Partnerships with employers are going from strength to strength and Business students are the 4th most satisfied in the country National Student Survey (2008)

“Chichester and the surrounding area is rich in creative talent. Creative minds have always graduated to places with a good quality of life and the South Coast Design Forum is constantly unearthing local creative talent who want to play a part in the development of the community. It's only natural then for the University of Chichester to launch a Graphic Design Degree Course in partnership with the SCDF, many of whose members run creative businesses along the south coast. Wayne Hemingway Chairman South Coast Design Forum (SCDF)

BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP

W

elcome to the Annual Review Magazine for the Arun Business Partnership. It’s been a busy year for the Partnership and we thought what better way to show you what’s been going on and celebrate the success of the Partnership and individual businesses than through your very own Magazine. Let’s start with our monthly meetings – 3 so far this year, one postponed and rescheduled due to 25 foot high waves, one on 8th December and already around 250 business people have come along, met each other, heard about each others businesses and even worked together! Then our events, Getting to Know You, the Charity Golf Day and last but by no means least the Arun Business Partnership Business of the Year Awards. Have a look through and see just how good these events were and make a note to get involved next year. Talking of getting involved we contact as many of our local businesses as we can on a monthly basis by email. Our email newsletter will keep you up to date with everything but we can only do that if we know your email address! If you aren’t getting your newsletter just let us know by emailing miriam.nicholls@arun.gov.uk and we will add you to our list. As well as the things that happen directly with the Business Partnership there’s also a vast amount of other work going on around you that will help the local economy and you need to know about. Your magazine is also packed full with information about opportunities that could benefit you and your business. In these current times of doom and gloom it’s probably more important than ever that you make the most of any opportunities and that local businesses work together to help each other to stay afloat and where possible flourish. One of the main aims of the Arun Business Partnership is to help that to happen – and we hope that we do! Enjoy reading your Magazine and if you want to know more about the Partnership or you know someone who you think might send them my way, have a look at our web site www.arunbusinesspartnership.co.uk or give me a call on 01903 713436.

T

his is a fantastic achievement and this event continues to highlight what superb businesses we have in this district. It was especially pleasing that so many of the winners and nominees run their businesses from Arun’s business parks! It has been a while since I’ve written an article for this magazine, so it gives me a chance to reflect on what will be remembered as the year that the “bubble burst”. However, I’m not sure it has affected Arun’s Business Park businesses until very recently, with some businesses reporting good months throughout the year. Indeed, in the early part of 2008, businesses locally were doing well and there was a general air of cautious optimism. However, as the crisis deepened and we talked ourselves towards the “R” word, belts have started to be tightened and that has had a knock-on effect to nearly every sector. It seems to be more a case of costs up, orders down.

So where do we go from here? It seems to me to be those willing to change, adapt and innovate are the ones who are taking advantage of any opportunities the Global Community is offering. Going to see suppliers and negotiating a new deal, making sure credit control is bringing in all outstanding invoices and networking at free business to business events are things businesses I’ve spoken to are actively doing to maximise their position. Some Business Park businesses are still bullish and expect that things will turn round soon. Looking forward to next year, times may be tougher than over the last decade, but more stable than of late. I’d like to finish in a positive way by reminding you that, in Arun, there are free business support services available. read more...

So as we move inexorably to the end of 2008, I just want to say a massive thank you to the Business Park businesses that have supported the Business Parks projects this year, and wish you a safe and happy festive holiday.

Firstly, I’d like to take this opportunity to say congratulations to all those businesses that have been nominated for or won an Arun Business Partnership Award this year.

Andy Handson Case Study “Accessing Business Link’s free Start up Services was hugely worthwhile when I started my own business” Andy Handson of Felpham Framers, Bognor Regis fter 30 years in the motor industry, Andy felt in need of a change. It wasn’t until he did a week’s picture framing course at West Dean College that he realised what direction this change would take. “I have always loved art,” said Andy. “I had a few prints that were in a terrible state with the frames all falling to pieces, and took them along to West Dean College. I had a fantastic time and thought it was something I should look into.” Over the next two years, Andy considered his change of career carefully. Whilst working managing a busy sales department he looked at the local art market, researched the competition and indulged in a bit of mystery shopping to find out more about the framing industry do’s and don’ts. “I worked long hours, 6 days a week,” continued Andy. “Although the sales floor is a dynamic and busy place to be, I didn’t get to see much of my wife Sue as she also works full time. I wanted to work at my own pace and have more control of my life.” After finally quitting his job, Andy saw an advert in the Bognor Regis Observer featuring free Start up courses Business Link was running. “I’d never heard of them before,” explained Andy “But it was just too good an opportunity to miss.” Andy’s Business Link advisors suggested that he joined the Arun Business Partnership and attend a series of networking events to meet other local entrepreneurs. “It really helped me to meet other people who were in the same boat,”

A

said Andy. “Going from a busy sales floor to working on my own was quite a startling change. It took some time to adapt – you need a lot of self discipline as it is easy to waste a day doing nothing and it can also get quite lonely. Having meetings with a business advisor and setting targets to hit gives your time much more structure.” Next on Andy’s agenda is qualifying for his Association of Fine Art Trade Guild exams in picture framing. They set the industry standards and will allow him to branch out into textile framing and conservation, which is a particular interest he shares with his wife Sue. She works as a lecturer in textile art at Chichester College. “My workshop will shortly be finished in our garden,” said Andy. “I will be able to look out over the lawn from my work bench – it’s a great feeling. My relationship with Sue has completely changed as we have much more time to spend together. I would recommend anyone starting a business to contact your local Business Link. I discovered that I actually had many of the skills I needed for my new job, despite using them in a totally different industry. My business advisor has helped me translate them from one to the other and my framing business is on an excellent footing as a result.”

Being a nation of small-medium size businesses, accounting for government policy to encourage and support new business start ups.

Gareth Sear

S

MEs are crucial to the UK economy, accounting for 56% of the UK nongovernmental jobs and 52% of turnover*2 with many small businesses making a vital contribution to innovation, as originators of new ideas and technologies. Business Link exists to support new businesses from conception to fruition, as well as supporting those which are well established. Statistically, only 27% of new businesses*3 survive past three years of trading, why? Common misconceptions when starting out are: “I will make lots of money” or “I’ll be able to spend more time with my family”

THINK AGAIN!! Starting a new business is both exciting and rewarding, but also full of challenges. It is wise not to under-estimate the level of commitment you will need. Of paramount importance is to have a passion for what you’ll be doing, coupled with a strong belief that your product or service can fulfil a real need in the market place. Despite my gruelling statistics, starting a business need not be as complex, demanding or costly as people think. Peter Drucker, Business Consultant said: “Wherever you see a successful business, someone once made a courageous decision.” So, to minimise risk, know what you personally want to achieve and have a clear vision of your long term aims and objectives. Evaluate the reality of your vision and be absolutely clear of the sacrifices you will make, particularly in the formative period. Your passion, commitment and enthusiasm should well out weigh any sacrifice.

SO TO WORK How do you know if your business idea will work?

YOU DON’T! But self-confidence, determination and perseverance, coupled with unwavering optimism will give you a good start.

Focus on your customers • Define your customer profile. • Consider how you will attract them over your competitors. • Identify their needs and wants. • Provide a product or service your customers will value. • Implement a strategy to retain those customers

Be aware of the competition • Develop a unique selling proposition. • Learn from the competition. • Ensure there is sufficient demand in the market for your business to survive. • Provide a better, faster and more efficient service. • Sustain a competitive pricing policy. • Trade as a niche player if your product or service is less price sensitive, thus allowing you a greater profit margin.

Winning sales • Identify where most sales are likely to originate. • What are the drivers that will make customers want to buy from you? • Analyse trends and forecasts. • Develop and implement an effective marketing strategy to attract new customers. • Diversify your sales approach and stand out from the crowd. • What value of sales do you need to achieve to ensure your time and the value of orders are profitable? • Negotiate to secure prime contracts. Financial success • How will you raise the capital in order to start your business? • Have you identified the right price comparison required to deliver the product or service? • Ensure a sufficient profit margin in your product or service for the business to survive. • Calculate the fixed and variable costs in

relation to the breakeven. • Determine the length of time it will take for the business to go into profit. • Can the business sustain your personal aspiration for earnings? • Determine the outlay required in relation to the return on investment?

