MARY ANN WARDLOW LAWNSIDE
Camden County Congressional Freedom Award
Mary Ann Wardlow is the first woman to be elected Mayor in the Borough of Lawnside. Her profound care for the community and her devotion to public service are a family affair.
Mayor Wardlow’s inspiration to get involved in serving her neighbors throughout the Borough comes from her mother and grandparents, whose often-repeated guidance that “your community was your family” and that “you are responsible for looking after your neighbors” took root in her heart at an early age.
Over the past 46 years, Mayor Wardlow and her husband Earl have resided in Lawnside, developing deep, caring relationships throughout the community. Involvement in Borough and County civic organizations has been a highlight of their lives for decades.
From volunteering as a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader to 27 years of service as a Lawnside Council member; from serving on a host of Council committees and the board of the Mount Peace Cemetery, the scope of Mayor Wardlow’s service and knowledge is a model for all aspiring public servants.
Working collaboratively with members of the Lawnside Council, Mayor Wardlow has been instrumental in obtaining funds for the Public Works and Wayne R. Bryant Senior Citizens Recreational Buildings; enlarging the Police Department, and Department of Public Works; bringing ShopRite to Lawnside after Pathmark closed and working with the Lawnside School Board of Education to ensure voter support for all children of the Borough.
Mayor Wardlow has always tried to live up to what her mother instilled in her: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, and you will be obeying all of God’s commandments. It’s clear that she has amply succeeded.
JIM DESIMONE COLLINGSWOOD
Jim DeSimone of Collingswood has been giving his all to his local chapter of PFLAG, an LGBTQ+ advocacy organization, since its founding in 2010. PFLAG is the nation’s first and largest organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people, their parents, families, friends, and allies.
PFLAG is committed to creating a world where diversity is celebrated and all people are respected, valued, and affirmed through grassroots advocacy work, support groups, and community outreach.
Over his 11 years with Collingswood PFLAG, Jim has served as the organization’s Social Media Manager, Vice President, and Acting President. Jim was recently reappointed for his fourth term as Vice President, a testament to his commitment and enthusiasm for enriching and representing his community. His passion for queer visibility and acceptance throughout society comes through in his work facilitating support group meetings and his delight in the human heart’s ability to grow and love.
A pillar of Camden County’s community of volunteers, Jim has played a crucial role in many families’ shift from denial to full acceptance and affirmation of their LGBTQIA+ loved ones.
ANTON DYER PENNSAUKEN
Anton Dyer – known affectionately throughout Pennsauken and Camden as Coach Twuan – has devoted his nearly 50-year career to coaching and managing youth sports in Camden City. After serving as an assistant coach to East Camden youth basketball and football teams during his own teen years, Coach Twuan founded his own neighborhood tackle football team that played other neighborhood teams throughout the city.
Coach Twuan’s long tenure with the Cramer Hill Rockies, later the Camden P.A.L. Bulldogs, led to 16 championships across three weight divisions in the Camden City Youth Football League. In his capacity as the President of the Camden P.A.L. Bulldogs, Coach Dyer now organizes Youth Tackle Football, Cheerleading, Flag Football, Football Camps, and Coaches’ Clinics.
In addition to his tireless work with Camden’s youth, Coach Dyer currently serves as a Board Member and Junior Division President of the Tri-County Midget Football League, and mentors all new football coaches in the Camden City Bulldogs Football Organization. Coach Dyer’s decades of contributions to meaningful and joyful opportunities for youth development throughout the region have touched the lives of thousands.
PETER J. FONTAINE HADDONFIELD
Haddonfield resident Peter (“Pete”) Fontaine has been an open space preservation and environmental leader in Camden County, statewide, and nationally since 1990, when he started his legal career with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
His 33 years of public service in this area has included helping secure the passage of state, county, and local open space public referendum ballot questions in 1998, 2005, 2006, and 2013, and helping preserve more than 2,000 acres of farmland and open space in Camden County while chairing the County’s Open Space Advisory Committee from 1999-2013.
As the leader of his law firm’s Environmental Practice and Climate Change team, Pete helps his clients to clean up and prevent environmental pollution. He has played a critical role in defending climate scientists and the broader scientific research community against antiscience misinformation attacks, legal work for which he received several awards, including the “Defender of Science” award. Pete is a board member of the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association, an internationally recognized raptor conservation, and research organization, and is a former board member of the New Jersey Conservation Foundation.
