It’s 9 am and the NYSC’s team is ready; the meeting is at the ‘A Day Away Club’, and people are diligently working. The facility was deeply sterilized the night before and now that the team is in, every spot is getting doubled checked and sanitized, including chairs and tables. The medical team starts coming in one at a time, all thrilled to be making history for the seniors of North York. It is indeed a great day; we are vaccinating some of the most vulnerable seniors in the community of North York. NYSC is hosting a vaccination clinic for the rst time. We’ve asked some of our best front liners to help with the job; there is excitement in the air, everyone has a job, and they have their most warm and welcoming face to serve the seniors who will come through the door starting at 10 am. The oor has been marked with arrows and signs; some of which have become the new norm in our everyday lives: ‘sanitize your hands’, ‘maintain social distancing’, ‘Wear a face mask at all times’… There are three main stations, registration, vaccination, and the wait and recovery area. NYSC brought eight people to help; they get along pretty well with the medical team, and together they will make the difference for 50 seniors waiting to be vaccinated today; We are learning a lot from the experience, as we are aware that there will potentially be more vaccination clinics hosted by North York Seniors Centre in the near future; with new opportunities to run vaccination clinics like this one, NYSC maintains high morale knowing that we will help the community to nally overpass this di cult times. The clock marks 10 am and “Marie” (names have been changed to protect our clients’ identity) is the rst senior in the vaccinations list stepping through the doors. She has some concerns, and her case is not the only one, many seniors stepped in with multiple questions:

What to expect? What happens after getting vaccinated? Is life going to change? Will they be able to go back to normal? (Learn about the answers to these questions HERE) (https://www.nyseniors.org/covid-updates/) The team is well-prepared, and the fears dissipate with brief but thoughtful conversations. Empathy is the key, and the friendly faces of the doctors and front liners make everything run smoothly. However, not all seniors step into the clinic with doubtful thoughts, as a matter of fact, most of them were tremendously happy to say hello to the “COVID free zone” as one of NYSC’s staff liked to say with joy after seniors were ready to leave the recovery area 15 minutes after getting their vaccine. That was the case of Julia and her husband, a couple of seniors to whom we also gave a ride from their home to the clinic and back. Julia’s sleeve was rolled up and ready from the rst second she crossed the door; she was deeply thankful for the opportunity to be vaccinated, and she wanted the doctors and us to know it. She registered very quickly and followed the path to the doctor’s station, with a tone of joy and hope she thanked the doctors and continued on to the recovery station with her husband, once there, they asked for some water and patiently waited for 15 minutes until it was safe to go. They were both feeling strong and healthy when one of our drivers came to pick them up and took them back home. Julia made sure to email us that same evening: “I wanted to convey to NYSC’s staff our thanks and appreciation for the great job you people did yesterday, in giving the vaccine to all the seniors of the ‘A Day Away Club’. It was a great effort on your part, and everything was done very well. Together, you did a great favour to the seniors as well as to the community… Please convey our thanks to all who were involved in this.” – Julia, March 25th, 2021 (names have been changed to protect our clients’ identity) As a senior’s centred non-for-pro t organization, we are deeply proud of the front line heroes that make this possible for the seniors in the community. We will continue to unify forces to offer both, seniors, and caregivers, all the support they need. In the meantime days like Wednesday, March 24th ll us with hope and joy, and we want to express all our gratitude to the medical team and frontline heroes that made this possible. Thank you, front line workers. HEROES WORK HERE!
