highway park The Hague

Facing an increasing population but a lack of avalaible space, The Hague must rely on the redefinition of areas within its borders to ensure its development, such as the Prins Clausplein. This highway interchange consists of a superstructure with a strong influence on local as well as regional scales. However, it is a source of spatial division and seems to appear as a space of constraints. Nevertheless, it also enables the installation of structures which would not find their place in city centres. This urban cathedral is a structural and sculptural object. It is the medium of an urban imagination.

ENSA Versailles Graduation project Programme Under supervision of Team

2016 - 2017 Urban planning Jean Bocabeille Lucie Ou-meskour (ENSA Versailles)

This project proposes to recreate links between the separated parts of the city and generates a new centrality of public leisure activities: the urban park. The idea is to offer a place which is simply no longer an imitation of nature. A park must so be a celebration of urbanity and become a laboratory of urban activities. Programmes are operating day and night, allowing for a permanent and safe occupation of the site. The park is divided into four areas, each revolving around one singular structural element which defines its atmosphere: District Tower dedicated to contemplation and neighbourhood life, Urban Jungle for sport and movement, Fun Field for leisure and relaxation, Highway Palace as a temple for urban culture. Highway Park is an urban utopia. 8

Wood Market Stockholm

This proposal for a Stockholm Workshop Centre is conceived as a market place. It forms a new social and cultural hub in the city for people to meet, trade, exhibit and exchange. It is an open gathering space. All activities take place under one big roof, supported by a singular forest of wooden columns and a refined network of wooden beams. A transparent facade is draped around the structure, expressing the open character of the project.

Responding to its direct surroundings, the building's triangular volume is intersected by 3 galleries. They strategically offer a direct visual and physical continuity between the nearby streets and the waterfront. Those voids, around wich the different functions are organized, are revealed by a variety of facade opacities. MEESVISSER received an honorable mention for this proposal.

Under supervision, I realized different graphical documents and impressions for the final presentation. I was involved in the design of this project and the development of various ideas. 14

Sports Centre Berlin

Marzahn-Hellersdorf, on the outskirts of Berlin, is a neighbourhood characterised by wide streets, derelict lands and vast parking lots. Its infrastructure heavily favours the use of cars for transportation, rahter than promoting cycling, walking and the use of public transport.

Technische Universität Berlin Master project Programme Under supervision of Team

2014 - 2015 Sports facility Christine Nickl-Weller Laurens de Lange (TU Delft, Netherlands)

The project aims to intervene at a local scale by creating a network of routes dedicated to pedestrians and cyclists. It reconnects the different areas of the neighbourhood and generates a series of new spaces: parks, gathering and activity areas for the residents. A swimming pool combined with a multifunctional sports hall is positioned along the east-west axis. The building consists of two entities that are intersected. Each is distinguished by its specific programme with different uses, needs and materialities. The ground floor volume is defined as an open space, transparent in order to maintain a visual continuity with the outside. It houses the entrance hall with a cafeteria as well as the swimming pools. A sports hall and all the supporting functions —vertical circulation, locker rooms and showers— are located in the second volume, more private, closed and opaque. 16

STADTBAD FRANKFURT Frankfurt (Oder)

Located in the border town of Frankfurt an der Oder, the Lichtspieltheater der Jugend has experienced many changes before being transformed into a cinema after World War II. This typical GDR-style building was finally abandoned in the 2000s and is now a forgotten space, degraded and functionless.

Technische Universität Berlin Master project 2015 Programme Transformation Under supervision of Claus Steffan Team Manfred Eriksson (Lund Universitet, Sweden)

This transformation project aims to offer an innovative programme able to reconnect both the city and its inhabitants with their past, while also creating a new public space for all: an aquatic centre. In order to protect this architectural heritage, a lot of the original elements —galleries, front volume and façades— were preserved and reused. The main intervention consists of creating various extensions to house the different pools and relaxation areas as well as the technical and sanitary facilities. To contrast with the existing, these newly added elements present a different materiality and texture. The building, its programme and circulation are organised as a progressive system: from public to private, from transparent to opaque, from cold to warm temperature areas. 20

This project won the First Prize of its Studio (Fachgebiet Gebäudetechnik und Entwerfen - TU Berlin) and was displayed during an exhibition at the Kleist Forum Frankfurt (Oder) from November to December 2015. 21

république central Paris

République Central consists of a new train station, a new centrality and urban interface for Paris. Shaped after an interpretation of the existing underground networks and flows, this design meets three objectives, each defining three atmospheres:

ENSA Versailles Master project 2015 - 2016 Programme Public / Office Under supervision of Ido Avissar Team Rémi Boubonneux (ENSA Versailles)

- Mobility: the tower is a singular object that vertically connects all the traffic flows and where everything converges. It forms a Piranesian space where possibilities of movement are endless. - Profitability: a series of free open spaces provides an economic solution to this project's costs by adding profitable programme like shops and offices. - Activities: the Place de la République is only partially used despite its highly symbolic value. New public functions are created to diversify and densify this area such as a library or sports facilities. This emblematic square and its actual setup remain as unchanged as possible. République Central is a project focused on density and compactness. 24

Oostenburgerhof Amsterdam

The challenge in this competition was to accommodate two opposing target groups with different opinions on what defines quality of living: the elderly and the young. How to live apart together?

