Dear Camden Catholic Community,
As I reflect upon my first year as President of Camden Catholic High School my heart is full of gratitude for the devotion of our students, parents, faculty, staff, friends, and alumni to the mission of our school Your gifts of time, talent, treasure and prayer made the 2023-2024 academic year a great success as together we empowered the next generation of innovative leaders steeped in the Catholic tradition of Mercy It is a great blessing to lead a school community that is uniquely committed to heeding Christ’s call to love one another.
Camden Catholic’s commitment to offering first-rate opportunities for students to grow in mind, body, and spirit bore great fruit in 2023-2024 Spiritually, the faculty, staff, and students of Camden Catholic engaged in worship and the sacramental life of the Church through frequent opportunities to engage in the holy sacrifice of the Mass, Communion, Reconciliation, and Adoration Our students continued to provide spiritual and corporal works of mercy through participation in our highly regarded Christian Service program and reflected upon the connection between service, faith, charity, and justice through expanded retreat opportunities.
Academically, our students' succeeded in academic competitions/programs hosted by partners that include Villanova and Georgetown Universities, earned college credits by excelling in rigorous Advanced Placement courses, and outpaced national and local trends in academic growth as measured by the STAR Assessment The quality and value of a Camden Catholic education is evidenced by the remarkable $35,049,896.00 in college/university scholarships collectively earned by the class of 2024
Athletically, Camden Catholic Field Hockey repeated as state champions, the talented young women of the Irish Swim Team won the Caribbean Division of the South Jersey Swim League, Irish Boys Bowling won the Olympic Conference National Division Title, and Irish Baseball returned to the Diamond Classic. Furthermore, there are 24 student-athletes from the CCHS class of 2024 who will be competing in their sport at the college level!
In 2023-2024 we also announced guaranteed admissions and scholarship agreements with the University of Scranton, Mount St. Mary’s University, Holy Family University, Manhattan College, Rowan College of South Jersey, and Saint Francis University There is a body of research that shows early exposure to college level coursework and methods of instruction dramatically improves educational, career, and life outcomes for students We look forward to growing our existing college partnerships and building additional relationships in future years which will include new opportunities for students to earn college credits while in high school.
Thank you for your dedication to our school and students I hope to see you soon! Go Irish!

A Letter from the Board Chair Jack Wixted ’72
Dear Camden Catholic Community,
Throughout the 2023-2024 school year, Camden Catholic continued to thrive under the new leadership of our President, Rory Sweeney The Board of Trustees are grateful for his leadership and the unwavering stewardship of Principal Heather Crisci, along with the diligent efforts of our administration and the teaching excellence of our faculty
As always, Camden Catholic continuously benefits from the guidance of the Diocese of Camden and appreciates the support of Superintendent, Dr Bill Watson, and His Excellency Bishop Dennis J Sullivan We would like to especially thank Bishop Sullivan for his spiritual guidance and support of Catholic education, particularly his enthusiastic support of Camden Catholic as he transitions from his role as Bishop through March 17, 2025
On the academic front, our senior class earned $35 million (over $200,000 per graduate) in college scholarsh while 80% were accepted to their first-choice college Three of our seniors will matriculate to Historically Black Colleges and Universities and two will enter military service Furthering our academic excellence, we established partnerships with highly respected colleges and universities offering guaranteed admission and scholarship opportunities Beginning with the class of 2025, Camden Catholic students will be guaranteed admission to several Catholic higher educational institutions. In addition to guaranteed admission, students who meet specified criteria at each college or university will be offered merit and additional financial scholarship awards This partnership will provide an attractive pathway to college for our students It is fitting that we posthumously honored a beloved teacher and guidance counselor, Jack Phipps, by naming th guidance office in Jack's honor We also received generous contributions in Jack’s name to assist with menta health services and the renovation of the guidance offices
In athletics, the Irish continue their dominance in Field Hockey with a State Championship for the second consecutive year while the Bowling and Girls Swim teams were division champions Irish pride is abundant as we congratulate Kevin McDonnell '08 for winning annual Broad Street Run in Philadelphia, the first American to win this prestigious race in 30 years! We also welcomed our new Athletic Director, Jim McHugh, who hit the ground running in guiding our athletic programs Finally, we instituted the inaugural Greenies Athletic Awards to recognize the achievements of our athletes across all our teams
The Camden Catholic Board of Trustees is comprised of talented, generous, and committed members of the CCHS community I would like to especially recognize and thank Joseph Kenney ’76 and Jay O’Donnell ‘76 who will step down from the Board Joe Kenney previously served as a member of the Board of Trustees of CCHS for many years and more recently returned to become the chairperson of the Finance Committee where he helped guide the school through the pandemic challenges and served a critical role in stabilizing the school’s financial affairs post-pandemic. Jay O’Donnell also previously served as a member of the Board and more recently returned to chair the Nominating Committee. Jay enhanced our board governance and was instrumental in establishing a group of non-board committee members who contribute their talent to the standing committees of the board. Jay also introduced an efficient technology platform for our board meetings and related documents Both Joe and Jay will be sorely missed, and the board expresses its gratitude and sincere appreciation for all the time, effort, and insight which they have provided to Camden Catholic High School in their positions as Trustees I also extend a hearty welcome to our newly appointed trustee, Tim Higgins, ’07 who will contribute his significant academic experience as Associate Director for Undergraduate Advising Support at St Joseph’s University to Camden Catholic.
The Board of Trustees is very grateful for the generous support of the Camden Catholic community of alumni and friends Your contributions to our Irish Giving Day event, the major fundraising initiative of the year, raised over $322,000 We also celebrated our Hall of Fame inductees in November and will move this important alumni event to every other year which will allow for a better opportunity to receive your nominations of a classmate.

Congratulations on Retirement
Thank you, Mrs. LaRosa!
Antonella Bouchard ‘80 has enjoyed a 30+ year career in education After spending more than two decades at another high school, she returned home to CCHS a few years ago and was a joyful addition to our religion department Beyond her classroom lessons, Mrs Bouchard moderated a number of student activities and clubs, led retreats, provided tutoring and mentorship, and was a kind, generous and humble colleague We wish Antonella all of the very best as she enjoys retirement
Leigh Ann Larkin, science faculty, has announced her retirement in order to invest her days in the joys of grandparenting! CCHS congratulates Leigh Ann and her family and wishes her all of the best in this new chapter of her life
Welcome to the Family
In 2019, Jennifer LaRosa, a 1988 graduate, returned home to Camden Catholic to revamp and lead Camden Catholic’s Christian Ministry program, newly dubbed “Irish Ministry ” Based on her successes as a teacher and campus ministry leader at other schools, Mrs LaRosa was ready to make an impact immediately at her Alma Mater The difference was felt immediately as she mobilized groups of students during the summer, undertaking Operation Backpack, Cathedral Kitchen and the SSJ Neighborhood Center projects, even before the first official day of school
From that time, her community connections and her impact only grew
“
I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the water to create many ripples.