WILLIAM & GLORIA JENSEN AUDUBON
William and Gloria Jensen, longtime residents of Audubon, are the founders of Luke’s Place, a unique nonprofit organization devoted to serving the adult special needs community. Since 2018, Luke’s Place – named for the Jensen’s own son, Luke – has provided social, athletic, and volunteer opportunities to our community’s growing population of residents who age out of public education services once they turn 21.
Programming and activities available through Luke’s Place are focused on ensuring that special needs adults are able to live successfully and purposefully as full members of society. Weekly activities and events include everyday social activities such as participating in dance and workout classes, volunteer opportunities, and much more.
William and Gloria are also volunteer coaches of the Luke’s Place Special Olympics teams for basketball, bowling, and cornhole. They both strive to make the special needs adults of South Jersey feel complete and included, while making happy memories that last a lifetime.
TOM MARTIN HADDON TOWNSHIP
Tom Martin lives in Haddon Township and is known throughout Camden as someone to call right away when another person needs a helping hand. From transportation to moving day help, from sourcing an air conditioner to providing a change of clothes, Tom is ready to serve.
Tom’s years of service on the Board of Directors for the County’s Interfaith Homeless Outreach Council (IHOC) endeared him to fellow advocates for our region’s unhoused men, and to IHOC’s clients themselves. Not content with serving on the organization’s Board, Tom also ran their weekly mentor night.
Founding the Camden County Pop-Up Library has dramatically expanded Tom’s positive impact on the community. Pop-Up Libraries (PULs, for short) are an on-the-go supplement to library services provided by the County and our municipalities. Tom hosts weekly PULs at three Camden locations: Walter Rand Transportation Center, Cathedral Kitchen, and Near Zion Baptist Church. No one needs to worry about paperwork or fines: all books are donations and readers can keep all of the books they choose. CCPUL has expanded to include The Book Ark Project, which places weatherproof outdoor cabinets throughout the county. Most Book Arks are in Camden and Pennsauken, and all are managed by volunteers. Readers can take a book one day, and leave a book the next, making it easy for everyone to share the love of reading.
PEPE PIPERNO CHERRY HILL
Adolfo “Pepe” Piperno, a son of Camden and longtime Cherry Hill resident, founded the Domenica Foundation in 1991 in honor of his mother, Domenica Piperno. Although he enjoyed a long and successful career in retail management and ownership, Pepe’s entrepreneurial spirit and lifelong embrace of dovere, an Italian term meaning duty or responsibility, led him to pursue doing good in addition to doing well.
Guided by Domenica’s generous and compassionate example, the Piperno family were soon delivering food, diapers, and Christmas gifts to local charities. The Domenica Foundation quickly expanded to sponsor scholarships to Catholic schools for children from low-income Camden families to attend.
The profound influence of two local activist Catholic priests –Father Michael Doyle of Sacred Heart Church and Father Robert McDermott of St. Joseph’s ProCathedral – reverberates throughout the Foundation and its work today.
The Domenica Foundation now partners with nonprofit organizations throughout South Jersey to fund programs that provide education, food, housing, and other resources that open the door of opportunity and enable all of our neighbors to thrive.
NICOLE ROBERTS PENNSAUKEN
Nicole Roberts, a lifelong resident of Pennsauken, comes from a long line of public service-oriented community members. The daughter of founding members of the Homestead Youth Association, Nicole learned the value of community-based recreational opportunities at a very young age. Participating in HYA’s programs led her to understand the value of donating her own time and talents in service to others, which flowed naturally into a passion for her own volunteer work.
Nicole was a strong supporter of schoolbased activities during the years her four children attended Pennsauken Public Schools and was a very active volunteer with the Pennsauken Youth Athletic Association for more than a decade, taking on responsibilities for fundraising, managing the snack stand, and handling athlete registrations.
Nicole’s current volunteer work highlights the variety and versatility of her interests, including supporting underserved communities with the Obsidian Charitable Foundation and continuing to give back to her hometown as a member of Pennsauken’s Township Committee.
