CAMBRIDGE SPANISH FOR SCHOOLS 2019 Catalog
Since we printed our first book in 1534, Cambridge University Press has continuously published materials that unlock people’s potential with the best learning and research solutions. In 2014, we partnered with Editorial Edinumen, a prestigious ELE (Español Lengua Extranjera) publisher, with a global reputation for quality and innovative methodology that complimented our approach to English language teaching. We have come together with a shared vision – to impact the teaching of the Spanish language to students in the U.S., helping them acquire the skills necessary for fluent communication. With a 25-year history that grew out of their successful private school, Edinumen is a publisher specialized in creating materials for learning and teaching Spanish as a foreign language. With over 400 publications in use around the globe, Edinumen provides complete solutions that combine the best content with modern learning platforms and a student-centered approach. Edinumen has been a worldwide pioneer in the creation of different materials for learning Spanish with a commitment to research and supporting the ongoing professional development of teachers. Our partnership has produced a full line of Spanish language materials for learners at every age – from the very start of their language journey in elementary school to more advanced study at the college level. With the support of Edinumen, we have realized our goal to create a series of programs that are fully accessible to the modern learner in a range of different formats. We are certain this partnership will impact the Spanish language learning community through quality content and innovation – helping learners communicate in Spanish in an ongoing, practical way.

WHAT MAKES OUR SPANISH COURSES SO SPECIAL? How did you learn to ride a bike? Did you sit in a chair while someone explained the fundamentals of bike riding to you, or did you go outside and give it a try yourself? Did you get better by memorizing a set of expert techniques, or did you suffer a few skinned knees until you improved? Whether it’s riding a bike or learning a language, people learn best by doing! Out-of-context grammar and vocabulary skills or exercises designed to perfect isolated language functions can be difficult to use when you want to express yourself or understand something new. Even more importantly, this kind of instruction can make us forget Spanish is a living language that people speak creatively and individually all over the world. Our secondary courses support communicative, empowered learning through these five instructional pillars:
Inductive Learning Students are invested in the inductive learning approach from the first page of every unit. The motivation for students to learn vocabulary and grammar is driven by the language functions the students will need in order to talk about subjects they care about. Inductive learning helps students deepen their understanding of language through discovery and inference, keeping students actively involved.
Real-Life Learning Real-life learning gives immersive, relatable scenarios and provides a framework for communication. Gone are the days when students were required to listen, memorize, and repeat in preparation for a vastly different workforce than the one we have today. Nurturing in-depth understanding and a passion for connection, our programs maximize real-world learning experiences to develop the skills needed to communicate in a rapidly evolving world.

Learning Strategies Learning strategies reinforce learning as students understand the processes and methods that work best for them. Working smarter with self-developed strategies can have a profound influence on learning outcomes. Students who have developed these skills better exploit classroom-learning opportunities and can more easily expand their language learning outside the classroom.
Social and Emotional Relevance Social and emotional relevance increases students’ motivation to learn a language, boosting acquisition and retention. Research shows that engaging students increases their attention and focus, motivating them to practice higher-level critical thinking skills, and promotes meaningful learning experiences. By tapping into their interests while embedding speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills to achieve learning objectives, we bring the Spanish language to life.
Cultural and Intercultural Learning Cultural and intercultural learning builds cultural awareness while teaching authentic, global communication skills. By calling attention to the rich diversity of Spanish-speaking cultures around the world, Mundo Real engages students by helping them have a wider vision of the world. It is as important to learn how and when to use a language as it is to learn the language itself, and the different ways in which the Spanish-speaking world communicates is a focus of our programs.

Activity 14 In this activity, students write a letter of intent based on what they have learned so far in this section. They can choose one of the courses described or any others that you might feel it necessary to propose as options, based on students’ interests and backgrounds. However, before they write, you may want to start off with the activity in IWB 4.2, which focuses on the structure of such a letter. Project the chart and ask students to go back to the letter in Activity 8 and identify the different parts based on the information provided. You can keep this projected while students write their letters so students can refer to it for assistance. IWB 4.2 LA CARTA DE MOTIVACIÓN: ESTRUCTURA

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES Activity 13 This is a vocabulary-based activity. It includes phrases that are commonly used in letters of intent, which students might be able to use down the road. Once students have read the sentences, ask them to go back to the letter in Activity 8, re-read it, and find the equivalents of these phrases in the text. They can deduce the meanings of these in context, but they can also use the dictionary if they have difficulty with them. Possible Answers: a. Ofrecerme; e. Empezar mi vida/trayectoria laboral; f. Que están desarrollando; g. Con anticipación; h. Puede contactar conmigo cuando lo desee.
