Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) Pre A1 A1 A2 B1 B2 C1 C2 Titles with this logo include a reference to the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR) levels, as a general guide to teachers The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is a useful tool for anyone involved in English language learning, teaching and testing. It provides a common basis for describing levels of language ability in terms of what a learner ‘can do’ with the language in real-world tasks. Cambridge University Press is a leading member of English Profile, an EU-sponsored research project to describe the specific knowledge and skills in English that learners need to reach each CEFR level. Our course designers and authors make use of English Profile research to ensure courses are finely tuned to what learners at each level need.

Powerful insights into language, learning and teaching When we learn together, we learn more. Every day we talk to people from all over the world about what would make their experiences of teaching and learning English better. At Cambridge, our team of expert researchers focus on how the English language is evolving, how it is used in everyday life and how best to teach it.

One of our most valuable tools is the Cambridge English Corpus, a bank of over two billion words that’s growing every day. It helps us to ensure the language we use in our material is useful in the real-world and not just the classroom.

We actively help to shape a brighter future by using our insights to create effective, relevant content.

World-class teacher development initiatives

Future-ready learning with Cambridge Life Competencies As the world around us changes, so should we. Today, learners need far more than just academic skills to succeed in the real world – they need life competencies too. There have been many initiatives attempting to address this skills gap, each relating to different contexts. We are responding to educators that have asked for a way to understand how all of these approaches relate to English language programmes.

Creative thinking

We have analysed what the basic components of these competencies are and grouped them into six main areas. This forms our Cambridge Life Competencies Framework. To make sure these skills are actioned and not just discussed, we are now mapping our courses to this unique framework. This way, you can feel confident your learners will leave the classroom as well-rounded, future-ready citizens‌ all without making any extra work for you!

For a future full of opportunities

Literacy-based approach • Skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension are essential to literacy development – but in a second language children require much more support to acquire literacy. • Students learn to read in English, mastering phonics, spelling and expanding their vocabulary, then, as their skills develop they read to learn, accessing information in a second language. • Students become confident and articulate readers, writers, speakers and listeners of English. Oracy framework • Oracy skills, the ability to communicate confidently in different situations (speaking, presenting, listening actively, participating in group discussions, etc.) are an essential component of exceptional communication. • The framework, developed with leading oracy experts in the Department of Education at Cambridge University, breaks skills into physical, cognitive and social-emotional. • Through this oracy practice students become effective communicators, giving them confidence and helping set them up for future success. Creativity • Creative work and play motivate children by promoting the fun in learning while encouraging them to look at problems in different ways and from multiple perspectives. • Through a topic-linked Creative Journal the course encourages children to get creative. • Adopting a more creative mindset means students become better critical thinkers and problem-solvers. Child-friendly online tools • Our new research-based Practice Extra will help motivate students while encouraging responsible use of digital.

Real-world skills and situations

Literature

Activities are based on real-world skills and situations that students will find engaging and fun.

1 What can you see in the pictures? Talk about what you think is happening.

• All four skills – reading, writing, listening and speaking – are used to explore fascinating topics. 3.15

• Activities scaffold the learning to support both stronger and weaker students.

A good friend

“Can we go and play in the park, Mom?” Oliver asks. “OK,” says Mom. “Come on, Amelia. Let’s go!” Oliver says to his sister. He’s holding his skateboard, and Amelia’s taking her bike to the park. “Goodbye, Dad!” they shout. “Bye, kids!” Dad says. “Have fun!”

• Grammar and vocabulary are developed through communicative activities which have a clear purpose and encourage students to use language naturally. • New language is heard, read, written and spoken as students acquire it and is then consolidated throughout, building as the units progress.

Now they’re in the park. Amelia’s riding her bike around the duck pond, and Oliver’s skateboarding with two boys. They’re ten. Oliver’s only seven, but he’s tall. There’s a boy called Alfie in the park, too. His mom is a friend of Oliver and Amelia’s mother.

Missions The missions are multi-stage projects designed to foster collaboration and communication and make learning transparent and meaningful to learners so they can clearly see the progress they are making. • A new mission is introduced at the start of each unit and carefully integrated throughout the rest of the unit culminating in a final group project.

“Can I play with you, Oliver?” Alfie asks, but Oliver isn’t listening. He’s skateboarding with the other boys. “Can I play with you, Oliver?” Alfie asks again. “I’m skateboarding, Alfie,” Oliver says. “And you don’t have a skateboard!”

• The enquiry-based approach in the missions helps build learning and thinking skills through creativity, critical thinking, problem solving and decision making. Home Booklet

92

• A fun magazine-style book for children to take home, revise what they have learnt in an enjoyable way and share it with their parents. Perfect for fostering the home-school link!