MEESVISSER Professional work Programme Status Client Architects Team

2019 Housing Prequalified competition Stadgenoot Marijn Mees, Uda Visser Boris Popma Andras Szel

One important part of the project is the inner court. It forms a high-quality collective area that offers a smooth spatial transition between the different private parts of the building complex. A lively plinth is created to activate the court by placing collective programmes on either side: a salon and studio. The building complex is divided in different volumes to contribute to the architectural diversity of the neighbourhood. Although appearing seperate, they remain spatially connected. Two entrances give access to the plot and extend into the collective spaces. They visually and physically connect the street and the court. Referring to the industrial past of Oostenburg, a simple material palette of metal, concrete and brick is chosen.

I participated in the design of this project from the very beginning. Under supervision, I realized various graphical documents as well as the editing of the exterior impressions for the final presentation. 28

Buiksloterham 04a Amsterdam

This project responds to the increasing demand for social housing. MEESVISSER was approached to design a building with a commercial plinth and 100 small apartments for starters on the housing market and holders of a refugee status.

The building on this plot marks the entrance to the new Buiksloterham area. In a reinterpretation of the building envelope provided by the municipality, a stepped volume was created. It rises to height levels at the corner of the site, allowing maximum sun exposure of the inner yard. This court forms the central hub of the project around which the apartments are organized. It offers a generous, green outdoor space for residents to meet and relax. A stepped setback in the exterior facade accentuates the main entrance to the building. It visually links the public street and the courtyard, exposing its soft inner world and counterbalancing the urban outer shell of the building.

I worked on the DO of this project for several months. Under supervision, I realized various graphical documents and helped produce constructive details. I participated in delivering the final set of documents as well as in making the scale model. 32

wisselspoor Utrecht

The Wisselspoor project consists in the transformation of a former railway service area in Utrecht. A masterplan designed by Studioninedots and Delva Landscape has been leading the path for this urban renewal. Based on the concept of the City Plot development strategy, the area will be tranformed into a new district with a lively mix of functions and typologies, taking its industrial heritage as the defining character for future developments.

MEESVISSER Professional work 2017-2019 Programme Housing Status Start construction 2020 Client Synchroon Architects Marijn Mees, Uda Visser Team Teresa Avella Boris Popma Andras Szel Kim Wandel

For this project, MEESVISSER designed 12 single family houses, a block with three large apartments and a building with 31 small studios. The masterplan defined a strict set of aesthetical rules for the buildings to guarantee an overall coherence of the area. Within this frame, several families of houses were designed, each fitting to the given rules in a singular manner. Every group is recognizable through its material: brick, concrete or wood. The houses are thus given a robust exterior character, contrasting with the light and spacious interiors.

During several months on this project, I helped in the design and development of the different buildings as well as in making the scale model. Under supervision, I was able to participate in the production of the final set of documents for the VO and the DO phase. 36

Living by the highway

This project is located on the edge of an imaginary city. Two typologies of building are coexisting:

ENSA Versailles Bachelor project Programme Under supervision of

- The two-storey building. This type of housing aims to create a "small village" atmosphere thanks to its relatively small dimensions. It is an oasis of calm right in the middle of a very dense urban area.

2014 - 2015 Housing Augustin Cornet Javier Arpa

- The block of flats. First this typology comes as a protection against the acoustic nuisances of the highway located on the edge of the site. Second, it offers with its belvedere an opportunity to highlight the mesmerising show of the unstoppable flow of cars. Focused on one part of the plot, the design consists of a stack of open free spaces in which closed and autonomous cubes are inserted. In each appartment, these cubes house the necessary facilities as well as the most private rooms: kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. These volumes are either used as structural elements or become removable modules. In the second case, the inhabitants obtain an important freedom in organising their living space. This also ensures the building keeps a maximum flexibility towards possible future transformations. 40

Based on the shape of the plot, the house presents an oval form. No doors were implemented in order to maintain maximum movement and transparency. Instead, a combination of curves defines and separates the house's differents parts.

