BEN THOUARD Credits Photographer Ben Thouard Athlete Ace Buchan The shot I‘ve dedicated the last few years to shooting underwater, looking for new angles and a new way to shoot surfing and waves. Shooting surfing from underwater is a whole new world and I love it! Tahiti has some of the clearest water in the world so it was easy for me to take advantage of it and explore it as much as I could.

Location Teahupo’o, Tahiti, French Polynesia

This photo was shot during a freesurf session right before the WCT event in Teahupo‘o. This is Ace Buchan kicking out from the barrel through the wave, a technique to escape a close-out wave.

Luckily I was right below, breathless with my waterhousing waiting for this moment and I was able to capture the whole sequence of it; this frame from the beginning of the sequence is the most powerful one because of the water around his face and body.

The shot We were a team of riders, photographers, and videographers, leaving for the very first trip of the new BMX clothing brand linked to the BMX: ‘Unicorn, we are legends’. We traveled for five days in the middle of Summer, through different spots in different cities; it was a buddies‘ trip with a business goal. This photo was taken at the bowl of Fillinges. I remember the heat was insane like it rarely had been in the Alps. When I arrived on the spot the first thought I had in mind was to make a top-shot video with the drone: a fixed plan with a rider who makes his line with the intention of creating a loop. Then I realized that the bowl was really clean: no tags, no dust. I was able to have the rider and his shadow come out well. I asked Alex Bibollet, one of the riders, to do what he did best, and I immortalized this moment!

The shot Last year‘s trend reports have shown that as soon as the first snow starts falling the social media community bursts in excitement and instantly shares videos and photos showing the first flakes of the year. I didn‘t want to miss out on the trend and started working on a concept to show the change of seasons. To attract the attention of the social media world it had to be something that would make one stop and stare. Consequently, I developed an idea of a series of three main pictures with some supporting detail shots, which had to be visually strong and inherent to the world of Red Bull. This picture with Pavel is one of those.

JEAN-BAPTISTE LIAUTARD The shot Two things that I love when it comes to photography are silhouettes and reflections and I wanted to use both in a single frame for a long time. After a lot of drawings, I knew what I wanted but it took me six months to get the perfect conditions and final ideas. Jeremy‘s trail is a piece of art and this jump is definitely a highlight. I knew I wanted to shoot it from the side and get that reflection but it was really dry at this time of the year and of course there was no water around. When I saw a wheelbarrow hanging around by the jumps, I had the idea to fill it up with water to create a mirror. We didn‘t have any water hose that day, so I had to do round trips with water cans to a little ditch by the road. After spending a lot of time adjusting the wheelbarrow and cleaning the water in the afternoon, my mirror was finally ready for the evening shoot. We were lucky enough to have a few friends helping us with the fire that night and adjusting the smoke just as we needed. The hardest job was Jeremy‘s as he had to ride the trail almost blind. Riding bikes at night is so scary and I can‘t thank the athletes enough when they are in these kinds of conditions. After a few attempts, we got this one, just as I imagined it at the very beginning, and it was a great feeling to finally see the image I had in my head for months, displayed on the back of my camera.

The shot Blaenau Ffestiniog was once described as the wettest place in Wales, this is no lie. Even when the sun shines, the puddles are plentiful. I’ve always been attracted to their animations when struck by a bicycle at full steep. The tyres of Katy Winton making the perfect parting of this muddy sea. The combination of dynamic action and the silk-like curtains made me try each time more determined. There are always challenges when shooting bikes and water close up … don’t get run over and don’t get wet. This concept had always been in the back of my mind but finding the perfect location and it aligning with both the weather and sufficient puddle depth was tough. This breathless day at Antur Stiniog with Katy proved ideal. You can never guess how water reacts when you hit it with force, sometimes the results exceed your expectations … this was one of those times.

ALEXANDER WICK Credits Photographer Alexander Wick Athlete Philipp Bankosegger, Chris Rudolph, Luke Lalor The shot Together with my boys Phil and Chris I went on a US West-Coast climbing trip. Obviously Yosemite is a must and so we tested our very humble European crack climbing skills right away on El Capitan‘s Salathé Wall. A climb I‘ve been dreaming of for quite a while. The first Ascent of this line was a master piece way ahead of its time. Climber and photographer Tom Frost was part of the three man team back then. His photography of the same climb is just breathtaking. The picture of Royal Robbins napping on a rock atop El Cap Spire with loads of exposure is one of my favorites, so of course I planned on getting a tribute shot to the old masters once we reached the spot. As we got stuck behind another climbing party just up on El Cap spire I used the moment, aided my way up the next pitch and took the shot as the boys and our new friend Luke actually took a nap. No old hemp ropes and linen haul bags like in 1961 but modern nylon and Dyneema this time. No uncharted terrain but a well known and established route. Having a rest amidst a sea of granite: probably almost as amazing as back in the days.