Answered these questions? Then your idea is proving to be viable Consider now some of the resources required: Premises, Staff, Equipment, Transport, Technology and Communications Now prepare a profit and loss forecast to include the overheads and expenditure required to get started. Conduct market research and write a business plan to further help identify the reality of your business, (this is also a must when approaching the bank). It is always wise to seek professional advice when starting your own business and Business Link offers free introductory workshops, soon to be available in Arun also. The workshops will help you decide whether you have what it takes whilst providing an insight into the realities of starting a new business. LOCAL SCHOOLS PROGRESS TO NEXT ROUND OF ARUN ENTERPRISE CHALLENGE

ight across the UK, local businesses, schools and colleges are working together to benefit young people, business and the future economy. Here in West Sussex the Education Business Partnership (EBP) works to develop these vital links, helping local young people get better prepared for work and giving employers the opportunity to influence the development of their future workforce. Jacqui Scerri, EBP Coordinator for Worthing, Littlehampton and Adur has lots of experience in bringing business and education together in innovative ways. “I’ve been involved in lots of projects ranging from employers providing case study materials to spending the day with

nearly 400 students working with local business people to develop their entrepreneurial skills. “It’s great to see how businesses can help bring learning to life, inspire young people and give them a real insight into the world of work. And business volunteers benefit too. They enjoy taking part for different reasons – including the fresh perspective young people can bring to a business challenge. Their energy and enthusiasm is infectious.”

oung entrepreneurs from across Arun survived the dragon’s den and progressed to the next round of a business-based competition last Friday (5 December). Around 85 secondary school students from across the district took part in the exciting second round of the Arun Enterprise Challenge and impressed local business leaders with their branding skills. Four schools – Littlehampton Community School, The Angmering School, Bognor Community College and Felpham Community College – took between two and four teams of students to the Flying Fortress in Ford to compete in the latest challenge. The teams were asked to come up with a new name, logo and slogan for a brand of trainers with the help of local business experts, and then present their business case to the judges. A winning team from each school was then chosen and the students were rewarded with a place in the next round of the competition, to be held in spring 2009. Winning ideas included comfortable footwear for elderly people, including microwaveable insoles, and trainers for young people that include blue tooth technology in the heels. Chris Shephard, Business Parks Coordinator for the Council, helped to organise the event. He said: “It was a fantastic day and we were all incredibly impressed by the students’ business-like attitude and focus, as well as their creativity. Based on a successful pilot by Littlehampton Community School, the Arun Enterprise Challenge has been developed by the Arun Business Partnership, Barclays Bank plc, Bognor Regis Community College and the Education Business Partnership. The final winners will receive their award at the prestigious Arun Business Awards 2009.

Suited and Booted Tuesday 20th November 2008

A

s part of National Enterprise Week and a whole-school Enterprise Day held on Tuesday 20th November, 150 Littlehampton College students took part in a ‘Suited and Booted’ conference. The aim of the conference was to offer an enterprising insight into the world of work and to equip the students with the important interpersonal skills that they all need in the real world after College, whether they set up their own business, work for someone else or go on to University. The project started three years ago with the support of some funding from SEEDA and help from Gareth Sear from the Arun Enterprise Gateway. Now it has become an integral part of the College calendar and has been incorporated into the sequence of three Roddick Conferences that the College deliver each year for their students. After a business style breakfast welcome, Karen Wilson, ‘Face 2 Face with Finance’ Regional Coach for NatWest Bank started the day by talking about the importance of managing debts and keeping control of finances. The students were then split in to workshop groups to learn how to make a good first impression, to look confident

and to network successfully, even in a room full of strangers. The workshops, kindly run by volunteers from local businesses, were interactive and challenging. We would like to say a big thank you to the organisations who gave us their time and expertise: Jane Vrettos from Milentos, Miriam Nicholls from Arun District Council, Deborah Naylor from JD Training and Development Ltd, Annette Denby from Reg and Ruby, Ben Bonetti from Empower Your Life, Gareth Sear from Enterprise Gateway, Chris Shephard from Arun District Council and Steve ParmarGreaves from Parmar Staffing. All the techniques for success that the students learned in the workshops were put to good use in the Speed Networking Session that followed. Miriam Nicholls from the Arun Business Partnership hosted the session, with more guests from local businesses joining us. The students quickly got used to the quick-fire rounds and found out as much as they could from their business guests and their student colleagues. Some had real ‘lightbulb’ moments where a contact made could have far-reaching potential. For example, one student, hoping to set up his own web development company, took the card of

Gareth Sear in order to get some new business start-up advice. Another student with ambitions to develop a business importing goods from the far-east took the card of Deborah Naylor from JD Training and Development as Deborah had for years run her own enterprise importing watches. The atmosphere was superb and students and guests had great fun introducing each other to the whole group and taking part in the business card ‘raffle’ to win a bottle of something bubbly. Rob and Ben from the Sussex Academy of Music closed the day for us with a short presentation about their exciting new business. And now for what the people said… “Learnt how to start conversation with new people”. “Got to meet new people and see what it’s like in the ‘business world”. Some quotes from the businesses: We met over twenty students during the session, all varying widely in their interests, aspirations and goals; but without exception, every one was entering in to the spirit of the event which helped make it the success it undoubtedly was. You and they should be proud.

MEs are vital to our economy accounting for more than half of all employment within the country and about half the UKs business turnover. Approximately 33% of these companies are to be found in London and the South East. Research by HSBC earlier this year found that suppliers are billing quicker and fewer companies are paying within agreed payment terms. The Federation of Small Businesses also found that larger firms have been delaying invoice payments to SMEs. The current credit crunch has done nothing to ease this situation. When small businesses have to wait longer for payment and bills are coming in quicker then they can find themselves under a great deal of pressure. If the situation is not dealt with it can very quickly become unsustainable. Talking about the current situation, Adrian Wood, Head of Commercial in Worthing & Chichester said: “The best time to get advice on finances is before you need it. Many SMEs have become

the Money... reliant on their savings or overdrafts to fund big purchases or to combat problems with cash-flow. A lot of companies are turning to their credit cards to fund their business investment. There are usually better solutions to fund a business than using overdrafts or personal wealth. Invoice finance can remove the problems caused by late payments or debt collection. When borrowing for growth asset finance can help companies to capitalise on their assets. In the current climate businesses need to talk to their bank to get financial advice and find solutions, this allows business owners to do what they do best and run their companies. Our local relationship managers understand the financial needs of smaller businesses even those operating on a global stage and are able to help them find the best solutions to keep their finances in order.” read more...

Solicitors are not cheap and besides you do not have time to get embroiled in a court case you are far too busy trying to run a business. In any case your debtor might concoct a convincing “cock and bull” story and succeed in persuading the court they have a sustainable defence or counterclaim in which case you could face the triple whammy of not getting the money you are owed but also end up paying the debtor’s legal costs as well as your own solicitor’s costs. Income Tax The temporary personal allowance of £6,035 has become permanent. Those earning over £150,000 a year will face a new 45% tax band from April 2011. In the same vein, April 2010 will see restriction in the personal allowance for those earning £100,000 or above. Those on £150,000 and over will receive no personal allowance at all.

wo things count when you are looking for an accountant to take care of your business and your personal financial affairs: a sensibly priced service and someone you can trust. All accountants offer audit and tax services, and most have competitively priced fees, but how do you know whether the firm you have chosen can meet your future needs? If your business has expanded, the size of the accountancy firm you use may be critical. The breadth of experience and level of expertise on offer could be the difference between the success and failure of your company. Locally based accountants, Moore Stephens, believe they have the answer. As one of the largest accounting and consulting networks in the UK, with offices managed by partners who live and work in the local business community, clients get the best of both worlds: a personal service that combines national expertise with in-depth local knowledge and experience. What this actually means revolves around three key factors.

Employer and employee contributions are to go up 0.5 pence from April 2011 The starting point for national insurance will now match that for income tax.

Income Shifting It has been announced that now is not the time for this legislation.

Non – Domicillaries The controversial rules came into effect from 6 April 2008, broadly as previously announced.

VAT The standard rate of VAT is to be cut by 2.5% to 15% the lowest level allowed under EU law - with effect from 1 December 2008. The reduction will apply for 13 months, returning to 17.5% from 1 January 2010.

Capital Gains Tax To find out how Moore Stephens can make a difference to your business, contact our office in Chichester or visit: www.moorestephens.co.uk

The new capital gains tax regime, including an 18% flat rate and Entrepeneurs’ relief started on 6 April 2008.

