FREE PLAN Chiefly drawing inspiration from Le Corbusier’s Petite Maison and Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House, I created a layered experience within my Free Plan design. There are layers of walls dividing more private and more public spaces: a property wall, exterior walls, and interior “core” walls. I also designed layers of verticality through a raised threshold, a house built on a raised platform, differing heights of interior and exterior walls, and a property wall of varied height responding to site conditions. These layers emphasize the relationships between service space, served space, and exterior space in my design.

RAUM PLAN To design my own Raum Plan house, I looked to Adolf Loos’ Tzara House, other residential houses by Loos, and the NA House by Sou Fujimoto. From there, I designed a house that struck a balance between functionality and the significant characteristics of Raum Plan. My design includes many small level changes between volumes, resulting in a more complex spatial experience than traditional residences with strictly defined levels. The volumes, each one a room with a particular function, are nestled together and tucked into a sloped site. They are connected through a clear circulation path indicated by small sets of stairs and a main staircase.

THICK-THIN To address the tactic of thick-thin, the Poli and Wolf Houses by Pezo von Ellrichshausen informed my design. I pushed servant spaces and circulation outward to create a thickend wall condition, keeping larger, "thinner" living spaces centralized. Openings on the exterior walls hint at the program within. Spaces are defined through both actual and implied boundaries, as well as small level changes as seen in Raum Plan. The main living space volumetrically connects the lower level to the upper level. Spaces are also connected through the alignment of wall openings and two main staircases on opposite sides of the house.