Nicole is the first African American woman to be elected to Township Committee, and is the first to serve in the role of Deputy Mayor. In 2022, she and Mayor Jessica Rafeh made history by serving on the first female- and minority-led Township Committee in Pennsauken.
MIGUEL RUBERT CAMDEN
Miguel Rubert lives and breathes for the City of Camden. His lifelong devotion to advocacy and community service first took root in childhood, thanks to the example set by clergy at his home parish, Holy Name Roman Catholic Church.
In his youth, Miguel was especially wellknown for his informal street ministry: walking around the neighborhood, offering hugs, and sharing prayers with members of the community. His sincere passion for working and building within his community always shines through in whatever he does.
The community organizations Miguel has worked with over the years include Holy Name Parish, the Hispanic Youth Council of Camden, the Guadalupe Family Services of Camden, the Bridge Program, and several Camden City Elementary Schools.
GURMEET SINGH (ASHU) LINDENWOLD
Lindenwold’s Gurmeet Singh is the essence of quiet service: giving of his time, prepared meals, and financial assistance to vulnerable community members without talking much about it.
Gurmeet provides food and time to many local organizations including The Hunger Project, Camden County International Day Parade, Khalsa Aid Project, Indian-American Society of New Jersey, Guru Nanak Sewak Jatha of New Jersey, Asian American Alliance of South Jersey, United Sikhs, and The Shradha Foundation.
During the worst early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Gurmeet also provided free weekly meals to hospitals and law enforcement officials. His current work includes offering direct financial assistance to veterans and distributing free turkeys and Thanksgiving meals to Lindenwold senior citizens.
In addition to his routine provision of meals to organizations throughout the region, Gurmeet is deeply invested in making sure that low-income neighbors, senior citizens, and disabled people have easy access to resources they need. A one-man Uber, he often chauffeurs elderly neighbors and ensures that they are escorted to their destinations safely. Gurmeet successfully manages more than 80 volunteers across the organizations he works with. He has reached 3,000 hours of community service so far and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.
QUEEN N. STEWART VOORHEES
Few people understand the urgency of now like Queen Stewart does. On the day before her 36th birthday, the Voorhees resident – a mother of two girls and owner of a successful law practice – was diagnosed with breast cancer. This shocking news led her to the purpose that has driven her for the last year: encouraging everyone she knows, and even those she hasn’t met yet to identify and pursue their dreams today.
Queen has educated and inspired others by sharing her cancer journey via social media as well as speaking engagements.
Creative pursuits Queen would never have attempted prior to her cancer diagnosis – writing and performing stand-up comedy and recording her first studio single – became essential activities during treatment. Queen embodies the truth that no one should wait until tragedy strikes to find their greatest joys in life. Carpe diem!

MARY CROSS 2NSPIREU BAND
Mary Cross is a singer who embodies authenticity and honesty through the gift of song. Born and raised in Camden, New Jersey, Mary is a Classic Soul, Jazz and R&B artist who is driven by her innate passion for music. She founded 2NspireU band over 8 years ago and they have consistently SOLD OUT performances throughout the tristate area and beyond.
Her vocal tonalities can be described as rich, smooth, bold and warm with melodic intonations that often draw comparisons to the iconic Phyllis Hyman. An impassioned performer, Mary’s music has proven to be timeless and soul stirring. She has released 3 singles to notable reception even garnering a 2021 Soultracks nomination for Best New Artist and her single Promise was identified by Soultracks as one of the Top 100 songs of the year. Mary’s vocal delivery showcases both her range and versatility which resonate with listeners across multiple demographics and cultures.
As an artist Mary cites pivotal musical influences as Oleta Adams, Phyllis Hyman, Sarah Vaughan, Lizz Wright, Gregory Porter, Nancy Wilson, Nina Simone and a host of others.
February 3, 2023 marks the World Premiere release of Mary’s latest single “Meet Me On The Moon” recorded 32 years ago by the late Phyllis Hyman. Mary Cross 2NspireU sing the timeless classics that take listeners back down memory lane to a time when Love was King.
Mary Cross 2NspireU band are poised to change the status quo of the industry by capturing meaningful moments while tugging at heartstrings one song at a time! The debut album is scheduled for release in 2023.