LORENZ HOLDER Credits Photographer Lorenz Holder Athlete Senad Grosic The shot The first time I saw this location was when I was watching Game of Thrones and I was blown away by the pure magic this road generated in me. First, I thought that it‘s of course a CGI composition, but after a little research I found out that this place is actually real and located in Northern Ireland. A year later I was actually standing there with Senad Grosic and trying to get a bunny-hop-tailwhip on camera. It was early in the morning with the first sun rays hitting the road and we managed to get a pretty cool shot, but somehow I knew that there was pure potential in the spot. So, we decided to stay a couple days longer and waited for some kind of rain, fog or other particles in the air, so I could use one flash from behind and create a white background to make Senad stand out a bit more and get the focus a bit more on the action. The rain came on our last day and I still remember the goose-bumps I had when I saw the image appearing on the screen of the camera. That‘s when I felt the same magical feeling I got when I watched Game of Thrones for the first time.

LORENZ HOLDER Credits Photographer Lorenz Holder Athlete Vladic Scholz The shot The Ouse Valley Viaduct is pretty cool old railway bridge in the South of England. When you approach it from the side, you can‘t really see the secret this bridge has to offer, but once you get underneath of one of the arches you can‘t believe your eyes. You are caught in a place that could easily be in the movie Inception. The arches create a very surreal visual effect – when you are taking a picture, you don‘t understand if you are looking down into something or at least you get very confused about what you‘re actually seeing. I was blown away by this fact, but also blown away that this looked like a pretty good spot for skateboarding. When I showed Vladic an image of the viaduct, he was on fire to try it out. To be honest it was super hard to ride and Vladic‘s quote that got stuck in my mind was: “This is so hard, when my brain is going down in the transition, my body is already going up again – this will be difficult to get something done here.“ A couple of hours later, when his brain and body came together, he landed this kickflip while the sun was just at the perfect angle as well.

After weeks of preparation and creative conception, I loaded my Subaru and headed north to Wyoming for the Total Solar Eclipse in August of 2017. Arriving a couple days before the eclipse, I linked up with athletes Chris Brule, Evan Grott, and Blake Sommer. The imagery goal was to capture the Eclipse and showcase mountain biking utilizing an in-camera double exposure – a very complex process.

Location Teton Valley, WY, United States

The morning of, we loaded our packs well before sunrise with light stands, powerful flashes, extra camera gear, and two magnum bottles of champagne to celebrate. After capturing the first image successfully during two minutes of totality, all we had to do was endure the midday sun, waiting for twilight and the attempt at the second frame. Unfortunately, I was unaware I had damaged the hot shoe connection on my camera four weeks prior while shooting fly fishing, preventing me from triggering my flashes. Our only option required athlete Chris Brule to hit the feature in near darkness at 9pm, allowing me to set the camera to a 2.5 second exposure, manually firing the flashes and freezing Chris midair. Nearly escaping complete failure, we hiked out in darkness while sipping on champagne, truly in awe of the total solar eclipse and thankful we were able to capture something special.

The shot Together with the Red Bull Skydive Team, I did this crazy Project called “Megaswing“ back in 2016. After my assignment I already knew this had to be a tricky one: Two Hot Air Balloons, one with a long rope attached and the other one to jump out with the swing, and of course the Skydiver with his parachute. After the first couple of jumps I realized that I wouldn’t get the perfect shot by simply shooting from the inside of the basket they where jumping out of. Lucky me, I had my monopod in the car as well as a pair of radio-triggers. My solution to get the right angle was to hold the camera, that I had attached to my monopod, as deep under the basket and just hope to get the perfect framing. Another thing, I asked the athlete Marco Fürst to turn a little bit towards my direction to avoid getting an ass-shot and to get this playful mood in the image. In the end it was the very last try which gave us the moneyshot.

