For its first edition, the Aerial Photography Awards (aerialphotoawards.com) invited photographers from around the world using drones, helicopters, kites, balloons, or airplanes to submit their best photos in an attempt to win $10,000. The competition received thousands of entries from 65 participating countries. The prestigious Jury, who voted without knowing the name or country of the participants, awarded 106 photos in 22 Categories and 11 photographers in the 6 master Categories. From the versatile list of awarded photos, a number of them stood out in the first places and received the “Aerial Photo of the Year 2020” Award: In the Daily Life category, “The Lady of the Sea“, a photo taken by Vietnamese photographer Duy Sinh, shows a fishing net thrown from a boat, which forms a woman’s face. In the Documentary category, photographer Marc Le Cornu takes first place with a photo of the Jersey Airport Rescue & Firefighting Service training on a burning plane. In the Transportation category, the first place goes to a photo of a merchant ship navigating in the middle of the ice in the Gulf of Finland, shot by Russian photographer Alexander Sukharev.

Joel Jochum’s enigmatic image of an energy storage facility in Germany received the jury’s best votes in the Industrial category. Chinese photographer Hua Shang’s image of a group of flamingos flying over Lake Natron in Kenya was chosen by the Jury in the Wildlife category. In the World in lockdown category, Dedicated to photos that deal with the consequences of the Covid 19 pandemic, the picture of the Indian photographer Prabu Mohan, depicting a building in Vietnam whose windows were all covered with the national flag as a sign of support, won first place. In the Architecture category, it’s the photo of the Belgian photographer Sebastien Nagy, portraying an almost abstract cityscape, that takes the first place. In the Sports category, it is a refined photo of a tennis player “Ball up”, by Australian photographer Brad Walls, which seduced the Jury. In the Waterscapes category, the image of the UK based photographer Kyle Vollaers of a surrealist iceberg drifting off the coast of Qeqertarsuaq, Greenland was awarded. The photo of a WWI ship ruin on the French coast, photographed by the Belgian photographer Reginald Van de Velde received

the best votes from the Jury in the Abandoned Places category. The Chinese photographer Yiran Ding and his photo of Shanghai seen through an airplane window won the Travel category.

In the Landscapes category, it’s a landscape from another world, shot in the highlands of Iceland by the Swiss photographer Sebastian Müller, that is best voted.

The colorful roofs of Gran Canaria Island shot by Sebastien Nagy win the Cityscapes category.

In the Abstract category it’s a photograph of the Tatacoa desert in Colombia, shot by the photographer Johan Vandenhecke, that is best voted.

In the Constructions category, it’s a photo of the Dubai Frame, known as “the largest photo frame in the world”, photographed by the Lebanese photographer Bachir Moukarzel who is in the first place.

In the World culture category, it is a photo of 600 000 devotees participating in the largest Eidul-Fitr congregation in Southeast Asia, taken by the Bangladeshi photographer Azim Khan Ronnie.

In the category Trees & Forests, the photograph of a herd of sheep crossing an autumn forest by Mehmet Aslan won first place.

In the Patterns category, a photo of multiple umbrellas crossing each other in the streets, taken by Japanese photographer Daniel Bonte won the first place.

In the Environmental category, the photo of farmers in the middle of a field devastated by floodwater, taken by the Bangladeshi photographer Azim Khan Ronnie received the best votes. It’s the series of montages made from hundreds of aerial photos by the Brazilian photographer Cassio Vasconcellos in the Digitally Enhanced category that caught the attention of the Jury. The poetic photo of a child trying to grab a plastic bag by Canadian photographer Ryan Koopmans won first place in the Fine Art Other category.

In the Accommodations category, the Jury chose a minimalist and colorful photo of the apartments of the Burj Khalifa, taken by the German photographer Kevin Krautgartner. In the Hotels category, the photo of clean white lodgings, shot in a hotel located in the Greek islands by Sebastien Nagy won first place.

AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR 2020 The title “Aerial Photographer of the Year 2020”, was awarded to photographer Sebastien Nagy (Belgium, photo), thanks to several awarded photos in different categories and a high average score. Residing in Brussels, the photographer began aerial photography on the rooftops of his city. His thoughts after receiving this award: “ To be honest, I had never participated in a contest before, but I had heard about this one in a very positive way, so I took part in the game. I didn’t think I would win anything and it was mostly for fun. So I was very surprised when I heard the good news. It was a bit hard to believe at first as it was the Grand-Prix, but I did feel a real joy and pride. To be named first in a contest where the theme is what we love most, our passion, is incredible and very satisfying! This award made me want to test myself in other things and why not, to be able to judge others in my turn one day ;-) .”