2012 - 2013 Housing Pierre Devernois

Rooms revolve around a central patio which is located in the back of the plot, away from the nuisances of the street. This courtyard is facing south to guarantee a maximum amount of sunshine. 44

ENSA Versailles Bachelor project Programme Under supervision of

2012 Housing / Public / Retail Benjamin Drossart

Public functions are located on the ground floor: a cafĂŠ, a book shop and a small theater. These spaces are designed as transparently as possible to maintain a visual continuity with the street and the neaby park. Six apartments designed for dancers are located on the first floor. These studios are created as small, independent and cubic units. They are connected through a system of collective terraces and small bridges. 46

This project is a renovation and transformation of an old water mill into a Bed & Breakfast for a dozen persons near Limoges. Only a few parts of the original structure remain, as a large part of it collapsed.

In order to ensure compliance with local construction standards, no extension is possible. The new house has therefore to be built within the limits of the old mill. The aim is to preserve as much as possible the traditional spirit of the place by reusing the dry stone walls that are still standing. A volume made of local wood is then inserted. It is made taller than the former construction to create a second level that houses the night spaces. The house is mostly open towards the river thanks to large bay windows, enabling a wide view of the countryside. A vast terrace stretches towards the water.

I participated in the design of this project, attending meetings with the clients, and realizing graphical documents needed for the building permit submission, under frequent supervision. 48

The proposal for this project embraces the brutalist exposed concrete as a quality. At the same time, the new design counterbalances the rigid repetitiveness of the building by adding voids to connect the floors, and breakout spaces bringing daylight into the corridors. The new, asymmetric baywindows add an unexpected playfulness to the facade. A restrained material palette complements the existing concrete textures.

I participated in this project by producing and editing the exterior impressions. 50

In collaboration with the EarthFlag Foundation, MEESVISSER developed the EarthWatch Pavilion. This refuge, right in the heart of Amsterdam, is an open call for contemplation and meditation. From the sky, the installation takes the shape of the highly recognizable Earth Flag logo, while from the ground it emerges in the urban landscape as a light structure, an Earth chapel. This pavilion offers a place under which visitors can meet, talk with one another or simply take a peaceful break and contemplate the mesmerizing life of the IJ.

I designed this pavillon in the context of a team workshop. All team members were invited to present a small project. I produced the documents and the model related to this specific pavilion. 56

espaces sublimes

What is sublime? What is a sublime space? This is the question raised in this workshop.

ENSA Versailles Bachelor workshop Under supervision of Team

A sublime space is an installation leading the visitor to experience the loss of his bearings. He is disoriented. He loses his consciousness. His imagination overtakes his reason. The order and organization he usually lives in are in crisis.

2014 Susanne Stacher C.Bergaud, N.Bonniol L.Geneau, E.Mouchel L.Valladier (ENSA Versailles)

This project is a consideration on the denaturalisation of a structural element: the column. It loses here its loadbearing function to be transformed into light. An infinite space, immense and without any landmarks appears. It becomes a forest of light. 58

corps et espace

This photographic project questions the existing connection between body and space: What is space? What generates and defines it? Where is the place of our body in this space? How does it interact with it? Space is a concept and is different from one culture to another. It evolves over time according to the personal relationship we have with our own body.

rester ou rentrer ? S'installer aux Pays-Bas : réflexions sur la pratique de la maîtrise d'oeuvre néerlandaise. This thesis is first and foremost an introspective work on what the title of architect represents. It questions what I consider to be my position in the coming years, being able to wear this title and to undertake the responsabilities that it implies.

ENSA Paris-Malaquais Architect licence thesis Under supervision of

2018-2019 Anne Mie Depuydt

Analysing the particular Dutch working environment while at the same time receiving a school education in France raised many questions. These fostered the writing of this essay. Living in a different country turned out to be a good opportunity to wonder how Architecture is made elsewhere. It gave me the chance to question on a global scale the architecture profession and the context of the architectural production in France and abroad. Through this thesis, I studied the reasons behind the important professional mobility of architects. I researched what were the specifics of a Dutch architectural practice. Finally this year-long experience challenged me to try to understand how to achieve a meaningful and intelligent professional integration. It made me wonder what direction to give to my burgeoning career.

audi, l'avance par l'architecture évolution de la ville et de l'Architecture par l'automobile, depuis l'automobile. The invention of cars at the end of the 19th century marked a major upheaval in human history. Cars have been a key to an unprecedented economic and cultural development. They became today's main way of transport in the world. The automobile quickly turned into an object of mass consumption that reflects the image of a contemporary lifestyle. It transformed our societies deeply and especially changed the relationship between men, space and distance. It has had a strong impact on our landscape through the creation of large infrastructure networks. Cars modified our perception of the world by offering a new perspective from behind the windshield.

ENSA Versailles Master thesis Under supervision of

2015-2016 D.Rodriguez Tomé

This MA thesis questions the use of an architectural policy in the case of a brand like Audi, while offering a broader analysis of the relationship that exists between city, Architecture and automobile. What are the specificities and constraints of a car retail space? Is Architecture a central element of promotion? How does the brand appropriate our visual environment? Does this change our perception from the road?
