FRIDAY FEBRUARY 2, 2018

Letters to the editor

Cambridge newsroom update Well I’m not quite sure where January went, but here we are in February already. This week we have a new real estate index of open homes in Cambridge, so if you are looking for a new house or just want to keep up with the local market, check it out. After putting it in the paper last week, I decided to take the kids out to the open day at the Waitakaruru Arboretum and Sculpture Park on Scotsman Valley Rd, joining around 600 other people who went over the course of the long weekend. With one kid apparently allergic to the great outdoors and the other one taking every opportunity to try and photo-bomb his sister’s photographic efforts, it was not what you might call a relaxing outing. There was the usual chorus of “are we there yet?” and “can we go back to the car?”, but by the end they both agreed that it was a pretty cool place to go. They even forgave me for momentarily convincing them that a pile of rocks was a sculpture called Pile of Rocks. The aboretum is a wee gem right on our doorstep, and the proprietors are urging the public to get behind them to ensure it continues. There’s another free open day on Waitangi Day, so make sure you go and have a look if you haven’t already. There might even be native birdsong if everyone would just be quiet, who knows. Have a great week, everyone – we hope you enjoy your paper, we’ve had a lot of fun bringing it to you. Claire Castle, Editor

Street View:

Dear Mr Locke, I was saddened to read of your most unhappy experience regarding the appalling behaviour of the two youths you had the misfortune to come across. I can just imagine how they left you feeling. (Cambridge News, January 26.) However a little good news to make you feel more positive about the majority of the kids/youths of Cambridge. For the past four years I have been living in Cambridge working as a volunteer amongst many children of all ages and have nothing but praise for the helpfulness and respect I have always been shown. They make me happy, they Dear Editor, The Transom family would like to thank the Cambridge community for the donations made to help us cover the costs of laser treatments which aren’t funded by the DHB as per the article in Cambridge News on December 22 – Clock ticking for Estelle. We have been asked for an alternative way to make payments, as some people are not online. Donations can be deposited into the fundraising Kiwibank account, named Estelle’s laser fund: 38-90100562075-07. Sincerely, Transom Family.

make me laugh.(We all need a laugh!) As an older citizen myself I can just imagine how the sort of behaviour you experienced, would have gone down in my youth, but I am the first to admit we did have ratbags out there also. (Mind you, if caught they were dealt with a little differently in those days and we don’t really want to go down that path again.) Don’t dwell too much on this unhappy experience and perhaps next time test the waters with smile and a cheery, ‘hello!’ You can but try! I wish you luck! Bev Hick

Leo Stirling Doug Burns I think every day should be a No, that’s just complicating it holiday. I’m not really that in more (introducing a Waikato favour of it to be honest, I think anniversary day). Keep it simple! we should just have a day that celebrates all people, rather than one particular area.

Matthew Nelson, from Canada If you’ve had over 140 years (of not being part of Auckland) I think it’s about time you have your own anniversary day!

Wendy Philburn I think we should have our own anniversary day, and if we have our own day why celebrate Auckland.

Lodge drawcard Quickfire News for Cambridge Water alert drops back

By Claire Castle

The Auckland Blues training squad hit town on Monday, staying at the recently-opened Podium Lodge on Peake Rd. With 54 players and 16 support staff, the lodge was buzzing this week as the rugby players began a five-day camp to prepare for their first preseason game on Friday night. Friday night’s match will be in Te Kuiti against the Chiefs, and Blues head coach Tana Umaga explained that Cambridge was the ideal staging point for the team to prepare. “The whole idea was to get a little bit closer to Te Kuiti,” he explained, rather than travelling down by bus on the day of the game. During their week at the lodge, the team would be using the high-performance gym at the Avantidrome, as well as training on the Hautapu Rugby Club’s number one field, which is watered. They may also use the fields at St Peter’s, Tana said. Also on the agenda for the Blues this week was some team building in Rotorua, using the high ropes and other group activities to get to know

each other. “It will be interesting to see how people react,” said Tana, adding that there are quite a few new players in the team. Also staying at the lodge at the moment is the canoe racing women’s team, including Olympic medallist Lisa Carrington. Podium manager Anne Edgecombe said this week was a perfect example of high profile sportspeople mixing at the lodge. “They are athletes who may not even cross paths…All Blacks staying with Olympic gold medallists….it’s a real little hub of interesting activity this week at Podium,” she added. Completed just before Christmas, Podium Lodge had its official opening on January 1. Owned by the Brian Perry Trust, all profits from the lodge will be channelled back into the community through the trust’s Good Sports Programme, Anne explained. “It’s all about purpose, not profit.” The exact structure of the programme is still being refined, but the money will be distributed in the Waipa and Waikato regions, she said. With a maximum occupancy of 86 people, the lodge is made up

of a 14-bed dormitory, six twobedroom apartments and 24 studio apartments configured into hubs which are named after Olympic cities. Then there’s a central hub, with a lounge and communal dining area where the guests can mingle. The spaces seem quite flexible, with leaners and tables moved to accommodate the guests, and Anne said it’s been interesting to see how different groups have made the space work for them. “It’s been really exciting to see how it’s been used… it’s been seamless,” she said. Construction started last June, and the builders worked through the excessive rain to get the project completed on time, she said. “It was a three-year journey from concept to reality.” Built at a cost of around $6m, the lodge sits on 1.87 hectares on Peake Rd, just out of Cambridge and has a real rural vibe. Even though the facility has a sporting theme, Anne said anyone can book and come and stay at the lodge. And those who do might just get to see some All Blacks or Olympic gold medallists. You just never know.