- Mother Teresa
From her mobile “Irish Express” food, diaper and water collections during Covid, to her seemingly unparalleled energy and organization skills, to her ability to get students involved in helping others as they follow Jesus’ example, Mrs. LaRosa is the consummate servant-leader.
Thank you, Mrs LaRosa, for casting the stone of servant leadership at Camden Catholic. The ripples now continue through thousands of students for whom you have provided the example of prayer, reflection and service in Camden Catholic’s mission of mercy
Jim McHugh was named Camden Catholic’s Director of Athletics in February, when he joined the CCHS family from Rancocas Valley High School “I’m honored and humbled for the opportunity to join such a heralded and historic institution The name ‘Camden Catholic’ has had significance in the South Jersey area and beyond for the last century, and the chance to lead an already thriving athletic department is truly a privilege,” says Jim “I look forward to contributing my passion for sports and fostering a culture of excellence, teamwork, and sportsmanship. I’m excited to build upon the rich legacy of Camden Catholic, creating a positive and fulfilling experience for our student-athletes and school community ”
Thank you to these incredible faculty members for their service to the Camden Catholic community. We wish you many blessings!
Despite, or perhaps because of, beginning high school during a worldwide pandemic, the class of 2024 has risen to new heights in many unique ways, just as Beatrice Daverso ‘24 did literally as the very first female CCHS pole vaulter. Their imaginative, innovative and creative contributions have enriched both Camden Catholic and our wider community. Here we highlight just a few members of the graduating class, as exemplary members of the CCHS family who are certain to continue to do amazing things, academically, spiritually, creatively and athletically.

Jack Tartamosa (Loyola University) had a plan as a young man of eight at Resurrection Catholic School, to collect coats to donate to neighbors in need
Ten years later, Jack graduates from CCHS having led the collection and donation of thousands of coats over the years
Beatrice
Daverso (Kean University) set the mark high for future track athletes as she became the first Camden Catholic woman to pole vault for the Irish
Christian
Sawn (The Catholic University of America) provided a beautiful example of Honor, Faith and Loyalty for his classmates as he led the class as
President, became a Eucharistic Minister, and worked to be a friend to all students, faculty and staff
Morgan Haas (College of Charleston) will bring her CCHS Vice President experience down South as a member of the ARCH Scholars Program at the College of Charleston (ARCH stands for Achievement Realized through Community in Honors).
At CCHS Morgan was both an accomplished scholar, and a living example of the CCHS motto: Honor, Faith and Loyalty She was a two-sport athlete, an Honor Society student, a member of Christian Ministry and was named Homecoming Queen and a Camden County Best of the Class “Leadership Award” honoree As an ARCH scholar, she will be part of a special cohort within the College of Charleston Honors College made up of highly capable incoming students.
Reagan Stauts
(Temple University) harnessed her field hockey talent to bring “Morgans Message” to Camden Catholic Morgan’s Message strives to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health within the student-athlete community and equalize the treatment of physical and mental health in athletics As a Morgan’s Message ambassador, Reagan recognized the high-pressure environment around competitive athletics that can often lead to mental health issues Along with her Irish field hockey teammates, Reagan hosted our first Morgan’s Message game which was covered by local media, and helped to expand the dialogue on mental health by normalizing conversations, empowering those who suffer in silence, and supporting those who feel alone
New Alumni & Students Team Up to Compete as CCHS Women in STEM
By An Nguyen, PhD, CCHS Faculty
This summer, six Camden Catholic students competed in the first competition of its kind: a high school design competition at NextFab, a professional makerspace, where they were given a design challenge, worked with consultants and engineers to plan their projects, and prototyped unique designs using newly acquired skills in woodworking and electronics The three teams of two presented to a panel of judges with backgrounds in business, marketing, industrial design, and engineering after only 10 hrs to complete the entire design process.
Caroline Gardner '24 and Kaelynn Jackson '25 created a dive buoy that utilized colored lights to notify scuba divers and boaters how much time is remaining for a dive Their design integrated many prototyping
technologies and resources and boasted a hydroelectric turbine to power the device
Francine Fernandes '24 and Dani Brown '25 designed Stack-a-Light, a building toy with square tiles that magnetically attach with one another to light up. They leveraged their understanding of parallel circuits and carefully analyzed how the product could aid development in children of different age groups
Trish Escarrilla '24 and Allie Hwang '26 fabricated Glam To Go, a container to store makeup products with a mirror with color-changing backlight for on-the-go makeup application. They cleverly designed the container compartments to fit the oddest shapes (like eyelash curlers) and made the mirror and light removable for use with a phone Using a CNC, they were able to create two products within the time limit
The judges had a tough time selecting one winner, since each project had distinct strengths After much deliberation, the judges decided that Stack-a-Light best met the criteria of the challenge, especially because of how every aspect of the design was constructed with the intended users in mind. Congrats to Francine & Dani!
Congratulations to the class of 2024 legacy graduates who have proud alumni family members going back five generations! May the Camden Catholic ideals of Honor, Faith and Loyalty continue to shine brightly among these family members.

“Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing,” said the illustrious writer and doer, Ben Franklin.
A more fitting statement could not be found for the alumni featured here In the fields of science, philosophy, theology, and the humanities, their writing and doing have been phenomenally worthwhile. These former Camden Catholic students, whose graduations span the years 1972 to 2023, are enriching society and making their alma mater proud.
Though for most of them, their work moves back and forth between the sciences and the humanities, we are showcasing them here in two sections: STEM Courses are Stepping Stones for High Achievers and Writing Their Way Around the World.
By Donna Maccherone, CCHS Faculty, retired and Co-Founder, Zen Wise Writers zenwisewriters.com
STEM Courses are Stepping Stones for High Achievers
Even before An Nguyen, PhD, director of both the robotics program and the STEM initiative at Camden Catholic, took on her first STEM Research mentee in 2020, CCHS was turning out scientists, mathematicians, researchers, engineers and doctors With Dr Nguyen’s innovative teaching methods and dedication to mentoring students, the STEM program would allow the science and math departments to flourish exponentially
Before she began teaching at Camden Catholic in 2018, An Nguyen had mentored senior research projects at Drexel University and The College of New Jersey She describes mentoring a research project as “different from mentoring students in a class, perhaps because they were more invested in the year-long project or perhaps the topic seemed more relevant to themselves or the world ”
Wanting to start a STEM mentoring program at Camden Catholic, Dr Nguyen found CCHS’s long-standing senior research project to be a good link to establishing a new program
As the blurb on the website stem@cchs says, her aim is “ to develop thinkers and tinkerers, problem solvers, and makers Students won't just learn about the engineering process or about research they will conduct literature surveys, practice laboratory techniques, analyze and evaluate data,
“My dream for the program is for students of different intended majors to work together to create a solution for a real-world problem...”