Corporation tax rate The planned increase in the small company rate of corporation tax will not now happen from 1 April 2009. The increase has been deferred until 2010. This change had not yet been included in legislation, so Finance Bill will once again set the small company rate at 21%, and thus the marginal rate will remain 29.75% on profits in excess of £300,000, assuming no associated companies.

Loss relief extension There is an extension of loss relief available to businesses allowing a three year carry back of up to £50,000 of trading losses for both income and corporation tax. However the rules will operate differently in the two taxes.

Company cars The information on the new capital allowances rules for cars is now available. It is now possible for companies to start to make decisions about when to replace company cars. For further information on any of the above points please email: info@harmerslater.biz

BUSINESS CORNER PROACTIVE ACTION

Proactive action, At the time of writing this article, there’s turmoil in the high street

O

ne of the UK’s best known brands – Woolworths – has careered into administration. MFI has followed suit. Companies large and small are looking at their supply chains and customer bases, wondering: will I be next? While there’s a strong argument for saying that Woolworths only had itself to blame (lack of response to a changing marketplace, being out-done by supermarket chains etc), there can be no doubt that the current volatility is almost without precedent. And yet, when the news reports are running their tales of doom and gloom, few mention the engines of the UK economy – the small businesses which make up an incredible 58% of the UK private sector workforce. Yes, times are hard out there and the major news is always going to be given to the brand names that we all knew and loved, but it’s criminal that the small business is so often overlooked, its plight almost forgotten in the wave of crumbling big names. On a local level, yes, attention is being given to the smaller firm – many of whom are well known and loved in their local communities. But it does seem that the national agenda is overlooking them somewhat. This is where the Federation of Small Businesses comes into play – they’re the UK’s largest campaigning pressure group promoting the interests of the 58% of the economy composed of SMEs. They have recently published a range of reports designed to make the Government sit up and take real notice of the country’s true

powerhouse. The reports, all branded under the heading “Putting the Economy Back On Track” deal with five key areas:

• Business Support and Finance • Transport, Environment and ICT • Skills and Training • Crime against Businesses • Work life balance. In this article, we’ll take a quick look at each topic and how they apply to the Arun business environment.

The last two are quite short. Crime against Businesses highlights the fact that 64% of businesses were the victims of crime over a twelve month period – up from 54% in 2006. Crime costs, there’s no doubt about it and the FSB is urging all local policing teams to put crime against business at the heart of their strategic priorities. Although the Arun Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership hasn’t currently got business crime in its strategic priorities 2008 – 2011 document, they will always listen to the concerns of local

businesses and take appropriate action. On a local level, industrial estates in Arun have been working on their own security solutions to safeguard their workplaces and assets in the face of increased crime levels (Chris Shephard has more details of these and can be contacted through your partnership website). The work life balance was a subject that we discussed in a previous edition of The Magazine, and the article can be read on the Business Partnership website (go to The Magazine, General Business and the article is called See-

The FSB are highlighting in this section of their report the severe pressures small business owners are under (losing their homes or becoming bankrupt if their business fails), but that also self-employment can be a viable route into work for people struggling to find work elsewhere. It is a balance that must be maintained, and it’s often talked about but overlooked. If you are finding this balance hard to maintain, have a look at the article on your website for a few thoughts... read more...

BUSINESS CORNER QUICK FACTS

QuickFacts

Short sharp and to thepoint

Do you have a small business that’s been affected by the crunch? Here are five things you can do to keep your firm afloat.

I

f you run a small business, you probably heaved a sigh of relief at this week’s 1.5% base rate cut. According to the Federation of Small Businesses, the cut amounts to a saving for small firms of around £750 million on loans and overdrafts. Of course, this will only happen if lenders actually pass on the full rate cut something they’ve been notoriously bad at doing in the past. And many banks - having tucked the government’s £500 billion support package firmly under their belts - are now being shamefully intransigent when it comes to offering credit to small firms in need. So, in the midst of all the economic gloom, what can small businesses do to save themselves? And what will make the difference between the firms that survive and those that don’t? Here, we’ve outlined six action points that should help keep your business afloat. 1. Find the best business bank account First of all, make sure you have the best business bank account you can get. The charges levied by some can really mount up, and now is definitely not the time to be spending more than you need to. Every small business will have its own unique set of requirements, but factors to consider when you’re shopping around include:

• Does the account offer free day-to-day banking - and how long will this last? • What interest rate will you get when in credit? • Is there a monthly charge for the account? • Are there minimum balance and maximum monthly transaction limits? • How can you access and manage the account (in branch/phone/internet)? • What is your overdraft facility and how much will it cost you? You can use the British Bankers’ Association Business Account Finder (provided by Moneyfacts) to find the right business bank account for you. THE MAGAZINE 18

2. Optimise cashflow If you’re having trouble getting payment from clients, tighten up your payment terms. For example, make it clear that interest will be charged at a certain rate if invoices are not paid within 30 days. Also try to set up ways of bringing money in when you’re not working (passive income streams). For example, you could earn money by displaying relevant Google ads on your company website, using Google AdSense. If you have a serious problem with clients not paying you, it may also be worth joining the Federation of Small Businesses so you can take advantage of the legal services it provides to help you chase the money you’re owed. 3. The right kind of advertising If you’re struggling financially, you might be tempted to stop spending on advertising completely. In fact, you may be better off re-targeting your efforts. • First and foremost, make sure you understand exactly who your customers are and target them specifically. Don’t rely on luck - a scattergun approach could cost an awful lot and produce very little return. So think about where your customers live, what they read, what interests them, how old they are and whether they tend to be men or women. • Once you know all this, you can decide on what advertising medium will be most effective in actually reaching them. For example, think about whether direct marketing (like leaflet drops) or email contact is likely to appeal to them most or annoy them the least! • If you haven’t already, make the internet your friend. These days, most people use it as their first port of call when tracking down shops, goods and services, so if you don’t have an effective web presence you’re at an enormous disadvantage. Get to grips with the basics of web marketing. If you’re not web-savvy, this could be a bit daunting, but try to get

your head around what drives web traffic and how to use SEO (search engine optimisation) techniques. In a nutshell, these are actions that don’t cost much to implement but could hugely increase the number of people that visit your company’s website. Don’t forget to add your FREE business entry to www.arunbusinesspartnership.co.uk and talk to the team about our new monthly promotional service. 4. Adapt to conditions The most successful businesses are usually those that evolve to keep pace with their surroundings. Think about how yours can develop and re-focus to accommodate people’s changing needs in the current economic climate. For example, can you target sectors that are ‘recession-resistant’? Think about the requirements people will always have, however stretched they are financially. Also find out which end of your market is doing well, then focus all your energies on it. In many sectors it may be best to target either very high-end OR budget buyers, as demand for middle-range goods and services rapidly falls away. 5. Make the most of the downturn To put it bluntly, competitors’ failed businesses present you with an opportunity. If you’re canny - and particularly if the service you provide is essential - you could soon corner a far bigger market share. In even the worst economic climate, there are always some customers who keep spending. You’ve got to make sure they can find you if and when their previous supplier of goods or services goes under.

1. Understand the markets So, if you possibly can, keep spending on carefully-thought-out, well-targeted marketing. You may be able to negotiate better rates for your adverts, because as other companies stop spending in this area, advertisers will be increasingly desperate to keep your business. In other words, ‘if you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs’…you may even be able to make the recession work for you. Don’t forget that the Arun Business Partnership undoubtedly has companies that can help with all of the above. If you need help in a particular area have a look at www.arunbusinesspartnership.co.uk or email Miriam.nicholls@arun.gov.uk and we will try to point you in the right direction.

Business-to-business markets can be surprisingly rigid and inflexible, especially where there’s a lack of competition. Take the case of business banking. In 2002, the Competition Commission declared that the Big Four banks were operating a ‘complex monopoly’ which tolerated excessive profiteering from small business customers. Although a ruling forced the banks to reduce their fees, transaction charges are in the main still much higher than those paid by individual customers. Knowledge is power: if you’re aware that you’re dealing in an anti-competitive market then you’ll be prepared to negotiate harder. Though it may be difficult to get discounts, your supplier may be prepared to offer alternative benefits such as better credit terms.