House blaze guts kitchen By Claire Castle

The volunteer fire brigade was called out to a house fire on Robinson St just after 12.30am on Wednesday, arriving to find a Housing New Zealand house ablaze. Fortunately, the house was empty at the time, and a fire investigator said he would need to complete a full investigation but that his initial findings indicated that the fire appeared to have started in the wall behind the oven and spread up the wall cavity and into the ceiling. There was nothing to suggest that the tenant of the three-bedroom house was in any way to blame, he said. Due to the hot weather, neighbours were sleeping with their windows open and a number of them spoken to said they had woken to the smell of smoke. One said she also heard a loud bang shortly before the fire brigade arrived. The Salvation Army were at the scene in the morning, offering support to the tenant who was understandably shaken by events.

Water restrictions have dropped back to Level 2, meaning sprinklers may be used on alternate days – odd dates for oddnumbered houses and even dates for even-numbered houses – between 6-8am and 6-8pm. Hand-held hosing is still permitted at any time, however using a hose in the morning or evening rather than the middle of the day will be more water-efficient. Cambridge has dropped its consumption over recent weeks, meaning that the treatment plant has been able to keep up with demand, however council is still urging residents to make sensible decisions around non-essential water usage. The average demand for Cambridge usually sits around 11,000m³ of water per day, however on 20 December last year demand peaked at over 14,500m³ in Cambridge alone in a single day, meaning Level 3 restrictions had to be imposed as the treatment plant could not sustain that level of usage. The Cambridge water treatment plant at Karapiro will be upgraded later this year, which will hopefully mean there will be no need for water restrictions in the future. * * * *

Council eyeing heritage investments

Waipa District Council looks set to support multi-million-dollar investments in protecting, enhancing and promoting the district’s heritage but said it can’t ‘go it alone’. Mayor Jim Mylchreest said the Council’s draft 10-Year Plan will see Waipa heritage, including Waipa’s role in the New Zealand Land Wars, given a major push over the next decade. But while a number of heritage projects will be included and budgeted for, getting them done will rely on strong partnerships, including with iwi, and on accessing non-ratepayer funding, he said. That could include funding from central government. A $4.4 million spend on the category two Cambridge Town Hall to cover earthquake strengthening along with a potential upgrade to encourage community use is on the cards for Cambridge, along with a projected $11.8 million spend on cycleways and walkways in Waipa. The Council has already advised the draft 10-Year Plan will budget $100-million plus for both water and wastewater plus a further $138 million for stormwater, mainly in Cambridge. While the Plan has yet to be formally signed off by elected members for community comment, Waipa was looking at an average annual rates rise over the next 10 years of 1.5 per cent per year. The introduction of district-wide water meters means water charges will no longer be included in rates bills from July 2018. Without the separate water meter charge, the average annual rates increase would be about 2.2 per cent, according to council. * * * *

Applications opened yesterday for groups doing good for people or the environment to be part of Z Energy’s 2018 Good in the Hood community fundraising programme. The 820 groups selected to participate at Z service stations will all get a piece of the $1m in funding given away during Good in the Hood voting month in May. Each of Z’s 205 service stations will select four groups to support and have $4000 to donate. Customers then determine what percentage of the funding goes to each group by voting with an orange token every time they shop at Z during voting month. Since 2012 more than $5 million of Good in the Hood funding has gone to community groups and projects helping the country’s neighbourhoods thrive. Groups can apply online at z.co.nz/goodinthehood from 1-28 February 2018.

NZ Cycle Classic moving to Waipa By Claire Castle

The New Zealand Cycle Classic, the only Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) 2.2 accredited tour in the country will be held in Cambridge and surrounding areas from next year. Expected to consist of five stages, the exact route for the tour will be decided by veteran race director, Jorge Sandoval, who will be scoping out options for the stages in March. Jorge announced last Wednesday that he’d been offered a fresh start to move the five-day race, which this year attracted over 100 riders representing six nationalities, from Wairarapa to Waikato in 2019. Mr Sandoval said it was an amazing opportunity and allowed him to grow the race with the financial support required, with support from the Waikato-based Brian Perry Charitable Trust. Amanda Till, who joined the Trust last week as event director for the

cycling festival that will accompany the Cycle Classic, said the change in location came about as a result of a dinner conversation between Jorge and the Perry Trust’s chair Simon Perry. At that dinner, Simon apparently asked Jorge how he might go about getting the event to Cambridge. Jorge said it was the first time anyone had asked that, and with the backing of the Brian Perry Trust the move has now gone from an idea to reality. With a working title of Waipa Wheelfest, Amanda said the cycle festival and race will provide a major boost for the Cambridge economy, attracting spectators in addition to the teams taking part. There’s plenty of exciting options for stages in the area, Amanda said, so it will just be a case of Jorge picking his favourites. “You’ve got a little bit of everything within a 75km radius (of Cambridge),” she said, with plenty of road cycling up Maungakawa and French Pass Rd and

