WARPED BLUR HKU

In this one-year studio, the frst semester was dedicated to producing models with unusual materials: glycerin, soap, wax and resin led me to explore light, transparency and translucency as spaces qualities.

Adding a geographical context, in Admiralty, Hong Kong, I adapted the concepts previously obtained through my models, with a use of a patterned glass doubledglazed facade, avoiding vis-à-vis, refecting the lights of the HK Lightshow, and thus creating different spaces conditions inside and outside.

«Model-making and experimentation as a way of thinking new spatials conditions».

One-month research project in partnership with the Chinese Academy of Arts in Hangzhou. Study following the research work made by CAA’s students on several villages in the Min Jiang’s valley, in Fujian. The aim was understanding in depth the structural principles of vernacular architecture in Jiulong.

JIULONG’S HOUSES ENSAPM

& CAA 2020

3D model of the traditional vernacular house of Jiulong. Composed of a load-bearing wooden structure and exterior adobe walls, it admits several wings distributed around a central atrium.

The houses are built on two levels. Sleeping rooms are located on the upper level, to beneft from the heat generated from the kitchen’s open-fre. Bathrooms are originally not included in the house, but water facilities are located in the rear rooms of the kitchen. Nowadays, new bathrooms blocks are installated as small independant constructions added to one side of the house.

8 9

But nowadays, the Jiulongcun’s villages are only inhabited by 2 generations; the elders and the children. Meanwhile working possibilities are way more important in big cities, villages and houses are emptying, leading to inevitable alterations of the building.

The original structure allows up to 4 generations to use the space simultaneously.

But these inevitable alterations can be seen as opportunities to create new forms of sociability...

So why not deconstructing how we live in these villages? Why not using alterations as opportunities to open up the space, and reconsidering social and private spheres another way?

By breaking down the line between public and private, Jiulongcun’s houses could open up to new spaces and form of socialbilities.

10 11

Nong Jia Le (农家乐) translates to Happy Farmer Home. This project is the continuation of the study of Jiulong’s houses, proposing a new approach to revitalizing these villages through a green and local tourism.

NONG JIA LE

In the village of Jiulong, tourism evolving around the region’s craftmanship is emerging. 3 sites are selected to create a touristical journey through different themes: wood-work (site A), farming (site B) and culture (site C). All 3 sites propose accomodation and common spaces for locals to gather with travellers.

The different spaces ft into the natural topography of the very uneven terrain of the village’s hills. The architecturaly detailed site corresponds to the one highlighting farming and other agricultural activities. The common house is located upstream of the newly created communal road, meanwhile the housing complexes are distributed by type of housing right below the road, thus taking advantage of the unobstructed view of the heights of the village, while being easily accessible by transport.

14 15

The common house (left of the illustration) allows travelers and farmers to share everyday activities, such as cooking, eating and gathering. Together, they can chill after a day of labor or sort, wash and cook local products. The original system of convex sloping roofs allows collecting and treating rainwaters in an atrium. When the water overfows, crops downstream are thus watered.

16 17

From bunk-bed rooms to more spacious ones, Nong Jia Le offers several accomodation possibilities, for different types of travellers and for various staying times.

Typologies are modular to allow maximum adaptability. For instance, by opening the curtain walls, a single-room can be extended to create familyfriendly housing.

The deep study of the Tronçais forest led us to believe that in an hypothetic world, the tree would be at the center of urban planning in rural but also urban areas. The following cross-section represents all the rules we set to allow the tree to fully develop, as sacred as a human being.

WHERE THE MOUNTAINS MEET

How can we imagine the future of ski resorts?

Tired of the «all-snow» model, which is no longer valid considering the climate change, tourists prefer a more intimate, more confdential mountain.

In 2020, two ski resorts in Savoie are preparing their connection at the top of the mountain, in order to save their ski areas at all costs ... But what cost? How can we help them?

The travel diary mixing fction and reality was the best way to dive deeply into the study site, analyze its issues and problems.

All illustrations were made on site, and the fctional story is inspired by real events and testimonies.

The study of the site and the realization of the logbook makes it possible to understand the great importance of the more personal, sporting use of the mountain site. Tangible and intangible heritage play an important role in the identity of Albiez and the Karellis.

THE IRON AND THE EARTH ENSAPM

2022

In 2018, foods carried away a piece of rails from the TER line which connected Morlaix to Roscoff, (Finistère). Impracticable, it is condemned to being shut down. This railway line, built in 1883, was the SNCF’s most proftable freight line in France, mainly for the transportation of onions, artichokes and caulifowers. However, it suffered road competition in the 1980s, reducing the line to nothing.

Infrastructure obsolescence, the rise of road freight, the policy of closing small lines... the reasons for its closure are numerous. However, at the time of COP26, Brexit, the expansion of the RTE-T, the situation may change for the future of the Morlaix - Roscoff line.

How did a railway infrastructure, once so important for the development of this agricultural region, become obsolete? If the train returns, to what extent could this infrastructure be the vector of a local economy and ecology?

Graduation project, creation of a passenger and a freight train station + research laboratories in Saint-Pol de Léon (Brittany). Comic strip, leafets, architectural drawings and models.

Modules housing the various programs (passenger station, information area, café, exhibition area, ofces and research laboratories) are inserted under the hall. The latter being raised from the ground by a pilar system, raw earth constructions are protected from the rising waters (capillarity). The wall rises and ends in a railing, protecting the users of the rooftop slab.

To allow maximum modularity and possible renovations, the raw earth modules are built on site. The material (greyish earth) be found locally, reused or returned to the earth. An instruction allows every owner to know how to build, deconstruct, use and reuse these fuid spaces.

LIVING IN AN ORCHAD

Project in the sketch phase for a 2-hectare plot in Troyes, France. In order to sell the plot, the clients wanted to have an overview of several development options for collective and individual housing. Differents layout options of different densities are offered through plans, sections, housing typologies and ambient views.

for Thierry Melot 2021-2022

IFADUR
40 41

The densest option, offering individual housing at the edge of the plot, as well as collective housing in blocks. The car parks (ground foor) is a vegetal roof allowing plants and trees to grow, thus composing the centrak orchad, toward which every housing is turned.

42 43

This slightly less dense option allows a passage in the center of the plot, at the level of the ground foor. This planted passage is pedestrian, allowing to walk around the orchard.

44 45

This option creates individual houses (edges) and strip-housing (center), all facing the central orchard and the new circular street. Shops or disabledfriendly apartments are located on the ground foor, facing the street, adding a new neighborhood life. The roof of the car park is the base ground of the orchard, accessible by stairs and ramps located in-between the buildings.