- Dr. An Nguyen, PhD
brainstorm solutions, and build prototypes Each project will have its own focus Some may involve diving into some mechanical or electrical
engineering Others will involve computer science, filmography, or environmental studies The sky's the limit!”
Her dream for the program, she says, “is for students of different intended majors to work together to create a solution for a real-world problem, much like in the senior design projects I mentored at the college level ” Dr Nguyen credits not only the students who work collaboratively but also the “robust alumni network and many community partners ” for their role in a learning process that encourages students to take on “problems we face in the 21st century [that] are too big for any one discipline to tackle alone ” She strives to help students develop “valuable collaborative and design skills that will set them apart in college and in their careers ”
The following profiles of Camden Catholic alumni who work in or are working toward STEM careers is a testament to math, science, and technology education at CCHS going back decades and continuing into the future > > > >
What Dr Nguyen’s first STEM mentee, TAYLOR GARDNER, CCHS class of 2021, finds most exciting about her studies at the University of North Carolina, Asheville, where her research has spanned multiple disciplines, including molecular microbiology, psychology, and neuroscience, is “the opportunity to uncover new knowledge and solve complex problems.”
Taylor explains that significant component of her work by referencing a statement of one of her professors, who told Taylor, “ our job is like one giant puzzle and a doctor of science is really a
research work on neuronal and non neuronal cells that play a significant role in stroke pathobiology She aided in a preclinical study whose results “lay the foundation for the development of therapeutic targets to aid in functional brain recovery following ischemic stroke ” Taylor sums up her love of this kind of important work saying, “The beauty and challenge of scientific research is that no one has done it before Everything you are doing is novel, which leads you to pave the way for new breakthroughs ”
Taylor’s other passion is soccer She is an NCAA
doctor of problem solving.” Taylor says, “To be a scientist is to be a problem solver ” A salient example is found in the months she spent recently on a project at Drexel University, where she is an undergraduate research fellow in Drexel’s School of Medicine. The time she spent troubleshooting and then refining a protocol for an experiment just to get the experiment to run smoothly was an exercise in patience as well as critical thinking
As she looks towards pursuing a PhD, with a particular interest in neuropharmacology, Taylor embraces the challenges and hard work required in such an intense field of study. She is currently a biology major with double minors in neuroscience and psychology So far she is most proud of her
Division I women ’ s soccer player and an honors student She makes a connection between her academic and athletic pursuits: “Being an athlete at the highest level has taught me how to fail, how to overcome, and how to adapt I have recognized the parallels between missing many goals before scoring one in soccer and recalibrating and repeating experiments to derive significant data in my research ” After detailing additional corollaries, Tayor concludes, saying, “Similarly, the resilience I employ as a student-athlete offers a stealthy backup when facing experimental diversity ”
Taylor took AP Bio as a junior and AP Chem as a senior The 3D printer project was her senior
research project Taylor credits academics at Camden Catholic, especially her AP bio and AP chemistry courses with Dr. Nguyen, as “the cornerstone of [her] motivation to pursue pharmacological research ” Taylor recalls that as the world shut down due to Covid19, she “embarked on her senior research project, which became a journey into research and pursuing [her] hypothesis that a 3D bio printer capable of extruding hydrogel could serve as a non-toxic supplement to plastic ” Pretty impressive for a high school student!
Though Taylor’s research interests have evolved, she says, “I will never forget the experience made possible by the community at CCHS, who came together to support this project through fundraisers and other support ”
As exciting as laboratory research is, Taylor asserts that there is another component of great importance to STEM education: SciComm, or science communication SciComm is “ very, very important because a scientist has no purpose if he or she cannot communicate [the research being done] to the general population ” Making good on her words about conveying information, Taylor’s research in molecular microbiology was recently published in mBio, the scientific journal from the American Society for Microbiology
Taylor Gardner is already no small influence in her chosen fields, and she strives to share her findings and insights with others As she says, “It is critical that we develop ways to communicate vital information from research studies in a way that people of all age groups will be able to understand We want people to care about the work [scientists] are doing, and this starts with correct communication of this information to the younger generation ”
ROCCO GIEGERICH was drawn to medicine from an early age. His enjoyment of and success in science classes were one influence, but there is another distinctive dimension for this 2022 CCHS grad Rocco says his interest in medicine is also a result of his Catholic faith. He explains: “I have always desired to dedicate my life to a profession where I can live as Christ lived throughout his ministry He healed others, he walked with others through difficult moments, and he provided care in times of uncertainty or darkness. I believe medicine is unique in that it intersects these attributes of Christ’s mission with modernity’s science and technology ”
Now as a biomedical sciences major with one
minor in Spanish and another in Health, Ethics, and Spirituality, Rocco is completely immersed in work toward his goal of becoming a physician who is bilingual, as he says, “there is a need for Spanishspeaking patient care providers in our nation ”
When not in the classroom at Xavier University, Rocco works as an EMT for the Lumberton Emergency Squad and occasionally volunteers for the Tabernacle Rescue Squad He has also conducted research for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital through their Disorders of the Gut-Brain Interaction Program at the Neurogastroenterology and Motility Center. He finds ensuring quality control in compiling data challenging, as it involves “analyzing patient outcomes involving more than 60,000 elements of data ” He approaches it with meticulous care and attention, understanding the seriousness of the task.
As he continues with various ways to get experience in his field, Rocco finds “the thrill of work in emergency medicine the most exciting
part. ” He never dreads a shift, he says, because “each day is a little different than the next, with new patients and new challenges ” EMT work also presents challenges and it is work Rocco is most proud of He says he is “privileged to meet people in some of their most difficult moments and walk them through that ” It is a job that requires “ not only STEM-based skills but equally as much care and compassionate love for your neighbor ”
These myriad jobs that go beyond pre-med university studies are, he says, stepping stones in “developing patient care skills, critical and analytical thinking, and a caring bedside manner. ” Some of that critical thinking and skill-building began with science and math instruction at Camden Catholic, which was “invaluable because it provided [him] a strong foundation to explore interests in the medical field.” Rocco asserts that after high school he has taken classes and attended seminars that he “otherwise would not have been able to take if [he] didn’t have the foundational knowledge from high school.”