around Te Awamutu. There are also strict UCI guidelines that need to be met before the race can go ahead, with a 365-page handbook that needs to be satisfied. Fortunately, Jorge has a solid track record after 31 years of running the Wairapapa event, so he understands what is required, Amanda said, “because if you are not a good event organiser, you will get declined.” It will be a logistical challenge to decide on a date for the five-day event, as it has to work in with not only the international cycling calendar but also with other events happening in Cambridge at the same time. “We’re

just in the planning process,” Amanda explained, “but I would expect it will be held in the first part of next year.” Making the most of the buzz around the New Zealand Cycle Classic, the Waipa Wheelfest (if that’s what it will be called) will also include cycling activities for young and old, possibly including a twilight festival along the lines of the one run on Anzac Day, Amanda said. The event will also further cement Cambridge’s place as New Zealand’s home of cycling and is sure to be an exciting addition to the local sporting calendar.

Watch out, kids are about

Waipa District Council and Police are reminding drivers to focus on kids as schools get underway for the new year. Road safety co-ordinator Megan Jolly said drivers should slow down around schools and be prepared to stop at all

crossings. “Children returning to school can be easily distracted by new surroundings or meeting up with friends. They may also have difficulty judging distances and could step out onto a crossing

without warning, giving drivers little time to react. This is a reminder to be vigilant and expect increased traffic and pedestrian traffic”. Drivers are reminded to reduce their speed in school areas, take care around parked cars and to check twice at intersections. Parents dropping children at school also have an important part to play said Jolly. “Please be a good role model and use approved crossings when they’re available and always get your children

to exit the car from the left on to the footpath”. As part of the ‘Watch out, kids about’ campaign, children from Leamington School held placards outside their school on Tuesday, warning motorists to slow down. Police will also be patrolling around schools ensuring motorists travelling at a safe speed. ‘Watch out, kids about’ is a joint safety campaign between Council, local schools and New Zealand Police and aims to keep children safe on our roads.

The Cambridge Lions, pictured at the Lions’ Shed, were rapt to hear the news.

Cambridge Lions largest in NZ By Sophie Iremonger

The Cambridge Lions received some remarkable news last week – the group is currently the largest Lions club in the country. The local good sorts say it’s because of the Cambridge community that they’re able to do so well, with an average of $160,000 donated back into the community each year. In fact this year they’re on track to make $170,000 for Cambridge in 2018. “If they didn’t donate to us we wouldn’t make money to give away,” Cambridge Lion Betty Busst said of the local community. “It’s exciting and we’re privileged to be the biggest, we’re a hardworking club.” “And we have a lot of fun,” added Ernie Goodwin, one of the longest standing Cambridge Lions at 88 years young, beaten only by John Milne, a long-time Lion of almost 50 years. Betty was the first woman to join the local Lions after membership rules were changed in the late 90s. “Prior to that there was a Lioness club,” explained Betty, who was also the first female president. “We’ve got miles and miles of history, you could do a whole book on us!” she laughed. “We enjoy what we do and helping the community.” “It’s a bit of fun and fellowship too,” added John Brouggy, another former president and longstanding member of over 30 years. “You’ve got to enjoy what

you’re doing.” John added that they would love to see younger members join the Cambridge Lions. The average Lions’ age was around the 40s or 50s back when he joined, and now the average is 73. “We need younger people, because when we all croak there will be nobody here!” He added that locals can support the club by donating good, sellable items to the Lions’ Shed – a largescale “op shop” of sorts on Vogel St – and by buying items from there, open every Thursday and Saturday morning, 9am to 12pm. “Our shed is the main earner, as well as the food caravan and the monthly Trash ‘n’ Treasure market,” John said, explaining that the shed started out as a storage

space for their annual market day, which morphed into quarterly market days to make more room for more donations, and eventually became a twice weekly sales morning at the shed. Having started out as a small group of locals in 1960, the Cambridge Lions have come a long way over the decades. Now as the largest club in New Zealand with 87 members, they would love to see more locals join, particularly younger people, so that their legacy can live on. To find out more, pop down to the next Lions Shed sale on a Saturday or Thursday morning, or have a chat to them at the next Trash ‘n’ Treasure market, on Sunday, February 11 from 8am to 1pm on Victoria and Duke Streets.

Long-standing Lions Ernie Goodwin, Betty Busst and John Brouggy.

