Dead Matter

DEAD MATTER What are these places where we store our data? They are places of machines: computer chips, processors, hard disks, cables. But these things are not in themselves what we value. They are a necessary system that is established to preserve and protect something that has become essential to many people, connected by the internet. But these physical objects and systems are not in and of themselves important: they are an infrastructure for memory and thought. Parts will be replaced as our technological capabilities progress, they will grow faster and more efficient, but what the memories they contain will be seamlessly moved. Our immaterial memories have been given a material home that is out of sight. We entrust the safekeeping of our memories and the maitenence of its infrastructure to corporations, but we never see the physical structures that house them. Religious structures are a place to speak to god, whom we entrust with carrying out our devine wishes and spiritual safekeeping. The place of worship becomes our symbol of this relationship. It is personal, but also representative of our collective humanity facing something larger. What potential exists in a space that contains all of the thoughts and memories that we have externalized as data? If I write down my dreams each morning on my iPhone, they pass through a new emotional and psychological infrastructure, the heart of which is the data center. If these places become visible and accessible, we develop a new understanding of where we have placed a part of ourselves. And the physical location of that becomes a place of contemplation and reunification.
