that age is no barrier to success at the bridge table. Young or old, bridge is a lifetime hobby. Te Akau tramp well worth it A small group of 10 people including two new members just filled two cars for our recent tramp at Te Akau on April 14. The long drive was well worth it, through beautiful areas that we hadn’t seen before, past the inland areas of the Raglan bays, native forest areas and vast rock formations. We drove through Te Akau and parked just past a bridge where we set up for the tramp, which was really quite easy – over high rock formations and along the river with beach views all the way, then along the beach for a few kilometres until we found the best place for lunch. After lunch we returned along the same route back to the cars. The weather was just right, apart from a small shower as we got to the beach. Overall it was a very relaxing tramp which we all greatly enjoyed, and well worth doing. Our next tramp is at Rotorua on Sunday April 28. For information please contact Liz Sadler, 021 119 0685. FRI / MON / TUE: 3.55PM ~ SAT: 1.10PM Adrift in space with no food or water, Tony Stark sends a message to Pepper Potts as his oxygen supply starts to dwindle. Meanwhile, the remaining Avengers (Thor, Black Widow, Captain America and Bruce Banner) must figure out a way to bring back their vanquished allies for an epic showdown with Thanos, the evil demigod who decimated the planet and the universe. The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand.

In 1970s Los Angeles, the legendary ghost La Llorona is stalking the night -- and the children. Ignoring the eerie warning of a troubled mother, a social worker and her own kids are drawn into a frightening supernatural realm. Their only hope of surviving La Llorona's deadly wrath is a disillusioned priest who practices mysticism to keep evil at bay. This movie is enough to make you have a nightmare; good directing making horror and tension work together perfectly. Bravo.