2. The ‘business’ product may be the wrong product A lot of products and services aimed generally at ‘business’ may be unsuitable for your own company, especially if they’re tailored more for large corporations. For example, most business phone tariffs are priced to benefit the high-spending, so a light business user can often end up paying more than a consumer who makes the same quantity of calls. Also, just because something is marketed to consumer rather than business customers doesn’t necessarily mean it isn’t available to everybody – and it doesn’t harm to ask. Bear in mind that cheaper prices may be found in the consumer range, where sales volumes are higher, margins lower, and competition for your pound a little fiercer. WHERE YOU SEE: read more... visit: www.arunbusinesspartnership.co.uk for the full article

3. DIY Could you do it yourself? When pricing the cost of business services consider how much time and money it would take to do it on your own. A lot of everyday accountancy can be easily picked up from manuals or online guides, so by doing a little reading you could potentially save on hefty professional fees. Of course, you are taking a risk by doing it yourself – and it may be that a good accountant will save you more than he or she costs!

4. Make price the priority Suppliers sometimes perceive their business customers as time-poor and favouring convenience and consistent delivery above price. Shake them from this complacency by researching cheaper options, and then ask them to price match. The best value alternative may not even be that feasible for your size or type of business, but there’s nothing stopping you from using your findings as a benchmark to negotiate with your preferred trading partners.

5. Swapping not spending Money isn’t everything – so try to obtain what you need without recourse to your cheque book. When you’re setting up for the first time in business, being able to get stuff like websites and accounting services in exchange for your expertise could make a big difference to your initial outlay. As a new entrepreneur you’ll doubly benefit through developing your portfolio and growing a network of potential future clients. Make your money-saving marketable. So now you’ve taken an axe to your cost base, don’t be shy in telling everybody: a deserved reputation for prudence can be great PR, just so long as there’s something in it for your customer too. Marks & Spencer’s ‘Plan A’ has made cost-cutting sexy by cleverly spinning waste and energy reduction targets as environmentally beneficial. The M&S shopper gains as his or her green conscience is cleansed. Though in this case the customer benefit can’t be quantified (at least so long as smugness can’t be measured!), the strategy fits for a company focused on quality above price. In an economy where value trumps everything else however, you might do better putting the difference saved directly back into customers’ pockets. Prudence is definitely back.

QUICK FACTS

Over the last decade, ‘prudence’ was a term often used by Gordon Brown to describe a frugal approach to financial matters. It’s the type of thrifty mindset that’s become fashionable, if not absolutely necessary in the current economic climate. The credit crunch has certainly made consumers focus on value for money. Just compare the latest half-year profit figures of upmarket John Lewis (down 27%) with value retailer Morrisons (up 13%) to see how this shift in behaviour has happened both quickly and dramatically. Coaster Coffee Coaster Coffee was started in June 2007 by Sid (Alec Siddall) to provide a personal service in the tea and coffee market. Sid left the film industry after 20 years to put his feet up, have a rest and a quick coffee! Sid was approached by Freshcafe to become the Sales Manager for the country’s largest independent Fairtrade vending company. When Freshcafe was subsequently sold, Sid set up Coaster Coffee to make sure customers got the level of service they were used to him providing. The first job was to get a coffee that was of the highest quality but also affordable. After years of tastings they knew what they wanted and Coasters ‘Roaster’ came up with a fantastic Colombian Coffee that has proved very successful – “our customers get compliments every day about their coffee”.

Sid is passionate about Fair Trade and says “One thing that people get confused about Fairtrade is that we have to buy everything that is produced by a co-operative. Because we give a higher price (nearly double sometimes) we are offered the best quality, what is left is sold on the open coffee market to other coffee companies.” Basically by buying Fairtrade you get top quality every time. Coaster believes in ethics, they realise that by paying a fair price and not exploiting the growers they can have a better working model from the ground up. When people buy Coaster Coffee they are assured that Coaster are not selling Fairtrade as a gimmick it’s what they believe in and a huge additional benefit is that it tastes fantastic! read more...

Free energy? You must be joking?

If there is anything that should be free, surely it should be energy. After all, the sun is the best example of free energy. Vicki Fairman talks to Chris Woolley, from Everest, about ways we can all use the sun to provide energy and reduce our heating bills. Of course the problem with free energy is

how to use it – we all know the sun is a source of free energy but how can we harness the rays to support our day to day needs? The closest most of us ever get to harnessing the power of the sun is getting burnt in the summer!! So what can we do...? “All is not lost,” says Chris, “We have a new product that utilises this power and gives you free energy. And I do mean free!” read more... Frame of mind There was a time, not so long ago, when Theresa Bates couldn’t leave her house. From a hard-working, out-going sort of person with a good social life, she became depressed and anxious, eventually having to give up her job as a data processor and locking herself away. Unable to see a reason to get out of bed in the morning, she was, at one time, seeing a psychiatrist, a psychologist undergoing cognitive behaviour therapy and a social worker. She and husband, Ian, had had a stressful time but there was no reason, that Theresa could see, why she was feeling this way. “All of a sudden I didn’t want to go to work and I started taking days off. The depression and anxiety was terrible and I wasn’t even going outside to take my milk off the step,” she says. “Before I got ill, we were going on holidays, away for weekends and having a social life and then that all stopped and even a family gathering was an ordeal.” Her first steps towards recovery came through regular beach walks with their beloved English Cocker Spaniel. Then Theresa and Ian moved to West Sussex eight years ago leaving everything she was familiar with. After a period of adjustment Theresa attended a centre in Bosham to learn woodwork eventually progressing onto running a picture framing workshop. This Theresa loved, and when it closed two years ago she set about launching a similar company – Frame of Mind. read more... The Solution - Stone Safe Industry Leaders After five years of work, Stone Safe have established their brand in a highly specialist marketplace. There can be nothing more distressing for relatives than visiting a loved one’s grave and finding that the headstone has collapsed. The reasons for the collapse could be due to an unstable soil condition, vandalism or component failure. As the owner of the memorial stone is responsible for the maintenance and stability of the headstone this can also pose a significant health and safety risk, not to mention further expense at a later date. To combat this, Anton Matthews of The Memorial Stone Centre Ltd, Bognor Regis, has designed and developed a memorial stability system named Stone Safe, which comes with an incredible 30-year guarantee (insurance backed) against structural failure. Supported by awards from across the industry and the results of thorough scientific soil testing, the Stone Safe system leads the field in memorial stability and safety. read more...

K & M are specialist independent commercial finance brokers who were established in 1985, mainly as providers of asset finance and leasing. Over the years we have expanded into other areas such as invoice discounting, factoring, commercial mortgages and investment mortgages. We have been members of the National Association of Commercial Finance Brokers (NACFB) for 8 years and must adhere to their strict guidelines. Virtually all of the major banks and commercial lenders are patrons of the NACFB and so we have access to a whole range of products and funds, going from extremely competitive rates from A1 credit ratings through to slightly higher for those with a few CCJs or lack of

accounts etc. We are also members of the Federation of Small Business (FSB). We can obtain very competitive rates and can also provide finance for the person or company who does not have an exemplary credit record. Our panel of funders range from those who will look at relatively risk free proposals and provide very competitive rates, to private lenders who look to underwrite clients perceived to have a higher risk (and not normally acceptable to the high street lender).

The Regis Directory is a small, independent magazine business run by local resident and businesswoman, Anne Clark: I wanted to create a truly local magazine and directory that would help publicise small and medium-sized businesses to local residents. Low cost advertising enables me to offer excellent value to enable them to promote their services to local people. I have lived in the area for nearly 20 years and know it well, but I have enjoyed meeting people I would never have met before – among them many small, independent businesses like mine who need local support from the community. You can’t beat us for value for money and the readers get a quality product. It is truly local, with a range of articles, community events and activities. hen asked if I “fancied hosting the Arun Business awards” I wondered if the evening might be a little stuffy and formal. How wrong could I be? Held at the Butlins Conference centre in Bognor Regis and co hosted by the lovely Miriam Nicholls, the mood of the evening was one of friendly rivalry between some of the best businesses in the district. We started by playing a game of ‘heads or tails’ inviting (or rather insisting!) that everyone put a pound in the pot and decide on the toss of my coin by standing up with their hand on either their head or bottom! After a few throws of the coin we were left with a happy winner of a bottle of champagne and an even happier charity for the homeless who received the money. Then on to the awards proper where everyone in the room helped to lift the expectancy of each prize with a DIY

drum roll before the cream of Arun business were applauded and awarded their trophies. I have to admit to being very impressed by the wide variety of businesses at the awards with everything from Garden Innovations to Tourism at the Beachcroft Hotel, Red Anywhere Catering and their stories of Jamelia’s wedding to holding back the years with Age Defy Serum! With not a single mention of downturns or recession the mood of optimism and looking forward was a great testament to all who were there and without losing sight of the message, a fun time was had by all. Here’s to next year!”