Student honoured in Wellington By David Zwartz Paul Seideman was a Czech teenager in 1941 when he first suffered the horrors of the Auschwitz death camp, and later other concentration

camps, during World War 2. Now approaching 90, he lives quietly at Shona McFarlane Retirement Village in Lower Hutt. His experiences, and a desire

to educate NZ youth, led Paul to endow a competition for Year 10 and Year 11-13 students at secondary schools that teach the Holocaust. The 2017 winners received

their prizes on 26 January at a Parliamentary reception for the commemoration of United Nations International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Sebastian (Seb) Bartley, a Year 10 pupil of Cambridge High School, won the junior section of this year’s Paul Seideman Competition, with a short documentary video with a strong message reinforcing the individuals’ responsibility to speak up when one sees the persecution of another. He was accompanied to Wellington by his parents, Ross and Lyndal Bartley of Cambridge. Anna Sue, a senior school student from Mt Roskill Grammar School in Auckland, won the senior section with a strong essay addressed to her own cohort of teenagers: “How the Holocaust is significant to high schoolers”. Hutt South MP Chris Bishop, who hosted the event and presented the prizes – cash, and a certificate - also spoke about his visit some years ago to a Holocaust-razed Polish village. Seb’s video was screened and Anna read her essay to the audience at the reception which included their parents, Holocaust survivors including

Paul Seideman, members of the diplomatic corps, members of Parliament, city and regional councillors, and human rights and interfaith leaders. The annual competition is part of the Holocaust education programme run by the Wellington-based Holocaust Centre of New Zealand. The Centre is dedicated to educating New Zealand society, through Holocaust history and remembrance, to oppose prejudice in all its forms, and guard against attempts to make any group a target of mass prejudice, as happened to the Jews in Europe. The annual United Nations International Holocaust Remembrance Day commemoration is cosponsored by the NZ National Commission for UNESCO, the UN’s educational organization, the Wellington City Council, and the Human Rights Commission. It included a memorial ceremony at the Makara Jewish cemetery. This year’s commemoration was linked to the Human Rights Commission’s campaign: “Give nothing to racism”.

Looking for Judy Rosanne Birch, who placed a message in the classified section of Cambridge News recently, is delighted to report that she found her friend, Cambridge local Judy Tod. Judy had once lived near Rosanne, a Nelson local, and became good friends. When she moved to Cambridge to be closer to family, the pair kept in touch over the years with annual Christmas card catch-ups. “We remembered each other’s birthdays and always wrote an update of the past year at Christmas,” explained Rosanne. “Well, this last Christmas, no card from Judy. I didn’t ‘cotton-on’ until recently when I was putting the cards away, I immediately rang her and a voice told me the number was now invalid. “Panic set in because I did not know her daughters’

names, however I was sure she had a son who lived nearby. So I ‘Googled’ the surname, as it is uncommon with only one D, and thought I’d struck oil when up came only one Tod amongst a host of Todd’s. I phoned the number and the lady was lovely but did not know Judy. She suggested I contact the Cambridge News.” Since posting a message in our paper asking Cambridge locals to help her get in touch with Judy, Rosanne has received five emails from people with Judy’s contact details. “On Friday last we were back in touch,” said Rosanne. “I am one extremely happy person and I thank the person who suggested I contact you (Cambridge News) profusely.” We tracked down Judy too, and she said she was delighted and grateful to be back in touch with her

Sun shines for church fair In a stark contrast to October’s soggy event, the sun shone down on St Andrew’s twice-yearly craft fair on Monday. A fixture of the Cambridge calendar since 1996, the fair is held each Labour Day and Auckland Anniversary Day. Locals and shoppers from further afield enjoyed the range of crafts and food on offer, with proprietors of the Manuka Bros coffee cart saying that

there had been more customers by 10am than there had been all day during the Labour Day market. Tracey Harfoot from Elephant Ollie had a prime spot for her New Zealandmade bibs by the church doors and said that after four or five years of stalls, Monday’s was their best fair yet. “We loved the space that we had and will be booking that same one for October,” she said.

Thumbs Up Thumbs Down Thumbs Up to Leamington Vege Fresh when the power went out last week. EFTPOS and the till weren’t working, so they took a list of what we all had and allowed us to come back later to pay for it. It was quite a big list, and I thought it was a terrific display of trust. Thumbs Down to people getting impatient in their cars going past an accident. Have a bit of concern for other people. Thumbs Down to the teenagers riding their scooters along Victoria St, ignoring people trying to use the pedestrian crossing. Thumbs Up to the guy who let me whip in front of him in the queue at the supermarket with my one bottle of milk, thanks mate. Do you have a "Thumbs up" or "Thumbs down" comment you'd like to share? Parking skills lacking By Claire Castle

The St Andrew’s fair on Monday provided further proof that drivers really need white lines painted on the road to show them where to park, with a number of instances of inconsiderate parking evident in the streets around the church. Drivers leaving an unnecessarily big gap between cars meant that on Bryce St alone another 10 cars could have parked, had people thought about other drivers when they were parking. Council has recently been working with the Chamber of Commerce to improve the availability of parking in the town, with one of the solutions suggested being the painting of parking spaces. Judging by the parking situation on the weekend, it seems these are needed throughout the town, not just in the CBD.

Not pulling in close enough to the car in front caused wasted parking space at the weekend.

