A Design Exploration by Rachel Berman and Danielle Reid The various notable qualities that existed on site one—direct access to the adjacent river, a multitude of high rising trees and a substantial topographical shift—provided unique opportunities that mandated exploration. The drivers for the design became creating a building that would allow for flexibility in regard to its impact on the site and additionally allow for flexibility within its own interior organization. To push this notion of objectivity, the building necessitated a transparent façade that would allow its surroundings to become a means of camouflage while at the same time allowing the building to maintain a substantial physical presence. This transparency was mediated by its proximity to trees providing necessary shading during warmer months. A separation of the building from its adjacent party wall allowed for a unique opportunity to activate that space as an aperture to the water, emphasizing the contrasting notions of assimilation and separation. In hopes of appealing to the ‘Millennial Professional’, it became apparent that the interior logic of the building needed to additionally remain flexible as means to properly evolve with this new technologically savvy demographic. In a divergence from the standard notion of ‘served versus service’ space, the ‘service’ spaces were designed to extend beyond their physiological limits through the use of panels and the integration of excess of light and an extremely free facade within each apartment. In addition to the integration of a shared workspace, the building maintains its stance as a building dedicated to the growth and professional success of its users.
