Ghost Stories: Fox and Tanuki • 怪談狐と狸
YOSHINO Jiro (Japan 1929 | 36 min. | Black & White | Eng sub.) Never before seen outside of Japan, Ghost Stories: Fox and Tanuki is an extraordinary piece of early Japanese silent cinema - and a prewar horror film, to boot! This reimagining of a kaidan, or a classic ghost story especially popular in 19th century Japan, has a special twist however. Director YOSHINO takes a bit more for a comical approach to interpreting the legend of the titular kitsune, or shape-shifting fox, and the Japanese raccoon-dog tanuki. The film makes use of photographic techniques and lighting or shadowing effects to trick the audience, providing quite the spectacle.