Rocco Giegerich, on a path to admirable work in the field of medicine, believes that STEM education “provides students with a taste of various fields that are essential components in society ” He concludes, “It can possibly start a lifelong interest and career choice like it did for me ”
ANTHONY NGUYEN, class of 2018, is currently pursuing a PhD in Mathematics at the University of Minnesota, working in the field of differential geometry and mathematical physics, in which he studies geometrical shapes that are, he says, “good models for describing the space time we live in.” The objects, called manifolds, have many applications, he explains, including describing gravity via Einstein’s theory of general relativity, artificial intelligence, statistical inference, and computer graphics and animation Think Disney for that last one. What Anthony finds most interesting about this wide array of utilization of manifolds is that “they are the setting on which much of classical and quantum physics happens ” What he enjoys most about this part of his work is the collaboration he does with mathematicians all over the world
His senior thesis at Cornell, where he earned a BA in Mathematics and Physics, was on “ a small problem in a subject of mathematical physics called holography, which states that quantum gravity manifests as a projection of a certain quantum field theory on the infinite boundary of the universe onto the interior space ” Wow It may
be “ a small problem” but it certainly seems to have enormous implications
The work requires patience and creativity, Anthony says, and “it’s not always clear you ’ re making progress. One must be comfortable feeling ‘stuck’ on a problem for days, weeks, or months at a time ” The mathematician must “keep attacking the problem with new ideas and even luck for the right idea to come ” In addition to those attributes, determination and diligence are what this mathematician continues to bring to the task, and he teaches others to do the same
Anthony passes on those requisites of creativity and patience in mentoring other students, which he’s been doing since he was an undergrad It’s work he finds very rewarding, noting that some students he tutored have gone on to pursue PhDs in Physics And his own mentors in both high school and college are who inspired him to pursue work in a STEM field For Camden Catholic’s impact, Anthony recalls enjoying and learning a lot in Ms. Sabato’s math classes and being influenced by Mrs Firemen’s honors physics class to pursue his undergrad major in physics He’s a supporter of STEM courses and extracurriculars in “all grade levels,” offering that “it’s good to be exposed to engineering, computer science, etc. earlier rather than just the traditional math and science ”
Anthony Nguyen finds doing academic research enjoyable because, he says, “I get to ask and investigate interesting questions about the physical and mathematical universe ” His obvious intelligence is manifested in the work he does, that much is clear But his use of the words “enjoy” and “enjoyable” in many of his responses, connecting mathematics and joy, reveals the depth and humanity of this mathematician
has been doing under research director Dr. Kelly Lambert The outcome of the research, he says, “is possibly translational for humans with depression, anxiety, and other psychiatric disorders ”
When asked about his research work in the field of behavioral psychology and neurobiology at the Behavioral Neuroscience lab at the University of Richmond, BRADEN WIXTED, CCHS class of 2022, says, “I could talk about this all day I get to hang out with rats, who are pretty relaxed and kind of cute. ” More seriously and with genuine enthusiasm, Braden, who is an undergrad at UR, double majoring in Psychology and Health Studies, explains that “ rats are more emotionally flexible and perform better in cognitive and behavioral tasks” after having been exposed to enriched environments under the UPER (unpredictable positive experience responses) project What Braden is most excited about are the potential human benefits of the research that he
Other outcomes of the UPER project indicate that “humans who perform cognitively rewarding activities like writing, knitting, gardening, or coloring [might be] better able to stave off dementia, Alzheimer’s, and other forms of neurodegenerative decay than others ” Braden describes his lab as one that “focuses on enriching, positive environments and their influence on behavior and brain biology.”
In addition to this work, Braden analyzes ultrasonic vocalizations recorded during UPER behavioral tasks “Both of these projects give us more insight into positive and negative affective states and social processes, which we could use in preclinical models for psychiatric disorders,” he says. He is especially proud that his first major conference poster was presented at the Society for
Neuroscience annual meeting in Washington, D C in November 2023
Having only just finished his second year at the University of Richmond, Braden is already considering long-term goals for himself and the kind of research he has been involved in He is especially interested in finding “therapies, behavioral strategies, or cognitive methods, like the UPER training with effort-based rewards and enriched environments that help those afflicted with psychiatric disorders ” He is particularly inspired to work in the field of neuroscience, he says, because “ … if our work can make the lives of others easier or more fulfilling, then I will be pursuing whatever field allows me to do so ”
Braden says he came to the University of Richmond “ not entirely sure of where [he] would end up ” Remembering his science and math teachers at CCHS and, he says, “their passion for their subjects,” which he also saw in his professors and other students, broadened his interests,
leading him to the STEM field he now pursues Braden has strong feelings about STEM education in grammar schools and high schools He feels it should be mandatory, and says, “STEM education [can] open up interests for children who might not otherwise know they exist Who knows, the next top engineer, mathematician, or physician who can revolutionize the field may exist in someone discovering STEM for the first time Give everyone ample opportunities to develop their interests and see where it takes them ”
After earning a BS in Exercise Science from the University of Scranton, in which the pre-physical therapy track included a full roster of heavy science and math courses, Rich went on to a doctorate as well as advanced certifications and licenses
RICH CROWELL, Doctor of Physical Therapy, licensed physical therapist, orthopedic clinical specialist, and owner of the PT practice Romash and Crowell in Haddonfield, remembers first thinking about career options with his CCHS guidance counselor Father William Hart Rich, who graduated from Camden Catholic in 2004, did not know then he would end up in the rewarding field he is now in, but it started with those conversations with Fr. Hart about what
What he finds most challenging in his work now is also what he finds most rewarding, which is “matching the art and science of physical therapy for each patient ” He explains that “the science is… the background knowledge of anatomy and physiology needed to understand the pathology [as well as] the problem-solving to prove or disprove a diagnosis and then come up with an appropriate treatment plan The art piece is taking the theoretical treatment plan and making adjustments based on multiple factors, including the patient’s progress and personality, environmental and behavioral factors ”
The uniqueness of the individual is an important factor in the treatment of each patient for Rich “Every patient who walks into my office,” he affirms, “does not necessarily follow the classic textbook patterns and prognosis each is an individual person who needs to be treated uniquely ” This mindset informs his work in
interested the young student “I remember discussing my interest in sports and athletics But I was also interested in helping people ” After those initial discussions, Rich researched physical therapy and volunteered in a physical therapy clinic “The more I learned about health and exercise,” he says, “I realized I loved the health and wellness aspect of physical therapy ”
helping patients meet “clinical, athletic, and functional goals,” patients with whom he often forms strong bonds, as he works regularly with them several times a week over the course of weeks and sometimes months
As Rich continues to keep up with current trends in rehabilitation and to mentor volunteers,