The shot We traveled to Folgefonna, Norway for some summer snowboarding, which is kind of a tradition for many of us. That summer it was raining a lot. We were there for seven days and it rained for five days straight, so we basically only had the last two days to shoot anything and just one day to make this jump session happen. This shot was taken during a short one or two minute window when some light finally broke through the clouds. It was around 11:30pm which is sunset time at this time of year in Norway, so I set up a flash behind the jump to make the rider really pop. Orange and pink skies are pretty typical when shooting at this location, so in the end I was pretty excited to get more of a unique look with the dark clouds in the background. I’m thankful for the stormy weather, and to the guys for still wanting to hit the jump!

HAMISH FROST Credits Photographer Hamish Frost Athlete Guy Robertson & Greg Boswell The shot Guy and Greg had invited me along to get some photos of them trying a new winter route on Bidean nam Bian. They’d been casually vague about their objectives for the day – ‘we’ve got some unfinished business on Bidean nam Bian, get to the car park at 5.30am!’. It’s nice to be able to do a bit of planning before photographing a climb, however I also enjoy the challenge of having to improvise on the hill. Reaching the foot of the imposing Church Door Buttress just before first light, their ‘unfinished business’ became apparent. The summer line ‘Lost Arrow Direct’ – an impossibly steep looking series of cracks and roofs leading up the cliff. The weather that day had been poor for photos, however I knew that if the clouds were to clear slightly, then the west face of Stob Coire nan Lochan might come into view in the background. I waited patiently for a few hours and sure enough, just as Guy was making good progress on the third pitch, the clouds broke momentarily and I was able to get the shot I’d hoped for. Four hours later, Guy completed a sequence of grade 10 moves (in the dark!) to pull through a final roof section and top out on the route.

The image was captured while I was filming a behind the scenes video of the project “Mountain Skiing“ last November. When I saw them with the suits, the light and rocks, I just took quick snapshots for my Instagram. The rock wasn’t looking that great and safe so the preparation took a little bit longer than expected. We had to multiply the anchor on each side to secure the line to the maximum. Down below, in the bay, we could see the sharks coming back and forth just as if they were waiting for one of us to fall in. Huge massive orange cliffs, deep blue water, sharks, turtles, the spot couldn’t be better. We didn’t think that the rain would show up right before sunset.

The shot The waters of Kastellorizo are the perfect playground for creative underwater photography and are a freedivers’ heaven with incredible crystal-clear visibility. The little known and less frequented island is Greece’s hidden gem where we could dive for hours without seeing another person. Ever since beginning underwater photography, I had a keen interest in using creative camera angles and simple compositional elements to make my subjects appear as if they are in another world. For this image, I wanted it to look as if my subject was being sucked through a portal and by using the light rays as direct side lighting it would give the scene direction. By swirling up the water to create small air bubbles, I aimed to create textures that accentuated movement and chaos which would have been difficult with only clear waters.

That day, one of my main objectives was to photograph “The Half Moon”, an iconic passage of the Kuffner. The curve of this snow ridge is perfect, offering an incredible line. The problem in this kind of situation, as often in mountaineering, is the lack of distance to photograph. When you are on a ridge you can only move forward or backward. It’s rarely possible to move away from one side to the other to have a broader view. That’s why I chose to make a panoramic view by assembling a dozen images. I also noticed that the snow had ice crystals on its surface, a chance to bring matter to the foreground. We could almost hear the crunching sound of the crampons…

The shot It was one of those rare days in the area around Munich when you actually can hit spots around your hometown because there is enough snow to ride. I was sitting back home with my friend Seppl Ramsbacher and we decided to check out the local gravel pit, where I‘ve shot some BMX in the summer before and where I knew we would get the permission to do stuff. We found this conveyor-band that looked perfect for a little 5-0. I really liked the lines that the whole image created and how Seppl just fitted in perfectly. Back home I played a little around with flipping an image without Seppl being in there, that I had taken during the session. Because the camera was on the tripod the two images matched perfectly. Now the conveyor-band creates a whole new scenery transforming Seppl‘s 5-0 into a whole new world.

PHILIP PLATZER The shot I took the photo for Red Bull during the V-Max Project at the Atacama Desert in Chile, in 2016. The highspeed mountainbiker Markus Stöckl tried to beat the world record in speed with a serial MTB – which was a success, he reached 167.6 km/h. After I did a few classic close-up shots and pans, I wanted to show the whole scenery in one shot. The problem was I could not go close enough to do it with a wide-angle lens and with a longer focal length I didn’t get the view in the frame. The solution was to do a panorama shot. After I found my position, I did multiple photos in portrait format on 35mm before Max did his run. When Max was riding I did the sequence of him with the same focal length and perspective. No tripod was required. To get the final result I had to do some extra work in photoshop: First of all I stitched the panorama, in the end it was made out of six single shots. After this I had to add the sequence, which was quite an issue because of the stitching. Everything was slightly distorted and it took some time to fit the 44 shots of Max back into the scenery.

