I don’t know the rules, nor do I care about them...

alexkoloskov Alex Koloskov is 36 years old, born and raised in Kiev, Ukraine and lives in Atlanta, GA now. He grew up in Kiev, Ukraine where he later attended college and received a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Needless to say, Alex never put his degree to work in its specialty. It was a time of economical collapse

after the fall of the Soviet Union, where the entire country was in chaos. This was when Alexe’s “official” education ended. Since graduating he never had any other formal education, all of his skills have been self-taught. Alex is a mix of technicality, innovation and out of the box thinking. He loves taking on technical

challenges in anything he does, including photography. As a photographer, Alex is completely self taught. As Alex said “ I don’t know the rules, nor do I care about them. I don’t follow the herd, I do it my way.” That’s turned out to be invaluable in what he does. It has allowed Alex to experiment, see outside the borders,

challenge the authorities and create a stunning photography style that is crisp, sharp and crystal clear. He is inspired by progress and movement. Alex is incredibly persistent and never takes “less than perfect” for an answer. If he doesn’t have the right tools, he’ll build them himself. Alex likes to make stuff happen.

japan through the camera live view

koujitomihisa Born in 1970 Japan, Fukuoka. Fundamentally Kouji looks into a finder, it is not photographed but a photograph is taken with a live view. When it says why it is... It is because photograph is being conscious of the height of a child’s eyes. Nostalgia can be felt by the photography from a low position. Please see Kouji’s world.

between past and present

“Documenting objects, places, or people doesn’t necessarily preserve them; it is preserving an observation. In the images, the photographer preserving herself.” Star Rush

starrush Star Rush is Seattle documentary and street photographer. She is an advocate of mobile photography. Rush’s photography explores the tug between past and present, the visual hiss and hums that evoke in visuals the listening experience of vinyl records. How do images mediate the cultural mythologies of an American Dream in recession? Her photos explore identity, mobility, independence, consumption, and an ethos web

of cool. These are evoked in lyrical, poetic images of made-in-Detroit cars parked on contemporary streets, objects of nearobsolescences individuals in public spaces (often alone), and, frequently, empty seats. Rush prefers to work in the “unrealness” suggested by black and white whenever possible. She says her mind and eye are working in shades of grey, the spaces between dark black and bright white: “This is not life. It’s a photo

of it,” she says. Her images describe place, people and objects as visually mediated artifacts of mundane, unstable remembrance, imbued with the remnants of popular culture of the 20th century as much as “real life” itself. Her subjects are captured in natural light and public spaces with an unassuming mobile iPhone. She is inspired by her experience as a Vietnamese American and is influenced by American blues and jazz, German Expression-

ism, and the films of the late American cinematographer, Haskell Wexler. Rush’s photography has been exhibited in Seattle, Philadelphia and Florida. Her work has been featured in print and electronic publications, such as Eye’em and iPhoneography.com, as well as Europe. Additionally, Rush’s poetry and essays have been published in literary journals. Rush is a founding member of Mobile Photo Group, a global cooperative comprised of photographers

document and creating compelling images on mobile devices. She is also a member of IDEA Odyssey, a visual artist collective and gallery in Seattle, Wash. She is a contributing editor for iPhoneography.com, a premier website for information, artists, and resources about mobile photography and its community. Star Rush teaches composition and rhetoric at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, where she lives with her partner and their 2 dogs and cat.

I like vivid colours

stephencandler Stephen was born in the seaside town of Scarborough on the East Coast of England in 1953. He is currently based in the historic City of York, with frequent forays to Southern Spain. Stephen has been interested in photography from an early age and his first SLR was a Canon AE1film camera which he bought in his early 20’s. Work and family life then took over the majority of Stephen’s time so his photography was limited to family

web

54

http://spcandler.zenfolio.com

“snaps”. Stephen rekindled his interest in photography a couple of years ago when he bought his first DSLR, a Canon 450D, before Stephen’s son wedding in October 2009. Stephen’s background is in Civil & Railway Engineering and latterly Computing although he was made redundant 9 years ago so he is now semi-retired. Stephen thinks his background reflects the type and style of photographs that he produces.

He has a passion for HDR photography and first became interested in this style after seeing some spectacular images on Flickr by a photographer called Mark Carline based in Chester in the UK. A further influence on Stephen’s work is the well-known HDR photographer Trey Ratcliff. Stephen has a straightforward view of photography/art - if you like it and it sustains your interest, then, for you, it is good.

