Letter from the Editor With summer right here, many of you are starting to think up some fitness resolutions for the coming months. 1. Keep it Real Make goals that are realistic and achievable. If you aim too high and don't achieve them, the chances of you sticking in there are next to none. 2. Make it a Habit Health and wellbeing are a lifestyle, so make sure you make goals that could easily become a habit for you rather than a chore. It takes 10 days to make a habit, so give yourself two weeks to get into a routine of incorporating better eating and more fitness into your day. Plus, don’t forget your rest days! 3. Get the Right Focus Instead of focusing on your size or what the scales say, shift your attention to the work and action required rather than the results. For example, make yourself a goal of doing 4 workouts a week, rather than weighing a certain number by a particular date. 4. Make it Fun Doing a workout shouldn›t be like doing the dishes; you should want to go not just because you feel good afterwards but also because you enjoy it! Listen to your body, and remember there are fun ways to keep moving like Zumba in the circuit 5. Get a Support Team Get a team or workout buddy! Not only will this help your motivation, it also makes you accountable. STRESS AND FLAT STOMACH!! Stress causes the secretion of a hormone “Cortisol”. This hormone increases the appetite and enlarges your waist line. To avoid the damages done, do as follow: - Drink 10 – 12 glasses of water - Eat slowly (Each meal should take at least 20 minutes) - Take 3 meals and 2 snacks (1 banana per day and 1 cup of fresh nuts twice a week)

- Consume more green vegetables - Replace white grains with whole wheat bread, brown rice, brown pasta, etc. - Consume 3 times fish and shellfish per week - Decrease the consumption of fast and fried foods - Limit your salt and sugar intake - No more than 2 – 3 cups of coffee/tea per day - Drink herbal tea (anis, peppermint, chamomile, etc.) - Sleep 7 – 8 hours (preferable between 10 pm and 6 am) - Practice your favorite activity (dance, swimming, jogging, etc.)

PILATES FOR BACK PAIN Back pain is extremely common. It is estimated that 85% of the population will experience back pain at some point in their lives. Those most at risk of developing back pain are people who are overweight or inactive; who spend a lot of time sitting at work; or whose jobs require them to lift, twist and bend. Stress and smoking also place people at risk of developing back pain. People with conditions such as arthritis, scoliosis, and cancer are more likely to experience back pain. Back pain becomes more common as people get older, with the first episode occurring most commonly around 30 to 40 years of age. Pilates is a particularly good exercise for many people with back pain as it is designed to strengthen the deep abdominal and pelvic floor muscles, which provide support to the back.