Text type: A real-life story

Literature

1 Talk about what you think happens next in the story. I think Oliver plays with the big boys.

I think Oliver plays with Alfie.

2 Draw the next picture in the story.

3 Look at your drawing. Write a conversation. Oliver: Thank you, Alfie. Alfie:

4 Act out the conversation. Thank you, Alfie.

hey eat wild animals, plants, berries, nuts and insects. They hunt with bows and arrows. There are lots of dangerous snakes, spiders and scorpions. There are lions, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas. It’s one of southern Africa’s hottest places, and there is often no water. Then they have to get their water from plants, for example from desert melons. When they are ill, there are no hospitals. The people have to get their medicine from plants too.

• American Think explores complex issues and thought-provoking topics, fostering a deeper level of engagement.

9 TH E WO N D ER S O F TH E WO R LD

They are the San, the last people living in the Kalahari. The San people have another name –‘bush people’. Their lifestyle is very simple, but they know more about animals and plants than most people do. The San people live in small groups of 25–50. They live in huts – little ‘houses’ that they make from wood and grass. There are no schools for the children. Children learn from the older people in the group. There are lots of things they have to learn so that they can live in a dangerous place like the Kalahari. In the evenings, the groups of people often sit around a fire and tell stories. Many of the stories are about animals and how to hunt them.

• A purposeful focus on critical thinking, positive values, and healthy self-esteem builds lifelong habits of mind.

The Kalahari is a big area of bushland in southern Africa. It has got two parts. There is less rain in the southern part than there is in the northern part, so the south is drier. There are fewer plants and animals there, and it’s a lot more difficult for people to live. But when it rains at the end of the summer, the land becomes greener and more beautiful. For a few weeks, there are millions of little flowers and even butterflies! But soon, the grass and the bushes get dry and turn brown. Then life becomes more difficult again for people and animals.

READING 1 Look at the photos. Which of the animals can you name in English?

• Culture lessons encourage students to think and talk about life in other countries and how it compares with their own.

2 Name other animals in English. Write them down. 3

SPEAKING Work in pairs. Look at the animals on your list. What countries do you think of?

The bush people get their water from the river. When the San people are ill, they get medicine from a hospital. The bush people teach children important things about living in the Kalahari. The north of the Kalahari is wetter than the south. There are more animals and plants in northern Kalahari. A holiday in the Kalahari is never dangerous.

Valuing our world 1 Read and tick (✓) the statements that show that the natural world is important. 1

Every year, thousands of tourists from all over the world visit the Kalahari. They love driving around the bushland in open jeeps. They love watching the wild animals. Their guides are often San bushmen and the tourists love listening to their stories about the wonders of the Kalahari. The tourists stay in small huts called ‘lodges’. They have comfortable beds and showers, but there is no electricity in the huts. When they go out of their hut, they have to be very careful. Sometimes there are lions or leopards around!

2

Why should I want to go on a safari? There’s a nice zoo in my city where I can see lots of animals. I want to build a hotel for 800 people in the Kalahari Desert. We can make a lot of money like that. It’s great to learn about wild animals. It helps me to understand more about the world. Who needs lions, leopards and hyenas? They’re dangerous animals and that’s it! I watch a lot of nature programmes on TV. I support a project to save the tiger in India.

SPEAKING

Compare your ideas in pairs.

Statement 1 shows that the natural world is not important for this person. Why do you think that? Because the person doesn’t want to see wild animals in nature. But maybe that’s not true. Maybe he or she thinks flying to other places is not good for nature. 85

6 Levels 90–120 teaching hours

Evolve is a general English course that gets students speaking with confidence.

A1 A2 B1 B1+ B2 C1

This student-centered course covers all skills and focuses on the most effective and efficient ways to progress in English.

Peer models (Levels 1–4) • Levels A1–B1+ feature short videos of real student ‘peer models’ talking about topics in the Student’s Book.

What makes Evolve special? • Peer models and content from real students.

• These videos provide achievable speaking role models to prompt speaking in class and are easily accessed by scanning a QR code.

• Bite-sized learning and mobile phone activities for inside and outside the classroom. • Dedicated speaking lessons based on immersive tasks.

Expert speakers (Levels 5–6)

• Integrated teacher development in the Teacher’s Edition.

• Levels B2–C1 feature highly proficient non-native speakers of English who live and work in the United States.

“Fantastic! Students who are normally shy spoke naturally because they had more time to develop their speaking.”

• Videos and ideas from these expert speakers give students authentic content to respond and react to.

María Azucena Rivera, Teacher, Mexico

Speaking matters

You spoke. We listened. Students told us that they most enjoy material which is relevant to their lives and thought-provoking. Teachers told us that they wanted material which motivates and enthuses their students. Therefore, Evolve prioritizes cognitively-engaging activities over mechanical practice and includes critical thinking in every skills lesson.