Step up for Alfresco Bites By Claire Castle

Organiser of Alfresco Bites, Taryn ‘Taz’ Lyford has a passion for Cambridge and a clear idea of what she would like to bring to the town, but she needs a bit of help to continue that dream. Alfresco Bites, a Friday night festival of food which has been running over warmer months since 2015, has recently been postponed until Taz can get some more backing from the community. What lies behind her passion for Alfresco Bites is what the event can bring to people in the town – the chance to sit down with family and friends with some good food and music and enjoy a community event. Maybe even talk to people they don’t know. “It’s about creating connections within the community that will boost it and make

it a better place to live, work and play,” Taz explained. It’s clearly a timeconsuming exercise, and she said that one of the most challenging elements to running the weekly outdoor market has been the fickle weather. With some markets cancelled on the back of dire weather forecasts, it’s hard to take when you cancel the event because of predicted torrential downpours and thunder storms which never arrive. But that’s just the way it goes, she laughed. A powerhouse of ideas, Taz is also the driving force behind the Twilight Christmas Market as well as the Bloom Creative Market, which will be held on February 25 at the Leamington Domain. Another way she can get people out and about having fun and meeting others in the community. Not one to rest on her laurels, Taz also organised the outdoor

screening of Goodbye Pork Pie last it. Cambridge golfer makes top ranks in Australia By Sophie Iremonger

One of Cambridge’s top golfers has made his mark on the international

stage with top results at prestigious golfing tournaments in Australia. Jordan Woodall flew to Perth last month to compete in the Australian

Amateur Championships at the Lake Karrinyup Golf Club over the weekend of January 20. The young golfer qualified in the top 64 and played his way through the preliminary rounds, quarter-finals and semi-finals, where unfortunately he was beaten 2-1 by Japanese player and eventual winner of the competition, Keita Nakajima. It was a fantastic achievement for the former Cambridge High School student. One local golfing expert said he did not know of any other New Zealand golfer to make the quarter finals of the

Australian Amateur Champs. With the competition wrapped up, Woodall flew to Sydney to compete in the Avondale Amateur tournament over January 23-26. Up against world-ranking players, Woodall qualified out of around 120 players to make the top 60. He finished with a tie for 16th position, with rounds of 74, 74, 71 and 70. Jordan soon returned to New Zealand to take part in this week’s first stage of qualifying in the NZ Open at Titirangi Golf Club. His journey can be followed at www. facebook.com/woodallgolf/.

New life for former rower

By Sophie Iremonger

An elite rower-turned trainer has shifted the way she motivates others, moving from the podium to the gym as a local trainer, and now with a beautiful baby in tow. Erin Monique O’Brien, known locally as Em, wrapped up her stellar career with the NZ women’s quad in 2016 and moved her focus to helping others to achieve their fitness goals through STM Functional Fit. Towards the end of last year, she and husband Owen welcomed their first child into the world, baby Neave. Her daughter is now four-and-a-half-

Erin Monique O’Brien with baby Neave

months old and Em is wading her way through the joys of early motherhood whilst keeping with the fitness she is known for. “It’s so cool to be able to continue to do what I do and live such an important life as a mum as well,” said Em. “You have no idea what (having a baby) is going to be like, but in a good way, you never realised that you could care for someone so much.” With her elite rowing days behind her, Em said her role at STM has given her a new and more rewarding drive. “What I love about this is, it’s my way to do as much as I can to help other people,” she said. “I might (go back to rowing) one day, right now I’m just happy doing the best that I can in the life that I’m living. But you never say never and never say no. “When I was out of rowing I missed the team environment, I missed exercising with people, and I came in here (to STM) and I met Sandro, and I knew soon after that that I wanted to be a trainer… so I did my personal training certificate, and I never looked back.” Em works alongside Tania McKay, the manager of the local STM gym, and said baby Neave feels right at home at the Carter’s Flat centre. “We all pitch in,” said Tania. “If Em comes down and does a class I’ll take Neave for a walk around the lake, I love it,” she smiled. Em said keeping active during her pregnancy made all the difference in

post-partum life. “My aim was to stay reasonably fit throughout the pregnancy to make life easier for when I had her, and for getting back into fitness afterwards, because I do think fitness is really important for your sanity and for your general health and wellbeing when you have a child. Some people aren’t as lucky as me, they can’t continue to do exercise while pregnant, but there are different things that you can do.” Em is looking forward to starting a “Mums and Bubs” class this month, alongside fellow mum Erin Turfery, helping women get back into fitness while also having bonding time with

their baby. For new mums looking to get back into fitness, Em said, “don’t be intimidated by exercise”. “You don’t have to be really fit to start, it can be adapted so that it suits you and the fitness level that you’re at right now. Just don’t be afraid of it, because it’s good to keep up with the little ones as well. “You’ll want to be fit, because those little legs move very quickly!” Em said she continues to row here and there, most recently racing with the Petone Rowing Club at the North Island Club Rowing Champs over the weekend.

