The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is a useful tool for anyone involved in English language learning, teaching and testing. It provides a common basis for describing levels of language ability in terms of what a learner ‘can do’ with the language in real-world tasks. Cambridge University Press is a leading member of English Profile, an EU-sponsored research project to describe the specific knowledge and skills in English that learners need to reach each CEFR level. Our course designers and authors make use of English Profile research to ensure courses are finely tuned to what learners at each level need.

Beyond Learning
“Learning English has shown our students opportunities and realities outside of their daily context, and has allowed them to connect with people from other backgrounds. In some cases, learning another language has made them understand that they can look for other opportunities to improve their lives and find new paths in the work and social areas for their future. Miriam: English Teacher and Academic Coordinator in Mexico

Touchstone, together with Viewpoint, is a six-level English program based on research from the Cambridge English Corpus. It presents natural language in authentic contexts.
Viewpoint is a two-level course for high-intermediate to advanced level learners that follows on from Touchstone. The syllabus is based on extensive corpus research to ensure that students learn the most useful and widely used words, phrases, and grammar for higher-level learners.
• Corpus-informed language – Extensive corpus research ensures that the language taught is the language people really use. • Conversation strategies – Students learn the language and skills to interact with fluency and confidence.
• Conversation strategies give students the language and skills to interact fluently and confidently.
• Inductive learning – Students are encouraged to work out grammatical structures and English usage for themselves, making them more likely to remember what they have learned. • Common errors – Touchstone incorporates unique research into the Cambridge Learner Corpus which identifies the most typical learner errors. These are highlighted in ‘Common error’ panels to help avoid them becoming entrenched. cambridge.org/touchstone2

Cambridge English Empower CEFR report
Online Assessment and Practice, and Online Workbook The course allows you to easily incorporate digital learning, with assessment and extra practice materials, available online via the Cambridge Learning Management System*. There is a unit progress test for every unit of the course, focusing on the core grammar, vocabulary and functional language from the unit. After each test, students are directed to personalised practice,
depending on the score they achieved, so they focus on the areas that will benefit them most. Skills-based mid- and end-of-course tests are also included. Learners are provided with a unique CEFR report which reliably benchmarks their level in each of the four skills, and provides clear evidence of progress made during the course. * Tests and Workbook also available in print.

UNIT / 08: NATURAL WORLD
NOTE COMPLETION
LISTENING
In this type of task you complete a set of notes by writing up to three words, or two words and/or a number, in each gap. The instructions tell you how many words you are allowed to write. You must complete the notes with the words you hear on the recording.
IN THIS UNIT YOU WILL LEARN HOW TO • listen to people talking about a topic related to work or study
USING HEADINGS TO HELP YOU
• complete notes in a task • use headings in the notes to guide you through what the speaker is saying
01
04
Look at the notes about the animals. Match the headings 1–5 in exercise 3 with the notes below. There is an example to help you.
Match photographs A–D with the names of the animals. Arabian leopard
blue ring octopus
A
mountain gorilla
Pere David’s deer
B
Country of origin Dangers Diet Habitat Physical description
a b c d e
What does it eat? Where does it come from? Where does it live? What does it look like? What threats does it face?
People are using its land for cows and sheep Mainly eats grass Has long arms Lives on wet lands Comes from Africa
The notes often have headings to guide you. They can help you follow what the speaker(s) are saying.
TIP
04 Notes often do not follow grammatical rules or layout. For example, there may be auxiliary verbs or articles missing. The notes may also be lists with bullet points.

05
C
1 2 3 4 5
a b c d e
D
03
Match the headings 1–5 with the questions a–e.
• use the speaker’s ‘signposting’ words to help you follow notes.
LEAD-IN
TIP
03
Look at the signposting phrases 1–6 below. They signal different kinds of information. Match them with the meanings a–e. One meaning can be used twice. 1 2 3 4 5 6
So, now I’m going to talk a little about … Let’s have a look at two reasons why … So, I’ll move on to talk about … Firstly … Secondly I’d like to conclude by talking about … In other words …
THIS WAY
‘Signposting’ words are words and phrases that speakers use to help their listeners follow their talk.
a The speaker is going to talk about a new topic and this will be the last thing he/she talks about (might be the last heading on the Notes). b The speaker is going to talk about a new topic – which might be a new heading on the Notes. c The speaker is going to say the same thing using different words. d The speaker is going to give two reasons – listen carefully for both. e Here is the first (reason) … and here is the second (reason)

Listen to the four short extracts. Which animal in exercise 1 is each speaker describing?

How I bought my dream house When I first saw the old house I had just moved to the area. It had been empty for about a year and was beginning to need some repairs, but the house was exactly what I wanted. But by the time I had put together enough money I learnt that a property developer had bought it and planned to turn it into a hotel. Six months later I had nearly given up hope of finding anywhere to live in the village when I heard that the house was for sale again. The property developer had decided to invest his money in a new housing development on the edge of the village. I bought the house immediately and I’ve lived there happily ever since.

Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) A1 A2 B1 B2 C1 C2 Titles with this logo include a reference to the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR) levels, as a general guide to teachers

The fun crowd standing together within our Cambridge University scene, under our Better Learning sky, are all connected to Cambridge, but do you know how? We have some famous Cambridge University Alumni like John Cleese, Ian McKellen and Eddie Redmayne, bumping shoulders with the Duke of Cambridge himself, Prince William. They are joined by some of our authors and characters from our courses too!

Copying The law allows a reader to make a single copy of a part of a book for purposes of private study. It does not allow the copying of entire books or the making of multiple copies of extracts. In some countries it is possible for schools to do a limited amount of photocopying if they are registered with the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA), or an associated licensing agency. If your school does not have a school licence you can only photocopy pages for your students if the page is marked ‘photocopiable’. You are allowed to make one copy of an audio disc for back-up purposes only. No copying of videos or DVDs is permitted. For further information, please visit cambridge.org/rights
Acknowledgements The authors and publishers acknowledge the following sources of copyright material and are grateful for the permissions granted. While every effort has been made, it has not always been possible to identify the sources of all the material used, or to trace all copyright holders. If any omissions are brought to our notice, we will be happy to include the appropriate acknowledgements on reprinting and in the next update to the digital edition, as applicable.
