At CAMERA JAPAN, coming a bit earlier or staying a bit longer can bring you some pleasant joys. Like being surprised by one of our short interventions. These are short acts which will transport you briefly to another world. The past years have seen countless comical intermezzi, breathtaking martial arts demonstrations, and experimental dance performances.

USHIHARA Kiyohiko (Japan 1929 | 36 min. | Black & White | Eng sub.) Never before A peculiar subgenre of Japanese horror, derived primarily from the repertoire of kabuki theatre, revolved around ghost cats (bakeneko or kaibyo). In this pre-war classic, a jealous stage actress named Mitsue murders a cat belonging to a young woman who is in love with the same man as Mitsue. The spirit of the cat returns as a vengeful ghost. With a star performance by SUZUKI Sumiko, Japan’s first scream queen.

Japanese rope bondage performance

Asiana and Door will perform a demonstration of Japanese rope bondage (Shibari/Kinbaku). They are rope partners and teachers but also best friends. Their style of tying is emotional and often physically challenging but at the same time full of trust and vulnerability. It is an intimate encounter rather than acrobatics.

At the dawn of the 21st century “J-horror” films like Ring and Ju-on took the world by storm, but Japan’s history of onscreen horror stretches all the way back to the earliest days of cinema. Michael CRANDOL will discuss his new book Ghost in the Well: The Hidden History of Horror Films in Japan, which examines the forgotten roots of the Japanese horror film and the actress, SUZUKI Sumiko, who became Japan’s first horror movie star in the 1930s.

ASAKUSA by Ronin DE GOEDE

In 2016, Ronin DE GOEDE went to Japan with a mission: to photograph Horikazu’s work — and him working — for a publication on the art of traditional Japanese body suit tattooing.

ASAKUSA is his visual diary of the time he spent following Horikazu, the traditional Japanese tattoo master, in Tokyo’s Asakusa district.

Tsunagari

Tsunagari means “connection” in Japanese and that is what our opening performance is all about.

The connection between musician and dancer, between traditional Japanese music and urban dance, and between the performers and the audience. Taiko drummers SAKAUE Akira and OTANI Kanako will perform together with Joseph SIMON and open the festival in glamorous style with a short piece that can be seen, heard and felt.