lots on offer on Sunday evening, bidding was steady early on until Lot 10, a Tavistock filly from Sir Patrick Hogan’s last draft as principal at Cambridge Stud, entered the ring. From a powerful female lineage that includes champion race and broodmare Tristalove, the showy bay fell to the $420,000 bid of local bloodstock agent Bruce Perry who beat out Mike and Paul Moroney to secure the colt. “I’ve bought her for some Cambridge based breeders, so she will stay here in New Zealand,” Perry said. Another of the final yearlings presented by Sir Patrick Hogan under his Cambridge Stud banner was Lot 159, the Tavistock filly from Danehill mare Diamond Like. Touted as one of the leading individuals at the sale, she did her blueblood family proud as she fetched $750,000 from regular Karaka visitor Peter Moody. “She’s one of those

magical filly’s that has a page to match. We’re looking to put a few nice fillies together, my wife and a few clients, that we can race back in Australia,” said Moody. “She’ll stay here and get broken in… then she’ll head over in October or November… I’ve had

adventure off to the best possible start when their Ocean Park filly sold for $130,000. On Wednesday, a public presentation to Sir Patrick and Lady Justine Hogan was made, beginning with a short video piece reflecting on their successful

career in the bloodstock industry, followed by a speech by New Zealand Bloodstock’s Joe Walls, and then the presentation of a trophy engraved with the names of their most significant sales results and performances. The 2018 Karaka Yearling sale ends Feb 4.

State of the art new pilates studio open in h After three years of holding Pilates classes in her TV room, Alanie Steenkamp is over the moon in her newly completed Cambridge Pilates studio on Empire St. With its entrance off Alpha St, the studio –formerly a garage with a concrete floor and orange walls – is now unrecognisable – transformed into a spacious oasis in the heart of Cambridge. Alanie paid tribute to her clients, who have followed her to four different locations in three years her and who are also excited about the new studio. “My clients have been amazing,” she said. Thanks to the move, Alanie has been able to increase the number of reformer machines on offer from three to five, and Cambridge Pilates now has a

comprehensive weekly timetable of classes to suit everyone. South Africa-born Alanie’s Pilates journey began in 2002, when her mum suggested she should do a class. She had never heard of it but decided to give it a go. “In my first class, I was bored out of my mind,” she laughed. Then she couldn’t laugh for three days afterwards, her core muscles were so sore. “I thought that I wasn’t doing much, but it had such a big effect I had to figure out why it was so effective.” Alanie was quickly hooked on the exercise system she calls the foundation of movement, and it has become her life’s work. It’s about knowing how to use your body, she said, and taking that

knowledge to other sports. “Almost every time someone is doing recovery (with Pilates), they will say ‘I wish I knew this before’ whatever sport it was that they injured themselves doing.” Among the range of the classes on offer at the studio is OOV, a system using an ergonomically-designed piece of equipment developed by an Australian osteopath and neuroscientist as a way of rehabilitating injured backs. It has moved on from there, and what was developed as an alternative to a rolled towel to lengthen the spine has now gained a following of its own. “You can strengthen your core but it’s safe for your back…you can’t do it wrong on the OOV,” Alanie explained. Also on offer are Total Barre classes, which Alanie said require neither a tutu nor any dance ability. “I thought you had to have a dance background…I have zero dance background and it’s good fun, it’s Pilates standing,” she said, adding that the Total Barre is hard

cardio that will challenge all fitness levels. Sequences target the arms, legs and core, lengthening and streamlining the student’s physique. And it’s “lively and vigorous” Alanie said, even appealing to male participants. With a maximum of 12 in any class, Alanie prides herself on giving each student the attention they need to get results. “I’m quite ‘hands on’ with each exercise I get to everyone,” she explained, adding that “if you don’t apply all the principles of Pilates you’re not doing anything.” That’s why doing Pilates at home is not a good idea, she said, because you can’t see your body to make sure your posture and application is correct. With her youngest client aged 12 and her oldest 87, there is something for everyone at Alanie’s studio. And the men are coming along as well, impressed by the results and the workout that Pilates will deliver them. With a beautiful new studio and an increased number of classes, no doubt even more Cambridge people will be discovering Pilates.

Visit Alanie’s Facebook page: cambridgepilatesnz for a competition to celebrate the opening of the new studio.

Origin of Pilates

Pilates is a system of exercises devised in the early part of last century by Joseph Pilates, who was born in Germany in 1880. Emigrating to England in 1912, the 32-year-old was interned as a German enemy alien at the start of World War 1, and it was during this time that he developed Pilates, using a combination of Western and Eastern approaches to health and fitness. While working as a nurse in the camp, he experimented with attaching springs and pulleys to hospital beds so that bedridden patients could do effective exercise. These hospital beds were the forerunner to the Reformer machines that feature in Pilates studios across the world. When he moved to America in 1923, his unique system was an instant hit with dancers. Called Controlology, it was only later that it was renamed in honour of its inventor.

Students reap rewards

Alanie Steenkamp’s Pilates students have kept her going over three years and across four different venues. And they couldn’t be happier with the new premises, or the results that Pilates has delivered for them in their lives. Jackie Doolin said she started out with “lots” of back pain when she joined Alanie’s Pilates tribe three years ago. “Now, unless I don’t do my pilates, I don’t have any,” she beamed. And she’s formed a strong bond with the others in the class, laughingly describing them as “all pretty good at moaning and groaning,” Joking aside, Jackie said there’s a great atmosphere in the classes, and she particularly appreciates the encouragement she gets from the others. Fellow classmate Morag Gurnsey also said the camaraderie of the group is big help as they work through the exercises together. “You go through the highs and lows together,” she laughed. Alanie is obviously extremely proud of the progress her students have made. “They literally started out as everyday mums and now they’re sportswomen who are cycling and jogging, it’s great,” she said. Student Julie Cooney agreed, saying that Pilates has allowed her to do what she wants to do, including trying her hand at other sports, including kayaking. “It puts you in touch with your core,” she explained, and that’s got to be a good thing.