students and interns, he recalls those who guided him along the way He expresses gratitude to Rich Romash, the physical therapist, in whose office Rich Crowell first interned and who mentored Crowell in his early years as a clinician Then he loops back to his high school days, remembering that “ geometry with Mr Merritt, chemistry with Ms. Palazzo, and algebra with Mr. Crawford set the

groundwork for [his] interest in health, physiology and exercise science ” But more importantly, he says, “ set the foundations for problem solving and strong work habits that would help me through my undergraduate and graduate education ” Camden Catholic is proud to have been one of the stepping stones for Rich Crowell’s outstanding career in helping others get on their feet and on the path to their own accomplishments
QUAN HA, class of 2021, believes STEM education is “crucial in grammar schools and high schools ” In fact, she wishes she had been exposed to research and other scientific work at a younger age. However, this research assistant at the CUNY Advanced Science and Research Center, did not miss any educational boat, thanks to Dr An Nguyen, her AP Biology teacher at Camden Catholic Quan’s high school experience ignited her passion for research and motivated her to join a lab before she even knew how far she would take it Quan explains, “[Dr Nguyen] encouraged critical thinking and guided me in writing my first research paper and in creating visual representations. Her engaging teaching methods went beyond textbooks, involving various activities that made biology fun ”
When applying for college, Quan was further influenced by a book she read titled Your Brain and You by Dr Nicky Hayes, which she says, “sparked my interest in neuropsychology and
neuroscience.” Long fascinated with the mysteries of the brain, Quan is now doing research that focuses on “the role of dopamine in memory formation and how the process evolves with age ” She is currently investigating “the activity of the lateral entorhinal cortex during the transition from encountering a novel object to recognizing it as
familiar ” She’s especially proud that she was one of four authors to publish a paper on the topic in the European Journal of Neuroscience
Quan found dopamine rather challenging to study because of its sensitivity and thus the requirement for meticulous consideration of every variable that could influence the brain activity of the lab mice used in the research “The process, ” she says “ can be complex and stressful, as [researchers] strive to account for all potential factors ”
If her work in the lab seems daunting to the uninitiated, Quan finds it “the most enjoyable part ” of her day She elaborates: “Whether it’s using the microscope to observe cells or performing immunohistochemistry, every aspect of working with cells excites me Despite repeating these tasks four or five times a week, they never lose their appeal.”
Quan Ha, with her diligence in the laboratory and her genuine excitement for science, will usher in a brighter future for many.
Though JUSTIN SEO, class of 2021, has experience in clinical research, he finds his current work as a patient care technician at St Peter’s University Healthcare in New Brunswick to be the most rewarding work he has done to date. His function is to support hospital staff in many different bedside care tasks The rising senior, majoring in genetics on a pre-med track at Rutgers University, is not rattled by the sound of bed alarms, he says, that are going off the minute he enters the hospital floor In fact, Justin says, it signals the “thrill of the challenge” and the opportunity to “ encounter a different person with their own unique story ” As someone who loves conversation, he brings an appreciative ear to those who are in pain and distress He is proud, he says, “of the interactions and tasks completed to maintain the patients’ well-being ”
Hospital work is challenging and Justin’s night shift hours can make it especially taxing What makes it all worth it for him is being able to meet
“the responsibilities that the field of healthcare brings ” It is nothing short of exciting, he says, to “acknowledge the individual role that you carry to collectively establish quality healthcare ”
Justin’s goals for himself as he prepares to enter the medical field is to “make sure that patients are all being treated with respect and dignity ” He handles those who come under his care as, he says, “how [he] would treat close relatives and loved ones ”
As he moves forward in his journey to becoming a physician, Justin recalls the educational foundation that Camden Catholic provided for him He says his “classmates, the faculty, and the learning atmosphere were one of a kind.” He expresses special gratitude to Dr An Nguyen “for teaching [him] how to be confident in overcoming obstacles in and out of the classroom ” He attributes his passion for STEM education to her The science education that Justin Seo enjoys so much could have led him down many different career paths. With passion for medicine and compassion for people, he will be a great asset wherever he chooses to go in healthcare
Writing Their Way Around the World
From
erudite textbook authors, to hard news journalists, to poets and fiction writers, these CCHS alums have had readers turning pages and scrolling screens for decades.
MICHAEL CANARIS, class of 1998, is a systematic theologian who mainly writes technical and specialized books and essays for an academic readership He is Associate Professor of Ecclesiology & Systematic Theology at Loyola University Chicago and he is Co-Director of the Miguel Pro, S J Pastoral Protagonism Initiative at the University’s Institute of Pastoral Studies
Mike has written or edited four books and is currently working on two more In addition, his work with the Vatican’s Pontifical Commission for Latin American and Dicastery for Culture and Education requires him to consult on, write and edit materials that support the wider church
As an author and public intellectual, Mike has lived in Boston, New York, Durham UK, Rome, and Chicago He spends time each summer with family who live on the Spanish island of Mallorca Yet, he maintains connection to his South Jersey roots with other kinds of writing: frequent letters, emails, and texts to CCHS high school friends as well as a weekly column for the Camden Diocese’s Catholic Star Herald
It is no surprise then to hear Mike say, “Writing along with teaching and administrative work, sits
at the absolute center of my career and identity.”
Communicating the theological and philosophical complexities in the effort to help others understand esoteric ideas requires an intellectual engagement with language that Mike clearly loves and in which he excels. Another dimension to this
“The only way to learn how to write is to engage in the process intentionally and repeatedly over long periods of time...”
- Michael Canaris
writer emerges when he refers to his experiences around the world and immersing himself in the Italian, Spanish, and Catalan languages, saying, “[such encounters] have both increased my love of the rhythms and particularities of word choice and usage, and broadened my horizons beyond the borders of the United States ”
Back to the nitty-gritty of composition, Mike calls writing “ a complex and knotty endeavor ” And gives this sage advice: “The only way to learn how to write is to engage in the process intentionally and repeatedly over long periods of time, and bolster those labors with an unswerving commitment to reading a diversity of sources, styles, and viewpoints ”
As a reporter for United Press International, JOE GAMBARDELLO, class of 1972, had stories published in newspapers around the world, but his very first was in the Camden Catholic school newspaper, called simply The Paper Even then he knew he wanted to be a foreign correspondent and soon he would be on his way to writing for papers with more resonant names After college at Fordham University, where he wrote both news and some poetry, he went on to become a reporter for several papers, including the New York Daily News, New York Newsday, and the Philadelphia Inquirer
Now retired, Joe started as a copy boy at UPI in 1976 By the 1980s he was a foreign correspondent based in London, reporting from Europe, East Africa, and the Persian Gulf After 44 years of being both writer and editor at top tier newspapers and teaching at the Columbia University School of Journalism, he still remembers the excitement of his days as a rookie reporter, particularly seeing his byline appear across the country on his 1977 story about the arrest of the serial killer Son of Sam.
