PREFACE
Throughout my studies I have found that the most endearing works of architecture are those that are truly concious of their wider context. For a building to be effective critical analysis of culture, climate and environment needs to be at the core of its conceptual framework. Most recently I have been interested in the potential adoption of life sciences vocabulary into architecture and how this can be applied to the improvement of sustainable design practices. This has led my latest architectural endeavors to focus on the use of biomimetics and computer simulation. This portfolio is a showcase of the projects that I feel best describe my approach to architectural design. I have also included some examples of work I have completed in my personal time as well as during the brief period when I worked as a freelance industrial designer.

STUDENT WORK :
FREMANTLE FIRE BRIGADE
STATION 02 A
3RD YEAR, SPRING 2008, 12 WEEKS UNIT CO-ORDINATOR : CHARLES MANN
city of ten people...
A firestation is unique in its operation as a public building as it serves the role of home as well as being a place of work for its inhabitants. The design of station 02 aims to achieve a balance between the rigorous functional needs of a public building and the desire to provide a civilised living environment for the four platoons that would live there. The station would serve as an important ordering device within the space of the city and as such should represent a strong sense of purpose and belonging to the wider urban fabric. Station 02 aims to achieve this by drawing inspiration from its immediate context not only in a formalistic sense but also in its construction and materiality. By recycling building material from the adjacent derelict woolstores and also from used shipping containers.

MARGARET RIVER
READING ROOM
4TH YEAR, SPRING 2010, 5 WEEKS UNIT CO-ORDINATOR : ANDREA QUAGLIOLA
This unit was split into two seperate design assignments; one was the investigation of a building by a well known architect and the other was for the design of a small reading room influenced by that research. For the first project I looked at the architecture of Louis Kahn. Specifically the Fisher House and the Esherick House. In my analysis I paid specific attention to Kahn’s ideas of “Form and Order” and “Silence and Light” In the planning and construction of his buildings. For the design of the reading room, Kahn’s method of geometrically ordering plans and elevations allowed the space to function effectively as a reading room while the elevated and louvred windows were designed to allow sunlight to reflect off the masonry walls creating an adjustable diffuse light that allows the space to remain private while maintaining an adequate amount of reading light.

SWAN RIVER
COMMUNITY CENTRE
4TH YEAR, SPRING 2010, 12 WEEKS UNIT CO-ORDINATOR : ANDREW LILLEYMAN
The design for the Island Community Centre responds to the Swan River as if it were a living organism, emphasising the need for a symbiotic co-existence between the urban environment and the river ecosystem. The growth patterns of algae and seaweed were been chosen as the conceptual framework of the design development process. Although algae could be seen to have negative effects on the Swan River Ecosystem when in large concentrations, in a healthy river system algae plays a vital role in the life of the river. More importantly, algae and seaweed have a number of properties that can be applied to structural and formal generation. Algae can also literally be integrated into the building framework as a generator of ethanol and biofuel to aid in reducing the building’s energy consumption. In order to generate a functional building based on the growth of algae cells, a number of different scripts needed to be used to conceptualise various parts of the design. The propagation of the building cells is determined through a Voronoi mapping of the masterplan using an array of point data taken from the urban model. This 2D map was used to determine the footprint of the island.

The island footprint was then put through the three dimensional Voronoi script to generate a number of permutations of cells that are then chiseled away to reveal a final building form. The cellular division of the facade volumes was determined using a script designed to map algae growth patterns in two dimensions. This program was also used to determine the arrangement of panels and the placement of glazing on the surface.

PROFESSIONAL WORK :
FREELANCE
3D IMAGING
Employer - Global Visioneering Pty Ltd Spring 2009 - Winter 2010
After completing my bachelors degree in 2008 I took a break year to work and to travel to Europe. During this time I managed to get full time work as a contractor for a small industrial design firm. The work I was involved with was predominantly for the mining sector developing promotional material for a number of different projects. My responsibilities in the firm were the creation of 3D assets, animation and video production. The experience I gained while working has been invaluable. I have used the opportunity to advance my skills in a number of different software packages which has improved my presentation skills and my efficiency within a production pipeline. The following images are examples of objects I have modelled while working. Most of these examples were created with only a couple of reference photos to work from.