For him, photography/art is very personal and he appreciates not everyone can like the same thing. He likes vivid colours and is not afraid to experiment, using the initial photo as a base to produce something he finds aesthetically pleasing. Stephen has a basic methodology, but each image is treated differently so becomes unique, depending on how the mood takes him. Stephen’s one and only claim to fame, so far, is

that his photo of Newcastle Central Station was highly commended in the Powerhouse Museum International Photo Competition 2011. As Stephen said “I am a photographer, not a writer, so I don’t do blogs, photogs or tutorials. Also, I am not a purist and what I do can be a bit controversial, but that depends on your point of view.” His future aim is to become more commercial and make his photographic work self-financing.

child’s imagination has no limits

marcinpycha Marcin works and lives in Poland, Krakow, a town that he has a very close connection to. He has been taking pictures all his life. He recalls a very funny scene from childhood when running around the garden holding his sister’s Cmena and taking pictures of absolutely everything. When the film was finished, he rewound it and started all over again. Child’s imagination has no limits. Truth to be told, the pictures from the camera

were saved in the child’s mind then. He didn’t need camera film or photographic paper. But it was back then, when Marcin was only a child. He thinks he copied his dad then and didn’t really know what that was all about. Although he remembered clearly those suns and clouds symbols on the lens of Cmena. The real kick start occured in the midle of secondary school when for the first time in the dark room he

saw a picture coming to live on the photographic paper. That was like magic. Every time he develops pictures in the dark room he remembers this moment when dark frames, shadows and spots appear on white paper. It was exactly this moment that made Marcin choose photography above many other interests and plans. Very technical and demanding high school and technical university didn’t kill this haunting thought

of magic of a picture. Everything seemed to escallate, taking more speed when he bought his first digital camera (in spite of the magical process that occurs in the dark room he hates the chemical process). Through the lens of this first camera he could combain his technical education with artistic soul and he could finaly create a complete whole. From then on he knew he wanted to do nothig else. Marcin completed few

photographic courses, he won few photographic competitions, took part in workshops with real masters of camera, Marcin is proud to say he organized few individual and collective exhibitions and had numerous publications in paper and electronic magazines. His photographs were placed on bilboards around Poland. He even gave few interviews. In present his main field is in street, fashion and documentary photograph.

photography Those three streams, although not at all connected, interest him the most and in them he sees his future. Marcin’s sense of aesthetics demands working with beautiful models in a studio, however the need of catching the moment and showing the truth is shown in street and documentary photography. When talking about documentary photography he means the type that William Eggleson does, “picturing life”.

voraciously capturing the world

helensotiriadis Originally from Greece, Helen Sotiriadis spent her childhood years in America reading science fiction and sitting on the roof, peering at the stars. When she learned that she was too short to fit an astronaut suit, she returned to Athens and studied architecture to make the most of her skills in art and science. She didn’t fall in love with it, though, so she searched for ways to branch out into variations on the theme.

web

http://www.helensotiriadis.com http://www.toomanytribbles.blogspot.com

122

After years of design work, she eventually managed to combine her interest in computers, her flair for teaching and her need to be creative by using, and helping others learn to use, CAD, writing textbooks, and contributing to the Olympic Games in her own corner of expertise. A stay in Beijing in 2007 marked the beginning of an intense addiction to photography. Her training in architecture helped

her out when composing a shot. To learn more, she would take pictures, experiment, and learn new techniques every day, and every night she’d scour books and the internet for more ideas and information. Today, she is never without her camera, voraciously capturing her world. Her themes include architecture and landscapes, the night sky, portraits, fleeting glimpses of her day and surpris-

ing macros of everyday objects. Her images and articles have been appeared in publications in the U.S., Germany, the U.K., China and Greece. Today, she is never without her camera, and she continues to share her enthusiasm with others, teaching photography and digital editing to anyone who has the patience to listen.

people, portrait and fashion

martaglinicka Marta’s interest in photography began in 2007. A year later she bought her first digital SLR camera, and so began her major adventure with photography. She started taking pictures of her friends (mostly girls), then when her skills improved she started cooperation with strangers. Marta works mainly in Warsaw and surrounding

areas. Her greatest passion is photography of people, portrait, and fashion, but she tries not to close only on those areas and she develops her skills in other types of photography. She works with stylists, designers, so that sessions are becoming more interesting and enjoyable. Photographing people and their emotions gives her great satisfaction.