Though he didn’t relish interviewing victims of crime or disaster, he says, “I discovered that some people wanted to open up, needed to open up, and I was there to help them ”
Another rewarding part of his life as a wordsmith was the freedom he had to write stories of personal interest, giving him a window on the lives of others “I often sought to see what it was like to undertake jobs or activities common to other people ” Such journalistic openness had him doing everything from digging clams with professional clammers on Long Island, to tagging eaglets and bear cubs with New Jersey state wildlife biologists, to harvesting cranberries in Chatsworth in the Pinelands, to spending a winter night with a toll taker on the Ocean Parkway in Cape May County He even sold candy at Aunt Charlotte’s in Merchantville the weekend before Christmas
It seems that story content alone was not satisfactory for Joe Language itself had an allure and still does. “I love it when words come together and sound just right ” The “nice turn of phrase” is gratifying for writer and reader alike That kind of accomplished writing comes from honing two particular skills that Joe says he developed in himself over the years and passed on to those he, as editor and teacher, has mentored: “Listen closely and think hard about word choices ”
Since his time at Camden Catholic, Joe Gambardello has covered a lot of ground in the field of journalism A thread from then to now is a journal he has kept “ on and off since high school ” “It’s a good way to practice writing and distill thoughts ” They are words of advice he takes to heart His goal now, he says, “is to keep writing my memoirs ”
About books and writing, her love since middle school, CLAIRE MARINO, class of 2020, says, “I have been the writer, the editor, the reader, the designer, the publisher, and the tutor Every single role has taught me something different about a craft I thought I knew and continued to challenge me from every angle.”
In May of this year Claire left Loyola University Maryland, having graduated summa cum laude with an undergraduate degree in three disciplines: a double major in Writing and Communications/ Journalism and Publishing, and a minor in English Literature In September she is heading to the University of St. Andrews in Scotland to pursue a Masters of Literature with a concentration in Creative Writing
Claire has packed a lot of writing experience into four years of college, taking every opportunity from editing the newspaper, to publishing in the
literary magazine, to teaching in the University Writing Center, to interning with Apprentice House Press, where she worked closely with contemporary authors, editing their manuscripts and designing their book covers
As for her own writing style, Claire says her preferences have changed and developed over the years. While in middle school she wrote exclusively genre fantasy In high school she wrote a coming-of-age romance for young adults and, of course, poetry for The Emerald, the CCHS literary magazine College had her experimenting with literary fiction, more poetry, and creative non-

fiction. Most recently some of her writing has been influenced by memoirs, which she loves, and the work of novelist Rachel Cusk, whose “ commentary on human interaction,” says Claire, “has been a huge inspiration to me in my own writing ”
Claire says she hopes to publish novels that “challenge the reader’s perception of themselves and the world around them.” She is “much more interested in looking inward to find what we all have in common and emphasizing that through a shared language ” For all the maturity and wisdom in that statement, Claire, like all good writers, is open to growth and development, as she says, “I look forward to seeing how my preferences and inclinations continue to change as I age and learn ” Enthusiastic from a young age, Claire remembers this: “In grade school I wrote one descriptive essay and fell in love ” She took three creative writing electives in middle school and not one to just wait for things to happen started the creative writing club She is an energetic wordsmith who delights in every aspect of putting books in the hands of readers Surely one day you will hold a book authored, edited, designed or published by Claire Marino in yours.
Here is how ASHOK KARRA, class of 1998, now an Associate Professor of Government at Odessa College in Odessa, Texas, says about what lays the foundation for much of the writing he does these days: “I read old books with an eye to how political philosophy works for us ” There is much to be gleaned from those “old books” and much to impart to younger scholars. Toward that end he writes “about things like what Nietzsche thinks about freedom ” He has written about the prevalence of shamelessness in current culture and posited how the Ancient Greeks would have responded to what it takes to succeed in mass media and social media today
Ashok, who was awarded “Rookie of the Year” in 2024 by Odessa College School of Arts and Education, has presented academic papers with such diverse titles as “Heidegger and the Failure of Innocence,” “How to Harness the Power of Literary Studies,” “Writing Oneself,” and “Poetry and Nihilism.” Bringing his ideas to groups on another tier, he has offered his expertise to high school creative writing and composition classes with talks such as “Let’s Make a Literary Journal!” and “Research: What Dexter Does In His Laboratory.”
As a professor who is dividing his energies and attention among reading, writing, and teaching, Ashok still finds it necessary to make time to blog. Two recent blog posts reflect the depth and scope of this prof ’ s thought process One entry tells why philosophers Heidegger and Nietzsche “ are insistent in talking about philosophy happening in cold, remote places,” while another blog entry is about his work with the English Honor Society on campus and their success in going to the National Convention “No small feat,” he says, “for a community college in a town dominated by oil

fields ” He marvels at those students who, despite the pressure to pursue high-paying jobs, remain in literary studies because “ they know that if they don’t write and think about literature, the generation after them will have nothing. It’s really striking to see that depth of moral purpose ”
Such work seems to be fulfilling Ashok’s personal goal “ to keep [his] scholarship relatable while not letting it collapse into esoterica ” He encourages his students to see the value in journaling, declaiming that “ you cannot afford to let your best thoughts and questions disappear without a trace. ” Recalling his time as a student at Camden Catholic, Ashok says it “ gave [him] a great foundation for exploring all things writing,” but in the ensuing years there was a lot of growth “It took me something like twenty years to know what I was doing,” he quips
It is certainly clear from his academic successes that Ashok Karra absolutely knows what he’s doing Camden Catholic High School is proud to be the place where some of his intellectual endeavors began
With ambition to become not only a novelist but also an editor and perhaps a literary agent, LINDSEY D’AMBROSIO, class of 2018, says that all writing serves a purpose and is essential Most of all, she says, “writing allows me to understand myself better and give others a chance to understand me better it connects me with other people who have the same thoughts as me or people who differ from me and can show me another perspective I didn’t consider.”