THE JURY The awarded photos were selected through a 10-day vote by the members of the Jury (photo). In order to elect the “Aerial Photographer of the Year 2020”, the photographer was selected on the average of the overall scores and the number of winning photos per photographer in different categories. The Jury includes Jeffrey Milstein who has exhibited in many museums and galleries around the world, Daniel Beltrá, winner of numerous prestigious photography awards, Dirk Dallas, seen as an early leader of the drone movement, Alex MacLean, author/co-author of thirteen books, Benjamin Grant, creator of the popular Instagram feed Daily Overview, Peter Essick, named Named one of the 40 most influential nature photographers in the world, Florian Ledoux, whose work is recognized by international conservation organisms, Hulia Boz, Aussie photographer who has recently held an exhibition in New York, Abstract Aerial Art, two brothers dedicated to taking bizarre aerial images around the world, Noura Al Murr Al Neyadi, who started photography at the age of 11, Costas Spathis, a Greek aerial photographer widely followed on Instagram as well as Elena Buenrostro, pilot, trainer and leader of the Women Who Drone movement.

TWO AWARDED PHOTOS DECODED The photographer Hua Shang (Aerial Photographer of the Year 2020, 2nd place - Nature) (portrait) who has two awarded photos (1,2) in the Wildlife category tells us about her shooting: “The photos were taken in Lake Natron and Lake Mecca in Kenya. When I was in the helicopter with the door removed, whether it was flying very low over the lake at a high speed, or flying straight down when there was only a seat belt between 60 degrees and 2,000 meters down, I felt that this was a straight aerial shot. I used a Nikon D850 for aerial photography. The lens was 70-200mm, and most of the focal segments were above 100mm. The main focal segment was 130-200mm to track and photograph the part of the pattern of flamingos floating salt over the lake. Of course I also use a short focal length of 70mm, but only if the flamingos are flying very high and close to the helicopter; On the other hand, the large amount of small salt-floating patterns in Lake Mecca made me use the local composition in the medium telephoto shoot. In this way, the flamingos still have clear details when magnified to 100%.”

SAME TREE, DIFFERENT DAY BY MICHAEL PACH On January 12th 2015, Mike Pach decided to photograph a hackberry tree in a park behind his home. Later that day, he came up with the idea to photograph the tree every day for a year and create a project called “Same Tree, Different Day.” The original goal was to make a unique photo of the same subject every day from the same perspective, but what started out as an exercise in creativity turned into a metaphor for life and a powerful lesson in mindfulness. Through this project,

Mike learned how to reach any goal he set for himself and how having something to look forward to every day helped him manage his mental health. “I had such a strong connection with my surroundings that I realized I was provided everything I needed to make a great photograph each day – all I had to do was simply show up and be patient,” says Mike.

A MODERN TRIBE OF ENGLAND For as long as I can remember, I have known about Morris dancers but I had never seen them until recently. Why is that? There are hundreds of Morris sides up and down the country. Practically every village, town and city has a side. They are quintessentially English. Yet mention ‘Morris dancer’ and what comes to most peoples’ minds are old men in costumes with bells dancing with hankies and sticks. Indeed, this was the extent of my knowledge until I stumbled upon a group of black-faced men in tatty, coloured coats, shouting and yelling to music! Suddenly, the word ‘Morris’ became a phenomenon that I felt compelled to investigate. Morris dancing appears to have origins in Medieval times and as such, little is written about it. The name ‘Morris’ may have its roots in the Spanish ‘Moorish’ (Henry II, 1494) but the earliest written record is in 1448, with the Goldsmiths Company

of London. It was not until the 1700s that any records of the dances started to appear. Morris sides or teams consist of a Squire who is in charge, a Foreman who teaches the dances, a Bagman responsible for the money, collections and finance and a Ragman who looks after the clothing and equipment. There may also be a ‘Fool’ whose role is to interact with the audience. S/He is usually the best dancer in the side in order to move through the dancers without bumping into them. Some sides may also have a mascot in the form of one of the side dressed as an animal. Face blacking can be traced back as far as 15th Century France where a young boy would dance in court after dinner dressed in leggings covered in bells. Another origin is the emulation of the Spanish Moorish dancers of the 18th Century who performed a mock

battle between Christians and Moors or Turks involving music, swords and handkerchiefs. Another origin is rooted in English law, that made begging illegal so the local boys would dance and black-up so as not to be recognized. Clearly, face-blacking has been part of Morris tradition for centuries in the same way as some African tribes have whitened their faces to perform particular dances and rituals. It therefore remains an anthropological phenomenon. The blacking of faces has come under heavy criticism in recent years following a complaint about a Border Morris side. The complaint was that the blacking-up of faces was racially harassing under the terms of the Equality Act 2010 and could result in a Civil claim. The person making this claim did not pursue it but it opened a nationwide debate. Morris sides were advised to decide for themselves what they wanted to do.

I spent two years in the company of Morris dancers and in particular, several Morris sides from Essex. During that time, I sought to document this very English phenomenon. I adopted an anthropological approach that was partially immersive in that I became a regular ‘fixture’ in the group and as such, was accepted and then allowed to get on with the job of documenting them. Although the dancing was one of the subjects to photograph, what I was really interested in were the people. What I quickly discovered was that the Morris stereotype that people have is far from accurate. They are a much more exciting, diverse, multi-faceted and highly charged group – far from stereotypical. Examination of the full series reveals that Morris as a well-rounded ‘Modern Tribe of England’.
