Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) A1 A2 B1 B2 C1 C2 Titles with this logo include a reference to the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR) levels, as a general guide to teachers

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is a useful tool for anyone involved in English language learning, teaching and testing. It provides a common basis for describing levels of language ability in terms of what a learner ‘can do’ with the language in real-world tasks. Cambridge University Press is a leading member of English Profile, an EU-sponsored research project to describe the specific knowledge and skills in English that learners need to reach each CEFR level. Our course designers and authors make use of English Profile research to ensure courses are finely tuned to what learners at each level need.

Even learners who are at a higher proficiency level still struggle with elements in Unlock Basic and this course will supplement them very well; helping the move towards greater success.” Tracy Quayat, Saudi Arabia

UNIT / 08: NATURAL WORLD

NOTE COMPLETION

LISTENING

In this type of task you complete a set of notes by writing up to three words, or two words and/or a number, in each gap. The instructions tell you how many words you are allowed to write. You must complete the notes with the words you hear on the recording.

IN THIS UNIT YOU WILL LEARN HOW TO • listen to people talking about a topic related to work or study

USING HEADINGS TO HELP YOU

• complete notes in a task • use headings in the notes to guide you through what the speaker is saying

01

04

Look at the notes about the animals. Match the headings 1–5 in exercise 3 with the notes below. There is an example to help you.

Match photographs A–D with the names of the animals. Arabian leopard

blue ring octopus

A

mountain gorilla

Pere David’s deer

B

Country of origin Dangers Diet Habitat Physical description

a b c d e

What does it eat? Where does it come from? Where does it live? What does it look like? What threats does it face?

People are using its land for cows and sheep Mainly eats grass Has long arms Lives on wet lands Comes from Africa

The notes often have headings to guide you. They can help you follow what the speaker(s) are saying.

TIP

04 Notes often do not follow grammatical rules or layout. For example, there may be auxiliary verbs or articles missing. The notes may also be lists with bullet points.

1

‘SIGNPOSTING’ WORDS

05

C

1 2 3 4 5

a b c d e

D

03

Match the headings 1–5 with the questions a–e.

• use the speaker’s ‘signposting’ words to help you follow notes.

LEAD-IN

TIP

03

Look at the signposting phrases 1–6 below. They signal different kinds of information. Match them with the meanings a–e. One meaning can be used twice. 1 2 3 4 5 6

So, now I’m going to talk a little about … Let’s have a look at two reasons why … So, I’ll move on to talk about … Firstly … Secondly I’d like to conclude by talking about … In other words …

THIS WAY

‘Signposting’ words are words and phrases that speakers use to help their listeners follow their talk.

a The speaker is going to talk about a new topic and this will be the last thing he/she talks about (might be the last heading on the Notes). b The speaker is going to talk about a new topic – which might be a new heading on the Notes. c The speaker is going to say the same thing using different words. d The speaker is going to give two reasons – listen carefully for both. e Here is the first (reason) … and here is the second (reason)

02

Listen to the four short extracts. Which animal in exercise 1 is each speaker describing?

The world’s only corpus-informed grammar series Grammar in the Real World A1 A2 B1 C1

Each unit presents the grammar in a realistic context, using intriguing, contemporary readings

Grammar and Beyond Randi Reppen, Laurie Blass, Susan Iannuzzi, Alice Savage, John D. Bunting and Luciana Diniz BEGINNER TO ADVANCED WINNER British Council ELTons Awards

Grammar and Beyond teaches the grammar students need most, thanks to the billion-word collection of authentic language – the Cambridge English Corpus. The four-level series places special emphasis on grammar for writing. As they prepare to write, students practise editing common mistakes – based on an extensive corpus of student writing. Then they apply the grammar in a writing task, making a clear connection between what they study and how they write. Real-World Contexts • Students learn each structure in the context in which it most commonly appears illustrating authentic usage. Cramming for success: study and academic work

1 A

Study and exams 1

Before an exam, some students cram1 for it. Even if you’re a genius2, you’ll have to do some revision. If the exam happens every year, you can revise by looking at past papers3. Some things can be memorised or learnt (of ) by heart. But rote-learning4 is not suficient for most subjects. It is also possible to use mnemonics5. However, all things considered, the best idea is to bury yourself in your books6 and to study intensively7 until you know the subject inside out8.

B

study in a very concentrated way for a short time an exceptionally clever person exam papers from previous years 4 learning purely by repetition 5 /niˈmɒnɪks/ tricks that help you remember something, for example: ‘i’ before ‘e’ except ater ‘c’ is a mnemonic for English spelling (e.g. friend, but receive) 6 spend the maximum time studying 7 in a very focused way 8 know it completely 2 3

Academic writing composition could be just 50–100 words, oten used for school work essay longer than a composition, more serious, hundreds or thousands of words assignment a long essay, oten part of a course, usually thousands of words project like an assignment, but emphasis on student’s own material and topic portfolio a collection of individual pieces of work; may include drawings and other examples of creative work as well as writing dissertation a long, research-based work, perhaps 10–15,000 words, for a degree or diploma thesis a very long, original, research-based work, perhaps 80–100,000 words, for a higher degree (e.g. PhD) It’s a good idea to start with a mind map1 when preparing an essay. Always write a first drat2 before writing up the final version. Your essay should be all your own work; plagiarism3 is a very serious ofence in colleges and universities. It is an increasing problem because it is so easy to cut and paste from materials available on the internet, and students have to sign a plagiarism form to say that the work they are handing in is all their own and that they acknowledge4 any sources they have used. There is usually a deadline5. Ater the essay is submitted6, it will be assessed7 and usually you can get feedback8. 1 diagram that lays out ideas for a topic and how they are connected to one another 2 first, rough version 3 /pledȢərzəm/ using other people’s work as if it was yours 4 give details of 5 date by which you must hand in the work 6 handed in; formal 7 evaluated and given a grade 8 comments from the teacher/tutor

RESEARCH

University academics carry out research and are expected to read academic journals2, which publish papers/articles on specialised subjects. If a library does not have a copy of a book or journal, you may be able to access it online3 or you can usually get it through an inter-library loan4. Open educational resources5 are particularly convenient for many students. Academic study can be very demanding, and some students drop out6, but the majority survive till finals7 and become well-qualified8 members of their future professions.