When her own perspective on a particular topic is fully formed, Lindsey gives her opinion on her website YA Know It. For her website articles and blog posts, Lindsey reads books that have received criticism and praise through social media, reviews them, and offers her own take on whether or not they deserve the attention they receive Lindsey is a voracious and astute reader who processes all she continues to learn from literature
and life to become a writer. Her work was published throughout her undergrad years at Rowan University in the university newsletter and on their website In addition to her own website writing, she writes for Odyssey Online. After internships as a literary agent assistant in New York and a web marketing assistant at a selfpublishing service, she is working toward getting certified in editing
About seeing her first published piece, Lindsey says, “It was exciting, but more than anything, the feeling of accomplishment is what I like most about being published.” And the charge that comes from completing a writing task never get old for this young writer, who says, “Every article I publish and every review I post gives me a sense of accomplishment that’s unmatched by any other project I do, and it fills me with a warmth of pride in myself ”
As Lindsey continues to hone her skills as a writer, she notes the benchmarks she has reached: “Aside from continuing to learn and improve the technical aspect of my writing, I’ve learned to have more control over it ” Giving an honest assessment of herself, she says, “I used to love flowery language and would try to make my writing sound poetic… and at times I overdid it ” From that lesson she concludes that “sometimes the most simplistic writing is actually the most intelligent and elegant ” Along with acknowledging that her career choice requires “ a great deal of selfmotivation, discipline, and hard work,” Lindsey says, “the biggest thing” she’s learned in becoming a writer is “patience and consistency ”
The website opinion pieces, the blogging, the editing it all comes together for Lindsey D’Ambrosio, a writer who continues to grow, learn, adapt, and reach out to fellow writers and readers, as she simply and elegantly says, “The ability to express myself, and the community that writing creates, is beautiful ”
IT’S NO MYSTERY…
The Arts Continue to Thrive at CCHS
A banner year for The Arts at CCHS culminated in a first for Camden Catholic, a spring musical in which the audience selected the ending! The Mystery of Edwin Drood entertained thousands during its seven performances on the FarinaGianfortune Stage at Grandi Auditorium.
Director Angela Leone shared “The performing arts seniors started their CCHS journey during the pandemic, with hybrid schedules, socially distanced rehearsals and masked performances. I believe these difficult, awkward beginnings have helped them grow into one of the most thoughtful, grateful and dedicated groups of young performers. While the material was fun to play with in rehearsal, it’s also the hardest creative work our actors have ever had to do. The characters are broad, the story is winding, the vocals are demanding, and the pace is non-stop. But, all of the students involved in the cast, crew and band have met the challenge head on.”
Bravo to the entire CCHS Performing Arts family for achieving this incredible feat!
ARTS HONORS AND EXPERIENCES

Lindsay Anderson graduated from Gwynedd Mercy University with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice.
Update your email address and share your personal, professional and higher education accomplishments at www.camdencatholic.org or email kate.bieg@camdencatholic.org.

I am so excited to embark on my teaching journey and share my same love and passion with my students!”

She completed her Bachelor in Health Science in 2023, and Master’s in Healthcare Administration this year as part of a 3+1 dual degree program. She now begins her next steps at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine for Physician Assistant school.

She graduated Summa Cum Laude with 4.0 GPA and was the recipient of Academic Excellence in Biochemistry Award at commencement, she also earned Dean's List eight consecutive semesters. Isabella shares: “I successfully defended an Undergraduate Honors Thesis entitled ‘The Downstream Effect of GATA-4 Knockdown on Developing Muscle Cells’ after three years of wet lab research and experimentation. I am attending Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine Elmira in pursuit of becoming a pediatric cardiologist. Part of what made my academic journey at Marymount so unique and prosperous was the Oxford-Style Honors Program, which heavily emphasizes the importance of research and writing. As an undergraduate science major in the honors program, I had the opportunity to study various mutations that cause congenital heart disease, build and program echocardiograms, and conduct a series of specific experiments to study that pathways of heart disease. Each of these projects demanded a written report, which culminated in a fifty-four page thesis that I successfully defended in April. I attribute my ability to convey such complex topics in a precise and understandable matter to the literary development I obtained at Camden Catholic High Schools. Thanks to Mr. D'Antonio's grammar and syntax lessons, my professors were always amazed at my straightforward sentences. Mrs. Maccherone always encouraged me to be creative with my writing and construct pieces that not only flowed but also caught the reader's attention. I am forever grateful for Mrs. Werner-Kaiser's passion for research, as introduced me to the proper research process and peaked my interest in nonfiction, expository writing. Each liberal arts and STEM course that I took at Marymount, including my biology, chemistry, and physics classes, required some sort of written report or project. Conveying my ideas and findings seemed only natural after being taught the art of writing by the most dedicated and well-versed CCHS teachers.”
Maya Perreira completed her time at the BCIT Cosmetology Program, earning a RCBC Cosmetology license. She is currently working as a hairstylist and makeup artist at Salon Duo in Willingboro while pursuing her associates degree in Business Administration.

D’ANASTASIO DEDICATION
On June 18, 2024, on what would have been Dante D'Anastasio's 110th birthday, Camden Catholic was honored to bless and dedicate his portrait, which now hangs in the Ethel Mae Hocker Information Commons at CCHS
Dante D’Anastasio was a registered architect, engineer and land planner in New Jersey and was a registered architect in Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware, and Georgia. In 1960, he led the architectural planning of the brand new Camden Catholic school building in Cherry Hill
Monsignor Andrew Martin, President Emeritus, blessed the portrait in grateful praise to God for giving Dante the skill to design a home of learning and faith for Camden Catholic students
Along with the portrait, Duke D'Anastasio gifted a generous donation of $25,000 to The Fund for Camden Catholic which will endow future scholarships based on merit and need for incoming students.
He was the founding partner in 1965 of D’Anastasio, Lisiewski & Tarquini (DLTL) which was based in Camden for over 50 years Dante was married to his wife Ursula for 64 years Dante and Ursula’s children Angela ‘59 and John “Duke” ’65, and daughter-inlaw Kathleen ‘65 are proud graduates
Dante's children, Duke '65, Angela '59 and daughter-in-law Kathleen '65 and his grandchildren were present for the dedication.
