Aeroporto Leonardo Da Vinci di Fiumicino
An airport is a place between earth and sky, reality and imaginary. You travel first with your mind than your body. The airport of Rome Fiumicino, Leonardo da Vinci, is wide and articulate, like modern European airports, it spreads in a maze of escalators, treadmills, shuttles, long corridors and squares. Light shape interiors giving it a space station atmosphere, from soft and bright areas to dark and lonely places, a sort of space junction for distant destinations. The scifi sensation rises with dim lights corridors and muffled noises, interrupted only by the occasional crowd of travelers, that swarm between destinations. Most travelers walk in silence, with a small or large baggage, they don’t see you, they are looking around for numbers, time, places to reach flights to catch. Others people sleep or eat, regardless to the time of the day. A timeless sensation, a virtual place that does not belong to anyone, where you are only a passer by. And yet, at the Leonardo da Vinci airport, work more than a thousand people, visible or not, from security to many services, they are there. The largest Italian airport, has a considerable number of passengers per year, equal to the inhabitants of a European country, an enormous hive, a gigantic gig-puzzle, alive and in constant change.
AIRPORT IN NUMBERS
An airport in the early hours of the day, is silence and desert but all change, in a couple of hours it will transform into an anthill of people, running in all direction, a stream, broken by the colored uniforms of the flight personnel and assistance.
126 sales outlets
The Leonardo da Vinci airport, is run by ADR, Aeroporti Di Roma, that have to manage all these daily tasks, including events, inaugurations, happenings of all sorts, in a very complex environment. It has proved to be one of the best European airports, in term of services and satisfactions. A big change is in the air, an ambitious project is expecting to complete in the next years, it will transform the airport into a technological center, integrating business to traveling needs, shaping the landscape with a modern and sustainable architecture. A technological satellite is coming to Fiumicino and I will be there for the landing.