ROBERT GARO Credits Photographer Robert Garo Athlete Milan Hruska The shot The place where the photo was taken is located just 50km from my hometown directly on a motorway. I‘m sure I drove past it a thousand times without noticing it. One day, there was a traffic jam on the highway. I could not see exactly what it was, but I decided to come back and take a closer look. It took me some time to get to it. Luckily, my location scouting was late in the evening that day and it was already dark. Without this coincidence, I would never have noticed that the railing is lit at night. However, the only angle at which the image could be created was not easily accessible, especially since the required exposure time was about two seconds. So, I mounted the camera on a tripod at about three to four meters high and triggered the camera remotely. To expose Milan in the right place, I triggered the two speedlights separately with a second remote control. Only a lighted billboard and a small gap in the railing disturbed the image structure. I fixed it in the post-production so that the picture is perfectly suitable for the category.

AUSTIN JAMES JACKSON Credits Photographer Austin James Jackson Athlete Dane Jackson The shot Living in Portland, Oregon, I’ve been lucky to be exposed to waterfalls all my life. I’ve grown up hiking the many trails in the Columbia River Gorge, so I know the area like my own backyard. It wasn’t until 2017 that I began getting into shooting action sports, like kayaking, in these amazing locations. I’d shot Dane Jackson on many other waterfalls in the area in 2017 and 2018, but the 2019 spring brought huge rains to the Pacific Northwest, meaning flows were in for kayaking. Dane messaged me about a week before, and we rallied all week, running multiple waterfalls a day. On this day in particular, it was stormy, and the water level was just right. Getting this shot was harder than expected. You can’t see the top of the falls, so you really have no idea when the kayaker is going to drop. With all of the spray from the waterfall, I had to keep wiping my lens, hoping that I wouldn’t miss the opportunity to hit this shot. Luckily, I timed things just right and walked away with this photo of Dane Jackson.

We had been shooting the whole week and managed to score some pretty fun waves, the conditions looked super small on the last day of our trip so I thought I‘d mess around with some slow shutters. I remember panning with Roro as she glided past me and could feel the click of the shutter in time with the pan/ movement of the water so I knew she would be in focus. Slow shutters have always fascinated me, growing up I always wanted to be a painter or a drawer, to be able to create something from nothing was something that interested me. I think slow shutter photography is as close as I‘ll get to creating something with a similar feel.

I jumped straight out of a plane from Vancouver the day before and drove a couple of hours to his house. I was so tired and running a bit out of ideas when an unexpected snow storm came in while we were shooting this feature on his home track. I remember running in every direction trying to figure out the shot I should do and the lighting needed, but I‘m glad I had time to set up everything before it stopped snowing. Amaury did two or three runs off this slippery log until we got the photo we wanted. Focusing wasn‘t easy as I was shooting wide open, but I wanted the background to be completely blurry. We arrived at the spot a few hours before sunset so that I could find my framing and where I wanted to be positioned, as well as so Matt could do a few practice runs on the wall tied into some ropes to make sure the grips were solid and he was confident for when the time came. When it was go time a big cloud bank rolled in over the ocean and blocked the sun making the scene dull and boring. But after some decision-making we decided to wait and see and luckily enough, a small hole appeared in the clouds for five minutes as he sent the climb. I was just losing my mind behind the camera as I watched him solo his short route as the beautiful orange sun lit up the smoke of the wild fire in the background and him hanging five off the small pinnacle of rock.

We were out on a client shoot when the boys spotted a line that dropped into a chute, they made their way over to hit it and as soon as the dust exploded as they dropped in, we knew we had a shot. We set up the shot to slap a turn at the bottom of the chute and capture the explosion of the dust backlit by the sun, however both riders gave it 150% to create maximum effect, and unfortunately neither was able to hold it together as they hit the turn with every ounce they could muster. I was sharing a van with another one of the event photographers and a handful of riders. We had been on the road for hours at this point and were halfway through the Lindis Valley, which is a mostly unpopulated area of almost nothing but tussock grass and minimalist beauty. The sun was getting low in the sky and the light was starting to look good, so the call was made to take a rest stop and make the most of the sunset. With the short window of light we had, the three riders hiked their bikes up the ridge while myself and the other photographer scoped our desired angles and the riders dropped in one by one. We had a few attempts at getting the shot, changing position and settings a couple of times before capturing this shot just as this ribbon of light was left, illuminating the ridge. Within seconds the sun dropped behind the hill, so we called it a day and carried on our journey.