DISCOVER PUTARURU... 5 minutes from Tirau

Unique addition to timber museum

The Timber Museum of New Zealand, better known as the Putaruru Timber Museum, has had a remarkable piece of machinery added to its collection. A home-made forklift built by the late John Materman was recently shifted from its former home in Martinborough to the iconic site at the southern end of Putaruru. Materman built the forklift in the 1970s using whatever machinery parts he could find – with the help of the late Stan Waugh, his son Rob and the late Frank Murray – and used it on jobs throughout the Wairarapa for more than three decades, transporting logs to his portable mill. The driving force behind the unique piece of machinery came from a Fordson engine,

and an Aveling-Barford dump truck provided the front transmission and front wheels. The transmission brake came from a Hillman Hunter disc and calliper, and the axle and rear wheels came from an International tractor. The thrifty and ingenious forklift served Materman well for many years, enabling him to continue doing the work he was passionate about for 30 odd years. It sat idle for seven years leading up to Mr Materman’s passing, but his son Wim managed to get it running once more with assistance from Brian King, using it one last time in February last year. In December Materman’s family donated the forklift to the Timber Museum in Putaruru with the idea that no one else would likely build something

quite like it again. The New Zealand Timber museum was established in the late ‘70s on the site of the old Tuck and Watkins Mill, with the aim to celebrate and preserve the history of the timber industry in the South Waikato district. It is open every day from 10am to 4pm, except Sundays and Mondays or public holidays. Adult entry is $12.50, under 18s $7, and under fives free. Family passes and guided tours also available. More info is available at www. nztimbermuseum.co.nz.

Putaruru crayfish found dead again Samples have been gathered from Oraka Stream at the northern end of Putaruru following the discovering of dead freshwater crayfish for the second time in a year. Hundreds of crayfish were found dead in the Oraka stream in December 2016, caused by a pesticide spraying operation, and just over a year later the same species was found dead in the same stream. have yet to come back for the recent incident, having been sent to Australia for analysis. Council alerted the Ministry of Health and Ministry for Primary Industries, and no official heath warning has been issued. Council incident response manager Patrick Lynch confirmed council was alerted in December by a member of the public, who saw the crayfish “tumbling” down the stream, which is popular for fishing and a food source for some. Waikato District Health Board medical officer of health Dr Felicity Dumble has said there is no cause for alarm, citing the 2016 incident as having been caused by a pesticide containing pyrethroid – a common ingredient in many household insecticides, which requires a vastly significant level to pose even a slight risk to humans. Dumble was not aware of any person’s health being affected by the event. Waikato Regional Council could not confirm an exact date of when the full analysis of the samples would be completed.

YOUR TRIP TO TIRAU Tirau’s concrete obsession FRIDAY FEBRUARY 2, 2018

CAMBRIDGE NEWS | 19

Feel peaceful in Okoroire’s tranquil setting 1 Day Scenic Hot Springs Package

– Historic Hotel since 1889

By Claire Castle

The owner of Outdoor Obsession in Tirau, Sharon Burling-Claridge, reckons she’s not really all that artistic. Fortunately, however, she does have a knack for the concrete she uses to make her outdoor sculptures. “I can mix a mean brew of concrete,” she laughed, adding that the There is plenty on offer for outdoor spaces at Outdoor medium is something that really appeals to her. Having been “playing” with concrete for a few years, Sharon opened Obsession Outdoor Obsession at the top of the hill in Tirau behind the Oxford Hotel in 2015. There’s concrete in many shapes and forms, but Sharon has also stocked her shop with a range of corrugated wall art, ceramic art, bird baths, planters and pretty much anything you need to decorate your outdoor space. And now the shop is open for demonstrations, so visitors can come and see Sharon and her “mean brew of concrete” in action. Taking around 40 minutes, the idea of the demonstrations is to give visitors a bit of an outing while they are visiting the town, Sharon explained. She’s thought about doing some more hands-on work at the shop, where people could come and learn the concrete craft, but that idea is on the backburner at the moment. “I just want to do one or two things properly,” she said, adding that she might look at it the future if she had more staff to help out. A resident of Tirau for the past 10 years, Sharon and her family moved up from Blenheim to ensure more options for her children in the future. Last year, Sharon joined the community board, determined to make a difference in the town. “I got sick of moaning about it,” she laughed. One of the things on her agenda as a community board member is Some of the concrete creations for sale at Sharon’s reviving the corrugated iron theme along the main street of town. Tirau Tirau shop on the hill was previously known for that and Sharon would like to see it come back in a big way. The town is about quirky and unusual offerings that people can’t find anywhere else, Sharon explained. “The town is ticking over but it could be a little Wanaka if we wanted it to be …it could be so nice.” In the meantime, Sharon is keen to keep focussing on quirky and unusual offerings for visitors and is making sure that Outdoor Obsession has become one of the town’s destination shops which • Waterjet, Plasma, Corrugated Iron Art make the trip to Tirau something • Outdoor Concrete Art special. More than two thousand rowers raced through the waters of Lake Karapiro last weekend, with two regattas taking place simultaneously. It all started on Friday, with over 760 of the total 2272 competitors taking part in both the Cambridge Town Cup (CTC) and the North Island Club Championships (NICC). Cambridge High School’s contingent of rowers competed in 17 A finals and

