Project 2: CARPENTER CENTER
The Carpenter Center is the one and only building in North America designed by the esteemed and influential Swiss architect Le Corbusier. Built in 1963, the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Harvard University’s campus. Due to the nature of the building’s purpose, Le Corbusier wanted to reflect “an experience of freedom and unbound creativity.”1 He believed that “a traditional building for the visual arts would have been a contradiction.”2 In 1965, Le Corbusier passed away and was never able to see the completed building. However, his legacy still lives on. The Carpenter Center incorporates Le Corbusier’s understanding of the relationship between the major forms. In the heart of the building is a square segment with two volumes to either side. There are also columns situated throughout, placed strategically in grids. Another feature is the ramp which connects the interior to the exterior and runs through the building. The ramp begins on the ground level and runs up to the second floor of the building then back down to ground level. Designed with functionality and purpose, the Carpenter Center did not conform to its surroundings and would influence modern architectural style.