ROBIN O’NEILL The shot Chris Rubens entrenches himself in a laneway of snow between bearded old-growth trees in the Pemberton backcountry, on what turned out to be one of the deepest days we’d ever experienced. After a prolific storm hit the area, when most others were headed to the ski hill, myself, Hoji, Abma and Rubens, got up at day break to sled up into the mountains. It was so deep that we parked our sleds and skinned our way up the canopy of trees. It was so quiet, huge flakes falling down on us, but the amp was palpable. The boys skied lap after lap, burying themselves, popping pillows and floating over snow. So deep, it felt like everything was in slow motion. Rubens found a deep laneway through the trees and we lined it up perfectly, snapping this shot as he popped into the frame and caught a breath before disappearing under the snow again into the next turn. By the time we returned back down to the sleds they were buried under the 50cm that had fallen throughout the day. We couldn’t wipe the smiles from our faces knowing we’d just experienced the deepest day of the season.

MAHALLIA BUDDS The shot Ten straight days of shooting mornings and evenings with Cole on the remote Philippine province of Camarines Sur had passed. Pushed to our limits, we had now come to find ourselves at a quite humid standstill. This is where our ability to produce fresh, creative content would really be tested. Cole approached me with the idea of a photograph from directly above. I would climb the cable’s main tower and reach an end distance of about 50 feet above water level. For this to work, the rider would need to edge in such a way that would counter-balance the off-set of the cable, as the carrier would be wrapping around the strongest point of pull on the system. I had my doubts.

EMIL SOLLIE The shot I wanted to shoot this picture for years. I hooked up with Mats GrimsÌth, who is used to shooting pictures of surfing by being in the water himself. He wanted to be the light assistant in the water with the flash. We went to Red Bull and told them about the idea. They were stoked and after months of planning we got the legend himself, Mick Fanning, to join us. We all went up north in Norway, to Lofoten in early November. After a couple of days and nights waiting for the lights to appear, around midnight on the third day the shoot was finally on. I rigged a camera on tripod facing the sky to be able to see if the northern lights appeared. We did an hour of northern lights watch each, during the night. Half asleep, Mick Fanning jumped in a wetsuit and ran into the water, screaming in excitement by all the stuff going on. There where so many elements that had to come together at the same time. Waves, northern lights, no clouds etc. Technically this is one of the hardest pictures I’ve captured. I would not have been able to do this without Mats assisting with the lights in the water. When I saw these umbrellas hanging above the street I just knew I wanted to shoot them... from above. I asked pro snowboarder Nils Arvidsson if he could throw some kick flips on his skateboard and he was pumped. As soon as I got up there with my drone and saw the shadows from the umbrellas I got so fired up, it looked sick! Due to bad weather we only had a few tries before the clouds rolled in and blocked the sun so we had to hurry up! The shot This shot was taken on a freedive training day during a break. We were alone in a small boat sheltered from the wind in a cave, just making a break to eat and rest. And suddenly a huge sailing ship appeared, it was very large, elegant and classic, it wasn’t a normal vessel.

Location Menorca, Mediterranean Sea, Spain

When finally the vessel anchored not far away from us, we decided to make an approach swimming with mask, snorkel and fins. And the surprise was that under the surface we found that the ship sported an impressive keel, something that immediately caught our attention, both for the beauty of its shape and for the imposing size.

