1. CONNECT
MEANINGFUL ENGAGEMENT WITH THE SENTIENT CITY WILL REQUIRE PHYSICAL PARTICIPATION FROM THE INDIVIDUAL WITHIN THE PUBLIC DOMAIN. OPERATING WITHIN “HERTZIAN SPACE” (THE INTANGIBLE FIELD OF DATA THAT FLOWS THROUGHOUT THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT); HYPER-SPATIAL, VIRTUAL AND ARCHITECTURAL ARMATURES WILL ENABLE AN EXTENSION OF HUMAN SENSES BEYOND THEIR BIOLOGICAL CONSTRAINTS. AUGMENTATION OF THE INDIVIDUAL’S PERCEPTION WILL REVOLUTIONISE THE COGNITIVE EXPERIENCE OF THE URBAN FABRIC AND PROVIDE A FRAMEWORK FOR THE EMERGENCE OF NEW METHODS OF INTERACTION WITHIN PUBLIC SPACE. THE TECHNOLOGY THAT WILL ENABLE CONNECTION WITH THE AUGMENTED SPACE CAN BE SITED ON THE BODY, AND ALSO WITHIN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT, ALLOWING ANYONE TO INTERACT.

‘WHEN IT IS RAINING IN OXFORD STREET THE ARCHITECTURE IS NO MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE RAIN, IN FACT THE WEATHER HAS PROBABLY MORE TO DO WITH THE PULSATION OF THE LIVING CITY AT THAT GIVEN MOMENT.’ (PETER COOK 1963)

INTERFACING WITH THE TECHNOLOGY OF THE SENTIENT CITY WILL ALLOW USERS TO BECOME MORE AWARE OF THEIR IMMEDIATE CONTEXT. DUE TO THE ACCESSIBILITY OF CONTEXTUAL INFORMATION THROUGH THE ARCHITECTURAL SURFACES (THE LIVING WALL AND CENTRAL SCREEN), AND WITH THE ABILITY TO ACCESS DATA THROUGH A CITY INTRANET, USERS WILL BE PERCEIVE THEIR ENVIRONMENT THROUGH AUGMENTED SENSES. THIS WILL CREATE A NEW EXPERIENCE OF URBAN SPACE WHERE USERS CAN BE PHYSICALLY LOCATED ON SITE WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY BEING ABLE TO CONNECT WITH OTHER PLACES.

D.I.Y URBANISM 3
THE SENTIENT CITY WILL PROVIDE A PLATFORM FOR THE COMMUNITY TO BE ABLE TO CURATE THE URBAN CONTEXT. THIS WILL BE POSSIBLE BOTH IN A PHYSICAL AND VIRTUAL SENSE; - INFORMATION SUCH AS WEATHER DATA, AMOUNT OF PEOPLE USING THE SPACE, AND METADATA GATHERED FROM SOCIAL NETWORKS CAN BE GATHERED BY THE SENTIENT ARCHITECTURE OF THE SQUARE. THIS WILL ENABLE THE PLANNING OF ‘POP-UP’ FUNCTIONS TO BECOME MORE OPPORTUNISTIC AND EFFECTIVE. - THE SOFTWARE OF THE SENTIENT SYSTEMS WILL BE OPEN SOURCE ENCOURAGING IMPROVEMENT AND ALTERATION OF THE SYSTEMS THAT MODERATE THE SPACE. OVER TIME THIS WILL ALLOW THE FUNCTION OF THE SQUARE TO EVOLVE WITH CHANGING CULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY. THIS WILL ALSO ENCOURAGE A NEW GENERATION OF URBAN HACKERS TO BECOME PATRONS OF THE CITY. - GENERAL USERS WILL BE ABLE TO OFFLOAD INFORMATION INTO THE URBAN FABRIC. THIS WILL CREATE A NEW MEANS OF INTERACTING WITHIN THE CITY; VIRTUAL EXHBITIONS, POLITICAL PROTESTS, ARCHIVING OF DIGITAL INFORMATION IN THE SPACE, DEBATE AND DISCUSSION, SHARING AND TRADING OF INFORMATION WILL ALL BE POSSIBLE WITHIN THE AUGMENTED URBAN FORUM.

AUGMENTED REALITY APPLICATIONS WILL ALLOW BUILDING PROGRAMMES TO EXPAND OUT INTO THE PUBLIC DOMAIN. FOR INSTANCE; LIBRARY RESOURCES COULD BECOME ACCESSIBLE WITHIN THE URBAN SQUARE GREATLY INCREASING THE USE OF THE OUTDOOR SPACES. APPLICATIONS RUNNING ON MOBILE DEVICES WILL ALLOW ACCESS VISUALISATION OF ARTWORK OR EXHBITIONS IN AUGMENTED SPACE AND COULD ALSO ENABLE PEOPLE TO PLAY AUGMENTED REALITY SPORTS WITHIN THE SQUARE.

// if, in phenomenological terms, space could be considered an environment that is activated through the perception of its subjects, then the use of technology to stimulate the senses would theoretically heighten this effect: it would awaken the body and catalyse new modes of inhabitation.

CLIMBER RIGS THE CLIMBING ROBOTS SERVE AS THE CYBERNETIC HARDWARE OF THE PUBLIC SQUARE. THEY CONSIST OF A CENTRAL CHASSIS AND THREE ROBOTIC ARMS. THE CHASSIS CONTAINS A SET OF PULLEY WHEELS THAT GRIP THE TOWER, ALLOWING THE RIG TO MOVE UP AND DOWN FREELY. THE CHASSIS ALSO HOUSES ALL OF THE COMPUTER HARDWARE TO RECORD, PROCESS AND TRANSMIT DATA AS WELL AS THE CORE MECHANICAL COMPONENTS. THE ROBOTIC ARMS CAN BE MODIFIED WITH A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT ATTACHMENTS SUCH AS CAMERAS, RANGE FINDERS, WEATHER PROBES, ROBOTIC GRIPPERS OR ATTACHMENT HOOKS. THE ARMS CAN ALSO DEPLOY DOWNWARDS AT GROUND LEVEL TO FORM STRUCTURES THAT CAN BE INHABITED WITH A RANGE OF DIFFERENT PROGRAMMES.