If you didn’t enter the awards this year, then you weren’t in the running for a trophy. Contact Miriam Nicholls on 01903 713436 to find out how you can get yourself in the game for the Business Awards 2009!

Often, our customers need something turned around very quickly, and this is in fact one of our specialities – the last minute job!”

Red Anywhere The Beachcroft Hotel

N With these awards under our belts, the future is looking even brighter! This is our first year in Business and I would like to thank our suppliers, colleagues, friends and all of the team that make RED Anywhere what it is.

ot only did RED Anywhere take home three category awards at this year’s Business of the Year ceremony, but the team scooped the coveted Overall Business of the Year award as well. No other single company has ever gained that many award nominations and wins in the entire history of the event! Dan Clarke MCGB, founder and MD of RED Anywhere said: “I thought we stood a good chance of getting a couple of awards, but to get more “gold medals” than anyone has got before is very pleasing. It’s thanks to the hard work of our staff and our partners that we’ve come this far in so short a time. I’m especially delighted that we won the Website of the Year award as our business is entirely based online and the site is the key and only marketing and communications channel we’ve got. It’s therefore got to be good – and it is thanks to Fresh Egg – as this award confirms!”

Dan had been running a catering business from his restaurant. He wanted to adopt a new business model and go national with it, so building his customer base, and establish an online presence. After consulting with Fresh Egg, Dan moved the business entirely online about 10 months ago. The site and business was launched using a mixture of tactical PPC (Pay per Click) focussing on terms relating to catering and event management and ongoing SEO (including a Blog) to create enhanced brand awareness and an outstanding amount of traffic. As a result RED Anywhere currently ranks third for the term “catering company” in Google. The website yields an average of 5-10 high quality enquiries a day - a level which is typically unheard of in the hospitality industry. Attracting both corporate and private enquiries, RED Anywhere has already secured bookings for over 30 weddings in 2009. Dan concludes: “This is our first year in Business and I would like to thank our suppliers, colleagues, friends and all of the team that make RED Anywhere what it is. Also special thanks to Andy Gamble (Co Director), Will O’Hara (Sous Chef) and Charlie Lovering (Events and Office Co-ordinator). obert Warham from The Beachcroft Hotel wanted to sponsor this award to encourage the recognition and importance of New Businesses within the local economy. With schools and colleges encouraging students to consider a career as ‘an entrepreneur’ and that they can have a viable future working for themselves it is important to recognise the value that new businesses play in the development and future prosperity of the area. Robert said ‘In the current economic climate it is not enough just to have a ‘good idea’! Setting up a new business requires strength of character, determination and support from other local companies and individuals like ourselves’. With Robert having started his business in recent years he felt it important to put this support into action through the sponsorship of this award. Why do we sponsor the Arun Business Partnership Marketing Award? Lots of people and organisations have great product and service ideas but, unless they can communicate them effectively to potential purchasers, the idea will never become a business. At JS Humidifiers, we offer great products and services but the thing that differentiates us from our competitors is that we constantly strive to get that message across to the right people. It works for us, and we like to recognise other local organisations who have the same, dynamic approach. What did we think of the ABP Best Promotions and Marketing Award winner? Very impressed. I have no idea how effective Age Defy Serum is but Denise Bell-King clearly exudes passion for her products and has great confidence in what they can do for her customers. She is evidently unfalteringly energetic in their promotion and has succeeded in establishing a consistent brand image and getting Age Defy Serum and her own name mentioned in many potentially influential places, including the national press. 01903 850200 www.jshumidifiers.com

mplementation of sustainable or “green” development involves planning authorities making difficult choices and assessing trade-offs between social, environmental and economic benefits and impacts, but we can contribute too. Water is essential to human life, yet frequently there is either too much of it in the wrong place, or not enough of it where it is needed but we can contribute positively to environmental sustainability and a greener way of life. Presenting the Green Business of the Year Award to Garden Innovations Limited was not a chore; their practical and affordable solutions to water saving are environmentally friendly and prove again that we can all contribute to greener functionality in our daily lives. Garden Innovations strive and have achieved a range of innovative but practical water saving products which greatly benefit both the gardener and the environment in which we all exist. Chichester, and a keen water enthusiast was delighted to make the Green Award presentation, saying, “I spent several years researching water conservation technology; for example, looking at re-using rainwater and grey water – water from baths and washing machines. One conclusion was “it’s not (just) what you do” but “it’s the way that you do it” and when it comes to technology, simple innovations are often the best – Garden Innovations Limited have

made some excellent, simple innovative products that really will help save water.” The University of Chichester is experiencing rapid change and growth both as an institution offering students the best experience possible and by linking with our neighbours, community and business; developing opportunities for partnerships and relationships not previously attained. It is crucial that as the Campus and the Bognor Regis town and coastal area develop that green issues must be and remain a priority – the University of Chichester works hard to create successful community relationships. Having been in business since 1850, FA Holland are committed to working in and for the local community on a massive range of projects, and the team are delighted that, once again, the Arun business community has recognised their efforts. It’s an exciting time for the FA Holland team at the moment, since they are working under new management and will be having a complete re-brand in the near future. One of the most visible outcomes from this process will be a change of name: the company will soon be known as FA Holland and Sons as it used to be in years past! Added to this, all of the company vehicles and uniforms will be re-branded as well. What won’t change, however, is the FA Holland commitment to their customers and the community that they serve. “The future is very exciting for us,” comments Torquil Morgan. “Although

we are refreshing the company in terms of name and visual branding, we’re still going to be as active in the community as we ever were.” For more information about the new look FA Holland, get in contact with the team on 01903 713 939

:TVV[O [OL `LHYZ H^H` Hello Ladies, This month I am going to share with you ‘the science of Age Defy Serum’ as we head into 2009. What I would like to say is, as a ‘cottage industry’, we are growing great guns – having kickstarted the serum last year with a Woman’s Own Reader Offer in August 2007 – we have attracted the Asian market and Woman’s Weekly alike and ladies re-order, particularly as in a recession, to get 3-4 months out of an anti-ageing skin serum in this marketplace is good value. However, as we use only Palm Oil, Jojoba and Retinol A, the idea was to get away from mineral oil that clogs the pores and if your skin can’t breathe it cannot rejuvenate itself and therefore you age? The product diminishes problems with unevenness of texture, complexion, pigmentation blobs and sun damage. That’s the bottom line. It is interesting that after the age of 35, the ACTH and the adrenal function decreases and the immune system is more liable to stressing of the cells and the DNA ages, cortisol is more unstable and a woman will notice age spots and slackening of their skin – the bounce-back effect is no longer there. If you look at a woman having used oil-based products for 20 years, her skin will have aged faster than a lady using aromatherapy or non-mineral oil products so we do not use parabens or associated ingredients for this reason. A man who shaves with soap and water will usually look 7-9 years younger than his wife as he has not used as many chemicals in his lifetime. Having studied Chinese Herbal Medicine and Homeopathy I knew that the fewer and more natural the ingredients used with an added Retinol anti-ageing increment (to stimulate collagen and elastin) would work wonders on skin from 35 through 105 (and indeed from our YOURS magazine clients, we have some clients in their 90’s!) We tested the product on 58 women just like L’oreal do so we have all the stats that bear out our thesis. We have testimonials from women telling us how ‘their cheeks have ďŹ lled out, their saggy eyelids are ďŹ rmer and the naso-labial lines less ingrained’. The natural cheek lift is achieved by plumping up the skin and sculpting the

elastin and collagen so, we call it our natural lift in a can! Reduction of age spots seem to be the primary focus for most users but frown lines and crĂŠpey turkey-neck, as well as lined decollete, seem to be tackled well with the Age Defy Serum too. Obviously with Retinol A we suggest the use of SPF 30 before going out in the sun as we know the skin is thin on mature women. More from us next month and remember we are giving a free lip plumper and eyelifter pen with EVERY Age Defy Serum you purchase now. Happy lifting, sculpting and plumping for 2009. ARTS & REGENERATION BOGNOR