The shot Lines and symmetrical structures have always fascinated me a lot in photography, especially when they are not only man-made and when mother nature also puts a little bit of her style in it. I knew that this location was exactly what I was looking for and when I saw the composition from above, felt straight away that I could shoot something cool here. The vertical lines that split the image, paired with the crystal-clear water, the slight color-gradient and of course Anne‘s perfect style made this image very special for me. The cool thing, when you‘re shooting from above, is that things get a totally different look and you see elements that you don‘t see from the eye level view. The shot Freediving is a sport where you dive as deep as you can, for as long as you can on a single breath of air. Athletes push themselves far beyond what is considered normal, some diving to depths over 100m, and breath-holding for over 10 minutes. One of the most common causes of death in freediving comes from shallow water blackouts, which are usually only fatal when one is diving alone. Here you see Shuyi Chua, a Singaporean freediver coming up from a FIM (Free Immersion) dive while being escorted by four other safety divers who meets her half way up the ascent. While the world below is quiet, dark, and peaceful, the world above is loud, bright, and busy. After spending minutes alone in what used to be private and confined, the freediver is now awakened by the familiar sight of people, sounds and other sensations of life as she ascends towards the surface above. This is the time of year where 99% of Swedes are hibernating indoors. But not this guy. And I guess not me either. A chance meeting, this was an incredible sight in the snow. I was on a frosty stroll with a mate from New Zealand who had also recently moved to Stockholm. We were in one of the forests near the city and were both so stoked about taking photos in a place that looked so different from our home countries. So there we were, just walking along, when from around the bend emerged this man’s lemon kayak. Slicing the river, the water opened like curtains around him. I found a bench nearby and sent up the drone, praying that its little mechanical heart would hold up in the cold. Fingers numb, I flew frantically - searching for an interesting composition. Where had this guy come from? Where was he going? And what on earth was he doing out in this weather! The colours of the scene drew so much attention to the kayaker, so I wanted to capture and focus on the starkness and scale of the environment. All the while reinforcing that this was no summer paddle.

ROBIN PEARSON Credits Photographer Robin Pearson Athlete Anthony Pearson The shot Civil engineering projects sometimes produce huge concrete transitions like this, especially in reservoir overflow channels. Anthony Pearson’s obsession with spot searching has led him to ride some of the UK’s best offerings. Buoyed by his successful efforts at home, he was desperate to join me on this mission in Portugal. It’s an underground tunnel that takes excess water from a reservoir to the next valley, and access isn’t easy. In fact, it’s rather dangerous and probably not legal. To get there, there’s a short hike followed by a steep drop. Abseiling with bikes and camera bags is always going to be tricky, but thanks to our friends João and Bruno Soares coming properly prepared, we handled it. Down there, staring at the mouth of the pipe and grasping the scale of the transition, we knew we were in for a fun afternoon of bike riding. At that time, a flock of pigeons were on the projections of this structure and I wanted to make them participants and protagonists of the photography since I considered that they would give a concept linked to the history of this athlete who found in the dance the way to get ahead and turn his life around. So, I told Babel, ”Do your best step in front of the door!” At that moment, the pigeons took flight as if they were part of a great break dance show, giving wings to the moment and allowing this photograph to freeze in time as a latent memory. ANDRIUS ALEKSANDRAVIČIUS Credits Photographer Andrius Aleksandravičius Athlete Unknown The shot This shot I called “Standing on the edge of the Baltic sea coast”. It was a very cold and windy winter day. I really enjoy visiting the sea during the off-season. The empty beach covered with snow, the sea is not frozen but looks like sorbet ice-cream. And the sound is magical. Lithuania has only 90km of the Baltic Sea coast.

Location Lithuania

This photo was taken in Smiltyne beach near Klaipeda, Lithuania. It‘s a unique part of my country – the Curonian Spit National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, curved sand-dune spit that separates the Curonian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea coast.

I thought this would look really good from a bird’s-eye perspective. I particularly like the contrast between white and brown, as well as the curves created by nature. From the air it seems people are standing on the edge of the Baltic sea coast. It was very cold lying on the snow.

Location Swing Arm City, UT, Unites States The shot I captured this photo while on a summer moto photo road trip with Tom Parsons that took us through Colorado, Utah, and Nevada, USA in 2018. We stopped at Swing Arm City, Utah which is a unique landscape with some of the best off-road riding on Earth. At first glance, one might even think this was taken on another planet. With temperatures surpassing 100ºF (38ºC), it deterred others from riding. We had the entire area to ourselves. This incredible, natural rock formation is something out of a rider’s dream, or nightmare. Here Tom Parsons rides all the way to the top, where one wrong move means a long way down. This highlights only a small portion of the amazing terrain open to riding and camping.

