PINK OUT 2022 RED RIBBON WEEK TEACHER OF THE YEAR AND MORE...

A MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT As we enter the season of Thanksgiving, I cannot help but to reflect on all the challenges we have faced as a community over the past few years. I think of how deeply grateful I am to work for a school system and live in a community where we are willing to face the obstacles before us with grit, determination, and a spirit of resilience, and I am proud of how far we have come. William Arthur Ward once said, "Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings." I encourage you during this Thanksgiving season to remind one another of the many reasons there are to be grateful. During the holiday season, as you surround yourself by friends and family, I extend to you the warmest Thanksgiving wishes. May you smile recalling memories made and make new memories that will stay with you even after this season is over.

Dr. John Tucker

IF YOU DESIGN IT, THEY WILL PLAY

CAMDEN MIDDLE 8TH GRADE STEAM TEAM Mini Golf PBL Unit Field Trip On October 12, 2022, CMS sent their 8th grade STEAM team on a research study to Gregor MacGregor’s Mini Golf Course for their PBL unit. Students have been tasked with creating a mini golf course hole based on one of the 5 regions of Georgia using the STEAM design process, which encourages exploration as students ask, imagine, plan, create and improve upon their designs. Within the unit, the students are charged with researching a specific region in Georgia for landmarks, attractions, and demographics. Each group will design a mini golf hole around that specific region. In their groups, students will create a plaque that contains information about their chosen region, design a 3-D model of their mini golf hole that embodies the region's characteristics, create a par designation for their mini golf hole, complete measurement conversions from models to real life mini golf holes, and design a scaled model. As part of the research for their mini golf hole, the 8th grade team contacted the designer of the Gregor MacGregor course in Fernandina. Mr. David Bailey of Miniature Golf Solutions in Ormond Beach, Florida was able to answer questions posed by our students about the design process from the designer himself.

The 8th grade STEAM team is so grateful to Bryan Poynter of Gregor MacGregors Mini Golf Course for providing a hands-on environment for our students to work and explore. The collaboration between research and real-life application was ignited with the visit to Gregor MacGregor’s Mini Golf Course. This opportunity allowed for the students to actively engage with their peers, while simultaneously having fun. Groups were able to see first hand the design elements that go into creating a professionally designed mini golf course. This visit allowed students to observe, play, and measure 4 different holes on the course. These observations will allow students to improve upon their original designs, creating a higher engagement for players as each group incorporates more practically advanced obstacles and landscaping in their final product. The groups will present their final designs on display boards, as well as their academic STEAM journals, and 3-D models at the Camden Middle School STEAM Showcase on December 8, 2022. The ultimate goal will be to have their designs judged by a team of administrators and experts, in addition to the construction of a group’s winning design on school property. Our students are on their way to making our school and community a better place to learn and succeed.

The visitors then demonstrated the proper way to fold a flag and allowed selected students to practice folding flags under their guidance. The students were also presented with a “stars and stripes” pencil to commemorate the day. Thank you to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary for taking the time to teach us the way to show proper respect to the flag of our country!

CULINARY STUDENTS VISIT THE RITZ CARLTON Chef Holly Hicks, with the assistance of Samantha Dixon, took her advanced Culinary 2 students on a field trip to The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island, to get a behind the scenes tour of the culinary industry based in a hotel. Executive Pastry Chef, Sheldon Millett, took the students to completely around the hotel, starting in the Pastry Kitchen where Chef Holly worked after she graduated from Johnson & Wales University. From there, the students went to the Garde Manger Kitchen (the cold kitchen), where Chef Natalie Borrero explained what the GM kitchen does. They moved to the Banquet Production Kitchen and learned about high savory food production. The students were also able to see the two large ballrooms that could accommodate up to 1,000 guests. Chef Sheldon then brought the students to see the workings of Coquina, the oceanside restaurant where this small kitchen can serve up to 800 for lunch. Up next was SALT, the fine dining – 5-Diamond restaurant, and Coast Kitchen. At the end of the tour, the students, Chef Holly and Mrs. Dixon were treated to delicious meals in the Coast restaurant. Students were quoted saying, “This is the best meal ever!!!”, “When can we work here?!” and “This is the best day ever!” The students learned so much about what it takes to work in the kitchens of a hotel and see the inside workings of the organized chaos!