From good, to great ognor Regis is, in case you’ve missed it, the focus of a massive multi-agency, multi-partner regeneration project designed to restore the town’s faded glory. From the former Lec Refrigeration site, to the Chichester University campus, Bognor Regis is seeing unprecedented levels of interest, activity and investment. Plenty has happened in the last year, but one of the most significant updates is that the former Lec site is going to be redeveloped by Sainsbury’s into a fantastic mixed use site, bringing jobs into the area and returning the retail giant into the town after a gap of almost 20 years. Much of this provision will centre around the employment opportunities inherent in the redevelopment as it won’t just be Sainsbury’s locating here – there’s the scope for other business units to come in as well. This might include the relocation of existing businesses or the delivery of an enterprise centre, helping the area’s small and growing businesses to find firm footings. Away from the Lec site, the University of Chichester Campus is going to have a whole new look as well. In addition to more than doubling the number of students hosted on the campus by 2016, it is hoped that

B

sporting facilities will be in place in time for the 2012 Olympics to help the students, local residents and shining sporting stars make the most of the historic events. Many will have heard much talk about the ‘Leisure Heart’, which can be defined as the Regis site, next to Bognor Regis’ Town Hall. Key to the redevelopment of this area will be a reconnection of the town to the seafront, a rejuvenated promenade and plenty of open, public space. The grand vision, although set in a contemporary context, may be likened to revisiting the resort’s original purpose – somewhere civilised to get away from the hustle and bustle, enjoy the record levels of sunshine and generally improve heath and well-being. Being held up as an example of best practice is testament to the hard work put in by the Bognor Regis Regeneration Task Force, based in the Town Hall and headed up by Richard McMann – who many of you will have met at Business Partnership meetings. The Task Force have been driving the process forward, negotiating with the established and emerging players in the town’s regeneration, as well as keeping local residents and businesses abreast of the latest news. It’s a tough job – but somebody’s got to do it!

With so much going on in the town, there’s been the need for a single point of contact for all news and events to do with the regeneration. This portal has been established by Arun District Council and resides at www.arun.gov.uk/bognorregis. From Lec to Bersted Green Court, it’s all on the website as well as the latest planning applications. Don’t forget to keep checking for the latest updates! Somewhere in the region of £500million is going to be pumped into Bognor Regis in the coming years and, despite the current economic climate, optimism for the town’s future is running higher than ever. The town is looking forward to a future that does its past justice, buoyed by the belief of the District Council and the private sector working together.

Bright future for xciting times lay ahead for Littlehampton as multi-million pound regeneration plans for the town begin to take shape. Following in the successful footsteps of the award-winning East Bank development, the Council is working with partners in both the public and private sectors to rejuvenate the town and cement its image as a top seaside location. As well as contributing to schemes for a new £12 million community hospital, the

proposed £35 million academy school and more affordable housing at Toddington, unprecedented improvements will also be made to key sites, such as the harbour, the seafront and the town centre. Over the coming weeks and months residents will be given the opportunity to have their say on a range of major initiatives, including a new-look seafront. Public consultation will soon begin on the Seafront Strategy, a major project looking at revamping the Littlehampton water

frontage all the way from Mewsbrook Park to Pier Road. Local people will be asked their views on initial plans, including the possibility of a grant-funded, record-breaking cultural project - the UK’s Longest Bench. Positive discussions about rejuvenating the harbour, including a larger focus on leisure provision, have also taken place between the Council and key partners. Residents can look forward to having their say on this joint vision for the harbour

artists Gordon Young and Brian Fell, but also the input of Littlehampton Community School pupils. The project consists of physical waymarkers along the River Walkway, beginning at the Look and Sea! Centre and ending just beyond the Oyster Pond. Each waymarker features a different seafood recipe, providing a vivid and tangible reminder of Littlehampton’s importance as a port in the past. Accompanying the physical installations is a recipe book, linking old and new in the finest culinary traditions! Copies are available to buy from Littlehampton Town Council. Work is now progressing on the final, main, piece of artwork for the Oyster Pond in Littlehampton. The plans are for a piece of interactive artwork – which may take the form of artistic seating or play equipment for children – and an artist will be appointed early in 2009 to take this forward. All of these artworks were made possible by funding from the Arts Council England South East and contributions from various other partners including the Town Councils, the Single Regeneration Budget, Arun District Council, WSCC and Town Centre groups. This resulted in a total pot of just under £150,000 for commissions in the two towns. In these times of instant gratification and fleeting pleasures, it’s delightful to find installations which make one stop a while and reflect on the past, and on the future, of these two great towns.

LITTLEHAMPTON

rt can lift a place, revitalise its soul and add contemporary context to historical features. Over the last couple of years, art has been making its presence known in Littlehampton and Bognor Regis. If you’ve been to Bognor Regis recently, you can’t help but notice the 25-foot Sun Sculpture which rises from the foot of the High Street. Recalling Bognor’s claim to being one of the sunniest places in the entire UK, the sculpture is a talking point not only in the town, but further beyond too. Staying with the Bognor Regis theme, visitors to the town will notice the new railings that surround the weather station. Where once battered, ugly and defunct railings stood, artist Matthew Fedden has replaced them with purpose-designed items which reflect the historical significance of the station, as well as enhancing the local street scene. Across the waters in Littlehampton, the artistic regeneration is no less prominent. The Oyster Waymarker project has been received well and brings together not only the work of

Littlehampton when it is finalised in the New Year. Consultants have recently been engaged to produce a development brief for St.Martin’s Car Park. This area was highlighted in the Littlehampton Vision as an opportunity area. It is expected that the development will provide an increased and enhanced retail offer along with restaurants and some public spaces as well as car parking and a limited amount of residential accommodation. Littlehampton currently suffers from a lack of modern, appropriately sized retail units

and it is expected that take up on these from companies wanting space in the town in modern units will be good and will help other retailers by bringing more visitors into the town centre. Watch the web site and local press for details of public consultation events that will give everyone their chance to say what they think about this. Councillor Norman Dingemans, Chairman of the Littlehampton Regeneration Sub Committee, thinks people in the town have a lot to look forward to:

“The future is extremely bright for Littlehampton,” he said. “These exciting developments all fit into an overall masterplan that ensures nothing happens in isolation. “We really want to put the town back on the map, and by building on the success of projects such as the East Bank, we believe that people will be just as excited and enthusiastic when they see the plans. We are keen for everyone to have their say and hope residents get involved in the upcoming consultations.”

he Arundel Town Festival (ATF) will run from Friday 21st August to Monday 31st August and offers local and national businesses the chance to sponsor an event or show or contribute their time. One of the Festivals aims is to provide quality performances in music, arts and drama. Many of these events are free to locals and visitors alike and involve

the young and old in the community as well as providing educational prospects. Sponsorship can be as little or as much as you can afford and doesn’t neccesarily have to be monetary if your company offers a service or product which can be used during the festival. In exchange there are many promotional and marketing products used to promote the festival which your company could be in! The ATF also provides the chance for your company to get staff involved whether participating or visiting the numerous shows. Please contact Penny Hadleigh to express an interest and a meeting can be arranged on 01903 883779. WHERE YOU SEE: read more... visit: www.arunbusinesspartnership.co.uk for the full article

Wheels 2008 www.wheelsevent.co.uk

An event well worth attending.

From 3 to 5… yetimber Mazda, based in Bognor Regis, came to Wheels 08 and had a truly successful weekend! David Pollock, Sales Manager explains: “Despite the truly appalling weather on the Saturday, we had a large volume of enquiries from the crowds that descended on Littlehampton Seafront – which is really unusual for a show like this. “On the back of these enquiries came four sales directly related to the show – which is a fantastic result and a very welcome surprise. One of these sales came from a family who had previously visited our showroom looking at the Mazda 3 but who, after the show, decided to purchase the stunning Mazda 5 as they were so impressed with the specification. “We’re already looking forward to Wheels 09 as it’s such a productive event to be involved with.” In case you didn’t catch Nyetimber Mazda at Wheels, why not visit their showroom at 33 Chichester Road in Bognor Regis to see the range for yourself? You can also call them on 01243 862468 to chat your requirements through with the team.

Thirdly, and by no means least to showcase local businesses! Lots of local businesses have been involved in both Wheels events and have had only positive results. It’s a great way to get information about your company over to thousands of people over 3 days. If you have a business that is in any way related to anything on Wheels and you would like more details about the 2009 event then call any of the team on 0870 1900 220.