The shot We woke up and the first thought that came to my mind was that this morning was going to be special. I always say that as it makes snoozing the early morning alarm way harder. Little did I know that the nature had already started working on its magic tricks. We arrived to the line surrounded by fog so thick that we could almost not see each other. An hour passed and we could only sense the sunrise that was supposed to make this morning so special. I thought, well not today mate, happened before, will happen again ‌ the world is not turning around your camera to make you happy every time you press the shutter. I was ready to bail when all of a sudden the fog dropped just a tiny bit down into the valley and showed us what was actually going on around us. This spectacular scenery lasted for about an hour before the clouds underneath us disappeared and the world turned normal again.

Location Tobermory, ON, Canada The shot The sun was setting on a crisp Saturday in March of 2018. The ice was slowly melting and spring was setting in. The surface ice was thin in some places, but there was also thicker ice that we were able to walk on. We cut a hole using an axe and dove down in the clear water. The shipwreck loomed underneath us and the evening sun created deep blue and purple hues in the water. The Alice G was a wooden tug boat that ran aground during a severe storm in November of 1927. I wanted to create an image that brought the viewer to a different time and place, allowing them space to wonder what they were seeing. Exploring a piece of history in these rare conditions was an experience I won’t soon forget.

The shot We were on a really remote island called Nosy Anakao, north west of Madagascar, with a crew of watermen. There were no waves this day, so we decided to explore the back side of this tiny island with a couple of kitesurfers and found this little playground with a bunch of dead trees floating around. I didn’t really realize it until Greta Thunberg did her speech at the UN, but this photo is very relevant to our current climate change situation. Here, you see a young man traveling to a poor and remote place to have fun around dead trees. I’m part of all this, of course, and I totally know it, so what could be the answer to this? People fought a lot in the past to get us the freedom we currently live in, but we certainly must also be concerned on how we shape our future. However it doesn’t mean we have to stop having fun. Paul Serin knows it and it’s exactly what he was doing there.

Location Sågmyra, Sweden The shot About a year ago I saw a clip of people skating in this huge abandoned factory. I was amazed by the light from the huge windows and I knew I had to go there and shoot. I called my friend and skateboarder Alfred Björebo to see if he was down, which he was. We spent about a day in this huge building, waiting for the sun to go lower to get that golden light. As the sun started to go down I got ahold of a ladder, so I could shoot from above. The light from the windows created these nice lines which moved through the image and created more depth. We just had a few minutes before the light disappeared and after a couple tries we got the shot. Stoked!

The shot Every February, you could even call it a tradition, Tomas and I book flight tickets from the frozen northern hemisphere to sunny Chile, where Tomas competes in one of the most spectacular urban downhill races in Valparaiso. There are not too many opportunities to train in the wintertime in Europe and that‘s why we always spend a couple of weeks before the race in the stunning bike park located in Nevados de Chillán. That‘s the dustiest place I have ever been to, and as all photographers know, the dust is the key to making the action even more powerful. Even the park itself offers many variations and sick spots for taking photos, so I can‘t imagine a better morning than waking up before the sun rises, hiking to the bike park before the lifts turn on and starting to capture the magic.

CHRISTIAN GISI The shot The Eiger – a mountain myth, a legend, a place of longing. Its North wall: one of the most famous faces in the world, certainly the most notorious in the Alps. Its ridge is an icon in itself and probably one of the most beautiful mountain tours on the planet. The photograph was taken during a photo shoot with the two athletes Caro North and Steph Davis on the famous Mittellegi ridge. An unusual rope team: Caro, a young German alpinist and prospective mountain guide; cheeky, unusual, full of ambitions. Steph Davis, the American Free Solo and Basejump icon; truly fascinating, experienced and far beyond any norms. The two form the front team. They were accompanied by cameraman Thomas Senf and the mountain guide Juerg Ruf – the two can be recognized as the rear team. The weather and light situation was almost perfect this late afternoon; the already razor-sharp ridge gained even more drama due to the clouds in the South wall. To the right of the picture, the exit ice field dominates and thus the last meters of the North wall. In the background, the equally famous Schilthorn and its cable car can be spotted.

PABLO JIMÉNEZ The shot I was in northern Chile to shoot a surfing competition at the break of El Flopos in Arica. The waves are really good and heavy, so this contest in particular attracts surfers from all over the world and especially from South America. Arica is known for flocks of all kinds of sea birds cruising along the coast line, but the week of the event, this large group just stayed and hung around the contest site. During a perfect day of free surfs leading to the competition, Peruvian surfer Tomás Tudela was a total standout, catching a bunch of really good waves. For this image, I saw him paddling for a wave that was looking very promising, as soon as he took off I started shooting, I saw him pulling into a perfect barrel, speeding through the section and coming out full speed at the other end of the wave. He kept the momentum and very stylishly exited the wave. It all lined up perfectly. The birds, the claim, the posture, I’m glad I kept shooting. The barrel was good, this became my favorite moment of the sequence.