1.5 A

DECIDE Answer the questions with what you think. (Answers are at the bottom of the page.) Are you surprised? 1 Imagine you have a group of 23 people. What is the probability that two people have the same birthday? a 50% b 23% c 0.056% 2 Imagine you have a group of 30 people. What is the probability that two people have the same birthday? a 25% b 70% c 4% 3 Now imagine you have 60 people. What is the probability that two people have the same birthday? a 50% b 10% c 99%

B

AGREE Think of your answers to the questions below.

Dedicated speaking lessons • Based around immersive tasks that involve information sharing, problemsolving, and decision making, ‘Time to Speak’ is a lesson dedicated entirely to developing speaking skills.

TIME TO SPEAK Things you have in common

LESSON OBJECTIVE ■

talk about what you have in common

Then ask and answer the questions in a small group. When you have something in common with another person, put a check (✓). Where are your grandparents from? When is your birthday? How many brothers and sisters do you have? What’s in your bag? What is your favorite possession? Who’s your favorite famous person? Are you the first/second/third-born child? How many friends do you have on Facebook? What city are your parents from?

• ‘Time to Speak’ creates a buzz in the classroom where speaking can really thrive, evolve, and take off, resulting in more confident speakers of English. • Research shows that students learn better in contexts where they feel confident, motivated, supported, and able to experiment with language. Evolve helps teachers create a safe speaking environment in which students have space to develop their speaking skills freely.

C

Count the checks in your group. Tell the class what you and the others in the group have in common. How many people have the same birthday in your group? In the class?

D

DISCUSS Work in groups of four. Find more things you have in common and write the information below. Use the questions and phrases at the bottom of the page to help you. 3 Two people 1 Everyone 2 Three people 4 One person

E

PRESENT Read your sentences to the class. Don’t say the names! Can they guess who the people are?

Designed for success To check your progress, go to page 153.

Answers: 1 a 2 b 3 c

• ‘Accuracy check’ targets common learner errors. It can be used as a self-editing checklist and helps students learn to actively avoid common errors in their written and spoken English.

USEFUL PHRASES

• ‘Insider English’ focuses on the informal language and colloquial expressions frequently found in everyday situations, boosting students’ confidence in the real world.

DECIDE I think … Because … Do you agree?

AGREE Me, too! / Same here! Not me. / I don’t.

DISCUSS What’s your favorite … ? Do you like … ? What’s your … called? How many … do you have?

Do you have a/an … ? When is … ? Where are your … from?

10

• The ‘Pronunciation’ sections highlight the aspects of speaking and listening the most affect communication, meaning pronunciation work in class is maximized. • ‘Register check’ helps students to transition confidently between written and spoken English and recognize how to use different levels of formality appropriately.

Bite-sized learning and mobile phone activities Choose the correct words to complete the conversation.

Teacher development

00:38

• Evolve integrates professional development into every unit of the Teacher’s Edition. This unique approach offers regular opportunities to reflect and try out new teaching techniques, enabling teachers to develop as they teach.

01:26

Do you have some cash

Yes. I have about twenty dollars.

International / Bilingual Education English as a Second Language (ESL) At Cambridge University Press we provide resources to support you, and your students, as they develop the skills to study in English from pre-primary to pre-university. Cambridge Global English (Starters to Stage 9) provides cross-curricular content for primary and lower secondary learners. Introduction to English as a Second Language prepares lower secondary learners for the challenges they will face as 14–16 year olds. We offer an unbeatable choice for Cambridge IGCSETM* with a full range that now includes exam preparation and practice resources. Literacy is supported through original and traditional literature at both primary and secondary.

Cambridge Global English Starters Stories, stickers, songs and games make developing English skills fun for young learners. Topics, such as ‘feelings’ and ‘the classroom’, introduce children to skills that are essential for learning other subjects in English, like phonics and letter formation. Drawing, matching and sticker activities help children develop

early critical-thinking and comprehension skills, while songs and chants improve their speaking and listening skills. This introductory course gives your class all the skills they need to confidently begin learning in English at Grade 1.

Cambridge Primary Develop learner’s English, maths and science skills through practical activities on diverse topics from light and dark to ancient civilisations. The Cambridge Primary series is specifically written for students learning in a bilingual or CLIL context, with additional grammar and vocabulary support. These resources are suitable for Stages 1–6 and support the Cambridge Primary curriculum framework. To find out more visit cambridge.org/primary Cambridge Primary Maths

Cambridge Global English 1–9 Written specifically for ESL learners, with clear language, helpful visuals and grammar and vocabulary support.