five B finals. Across the board the U15 to U18 girls and boys achieved results in quads, fours, doubles and pairs. “These will be hot contenders for North Island Secondary School Champs in early March,” said Sandy Stuart, CHS head rowing coach. Cambridge High School entered an U18 boys eight crew, believed to be the first in at least two decades, with Jacques Balsom, Seth Hope, Sam

Hogan, Thomas Reed, Jack Monkley, Josh Hogan, Sean Hale and Thomas Fraser, coxed by Joel Bartrum. The boys won their heat on Saturday and placed amongst some of the most potential leading eights boats in the New Zealand secondary schools’ arena. In the elite realm of the NICC, single sculler Robbie Manson powered his way to a gold medal finish in just six minutes 39.58 seconds, defeating twotime Olympic champion Mahe Drysdale in fifth. Whitehall Horse Trek coming up The Grant Brunskill Memorial Horse Trek, formerly known as the Whitehall Horse Trek, will kick off in two weeks’ time on Sunday, February 18. Originally called the Whitehall Horse Trek, the event has been renamed in memory of Grant Brunskill, a Whitehall local who originally helped organise the trek and led it from its inception in 2009. Unfortunately he died

suddenly last year. As is tradition, the trek will start at 539 Brunskill Road, Whitehall. Riders will head towards French Pass Hills over gentle rolling country, with fantastic views of both sides of the Whitehall hills. The journey will gradually rise to the highest point, gazing west with great views of Cambridge, much of the Waikato and its surrounding hills and mountains.

The Whitehall Horse Trek has been running for almost a decade.

The four to five-hour trek meanders through seven sheep, beef, dairying and grazing farms, stopping for a BBQ lunch at Gardner’s Wool Shed. A ute will be available for riders to have their gear or packs taken up to the lunch spot. The trek departs at 9.30am,

with registration from 8.30 to 9.15am. Riding helmets must be worn and those under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Organisers are asking that all horses be ridden, no unridden or leading horses allowed, and no dogs. Riders will need to arrive in time to allow for checking

in and filling out an indemnity form. All proceeds from the trek go towards the Whitehall Settlers Hall Association, for maintenance and running costs of the hall. Entry is $30 per adult, $15 for those under 16. For more information contact Vickie Risi on (07) 823 0166.

It’s a golf cart, not a yacht

It was cause for a good laugh at the Cambridge Golf Club recently when a bout of wild summer weather stirred up a group of local golfers. Known as Atlanta, the bi-weekly golfing group was at the Cambridge course recently on one of their usual rounds. With proper names withheld, a golfer nicknamed Bolter had an umbrella erected and mounted onto his golf cart, playing on the 13th hole. An unexpected gust of wind whipped through the course and caught the “sails” of the umbrella, propelling the cart towards the nearby water. The unfortunate golfer was too slow in his 30-metre chase, missing the opportunity to save the cart as it plunged into the murky waters. Other members of the group helped to fish the cart out of the water, using their golf clubs to hook it and avoid getting wet. But the gear was soaked through, and as the misfortunate Bolter tipped water out of his golf bag, a few tadpoles came with it. “So now we’ve nicknamed him Tadbolt,” said one of his golfing friends, who captured the incident on his phone. “That’s the second time it’s happened to our group of The Atlanta players help the newly-nicknamed Tadbolt retrieve his gear from the water. players, on the same hole,” he laughed.

THE GREATEST SHOWMAN

BROKEN

Inspired by a true story. Very good indeed – same class as Mahana. Acting, photography, script are all first rate. Another fine homegrown movie. Please support it – you won’t be disappointed. Logan, an ex-gang leader, has left the gang life to raise his daughter Tori. But when Tori is murdered by an opposing gang in town, Logan must choose forgiveness or revenge. Death comes for us all. Are you ready when it comes? A story of tragedy, vengeance, betrayal, forgiveness and redemption. Presented by City Impact Church.

Reviewed by Claire Castle Normally I am allergic to musicals, however The Greatest Showman delivered much more than just your standard singing and dancing routines. There was actually a real story behind this one. Inspired by the story of P.T. Barnham (of Barnham and Bailey circus fame) and his partnership with James Bailey – Phillip Carlyle in the movie, a composite character partly based on Bailey – the movie was a journey from Barnham’s humble and poverty-stricken beginnings to his eventual stardom as a circus proprietor. With an all-star cast including Hugh Jackman as P.T. Barnham and Zac Efron as Phillip Carlyle, the standout performance surely came from Keala Settle, who played the part of the bearded lady, Lettie Lutz. The songs are addictive and it had a real feel-good factor. I gave it 4 stars.