Location Montpellier, France The shot Movement happens daily, so does the freedom of motion. I wanted this photo to let people discover more about my discipline, Parkour. The feeling of total freedom can be achieved simply by using human power. I wanted to represent, in a simple way, a man in an urban center who, despite the codes and laws that are enforced, can escape in a single moment. Germain jumped many times till we got the perfect shot. Thankfully the sun was behind me during his jump, which meant there was a natural shadow on the wall to exaggerate and reinforce his leap over the void. I chose to put this photo in black and white to highlight the urban architecture, as well as to have a raw and simple rendering; as simple as the way we move.

Location Alexandra Falls, North West Territories, Canada The shot Upon arriving at Alexandra Falls it was clear that the waterfall had near perfect flows for a safe descent. That is when all the hours in a car zooms in and time starts to slow down for the athlete and me as a photographer. Game time, we have a meeting regarding safety procedures and speak as to how it‘s all going to go down. As this location is vast, we used radios to stay in contact. Shooting such an important once-off shot like this is daunting when trying to give a unique perspective. A lot of the time, when getting creative with aerial photography, it is easy to lose perspective or the scale of the feat. Here with Bren, I was able to keep scale while delivering a fresh perspective to a waterfall image.

MARCELO MARAGNI The shot This shot is the result of a project that went wrong. The idea was to shoot the athlete during the annular sun eclipse of February 2017. Unlike a total sun eclipse, there is no blackout with some residual light, but a ring in the sky on it’s apex. There were a lot of challenges to achieve the desired image: I had no idea how much light it would provide, once the sun would have around 90% of its surface covered. We put some continuous lights on the paramotor to light the paraglider, which gave no result at the end. The ring was too bright, as if no light had been blocked. The other thing was that it happened around 11am, and the sun was too high in the sky and therefore the athlete had to fly very high. The athlete had some difficulties to coordinate the flight and cross the sun at the right time. And at the end, the biggest issue: I don’t own a 500mm or 600mm lens, so I borrowed the lens, tele-converter and camera from three different friends; it was also the first time I was using this brand. The camera had an issue, which I found out later, in which it was resetting the configurations when I changed the battery. So, the camera changed from RAW to JPG and I only realized it after shooting. So I couldn’t bring back anything from the dark areas or minimize brightness from the sun on post-production.

I was fortunate to come across Camerapixo which enabled me to publish my work, meet (virtual) friends and share ideas and thoughts on photography. Every time one of my images is selected for publication in one of Camerapixo’s high quality magazines, I am truly over the moon. It feels wonderful to be part of a community containing these phenomonal photographers. I feel humble but take every opportunity to learn from others and develop my skills in order to achieve better results. Photography makes me want to learn every day and I found a great place to gain my knowledge but also to share the results. I thank all fellow photographers for inspiring me.

Jacek is a freelance photojournalist based in Poland specializing in covering sport, social, cultural events and reportage. He is also a Certified Photojournalist for Camerapixo International Photography Magazine and cooperates with one of the largest Polish photo agencies – Reporter. Member of National Press Photographers Association (NPPA). His works have been displayed at regular exhibitions organized by Krakowska Witryna Fotograficzna run by Krakow professional photojournalists and the Association of Polish Journalists, and they received special recognition at The 10 Years of KWF celebrations.

Kevin Holliday is an internationally recognized fine art black and white photographer residing in Charleston, South Carolina.

As a young teenager, I thought about taking pictures of birds in the meadow. It was harder as I thought. Later it also appeared that I had no patience for that. My area of focus shifted to travel photography in a general sense...

Along with being named the Professional Photographers of South Carolina ‘Photographer of the Year’ in 2017, he has received awards from such international organizations as the SeeMe Exposure Awards™, ND Awards™, and the esteemed IPA™ (International Photography Awards). His work has a primary focus on architecture, landscape, and long-exposure minimalism, where it is noted for its attention to simple elements, leading lines, and negative space.

These days my interest lies more with landscape photography, it gives me peace and relaxation, can be present for hours at a place to enjoy it. And that is how peace and enjoyment of what the earth has to offer you. Regardless of the weather and light, that is beyond your control, luckily. Not everything has to be planned in your life.
