Hybrid High Rise

A HYBRID MODULAR SYSTEM FOR HIGH RISE CONSTRUCTION Considering the fact that all modular buildings are a hybrid of modular and conventional construction, this project investigates a system for high-rise construction which takes advantage of the economy afforded by the repetitive aspect of modular construction while avoiding the typical massing of stacked modules.

The transition from manufactured homes, to single unit modular, to multi-unit modular requires a re-definition of the modular chassis.

Structural redundancy of the modules creates opportunities for interesting spatial relationships. In combination with a circulation armature, a modular building system can be conceived to maximize design opportunities such as views and private outdoor spaces.

A concrete core with double helix stairs provides the armature for the modules. It replaces the typical double-loaded corridor with entry alcoves at the corners of each floor.