Roger Joy, dealer principal at Newbarn KIA, is a hard man to impress…

Wonderful Wheels! uff Miller, Littlehampton, have been in business for over 60 years and this is the second year that they have attended the Wheels event. “Wheels is different to other motor shows,” comments Martin Cornish Retail Sales Manager. “It is aimed at the family, as you can see from the many different events that are put on throughout the weekend. “As a local Littlehampton dealer, we feel it’s important to get involved with the local community, as well as making sure that we are noticed and getting the Cuff Miller name out.” Cuff Miller find that Wheels is successful for them. This year, they sold a vehicle on the Monday after the weekend, directly from a lead that they had picked up at the show. With such good feedback from their attendance, Martin and his team are quite rightly looking forward to Wheels 2009! When the Wheels marketing team first contacted Newbarn KIA to ask if we would be interested in exhibiting at their 2008 show, we were somewhat under whelmed with enthusiasm. Not because of anything they had done you understand, on the contrary it was our first contact with them. No it was everything to do with our past experience of motor shows. What swayed us towards the Littlehampton show was the fact that it wasn’t just another motor show; it encompassed everything to do with wheels. This was, in our opinion, an innovation of the genre and worth trying. In fact it proved to be well worth attending. To achieve these objectives the show had to deliver and it did in abundance. The whole event was well organised, with an array of exhibits, stands and entertainment that had that all important “good feel” factor. If Wheels 2008 is anything to go by, I’m sure that Wheels 2009 will be a success. We will certainly be there.

The show was opened by England Rugby Star Simon Shaw who also took the opportunity to have a good look round and try out as many attractions as possible. a swing... 2008’s Arun Business Partnership Golf Day built on the success of 2007’s event and was even bigger and better than before!

hursday 11th September saw the second annual Arun Business Partnership Golf Day take place at Ham Manor Golf Club in aid of the Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. The event, organised by the Business Partnership team and CAM Ltd, welcomed 52 people from an array of local businesses who, in teams of four, pitted their golf wits against each

T

other in a friendly competition. Designed as an opportunity to bring like-minded players together, the Golf Day was an outstanding success. Not only did everyone have a fantastic time but the event also raised £860 for Chestnut Tree House from the kindness of the players buying raffle tickets, throwing money in the charity bucket if they missed a green and from the auction.

The prizes winners were as follows: Team Prize for 1st - H&B Sensors with Angmering Taxis coming in 2nd Par 3 Nearest the Pin - Was won by Paul Warriner Par 3 Hole in One Challenge Prizes - Thanks to Peter Cooper for putting up a Golf and Chandlers for putting up a BMW. Prizes for the hole in one - we had a couple of near misses but no one got it this year!

Prizes for the raffle were kindly donated by: Arun View Ian Hart Funeral Directors Rustington Golf Centre Avisford Park Hilton Biffa Hands on Holistics David Lloyd Centre It’s no wonder that over £800 was raised for Chestnut Tree House when you consider some of the great prizes that were on offer which included an England Rugby Shirt (courtesy of Eagle Oak) and a signed boxing glove of Henry Cooper’s (courtesy of Football Bananas).

We would also like to thank the sponsors for their support G. Allen, FA Holland, Rabbit, CS Concrete, Inspire Leisure, Adams Beeny and New Carlton Kennels.

Michael Pisko, from CAM who helped organise the event, said:

“It was a great day that for once was not spoiled by the weather. All the players seemed to enjoy themselves and the buffet put on afterwards was extremely well received. “Unfortunately, no one was lucky enough to hit a hole in one and win a car but the day was about raising money for such a good local cause as well as having a great time.” Mike went on to say thank you to all the local companies who sponsored holes on the day and to the Arun Business Partnership team for all its support. The venue and date for next year will be announced shortly. THE MAGAZINE 56

MEETINGS

hat would you think if you were invited to a typical business networking meeting, what do you imagine it would be like? A few businesses gathered together, apologies for absence, minutes of the last meeting, matters arising, long speeches and even longer presentations – I’ve been to them and I’m sure you have too and, of course, there is a place for such meetings. Now think about being invited to a quarterly meeting of the Arun Business Partnership. No minutes of the last meeting, no apologies for absence, no long presentations or speeches and lots more than just a few businesses gathered together. Our average attendance is around 60 and whilst lots of contacts are made and the early stages of some valuable contracts are evident we do like to have a bit of fun! The meetings are cabaret style – and that’s not just the seating! It’s your chance to get to know about other local businesses, what they can do and how you can work together. We do a bit of speed dating (or networking if you prefer!) and we are told it works! It must do, we know business people just don’t have the time to go to meetings that don’t provide them with anything and once they’ve been to one of the Arun Business Partnership meetings many seem to be hooked! As they say “the proof of the pudding... so why not get along to the next meeting and see for yourself.

Getting To Know You few words about our Getting To Know You Event ….. Hmm… pictures speak louder than words so have a look and see! But by way of background and explanation, we provide the venue and the tables, businesses book a space and bring along their various bits and pieces. This might simply be their brochures or business cards or examples of what they do. We’ve had everything from hotels to photographers, cake makers to photocopier suppliers and complementary therapies to security services. As with everything you get out what you put in so we tend to measure the success by the noise levels and we’ve declared them all successful! Oh and best of all – it’s FREE!

ue to the success of the Arun Business Partnership Golf Day Mike Pisko has been in search of where to take you all next, and we have been talking to all the local golf clubs to find the best venue. We hope to be featuring reviews on a range of clubs in the area on the website in the near future so keep your eyes peeled. Not only do we want to put on another good day but as Business and golf seem to go hand in hand these days, it may be a good opportunity for you and your clients to experience a relaxing day out. The first place we were invited to visit was Worthing Golf Club and this is what we found. Worthing has been established since 1905 and offers two great courses to choose from the Upper and Lower. We started with the upper and as its name suggests it leads up to one of the highest points of Worthing offering superb views of the Channel and the South Coast. The course is not the longest in the world and yes there are 5 par 3’s but it’s

a true challenge for whatever stage of golf you may have reached. The holes vary which makes a course enjoyable and one minute you are faced with a wide open fairway and the next its watch out for the trees or the out of bounds. As the saying goes its “drives for show and putts for dough” and a tip to you all is that when putting out if you aim towards the sea you may have more success. Worthing Lower is totally different and a lot harder but one of the best courses I have ever played and I have played some good ones. Starting off with what appears to be a fairly easy par 4 leads you in to a false sense of security. The holes are long and the greens!! Well lets put it this way I can not remember 4 putting on a par 3 and the ninth has now given me nightmares. Don’t let that put you off as each hole is completely different and if you have a high handicap you can score well.

As well as two courses the club house offers a wide range of food and drink, there is a well stocked pro shop and two driving ranges. The Club is also happy to host Societies and Corporate events and the venue is ideal for weddings and private functions. More details are available on the Club Website www.worthinggolf.co.uk or email the Club direct on enquiries@worthinggolf.com or telephone 01903 260801 A full review of all the holes is available on www.arunbusinesspartnership.co.uk

The Wetland Centre in Arundel is one of nine throughout the British Isles. Created in 1976, it had an award winning visitor centre designed by a, then young, local architect, Neil Holland, and has had roughly one and a half million visitors through its doors and around its lakes since then. Peter was born in London, the only child of Arctic explorer Robert Falcon Scott, who died when Peter was only 3 years old. He famously left instructions to his wife to “try and make the boy interested in natural

Inheriting his artistic talent from his sculptor mother, he had his first London exhibition of his paintings in 1933, but the Scott family was sufficiently well off for him to afford other relatively expensive recreations like wildfowling and many sports at which he excelled. In 1936 he represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland at sailing in the Olympic Games, winning a bronze medal. During the war he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for bravery in the Royal Navy and helped to design ‘shadow camouflage’, which disguised