GUIDANCE OFFICE DEDICATED TO JACK PHIPPS
CCHS was honored to welcome the Phipps family home to CCHS, along with many of Jack's colleagues, friends and former students, to celebrate his life and legacy by dedicating the Office of Guidance to him after the May Mental Health Awareness fundraiser in his honor
Thanks to the support of so many of our alumni, current and former faculty who contributed $28,330, the Jack Phipps Memorial Fund went above and beyond its goal to honor Jack's years of love and care for CCHS students
The Fund will accomplish a number of goals intended to immortalize Jack Phipps' contributions to our community and to expand guidance and mental health services at Camden Catholic
● See the dedication and renaming of the CCHS guidance office for Mr Jack Phipps;
● Fund a physical upgrade/improvement within the guidance office;
● Support the acquisition of additional guidance staff specifically aimed at addressing mental health services; and
● Rename the annual guidance scholarship in Jack Phipps' honor
Secure Your Legacy and the Future of Catholic Education through a Planned Gift to Camden Catholic
Since 1887, Camden Catholic High School has endeavored to educate diverse learners and develop innovative leaders who are steeped in the Catholic tradition of Mercy. For nearly 140 years, this mission has driven our efforts to provide an educational experience rooted in faith, academic excellence, and service to others. As we look to the future, we recognize the vital role our community plays in sustaining and enhancing our mission As a member of that community, one of the most impactful ways you can contribute is through planned giving.
What is Planned Giving?
Planned giving refers to any major gift, made in lifetime or at death as par t of a donor’s overall financial and estate planning. Such gifts often allow donors to make larger contributions than they could from their income These gifts can take many forms and offer many tax benefits, including;
● Beques ts - Including Camden Catholic in your will or trust is a simple and effective way to make a lasting impact while potentially reducing your own estate tax liability.
● Char ita bl e Trus ts (CRTs ) - These trusts provide income to you or your beneficiaries for a set period, after which the remaining assets benefit the school. (By transferring appreciated assets into a CRT, you avoid immediate capital gains tax. The trust can sell the assets without incurring capital gains tax, allowing the entire proceeds to be reinvested )
● Li fe Insurance - By naming Camden Catholic as a beneficiary of your life insurance policy, you can make a significant future gift with relatively modest current costs. (With Camden Catholic named as the beneficiary, the policy proceeds are removed from your estate, potentially reducing estate taxes )
● Retirem ent Plan A ssets - Designating Camden Catholic as a beneficiary of your retirement plan can be a tax-efficient way to suppor t the school (Retirement accounts, such as I RAs and 401(k)s, can be heavily taxed if left to heirs. By naming Camden Catholic as a beneficiary, you can avoid income taxes that might otherwise be due )
How to Get Star ted?
Planning your legacy is a deeply personal and significant decision We invite you to explore the possibilities of planned giving with Camden Catholic. Our Advancement office is here to assist you and your advisors in creating a gift that meets your philanthropic and financial goals.
For more information on planned giving, please co ntact A ngel a Leon e Carrozzino, Director of Dono r Experie nce & Al umni Engage ment, at 856-663-2 247 or angel a.l eon e@camdencatholic.org. Together, we can secure your legacy and our future while continuing our mission to nur ture minds, hear ts, and spirits.
Thank you for considering this profound way to support our school community.
Honoring the Legacy of Fr. Joe Capella
Camden Catholic is proud to announce the founding of a memorial scholarship fund to honor the life and legacy of beloved former Rector, Rev. Father Joseph Capella, fondly remembered by students, faculty, and staff as Father Joe Father Joe passed away in 2022 after prolonged illness, but the words of his final address to the Camden Catholic community continue to inspire “You are now called as alumni of CCHS not to live in the same world as others, but to live in the same world differently ”
The Reverend Father Joseph Capella Memorial Scholarship Fund aims to elevate students who indeed live differently Scholarships will be awarded to students who show a great commitment to their Catholic faith through their involvement in parish life and service to the community. In addition to providing four-year scholarships to qualified candidates, monies raised will also fund the renovation and renaming of Camden Catholic’s courtyard into the Capella Commons, a physical space that will honor Father Joe’s legacy where students can gather to eat, read, pray, meditate, socialize, perform, and so much more
Camden Catholic will host a private event to officially launch the Reverend Father Joseph Capella Memorial Scholarship Fund at the start of the 2024-25 academic year. Plans for the Capella Commons will be unveiled at that time as well
“Father Joe’s work as a school leader and pastor left an indelible mark on all he met He inspired his parishioners, students, faculty, and staff to center their relationship with Christ in all they said and did to give glory to His sacred name Camden Catholic was honored to be a part of Father Joe’s lifejourney, and we are proud to launch this fund to celebrate his lasting contribution and eternal legacy at CCHS ”
-Jack Wixted Chairman, Board
of Trustees
“It is our hope as a community that through this scholarship we will be able to offer a Camden Catholic education to students who will perpetuate Father Joe’s message of Calvary love ”
-Rory Sweeney President
What began 10 years ago as a novel idea has now grown to be perhaps, Camden Catholic’s most anticipated event of the year Irish Giving Day grows annually, both in excitement, creativity, fun and in donations for The Fund for Camden Catholic For the 10th celebration in 2024, CCHS asked our alumni and donors to Level Up in support of Camden Catholic, and you delivered to the tune of $322,000, our largest Irish Giving Day to date!
New this year, CCHS partnered with donor platform, Givebutter, to offer ease of donations, and real-time tracking of donors Givebutter was especially helpful to our Irish Athletics teams as they were able to keep their own fundraising pages and monitor outreach
The Irish Giving Day assembly was unmatched as faculty, staff, alumni and students battled on the Mario Kart course while enjoying the hilariously entertaining duo of Finn Mazzola ‘27 (as Bowser) and Mr Mike Kettelberger ‘12 (as Mario) Irish Cheer, our friendly bagpiper Mr. Thom Moore, and our leprechauns Jackson Young and Jack KellyLyons helped to keep the Irish pride alive all throughout the day

The greatest number of gifts to CCHS are unrestricted cash donations, known as CCHS’s Greatest Need, to The Fund for Camden Catholic Gifts can also be restricted to tuition assistance, arts or athletics, including specific sports These gifts make strides toward helping us maintain a competitive value proposition for families seeking a Catholic education for their children.
The Shamrock Society
The Shamrock Society is our giving club for donors who contribute $1,000 or more to The Fund for Camden Catholic each year Members of this society send an outward message that they know Camden Catholic and its students are a worthy investment
Tuition Assistance
Approximately one third of our students receive some form of tuition assistance based on a standardized assessment of financial need. Your gifts help each of our families continue to choose Catholic education All recipients are chosen based upon academic performance and demonstrated financial need.
Why Tuition Assistance Matters
For years, the Sisters of Mercy were able to contribute their services to Camden Catholic High School to reduce the cost of tuition, thereby making a Catholic education affordable for families Today, the rising costs of healthcare and technology attribute to a higher cost of education, and tuition must be increased accordingly
What can I do?
• Contribute to tuition assistance and you will afford a student the opportunity to find themselves, uncover talents, grow academically and spiritually, and develop leadership skills for a 21st century world.
• Named scholarships can both support a student and honor a living individual, family, group, or memorialize a loved one