Each person can count on her individual approach. Marta tries to show in her work, not only a beautiful face or body, but also an interesting personality, and extract from it only the best. Marta has several publications in various online magazines (Snap Me), the exhibition at Warsaw University and in Warsaw club “The Eve.

explore street photography

mikeshaw Mike was born in West Germany, where his dad being then a Protestant British soldier was married to an Irish catholic woman during the troubles in Ireland, so life was always going to be interesting. Mike was what they called an army brat and travelled around Europe as they were posted, but settled down in the UK at age 5. Mike had an early interest in photography as his father was one in the army working for the Royal Ordinance Corps doing web

aerial photography. Mike has been a frustrated artist most of his life, he wanted to go to University to study graphic art when he left school but circumstances forced him into work and he had been a working man all his life. It was in 2006, Mike decided to try photography, he had been through most other mediums but his lack of patience never saw anything through, he bought a cheap bridge camera and fell in love with photography. Mike

bought his first DSLR the following year, a Canon 400D and invested in a few lenses that he could afford and became completely addicted. Mike had issue in that he would never pick a book up to learn, he did not even read the instruction manuals that came with the camera. Mike looked at what other photographers were doing and set about trying to emulate their work by simply pressing buttons and playing with post editing. He was fortunate that

HDR processing came to be at the same time he was playing with post editing and he dove right in. Mike loved HDR, it allowed him to do so much that he could not do before. It was a while before Mike realised that the HDR process was simply replacing what skill he lacked with the camera itself. So he spent a lot longer teaching himself the camera, how to set it up, what it could and could not do. Now he uses HER as part of the post editing process rather than all and

as he progresses he finds he is using it less and less. Toward the end of 2010 Mike began to explore street photography more, he went on to take a few street portraits and simply fell in love with doing it. Mike meet many people, he got to hear their stories and he tried to understand what they have been through and where they came from. This has led him to new places in photography, places he hopes to explore more.

endless aproaches

felixwagner Felix bought his DSLR camera and the cheapest lens out there (50mm 1,8) eight months ago because he wanted to have more control over the composition and processing of the pictures he makes. Felix learned everything about how to manually control the camera but he didn´t have a concrete goal of what he wanted to accomplish by shooting photos. So he aimlessly made shots of everything and everyone until he joined Google+ and experienced web

the strong connection and interaction of the photography community. This was the first time he was confronted with street photography and was instantly fascinated by the wonderful everyday moments that have been captured by talented people all over the world. Felix made his first attempts in this genre about four months ago and although he had no experience at all he felt that the challenge to identify interesting mo-

ments and to compose, frame and make the right settings in a second was really addictive to him. “And apart from making the final shot you do not need a camera to sharpen your eyes and senses – it becomes a natural thing you do wherever you are”says Felix. “There are endless approaches to street photography. So the hardest thing to achieve is to find your own unique style which I definitely have not done yet”. Whenever Felix is on

the streets he tries to focus on geometry, symmetry, interactions of lights and colors and wait for the moment when the human factor makes this scenery a unique moment that will never occur again. As Felix said “You do not need a camera to see these moments. But I guess you can call yourself a street photographer when you sense a decisive moment to happen and you feel deeply upset not having a camera in your hand to capture it”. What he really

loves about street photography is that it makes you appreciate all the characters and little things that happen right in front of your eyes that you would not have noticed without the constant search for the perfect moments. And the greatest thing is… these moments will never stop and you can find them wherever you are.

secretly dream of being a nomad

jordanawright Jordana Wright is an independent photographer based in rural Illinois, in the United States. She and her husband run a portrait photography business, but she refuses to specialize or call herself a “this photographer” or a “that photographer”. She photographs everything that appeals to her - delicious food, Caribbean sunsets,

urban architecture, people, empty Midwestern vistas, abstracts... She is very lucky in that she loves her work and wakes up every day excited to find something new to shoot. When Jordana was a small child she lived in New York City, so she loves photographing cities from street level looking up - it reminds her of how small

she used to feel staring at the tops of buildings on the way to school. She has been getting into urban photography more and more recently. Jordana’s husband, Cassius, is endlessly supportive and utilizes social media mostly Google+ - to find new friends, photographers, and conversations about art and photographs

- it’s like the artistic salons of our generation. Having an online community of artists helps keep her photography fresh and exploratory. She loves to travel and secretly dreams of being a nomad, exploring the world through a camera. More of her work is available on her website and her blog.