Apart from his serious attitude to nature he did have a wonderful sense of humour, epitomised in his apparent earnest request for the Loch Ness monster to be recognised as an endangered species. Towards this end he gave Nessie the scientific name of Nessiteras rhombopteryx - in Ancient Greek it means “the wonder of Ness with the diamond shaped fin” he said. Until he became involved the International Whaling Commission was purely a body of whaling nations: a ‘butchers’ club’ as Sir Peter used to call it. He used his international respect and his skill as a lobbyist to help get sympathetic countries to join the Commission. By 1986 its membership voted to completely halt commercial whaling. A visit to the Antarctic in 1966 made him determined that it should remain a wilderness. The sheer majesty of the building and the serene surroundings make it the perfect place to go and re-collect your thoughts out of the way of life’s maelstrom. I’m always slightly nervous going back to a restaurant (although the previous review was written by a former colleague, I’ve eaten at the Bailiffscourt once before) as the initial experience doesn’t always repeat itself the second time around. Perhaps I’m cynical having been disappointed before, but I can’t help the ‘What if it’s not as good’ feeling… Of course, I shouldn’t have worried about this particular restaurant. As soon as I arrived, I was welcomed with the same

warmth by the Maitre d’ and left to examine the menu with a drink in the comfortable waiting area. It’s a good job that they don’t rush you as you make your choices from the sumptuous menu I was really unsure as to what to have. It’s a great position to be in – to be spoilt for choice… read more...

izza Express in Arundel is situated in a fabulous Grade II Listed building boasting one of the largest Alfresco dining areas in Arundel. My husband and I visited the restaurant early one Friday evening and were greeted by the very welcoming smile of the assistant manager, Georgia. We were seated immediately and introduced to our waiter for the evening, the lovely Manu. Although it was still early the restaurant was already oozing with atmosphere with several families and couples dining and the soft music just perfect in the background. The exposed beams and brickwork lent a certain charm to the intimate character of this cosy but family-friendly restaurant. Manu was certainly up to speed on his menu and was superb with his recommended choice of a chilled glass of Merlot Rose and Chianti Classico Riserva, both of which complemented our Olives Marinate intro and our choice of starters. I had the Brushetta con Funghi – mushrooms baked with cream, béchamel sauce, red onions, parsley and a dash of balsamic vinegar, which was divine, while my husband, Stuart, polished off the Mozzarella & Tomato Salad with fresh Basil leaves, pesto and extra virgin olive oil. I was hard pressed to choose my main course with the vast selection of pizzas along with the added temptation of pasta and salad dishes also available.

McGuigan Classic Chardonnay 2007 Tesco £5.99 Fresh melon and tropical fruit flavours with a hint of vanilla spice. Crisp, fresh and lightly oaked, this is the 'new wave' of Australian Chardonnay.

My World Famous Sticky Toffee Pudding with Salted Toffee Sauce and Cornish Clotted Cream. Say no more! This is the ultimate pudding. The salted toffee sauce is unusual but amazing! The salt brings out the natural taste of caramel and makes the sauce into something very special but it’s there as a catalyst - you cannot taste the salt at all! The Cornish clotted cream is something close to my heart, as I am from Cornwall and actually when I was training as a chef I used to live next to the creamery where it was made!

I

have to confess, when I was asked to test-drive the new Ford Fiesta, I was particularly interested as my sister has just bought one, and has been raving about it pretty much ever since. I admit I was a little sceptical, being a die-hard VW fan, I doubted I could be converted. How wrong I was! The Fiesta has always been popular – just try to count the sheer number on the roads next time you’re out and about. Whether you remember the cool people in your street having one the first time around, bought one for your kids as a starter car or happen to be into the customising scene, the Fiesta is all things to all people. From the minute I set eyes on the car, it was one pleasant surprise after another. The new Fiesta looks amazing – a really modern, sleek shape, impressive alloys, and a great range of colours. The latest redesign has really freshened up the car’s appeal and brought back the appeal of the original model all those years ago… Once inside the car, I was struck by the curved lines of the interior – it reminded me of a “capsule” – I felt very comfortably enclosed. The dash area not

only looks up-to-the-minute but also has been really well thought out to be highly functional and easy to use. It might sound like a simple point, but a badly designed cabin environment really hampers your ability to use and enjoy the car out on the road. Thankfully, the Fiesta was pretty much perfect! The seat adjustment and steering column adjustment had plenty of scope for all sizes – particularly important to me with my long legs! As soon as I’d settled myself into my comfortable driving position, the car fitted me perfectly. Visibility is great – the rear window can be seen in full through the rear-view mirror, and the electric wing mirrors make it easy to see what’s going on around you. As expected, this car is very nippy around town, and blissfully easy to park! What did impress me was how powerful it was when increasing speed on the motorway. I took it up to 70mph very quickly and easily, with smooth transition through he gears. I gave it a hard test around roundabouts and it clung to the road very well; it’s a tough little nut! This is especially impressive since the model I took out was the 1.25i – not an

engine size that you’d traditionally associate with lashings of power – but it’s obvious that the Ford techies have extracted every single usable piece of horsepower from the engine. With half a tank of petrol (I really noticed the difference in performance from my usual diesel engine), I was pleased to see the indicator gauge showing over 100 miles available. Economical - very important at the moment! What’s more, the plucky little Fiesta comes in with a low CO2 banding as well, so your planetary impact is pretty small. Another fantastic feature is the MP3 socket – how lovely to be able to plug in my IPOD and listen to my own music choices blasting out from the impressive sound system. The final test for me – very important – boot space. Wow, it’s like the Tardis! It’s honestly really surprising just how deep that boot is, a definite plus for anyone using a stroller or who just likes to shop! I thoroughly enjoyed my day in the Fiesta, so much so that I think I’ll be joining my sister for my next car – I loved it! Car supplied by: Cuff Miller Littlehampton

COSTS ROAD SAFETY

costs...

could you commit homicide at work?

lmost 30% of all collisions on Sussex roads which leave participants either dead or seriously injured involve business drivers. Are you doing enough to protect your workforce, and your company, on the roads? Whether your employees are driving their own supermini or the firm’s delivery vehicle, popping between meetings or making long haul deliveries, statistically almost 30% of them could be killed or left seriously injured. And you, as a company owner, could be held liable for a manslaughter prosecution, especially if you are unaware of the laws regarding driving at work, don’t have regularly reviewed driver policies or know who is responsible for implementing these procedures. This has all come from the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007, which came into force in April 2008. Under the Act, companies or organisations can be convicted in the event of one of their employees being killed or seriously injured while driving for work, if it’s found that there have been gross failures in the way that activities have been managed to reduce that risk. Although the Health and Safety Executive’s guidance is principally aimed at companies with five or more employees, the level of risk doesn’t diminish for smaller firms and may even increase for single operator companies whose owners have to do everything themselves and therefore may be more tired or distracted behind the wheel.

A

THE MAGAZINE 70

In the event of death or serious injury, courts will look at a company’s management systems and practices - this means that company cultures will come under scrutiny. Your company might have the very best policy possible, but if the culture is to ignore its implementation, then the Act steps in and enables a more effective means for prosecuting the worst corporate failures to manage health and safety properly – and of course protect employees as they go about their business. In essence, this means that if you, as an employer, can’t prove that you have not only an effective policy but also an effective implementation system, you could be liable to prosecution for manslaughter and a resulting prison sentence. Aside from the legal ramifications, there is the sheer human and financial cost of death and injury on the roads. Average repair bills can cost anywhere between £750 and £4,500 per claim and, in the present financial climate, few companies can afford this type of bill. Furthermore, accidents and injuries have a massive affect on staff morale and can damage the company’s reputation, plus have knock-on affects to the other areas of the business. Can you really afford to have: • A vehicle off the road whilst awaiting repair or replacement? • A member of staff away on sick leave? • An increase in welfare support for the affected member of staff, next of kin and the workforce?

• Police or HSE investigators going through your company policies and practices with a fine toothcomb? Legal costs? All the indirect costs - such as supervisors time, fleet managers time, overtime payments to cover the staff shortfall, employee replacement, administrative costs, failure to meet customer expectations and demand and finally the loss of business? It isn’t all doom and gloom however. The Sussex Safer Roads Partnership is running the COSTS – Company Operator Safer Transport Scheme – project to give you the tools you need to reduce the road risk faced by your employees. Through the partnership’s website – www.sussexsaferroads .gov.uk/COSTS - you can gain a better understanding of the risks and legal requirements that you face as a company owner, and what steps you can take to reduce those risks. The website offers you a range of links which should help to answer any outstanding questions raised by this article. If, however, you have a specific query or want something tailored to your particular business, please feel free to get in touch with the COSTS team by email costs@sussexsaferroads.gov.uk – and they can direct you to an expert or business champion who will be able to assist you further.
